바나바와 사울이 보냄을 받다

1  안디옥 교회에 예언자들과 교사들이 있었는데, 그들은 바나바와 니게르라고 하는 시므온과, 구레네 사람 루기오와 t분봉왕 헤롯과 더불어 어릴 때부터 함께 자란 마나엔과 사울이다. 2 그들이 주님께 예배하며 금식하고 있을 때에, 성령이 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “너희는 나를 위해서 바나바와 사울을 따로 세워라. 내가 그들에게 맡기려 하는 일이 있다.” 3 그래서 그들은 금식하고 기도한 뒤에, 두 사람에게 안수를 하여 떠나보냈다.

사도들의 키프로스 전도 활동

4  바나바와 사울은, 성령이 가라고 보내시므로, 실루기아로 내려가서, 거기에서 배를 타고 키프로스로 건너갔다. 5 그들은 살라미에 이르러서, 유대 사람의 여러 회당에서 하나님의 말씀을 전하였다. 그들은 요한도 또한 조수로 데리고 있었다. 6 그들은 온 섬을 가로질러 바보에 이르렀다. 거기서 그들은 어떤 마술사를 만났는데, 그는 거짓 예언자였으며 바예수라고 하는 유대인이었다. 7 그는 총독 서기오 바울을 늘 곁에서 모시는 사람이었다. 이 총독은 총명한 사람이어서, 바나바와 사울을 청해서, 하나님의 말씀을 듣고자 하였다. 8 그런데 이름을 엘루마라고 번역해서 부르기도 하는 그 마술사가 그들을 방해하여, 총독으로 하여금 믿지 못하게 하려고 애를 썼다. 9 그래서 바울이라고도 하는 사울이 성령으로 충만하여 마술사를 노려보고 말하였다. 10 “너, 속임수와 악행으로 가득 찬 악마의 자식아, 모든 정의의 원수야, 너는 주님의 바른 길을 굽게 하는 짓을 그치지 못하겠느냐? 11 보아라, 이제 주님의 손이 너를 내리칠 것이니, 눈이 멀어서 얼마 동안 햇빛을 보지 못할 것이다.” 그러자 곧 안개와 어둠이 그를 내리덮어서, 그는 앞을 더듬으면서, 손을 잡아 자기를 이끌어 줄 사람을 찾았다. 12 총독은 그 일어난 일을 보고 주님을 믿게 되었고, 주님의 교훈에 깊은 감명을 받았다.

바울과 바나바가 비시디아의 안디옥에서 전도하다

13  바울과 그 일행은 바보에서 배를 타고, 밤빌리아에 있는 버가로 건너갔다. 그런데 요한은 그들과 헤어져서 예루살렘으로 돌아갔다. 14 그들은 버가에서 더 나아가, 비시디아의 안디옥에 이르러서, 안식일에 회당에 들어가 앉았다. 15 율법서와 예언자의 글을 낭독한 뒤에, 회당장들이 바울과 바나바에게 사람을 보내어 “형제들이여, 이 사람들에게 권면할 말씀이 있으면 해주시오” 하고 청하였다. 16 그래서 바울은 일어나서, 손을 흔들고 말하였다. “t이스라엘 동포 여러분, 그리고 하나님을 두려워하는 사람들이여, 내 말을 들으십시오. 17 이 백성 이스라엘의 하나님께서 우리 조상들을 택하셨습니다. 이 백성이 이집트 땅에서 나그네 생활을 하는 동안에, 이 백성을 높여 주시고, 권능의 팔로 그들을 거기에서 인도하여 내셨습니다. 18 광야에서는 사십 년 동안 t그들에 대하여 참아 주시고, 19 가나안 땅의 일곱 족속을 멸하셔서, 그 땅을 그들에게 유업으로 주시고, 20 약 사백오십 년 동안 차지하게 하셨습니다. 그 뒤에 예언자 사무엘 시대에 이르기까지는 사사들을 보내주시고, 21 그 뒤에 그들이 왕을 요구하기에, 하나님께서는 베냐민 지파 사람 기스의 아들 사울을 그들에게 왕으로 주셔서, 사십 년 동안 그를 왕으로 섬기게 하셨습니다. 22 그 다음에 하나님께서는 사울을 물리치시고서, 다윗을 그들의 왕으로 세우시고, 증언하여 말씀하시기를 t‘내가 이새의 아들 다윗을 찾아냈으니, 그는 내 마음에 드는 사람이다. 그가 내 뜻을 다 행할 것이다’ 하셨습니다. 23 하나님은 약속하신 대로 다윗의 후손 가운데서 구주를 세워 이스라엘에게 보내셨으니, 그가 곧 예수입니다. 24 그가 오시기 전에, 요한이 먼저 회개의 t세례를 모든 이스라엘 백성에게 선포하였습니다. 25 요한이 자기의 달려갈 길을 거의 다 갔을 때에 말하기를 ‘여러분은 나를 누구로 생각하십니까? 나는 그리스도가 아닙니다. 그는 내 뒤에 오실 터인데, 나는 그의 신발끈을 풀어드릴 자격도 없는 사람입니다’ 하였습니다. 26  아브라함의 자손인 동포 여러분, 그리고 여러분 가운데서 하나님을 두려워하는 사람들이여, 하나님께서 이 구원의 말씀을 t우리에게 보내셨습니다. 27 그런데 예루살렘에 사는 사람들과 그들의 지도자들이 이 예수를 알지 못하고, 안식일마다 읽는 예언자들의 말도 깨닫지 못해서, 그를 정죄함으로써, 예언자들의 말을 그대로 이루었습니다. 28 그들은 예수를 죽일 만한 아무런 까닭도 찾지 못하였지만, 빌라도에게 강요하여 예수를 죽이게 하였습니다. 29 이와 같이, 그를 가리켜 기록한 것을 다 행한 뒤에, 그들은 예수의 시체를 나무에서 내려다가, 무덤에 두었습니다. 30 그러나 하나님께서 예수를 죽은 사람 가운데서 살리셨습니다. 31 그래서 예수는 자기와 함께 갈릴리에서 예루살렘으로 올라간 사람들에게 여러 날 동안 나타나 보이셨습니다. 이 사람들은 [지금] 백성에게 예수의 증인입니다. 32 우리는 하나님께서 조상들에게 하신 그 약속을 여러분에게 기쁜 소식으로 전합니다. 33 하나님께서 예수를 일으키셔서, [조상들의] 후손인 우리에게 그 약속을 이루어 주셨습니다. 시편 둘째 편에 기록한 바 t‘너는 내 아들이다. 오늘 내가 너를 낳았다’ 한 것과 같습니다.

34 하나님께서 그를 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살리시고, 다시는 썩지 않게 하셨는데, 이렇게 미리 말씀하셨습니다. t‘다윗에게 약속한 거룩하고 확실한 복을, 내가 너희에게 주겠다.’

35 그러므로 다른 시편에서는 또 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. t‘주님께서는 주님의 거룩한 분이 썩지 않게 하실 것이다.’

36  다윗은 사는 동안, 하나님의 뜻을 받들어 섬기고, t잠들어서 조상들 곁에 묻혀 썩고 말았습니다. 37 그러나 하나님께서 살리신 분은 썩지 않으셨습니다. 38 그러므로 동포 여러분, 바로 이 예수로 말미암아 여러분에게 죄 용서가 선포된다는 것을 알아야 합니다. 39 여러분이 모세의 율법으로는 의롭게 될 수 없던 그 모든 일에서 풀려납니다. 믿는 사람은 누구나 다 예수 안에서 의롭게 됩니다. 40 그러므로 예언서에서 말한 일이 여러분에게 일어나지 않도록 조심하십시오. 이렇게 말하였습니다. 41  t‘보아라, 너희 비웃는 자들아, 놀라고 망하여라. 내가 너희 시대에 한 가지 일을 할 터인데, 그 일을 누가 너희에게 말하여 줄지라도 너희는 도무지 믿지 않을 것이다.’”

42  t그들이 회당에서 나올 때에, 사람들은 다음 안식일에도 이러한 말씀을 해 달라고 청하였다. 43 회중이 흩어진 뒤에도, 유대 사람들과 경건한 개종자들이 바울과 바나바를 많이 따랐다. 바울과 바나바는 그들에게 말을 걸면서, 늘 하나님의 은혜에 머물러 있으라고 권하였다. 44 그 다음 안식일에는 온 동네 사람이 거의 다 t하나님의 말씀을 들으려고 모여들었다. 45 유대 사람들이 그 무리를 보고 시기심으로 가득 차서, 바울과 바나바가 한 말을 반박하고 비방하였다. 46 그러나 바울과 바나바는 담대하게 말하였다. “우리는 하나님의 말씀을 당신들에게 먼저 전해야 하였습니다. 그러나 지금 당신들이 그것을 배척하고, 영원한 생명을 얻기에 합당하지 못한 사람으로 스스로 판정하므로, 우리는 이제 이방 사람들에게로 갑니다. 47 주님께서 우리에게 명하시기를 t‘내가 너를 뭇 민족의 빛으로 삼았으니, 그것은 네가 땅 끝까지 구원을 이루게 하려는 것이다’ 하셨습니다.”

48 이방 사람들은 이 말을 듣고 기뻐하며 주님의 말씀을 찬양하였고, 영원한 생명을 얻도록 정하신 사람은 모두 믿게 되었다. 49 이렇게 해서 주님의 말씀이 그 온 지방에 퍼져 나갔다. 50 그러나 유대 사람들은 경건한 귀부인들과 그 성의 지도층 인사들을 선동해서, 바울과 바나바를 박해하게 하였고, 그들을 그 지방에서 내쫓았다. 51 그래서 바울과 바나바는 그들에게 발의 먼지를 떨어버리고, 이고니온으로 갔다. 52 제자들은 기쁨과 성령으로 가득 차 있었다.

Barnabas and Saul //Are Chosen and Sent

1 The church at Antioch had several prophets and teachers. They were Barnabas, Simeon, also called Niger, Lucius from Cyrene, Manaen, who was Herod'st close friend, and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and going without eating, t the Holy Spirit told them, “Appoint Barnabas and Saul to do the work for which I have chosen them.”

3 Everyone prayed and went without eating for a while longer. Next, they placed their hands on Barnabas and Saul to show that they had been appointed to do this work. Then everyone sent them on their way.

4 After Barnabas and Saul had been sent by the Holy Spirit, they went to Seleucia. From there they sailed to the island of Cyprus.

5 They arrived at Salamis and began to preach God's message in the synagogues. They also had Johnt as a helper.
6 Barnabas and Saul went all the way to the city of Paphos on the other end of the island, where they met a Jewish man named Bar-Jesus. He practiced witchcraft and was a false prophet. 7 He also worked for Sergius Paulus, who was very smart and was the governor of the island. Sergius Paulus wanted to hear God's message, and he sent for Barnabas and Saul.

8 But Bar-Jesus, whose other name was Elymas, was against them. He even tried to keep the governor from having faith in the Lord.
9 Then Saul, better known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit. He looked straight at Elymas 10 and said, “You son of the devil! You are a liar, a crook, and an enemy of everything that is right. When will you stop speaking against the true ways of the Lord?

11 The Lord is going to punish you by making you completely blind for a while.”
Suddenly the man's eyes were covered by a dark mist, and he went around trying to get someone to lead him by the hand.

12 When the governor saw what had happened, he was amazed at this teaching about the Lord. So he put his faith in the Lord.

13 Paul and the others left Paphos and sailed to Perga in Pamphylia. But Johnt left them and went back to Jerusalem.

14 The rest of them went on from Perga to Antioch in Pisidia. Then on the Sabbath they went to the synagogue and sat down.

15 After the reading of the Law and the Prophets, t the leaders sent someone over to tell Paul and Barnabas, “Friends, if you have anything to say that will help the people, please say it.”

16 Paul got up. He motioned with his hand and said:
People of Israel, and everyone else who worships God, listen! 17 t The God of Israel chose our ancestors, and he let our people prosper while they were living in Egypt. Then with his mighty power he led them out, 18 t and for about 40 years he took care oft them in the desert. 19 t He destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan and gave their land to our people.

20 t All this happened in about 450 years.
Then God gave our people judges until the time of the prophet Samuel, 21 t but the people demanded a king. So for 40 years God gave them King Saul, the son of Kish from the tribe of Benjamin.

22 t Later, God removed Saul and let David rule in his place. God said about him, “David the son of Jesse is the kind of person who pleases me most! He does everything I want him to do.”
23 God promised that someone from David's family would come to save the people of Israel, and this one is Jesus. 24 t But before Jesus came, John was telling everyone in Israel to turn back to God and be baptized.

25 t Then, when John's work was almost done, he said, “Who do you people think I am? Do you think I am the Promised One? He will come later, and I am not good enough to untie his sandals.”
26 Now listen, you descendants of Abraham! Pay attention, all of you Gentiles who are here to worship God! Listen to this message about how to be saved, because it is for everyone.

27 The people of Jerusalem and their leaders didn't realize who Jesus was. And they didn't understand the words of the prophets they read each Sabbath. So they condemned Jesus just as the prophets had said.

28-29  t t They did exactly what the Scriptures said they would. Even though they couldn't find any reason to put Jesus to death, they still asked Pilate to have him killed.
After Jesus had been put to death, he was taken down from the crosst and placed in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from death!

31 t Then for many days Jesus appeared to his followers who had gone with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. Now they are telling our people about him.
32 God made a promise to our ancestors. And we are here to tell you the good news

33 t that he has kept this promise to us. It is just as the second Psalm says about Jesus,
“You are my son because today
I have become your Father.”

34  t God raised Jesus from death and will never let his body decay. It is just as God said,
“I will make to you
the same holy promises
that I made to David.”

35  t And in another psalm it says, “God will never let the body of his Holy One decay.”
36 When David was alive, he obeyed God. Then after he died, he was buried in the family grave, and his body decayed.

37 But God raised Jesus from death, and his body did not decay.
38 My friends, the message is that Jesus can forgive your sins! The Law of Moses could not set you free from all your sins. 39 But everyone who has faith in Jesus is set free.

40 Make sure what the prophets have said doesn't happen to you. They said,

41  t “Look, you people
who make fun of God!
Be amazed
and disappear.
I will do something today
that you won't believe,
even if someone
tells you about it!”
42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people begged them to say more about these same things on the next Sabbath.

43 After the service, many Jews and a lot of Gentiles who worshiped God went with them. Paul and Barnabas begged them all to remain faithful to God, who had treated them with undeserved grace.
44 The next Sabbath almost everyone in town came to hear the message about the Lord.t

45 When the Jewish people saw the crowds, they were very jealous. They insulted Paul and spoke against everything he said.

46 But Paul and Barnabas bravely said:
We had to tell God's message to you before we told it to anyone else. But you rejected the message! This proves that you don't deserve eternal life. Now we are going to the Gentiles.

47 t The Lord has given us this command,
“I have placed you here
as a light
for the Gentiles.
You are to take
the saving power of God
to people everywhere on earth.”

48 This message made the Gentiles glad, and they praised what they had heard about the Lord.t Everyone who had been chosen for eternal life then put their faith in the Lord.
49 The message about the Lord spread all over this region.

50 But the Jewish leaders went to some of the important men in the town and to some respected women who were religious. They turned them against Paul and Barnabas and started making trouble for them. They even chased them out of this part of the country.

51  t Paul and Barnabas shook the dust from that place off their feett and went on to the city of Iconium.
52 But the Lord's followers in Antioch were very happy and were filled with the Holy Spirit.
