Trimiterea lui Barnabas și a lui Saul

1 În biserica din Antiohia erau niște profeți și învățători: Barnabas, Simeon, numit și Nigert, Lucius din Cirena, Manaen – care fusese crescut împreună cu tetrarhul Irod – și Saul.2 În timp ce slujeau ei Domnului și posteau, Duhul Sfânt le-a zis: „Puneți-Mi deoparte pe Barnabas și pe Saul pentru lucrarea la care i-am chemat!“3 Atunci, după ce au postit și s-au rugat, și-au pus mâinile peste ei și i-au lăsat să plece.

În Cipru

4 Așadar, fiind trimiși de Duhul Sfânt, ei s-au dus în Seleucia, iar de acolo au plecat pe mare spre Cipru.5 Când au ajuns la Salamis, au predicat Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu în sinagogile iudeilor. Îl aveau cu ei pe Ioan, ca ajutor.6 Au traversat toată insula până la Pafos, iar acolo au întâlnit un vrăjitor, profet mincinos, un iudeu pe nume Bar-Isus,7 care era cu proconsulult Sergius Paulus, un om inteligent. Proconsulul i-a chemat la el pe Barnabas și pe Saul, căutând să asculte Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu,8 însă Elima, vrăjitorul, căci așa se traduce numele lui, li se opunea și căuta să-l îndepărteze pe proconsul de la credință.9 Dar Saul, numit și Pavelt, fiind plin de Duhul Sfânt, s-a uitat țintă la el10 și i- a zis: „Om plin de toată viclenia și de toată înșelăciunea, fiu al diavolului, dușman a tot ceea ce este drept, nu vei înceta să sucești căile drepte ale Domnului?11 Acum iată, mâna Domnului este împotriva ta: vei fi orb și nu vei mai vedea soarele până la o vreme!“ Și deodată a căzut peste el ceață și întuneric și a început să umble bâjbâind prin jur, căutând pe cineva care să-l ducă de mână.12 Atunci, văzând ce se întâmplase, proconsulul a crezut, fiind uluit de învățătura Domnului.

În Antiohia Pisidiei

13 Pavel și cei ce erau cu el au plecat din Pafos pe mare și s-au dus la Perga, în Pamfilia. Ioan însă s-a despărțit de ei și s-a întors în Ierusalim.14 Dar ei au plecat mai departe din Perga și au ajuns în Antiohia din Pisidia. În ziua de Sabat au intrat în sinagogă și s-au așezat.15 După citirea Legii și a Profeților, conducătorii sinagogii au trimis să le spună: „Fraților, dacă aveți vreun cuvânt de încurajare pentru popor, vorbiți!“

16 Pavel s-a ridicat, a făcut semn cu mâna și a zis:
„Bărbați israeliți și voi care vă temeți de Dumnezeut, ascultați!17 Dumnezeul acestui popor Israel i-a ales pe strămoșii noștri; El l-a înălțat în cinste pe poporul acesta în timpul peregrinării lui în țara Egiptului și l-a scos de acolo cu brațul Său puternic.18 Apoi, timp de aproape patruzeci de ani, i-a suportatt în pustie.19 Și, după ce a distrus șapte neamuri în țara Canaanului, le-a dat drept moștenire țara acestora.20  Perioada aceasta t s-a întins pe aproape patru sute cincizeci de ani. După aceea le-a dat judecătorit, până la profetul Samuel.21 Atunci ei au cerut un rege. Și Dumnezeu le-a dat timp de patruzeci de ani pe Saul, fiul lui Chiș, din seminția lui Beniamin.22 Apoi l-a înlăturat pe Saul și li l-a ridicat ca rege pe David, despre care a mărturisit: «L-am găsit pe David, fiul lui Iese, ca fiind un om după inima Mea și care va împlini toate planurile Mele.»t23 Dintre urmașii acestuia, Dumnezeu, după promisiunea Sa, a adus lui Israel un Mântuitor, pe Isus.24 Înainte de venirea lui Isus, Ioan predicase botezul pocăinței la tot poporul Israel.25 Când Ioan era pe cale de a-și împlini misiunea, zicea: «Cine presupuneți că sunt eu? Nu eu sunt Acela; ci iată, după mine vine Cel Căruia eu nu sunt vrednic să-I dezleg sandalele din picioare!»

26 Fraților, fii ai neamului lui Avraam, și voi, care vă temeți de Dumnezeu, nouă ne-a fost trimis cuvântul acestei mântuiri!27 Însă locuitorii Ierusalimului și conducătorii lor nu L-au recunoscut pe Isus și, prin faptul că L-au condamnat, au împlinit cuvintele din Profeți, care sunt citite în fiecare zi de Sabat.28 Și, măcar că nu au găsit nici un motiv de condamnare la moarte, ei i-au cerut lui Pilat să-L omoare.29 După ce au împlinit tot ce a fost scris cu privire la El, L-au dat jos de pe lemn și L-au pus într-un mormânt.30 Dar Dumnezeu L-a înviat dintre cei morți;31 El S-a arătat timp de mai multe zile celor ce veniseră cu el din Galileea în Ierusalim și care acum sunt martorii Lui în fața poporului.32 Așadar, noi vă aducem această veste bună că, promisiunea făcută strămoșilor noștri,

33 Dumnezeu a împlinit-o pentru noi, copiii lor, înviindu-L pe Isus, așa cum este scris în Psalmul al doilea:
«Tu ești Fiul Meu!
Astăzi Te-am născut!»t

34 Că L-a înviat dintre cei morți, așa că nu urmează să Se mai întoarcă în putrezire, a spus-o când a zis:
«Vă voi da promisiunile sfinte și demne de încredere făcute lui David.»t

35 De aceea mai zice și în alt psalm :
«Nu vei îngădui ca Sfântul Tăut să vadă putrezirea.»t

36 Însă David, după ce a slujit scopului lui Dumnezeu în generația sa, a adormit, a fost adăugat la strămoșii săi și a văzut putrezirea!37 Dar Cel pe Care L-a înviat Dumnezeu n-a văzut putrezirea!38 Să vă fie deci cunoscut, fraților, că prin El vi se vestește iertarea păcatelor; și, de toate păcatele de care nu ați putut fi îndreptățiți prin Legea lui Moise,39 este îndreptățit oricine crede în El.40 Vedeți deci ca nu cumva să vi se întâmple ceea ce s-a spus în Profeți:

41 «Uitați-vă, disprețuitorilor,
mirați-vă și pieriți!
Căci în zilele voastre am să fac o lucrare
pe care n-ați crede-o
dacă v-ar povesti-o cineva!»“t

42 În timp ce ieșeau, Barnaba s și Saul au fost rugați să vorbească despre aceste lucruri și în Sabatul următor.43 După ce s-a dat drumul adunării din sinagogă, mulți iudei și prozeliți devotați i-au urmat pe Pavel și Barnabas, care stăteau de vorbă cu ei, încurajându-i să rămână în harul lui Dumnezeu.

44 În Sabatul următor, aproape toată cetatea s-a adunat ca să audă Cuvântul Domnului.45 Dar iudeii, când au văzut mulțimile, s-au umplut de invidie. Ei vorbeau împotriva celor spuse de Pavel și-l insultau.46 Barnabas și Pavel însă au vorbit cu îndrăzneală și au zis: „Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu trebuia să vă fie spus mai întâi vouă, dar, fiindcă voi îl respingeți și vă judecați astfel ca fiind nedemni de viața veșnică, iată că ne întoarcem spre neamuri.

47 Căci așa ne-a poruncit Domnul:
«Te-am pus să fii o lumină pentru neamuri,
ca să duci mântuirea până la marginile pământului!»“t

48 Neamurile s-au bucurat când au auzit lucrul acesta și au lăudat Cuvântul Domnului. Și toți cei ce erau desemnați pentru viață veșnică au crezut.49 Cuvântul Domnului se răspândea prin toată regiunea.50 Dar iudeii le-au incitat pe femeile devotate, care aveau influență, și pe fruntașii cetății, au stârnit o persecuție împotriva lui Pavel și a lui Barnabas și i-au alungat din ținuturile lor.51  Pavel și Barnaba s și-au scuturat praful de pe picioare împotriva lor și s-au dus în Iconia.52 Ucenicii erau plini de bucurie și de Duhul Sfânt.

Barnabas and Saul //Are Chosen and Sent

1 The church at Antioch had several prophets and teachers. They were Barnabas, Simeon, also called Niger, Lucius from Cyrene, Manaen, who was Herod'st close friend, and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and going without eating, t the Holy Spirit told them, “Appoint Barnabas and Saul to do the work for which I have chosen them.”

3 Everyone prayed and went without eating for a while longer. Next, they placed their hands on Barnabas and Saul to show that they had been appointed to do this work. Then everyone sent them on their way.

5 They arrived at Salamis and began to preach God's message in the synagogues. They also had Johnt as a helper.
6 Barnabas and Saul went all the way to the city of Paphos on the other end of the island, where they met a Jewish man named Bar-Jesus. He practiced witchcraft and was a false prophet. 7 He also worked for Sergius Paulus, who was very smart and was the governor of the island. Sergius Paulus wanted to hear God's message, and he sent for Barnabas and Saul.

8 But Bar-Jesus, whose other name was Elymas, was against them. He even tried to keep the governor from having faith in the Lord.
9 Then Saul, better known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit. He looked straight at Elymas 10 and said, “You son of the devil! You are a liar, a crook, and an enemy of everything that is right. When will you stop speaking against the true ways of the Lord?

11 The Lord is going to punish you by making you completely blind for a while.”
Suddenly the man's eyes were covered by a dark mist, and he went around trying to get someone to lead him by the hand.

12 When the governor saw what had happened, he was amazed at this teaching about the Lord. So he put his faith in the Lord.

14 The rest of them went on from Perga to Antioch in Pisidia. Then on the Sabbath they went to the synagogue and sat down.

15 After the reading of the Law and the Prophets, t the leaders sent someone over to tell Paul and Barnabas, “Friends, if you have anything to say that will help the people, please say it.”

16 Paul got up. He motioned with his hand and said:
People of Israel, and everyone else who worships God, listen! 17 t The God of Israel chose our ancestors, and he let our people prosper while they were living in Egypt. Then with his mighty power he led them out, 18 t and for about 40 years he took care oft them in the desert. 19 t He destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan and gave their land to our people.

20 t All this happened in about 450 years.
Then God gave our people judges until the time of the prophet Samuel, 21 t but the people demanded a king. So for 40 years God gave them King Saul, the son of Kish from the tribe of Benjamin.

22 t Later, God removed Saul and let David rule in his place. God said about him, “David the son of Jesse is the kind of person who pleases me most! He does everything I want him to do.”
23 God promised that someone from David's family would come to save the people of Israel, and this one is Jesus. 24 t But before Jesus came, John was telling everyone in Israel to turn back to God and be baptized.

25 t Then, when John's work was almost done, he said, “Who do you people think I am? Do you think I am the Promised One? He will come later, and I am not good enough to untie his sandals.”
26 Now listen, you descendants of Abraham! Pay attention, all of you Gentiles who are here to worship God! Listen to this message about how to be saved, because it is for everyone.

27 The people of Jerusalem and their leaders didn't realize who Jesus was. And they didn't understand the words of the prophets they read each Sabbath. So they condemned Jesus just as the prophets had said.

28-29  t t They did exactly what the Scriptures said they would. Even though they couldn't find any reason to put Jesus to death, they still asked Pilate to have him killed.
After Jesus had been put to death, he was taken down from the crosst and placed in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from death!

31 t Then for many days Jesus appeared to his followers who had gone with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. Now they are telling our people about him.
32 God made a promise to our ancestors. And we are here to tell you the good news

33 t that he has kept this promise to us. It is just as the second Psalm says about Jesus,
“You are my son because today
I have become your Father.”

34  t God raised Jesus from death and will never let his body decay. It is just as God said,
“I will make to you
the same holy promises
that I made to David.”

35  t And in another psalm it says, “God will never let the body of his Holy One decay.”
36 When David was alive, he obeyed God. Then after he died, he was buried in the family grave, and his body decayed.

37 But God raised Jesus from death, and his body did not decay.
38 My friends, the message is that Jesus can forgive your sins! The Law of Moses could not set you free from all your sins. 39 But everyone who has faith in Jesus is set free.

40 Make sure what the prophets have said doesn't happen to you. They said,

41  t “Look, you people
who make fun of God!
Be amazed
and disappear.
I will do something today
that you won't believe,
even if someone
tells you about it!”
42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people begged them to say more about these same things on the next Sabbath.

43 After the service, many Jews and a lot of Gentiles who worshiped God went with them. Paul and Barnabas begged them all to remain faithful to God, who had treated them with undeserved grace.
44 The next Sabbath almost everyone in town came to hear the message about the Lord.t

45 When the Jewish people saw the crowds, they were very jealous. They insulted Paul and spoke against everything he said.

46 But Paul and Barnabas bravely said:
We had to tell God's message to you before we told it to anyone else. But you rejected the message! This proves that you don't deserve eternal life. Now we are going to the Gentiles.

47 t The Lord has given us this command,
“I have placed you here
as a light
for the Gentiles.
You are to take
the saving power of God
to people everywhere on earth.”

48 This message made the Gentiles glad, and they praised what they had heard about the Lord.t Everyone who had been chosen for eternal life then put their faith in the Lord.
49 The message about the Lord spread all over this region.

50 But the Jewish leaders went to some of the important men in the town and to some respected women who were religious. They turned them against Paul and Barnabas and started making trouble for them. They even chased them out of this part of the country.

51  t Paul and Barnabas shook the dust from that place off their feett and went on to the city of Iconium.
52 But the Lord's followers in Antioch were very happy and were filled with the Holy Spirit.
