Bernabé y Saulo comienzan su primer viaje misionero

1 En la iglesia de Antioquía eran profetas y maestros Bernabé y Simón, al que llamaban Niger; Lucio de Cirene; Manaén, que se había criado con el tetrarca Herodes, y Saulo.2 Como ellos servían al Señor y ayunaban siempre, el Espíritu Santo dijo: «Apártenme a Bernabé y a Saulo, porque los he llamado para un importante trabajo.»3 Y así, después de que todos ayunaron y oraron, les impusieron las manos y los despidieron.

4 Bernabé y Saulo fueron llevados por el Espíritu Santo a Seleucia, y de allí navegaron a Chipre.5 Al llegar a Salamina, comenzaron a predicar la palabra de Dios en las sinagogas de los judíos. Juan iba con ellos y les ayudaba.6 Luego atravesaron toda la isla, hasta llegar a Pafos, donde había un mago y falso profeta judío, llamado Bar Jesús,7 que estaba con el procónsul Sergio Paulo, quien era un varón muy prudente. Sergio Paulo mandó llamar a Bernabé y a Saulo, porque deseaba oír la palabra de Dios.8 Pero el mago Elimas (que así se traduce su nombre), se lo impedía y procuraba apartar de la fe al procónsul.9 Como Saulo, o sea, Pablo, estaba lleno del Espíritu Santo, fijó la mirada en el mago10 y dijo: «¡Eres un hijo del diablo! ¡Estás lleno de mentira y de maldad, y eres enemigo de la justicia! ¿Cuándo dejarás de trastornar los caminos rectos del Señor?11 Pon atención, porque la mano del Señor está en tu contra y vas a quedarte ciego; no podrás ver el sol por algún tiempo.» Y al instante quedó completamente ciego; y caminaba en círculos, buscando alguien que lo llevara de la mano.12 Cuando el procónsul vio lo que había sucedido, quedó maravillado de la enseñanza del Señor y creyó.

13 Después de que zarparon de Pafos, Pablo y sus compañeros arribaron a Perge de Panfilia; allí Juan se apartó de ellos y volvió a Jerusalén.14 De Perge, siguieron a Antioquía de Pisidia; y un día de reposo entraron en la sinagoga del lugar y se sentaron.15 Después de la lectura de la ley y de los profetas, los principales de la sinagoga les dijeron: «Hermanos, si tienen alguna enseñanza o exhortación para el pueblo, los escuchamos.»

16 Entonces Pablo se levantó y, luego de hacerles una señal para que guardaran silencio, dijo:
«Escúchenme ustedes, varones israelitas, y todos los que temen a Dios:17 El Dios de Israel eligió a nuestros padres y enalteció a su pueblo, y aunque ellos vivieron en Egipto como extranjeros,t Dios los sacó de allí con gran despliegue de poder.t18 Durante unos cuarenta años los toleró en el desierto;t19 y después de destruir a siete naciones en Canaán,t les dio esas tierras por herencia.t20 Cuatrocientos cincuenta años después, fueron gobernados por juecest hasta que llegó el profeta Samuel.t21 Más tarde pidieron un rey,t y Dios les dio a Saúl hijo de Cis, de la tribu de Benjamín,t quien los gobernó durante cuarenta años.22 Cuando Dios le quitó el trono a Saúl,t puso como rey a David, de quien dijo: “Me agrada David, el hijo de Yesé, porque sé que él cumplirá los planes que yo tengo.”t23 De acuerdo con su promesa, Dios levantó de la descendencia de David un salvador para Israel, que es Jesús.24 Antes de que Jesús viniera, Juan predicó el bautismo de arrepentimientot a todo el pueblo de Israel.25 Cuando Juan estaba por terminar su obra, preguntó: “¿Quién creen ustedes que soy yo? No soy el que esperan.t Pero después de mí viene uno, del que no soy digno de desatar las correas de su calzado.”t

26 »Ustedes, hermanos descendientes de Abrahán, y todos ustedes, los que honran a Dios, este mensaje de salvación ha sido enviado a nosotros.27 Los habitantes de Jerusalén y sus gobernantes no reconocieron a Jesús ni lo que dijeron los profetas, lo cual se lee en los días de reposo, pero dieron cumplimiento a esas palabras al condenar a Jesús.28 Y aunque no encontraron en él nada que mereciera su muerte, le pidieron a Pilato que lo matara.t29 Cuando se cumplió todo lo que estaba escrito acerca de él, lo bajaron del madero y lo sepultaron.t30 Pero Dios lo resucitó de los muertos,31 y durante muchos días Jesús se apareció a los que lo habían acompañado desde Galilea hasta Jerusalén.t Y ellos son ahora sus testigos ante el pueblo.32 Nosotros también les anunciamos a ustedes las buenas noticias de la promesa que Dios hizo a nuestros padres:33 Dios la ha cumplido en sus hijos, es decir, en nosotros, al resucitar a Jesús. Así está escrito en el salmo segundo, que dice: “Tú eres mi hijo. Hoy te he engendrado.”t34 En cuanto a levantarlo de entre los muertos, para que su cuerpo no llegara a corromperse, se dijo así: “Yo les cumpliré fielmente a ustedes las santas promesas que le hice a David.”t

35 Y también se dice en otro salmo: “No permitirás que el cuerpo de tu escogido se corrompa.”t36 Es un hecho que, por la voluntad de Dios, David sirvió a su generación y, cuando murió, se fue a reunir con sus padres; pero su cuerpo se corrompió.37 Sin embargo, el cuerpo de Jesús no se corrompió, porque Dios lo resucitó.38 Hermanos, quiero que sepan que les estamos anunciando el perdón de sus pecados por medio de Jesús.39 La ley de Moisés no pudo justificarles todos esos pecados, pero en Jesús queda justificado todo aquel que cree en él.40 Tengan, pues, cuidado de que no les sobrevenga lo que anunciaron los profetas:

41 “Ustedes, que todo lo desprecian,
¡asómbrense y desaparezcan!
En los días de ustedes haré algo tan grande
que no podrán creerlo,
aunque alguien se lo explique.”»t

42 Cuando ellos salieron de la sinagoga, les rogaron que el siguiente día de reposo volvieran a hablarles de estas cosas.43 Luego se despidió a la congregación, y muchos judíos y conversos piadosos siguieron a Pablo y a Bernabé, y ellos siguieron hablándoles y animándolos a mantenerse en la gracia de Dios.

44 El siguiente día de reposo casi todos los habitantes de la ciudad se reunieron para oír la palabra de Dios,45 pero cuando los judíos vieron tanta gente, se llenaron de celos y rebatían lo que Pablo decía, y lo contradecían y lo maldecían.46 Entonces Pablo y Bernabé les dijeron con toda franqueza: «Estamos seguros de que era necesario que ustedes fueran los primeros en escuchar la palabra de Dios. Pero como ustedes la rechazan y no se consideran dignos de recibir la vida eterna, ahora vamos a predicarles a los que no son judíos.

47 Ésa es la orden que el Señor nos dio, cuando dijo:
»“Te he puesto como luz para las naciones,
para que lleves salvación hasta los confines de la tierra.”»t

48 Cuando los que no eran judíos oyeron esto, se alegraron y glorificaron la palabra del Señor, y todos los que estaban destinados a recibir la vida eterna creyeron.49 Y la palabra del Señor se difundía por toda aquella provincia.50 Pero los judíos instigaron a las mujeres piadosas y distinguidas, y a los principales de la ciudad, para que iniciaran una persecución en contra de Pablo y Bernabé; así que los expulsaron de su territorio.51 Ellos, por su parte, al salir de la ciudad se sacudieron el polvo de los pies en señal de protesta,t y se fueron a Iconio.52 Y los discípulos estaban gozosos y llenos del Espíritu Santo.

Barnabas and Saul //Are Chosen and Sent

1 The church at Antioch had several prophets and teachers. They were Barnabas, Simeon, also called Niger, Lucius from Cyrene, Manaen, who was Herod'st close friend, and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and going without eating, t the Holy Spirit told them, “Appoint Barnabas and Saul to do the work for which I have chosen them.”

3 Everyone prayed and went without eating for a while longer. Next, they placed their hands on Barnabas and Saul to show that they had been appointed to do this work. Then everyone sent them on their way.

5 They arrived at Salamis and began to preach God's message in the synagogues. They also had Johnt as a helper.
6 Barnabas and Saul went all the way to the city of Paphos on the other end of the island, where they met a Jewish man named Bar-Jesus. He practiced witchcraft and was a false prophet. 7 He also worked for Sergius Paulus, who was very smart and was the governor of the island. Sergius Paulus wanted to hear God's message, and he sent for Barnabas and Saul.

8 But Bar-Jesus, whose other name was Elymas, was against them. He even tried to keep the governor from having faith in the Lord.
9 Then Saul, better known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit. He looked straight at Elymas 10 and said, “You son of the devil! You are a liar, a crook, and an enemy of everything that is right. When will you stop speaking against the true ways of the Lord?

11 The Lord is going to punish you by making you completely blind for a while.”
Suddenly the man's eyes were covered by a dark mist, and he went around trying to get someone to lead him by the hand.

12 When the governor saw what had happened, he was amazed at this teaching about the Lord. So he put his faith in the Lord.

14 The rest of them went on from Perga to Antioch in Pisidia. Then on the Sabbath they went to the synagogue and sat down.

15 After the reading of the Law and the Prophets, t the leaders sent someone over to tell Paul and Barnabas, “Friends, if you have anything to say that will help the people, please say it.”

16 Paul got up. He motioned with his hand and said:
People of Israel, and everyone else who worships God, listen! 17 t The God of Israel chose our ancestors, and he let our people prosper while they were living in Egypt. Then with his mighty power he led them out, 18 t and for about 40 years he took care oft them in the desert. 19 t He destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan and gave their land to our people.

20 t All this happened in about 450 years.
Then God gave our people judges until the time of the prophet Samuel, 21 t but the people demanded a king. So for 40 years God gave them King Saul, the son of Kish from the tribe of Benjamin.

22 t Later, God removed Saul and let David rule in his place. God said about him, “David the son of Jesse is the kind of person who pleases me most! He does everything I want him to do.”
23 God promised that someone from David's family would come to save the people of Israel, and this one is Jesus. 24 t But before Jesus came, John was telling everyone in Israel to turn back to God and be baptized.

25 t Then, when John's work was almost done, he said, “Who do you people think I am? Do you think I am the Promised One? He will come later, and I am not good enough to untie his sandals.”
26 Now listen, you descendants of Abraham! Pay attention, all of you Gentiles who are here to worship God! Listen to this message about how to be saved, because it is for everyone.

27 The people of Jerusalem and their leaders didn't realize who Jesus was. And they didn't understand the words of the prophets they read each Sabbath. So they condemned Jesus just as the prophets had said.

28-29  t t They did exactly what the Scriptures said they would. Even though they couldn't find any reason to put Jesus to death, they still asked Pilate to have him killed.
After Jesus had been put to death, he was taken down from the crosst and placed in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from death!

31 t Then for many days Jesus appeared to his followers who had gone with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. Now they are telling our people about him.
32 God made a promise to our ancestors. And we are here to tell you the good news

33 t that he has kept this promise to us. It is just as the second Psalm says about Jesus,
“You are my son because today
I have become your Father.”

34  t God raised Jesus from death and will never let his body decay. It is just as God said,
“I will make to you
the same holy promises
that I made to David.”

35  t And in another psalm it says, “God will never let the body of his Holy One decay.”
36 When David was alive, he obeyed God. Then after he died, he was buried in the family grave, and his body decayed.

37 But God raised Jesus from death, and his body did not decay.
38 My friends, the message is that Jesus can forgive your sins! The Law of Moses could not set you free from all your sins. 39 But everyone who has faith in Jesus is set free.

40 Make sure what the prophets have said doesn't happen to you. They said,

41  t “Look, you people
who make fun of God!
Be amazed
and disappear.
I will do something today
that you won't believe,
even if someone
tells you about it!”
42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people begged them to say more about these same things on the next Sabbath.

43 After the service, many Jews and a lot of Gentiles who worshiped God went with them. Paul and Barnabas begged them all to remain faithful to God, who had treated them with undeserved grace.
44 The next Sabbath almost everyone in town came to hear the message about the Lord.t

45 When the Jewish people saw the crowds, they were very jealous. They insulted Paul and spoke against everything he said.

46 But Paul and Barnabas bravely said:
We had to tell God's message to you before we told it to anyone else. But you rejected the message! This proves that you don't deserve eternal life. Now we are going to the Gentiles.

47 t The Lord has given us this command,
“I have placed you here
as a light
for the Gentiles.
You are to take
the saving power of God
to people everywhere on earth.”

48 This message made the Gentiles glad, and they praised what they had heard about the Lord.t Everyone who had been chosen for eternal life then put their faith in the Lord.
49 The message about the Lord spread all over this region.

50 But the Jewish leaders went to some of the important men in the town and to some respected women who were religious. They turned them against Paul and Barnabas and started making trouble for them. They even chased them out of this part of the country.

51  t Paul and Barnabas shook the dust from that place off their feett and went on to the city of Iconium.
52 But the Lord's followers in Antioch were very happy and were filled with the Holy Spirit.
