Actes 13

Saul et Barnabas partent en mission

1 Il y avait alors, dans l’Eglise d’Antioche, des *prophètes et des enseignants: Barnabas, Siméon surnommé le Noir, Lucius, originaire de Cyrène, Manaën, qui avait été élevé avec *Hérode le gouverneur, et Saul.

2 Un jour qu’ils adoraient ensemble le Seigneur et qu’ils jeûnaient, le Saint-Esprit leur dit:
—Mettez à part pour moi Barnabas et Saul pour l’œuvre à laquelle je les ai appelés.

3 Alors, après avoir jeûné et prié, ils leur imposèrent les mains et les laissèrent partir.

4 C’est donc envoyés par le Saint-Esprit que Barnabas et Saul descendirent à Séleucie, où ils s’embarquèrent pour l’île de Chypre.

5 Une fois arrivés à Salamine, ils annoncèrent la Parole de Dieu dans les *synagogues des *Juifs. Jean-Marc était avec eux et les secondait.

Elymas le magicien

6 Ils traversèrent toute l’île et arrivèrent à Paphos. Ils trouvèrent là un magicien juif nommé Bar-Jésus, qui se faisait passer pour un prophète.

7 Il faisait partie de l’entourage du proconsul Sergius Paulus, un homme intelligent. Celui-ci invita Barnabas et Saul et leur exprima son désir d’entendre la Parole de Dieu.

8 Mais Elymas le magicien (car c’est ainsi que l’on traduit son nom) s’opposait à eux; il cherchait à détourner le proconsul de la foi.

9 Alors Saul, qui s’appelait aussi Paul, rempli du Saint-Esprit, s’adressa à lui en le regardant droit dans les yeux:

10 —Charlatan plein de ruse et de méchanceté, fils du diable, ennemi de tout ce qui est bien, quand cesseras-tu de fausser les plans du Seigneur qui sont droits?

11 Mais maintenant, attention! La main du Seigneur va te frapper, tu vas devenir aveugle et, pendant un certain temps, tu ne verras plus la lumière du soleil.
Au même instant, les yeux d’Elymas s’obscurcirent; il se trouva plongé dans une nuit noire et se tournait de tous côtés en cherchant quelqu’un pour le guider par la main.

12 Quand le proconsul vit ce qui venait de se passer, il crut; car il avait été vivement impressionné par l’enseignement qui lui avait été donné au sujet du Seigneur.

La prédication de Paul dans la synagogue d’Antioche en Pisidie

13 Paul et ses compagnons reprirent la mer à Paphos et arrivèrent à Perge en Pamphylie. Là, Jean-Marc les abandonna et retourna à *Jérusalem.

14 Quant à eux, ils quittèrent Perge et continuèrent leur route jusqu’à Antioche en Pisidie. Là, ils se rendirent à la *synagogue le jour du *sabbat et s’assirent.

15 Après qu’on eut fait la lecture dans la *Loi et les *prophètes, les chefs de la synagogue leur firent dire:
—Frères, si vous avez quelques mots à adresser à la communauté, vous avez la parole.

16 Alors Paul se leva; d’un geste de la main il demanda le silence et dit:
—Israélites et vous tous qui servez Dieu, écoutez-moi!

17 Le Dieu de notre peuple d’*Israël a choisi nos ancêtres. Il a fait grandir le peuple pendant son séjour en Egypte. Ensuite, en déployant sa puissance, il l’en a fait sortir.

18 Pendant quarante ans environ, il l’a supporté dans le désert.

19 Après avoir détruit sept nations dans le pays de Canaan, il a donné leur territoire à son peuple.

20 Tout cela a duré environ 450 ans.
Après cela, il a donné à nos ancêtres des chefs jusqu’à l’époque du prophète Samuel.

21 Alors le peuple a demandé un roi et Dieu leur a donné Saül, fils de Kis, de la tribu de Benjamin. Celui-ci a régné sur eux pendant quarante ans.

22 Mais Dieu l’a rejeté et leur a choisi pour roi *David. C’est à lui qu’il a rendu ce témoignage:

En David, fils d’Isaï, j’ai trouvé un homme qui correspond à mes désirs , il accomplira toute ma volonté.

23 Or, voici que Dieu vient d’accorder à Israël un *Sauveur parmi les descendants de David, comme il l’avait promis, et ce Sauveur, c’est Jésus.

24 Avant sa venue, Jean avait appelé tous les Israélites à se faire baptiser pour indiquer qu’ils changeaient de vie.

25 Arrivé au terme de sa vie, Jean disait encore: «Qui pensez-vous que je suis? Je ne suis pas celui que vous attendiez! Non! il vient après moi, et je ne mérite pas de dénouer ses sandales.»

26 Mes frères, vous qui êtes les descendants d’*Abraham et vous qui voulez servir Dieu et qui êtes présents parmi nous, c’est à nous que Dieu a envoyé cette Parole de salut.

27 En effet, les habitants de Jérusalem et leurs chefs n’ont compris ni qui était Jésus, ni les paroles des *prophètes qui sont lues chaque jour de *sabbat. Et voici qu’en condamnant Jésus, ils ont accompli ces prophéties.

28 Ils n’ont trouvé chez lui aucune raison de le condamner à mort, et pourtant, ils ont demandé à *Pilate de le faire exécuter.

29 Après avoir réalisé tout ce que les Ecritures avaient prédit à son sujet, ils l’ont descendu de la croix et l’ont déposé dans un tombeau.

30 Mais Dieu l’a ressuscité des morts.

31 Pendant de nombreux jours, Jésus s’est montré à ceux qui étaient montés avec lui de la *Galilée jusqu’à Jérusalem et qui sont maintenant ses témoins devant le peuple.

32 Et nous, nous sommes venus vous annoncer cette Bonne Nouvelle: ce que Dieu avait promis à nos ancêtres,

33 il l’a pleinement accompli pour nous, qui sommes leurs descendants, en ressuscitant Jésus, selon ce qui est écrit au Psaume deux:

Tu es mon fils; aujourd’hui,
je fais de toi mon enfant .

34 Dieu avait annoncé celui qui ne devait pas retourner à la pourriture. C’est ce qu’il avait dit en ces termes:

Je vous accorderai
les bénédictions saintes et sûres
| que j’ai promises à David .

35 Dans un autre passage, il est dit encore:

Tu ne laisseras pas
| ton serviteur fidèle
| se décomposer dans la tombe .

36 Pourtant, David, après avoir en son temps contribué à l’accomplissement du plan de Dieu, est mort et a été enterré aux côtés de ses ancêtres. Il a donc connu la décomposition.

37 Mais celui que Dieu a ressuscité ne l’a pas connue.

38 Sachez-le donc, mes frères, c’est grâce à lui que le pardon des péchés vous est annoncé;

39 c’est par lui que tout homme qui croit est acquitté de toutes les fautes dont vous ne pouviez pas être acquittés par la *Loi de *Moïse.

40 Veillez donc à ce qu’il n’arrive pas ce qu’ont dit les prophètes:

41 Regardez, hommes pleins de mépris,
soyez dans l’étonnement,
| et disparaissez.
En effet, je vais accomplir une œuvre en votre temps,
une œuvre que vous ne croiriez pas
| si quelqu’un venait vous l’annoncer .

42 A la sortie, on leur demanda de reparler du même sujet le sabbat suivant.

43 Quand l’assemblée se fut dispersée, beaucoup de *Juifs et de païens convertis au judaïsme suivirent Paul et Barnabas. Ceux-ci s’entretenaient avec eux et les encourageaient à rester attachés à la grâce de Dieu.

Paul et Barnabas s’adressent aux non-Juifs

44 Le sabbat suivant, presque toute la ville se rassembla pour écouter la Parole du Seigneur.

45 En voyant tant de monde, les Juifs furent remplis de jalousie et se mirent à contredire Paul et à l’injurier.

46 Paul et Barnabas leur déclarèrent alors avec une pleine assurance:
—C’est à vous en premier que la Parole de Dieu devait être annoncée. Mais puisque vous la refusez et que vous-mêmes ne vous jugez pas dignes d’avoir part à la vie éternelle, nous nous tournons vers ceux qui ne sont pas Juifs.

47 Car le Seigneur a bien défini notre mission lorsqu’il a dit:

Je t’ai établi pour que tu sois
| la lumière des nations,
et pour que tu portes le salut
| jusqu’au bout du monde .

48 Quand les non-Juifs les entendirent parler ainsi, ils furent remplis de joie, ils se mirent à louer Dieu pour sa Parole et tous ceux qui étaient destinés à la vie éternelle crurent.

49 La Parole du Seigneur se répandait dans toute la contrée avoisinante.

50 Mais les Juifs excitèrent les femmes dévotes de la haute société qui s’étaient attachées au judaïsme, ainsi que les notables de la ville. Ils provoquèrent ainsi une persécution contre Paul et Barnabas et les expulsèrent de leur territoire.

51 Ceux-ci secouèrent contre eux la poussière de leurs pieds et allèrent à Iconium.

52 Les nouveaux *disciples, cependant, étaient remplis de joie et de l’Esprit Saint.

Acts 13

The Church at Antioch Commissions Barnabas and Saul

1 Now there were these prophets and teachers in the church at Antioch:ss Barnabas, Simeon called Niger,s Lucius the Cyrenian,s Manaen (a close friend of Herods the tetrarchts from childhoodt) and Saul.2 While they were servingt the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apartt for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

3 Then, after they had fastedt andt prayed and placed their handss on them, they sent them off.

Paul and Barnabas Preach in Cyprus

4 So Barnabas and Saul,t sent out by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia,s and from there they sailed to Cyprus.s5 Whent they arrivedt in Salamis,s they began to proclaimt the word of God in the Jewish synagogues.s (Now they also had Johns as their assistant.)ts6 When they had crossed overt the whole island as far as Paphos,s they found a magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus,s7 who was with the proconsuls Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. The proconsult summonedt Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hears the word of God.8 But the magician Elymast (for that is the way his name is translated)s opposed them, trying to turn the proconsuls away from the faith.9 But Saul (also known as Paul),s filled with the Holy Spirit,s stared straightt at him10 and said, “You who are full of all deceit and all wrongdoing,t you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness – will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?s11 Nowt look, the hand of the Lord is againstt you, and you will be blind, unable to see the sun for a time!” Immediately mistinesss and darkness came overt him, and he went around seeking peoplet to lead him by the hand.

12 Then when the proconsuls saw what had happened, he believed,s because he was greatly astoundedt at the teaching aboutt the Lord.

Paul and Barnabas at Pisidian Antioch

13 Then Paul and his companions put out to seat from Paphoss and came to Pergas in Pamphylia,s but Johns left them and returned to Jerusalem.ss14 Moving on fromt Perga,s they arrived at Pisidian Antioch,tss and on the Sabbath day they went intot the synagogues and sat down.15 After the reading from the law and the prophets,s the leaders of the synagoguet sent them a message,t saying, “Brothers,t if you have any messaget of exhortationt for the people, speak it.”t

16 So Paul stood up,t gesturedt with his hand and said,
“Men of Israel,t and you Gentiles who fear God,t listen:17 The God of this people Israelt chose our ancestorsts and made the people greatt during their stay as foreignerst in the countryt of Egypt, and with uplifted arms he led them out of it.18 Fort a period of about forty years he put up witht them in the wilderness.t19 Aftert he had destroyedt seven nationss in the land of Canaan, he gave his people their land as an inheritance.t20 All this tookt about four hundred fifty years. After thist he gave them judges until the time oft Samuel the prophet.21 Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, who ruledt forty years.22 After removing him, Godt raised ups David their king. He testified about him:t ‘I have found Davids the son of Jesse to be a man after my heart,s who will accomplish everything I want him to do.’t23 From the descendantsts of this mans God brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, just as he promised.ts24 Beforet Jesust arrived, Johns had proclaimed a baptism for repentancet to all the people of Israel.25 But while John was completing his mission,t he said repeatedly,t ‘What do you think I am? I am not he. But look, one is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet!’t26 Brothers,t descendantst of Abraham’s family,t and those Gentiles among you who fear God,t the messaget of this salvation has been sent to us.27 For the people who live in Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognizet him,t and they fulfilled the sayingsts of the prophets that are read every Sabbath by condemningt him.t28 Thought they foundt no basiss for a death sentence,t they asked Pilate to have him executed.29 When they had accomplishedt everything that was writtens about him, they took him downt from the crosst and placed himt in a tomb.30 But God raiseds him from the dead,31 andt for many days he appeared to those who had accompanieds him from Galilee to Jerusalem. Theset are now his witnesses to the people.32 And we proclaim to you the good news about the promise to our ancestors,t33 that this promisets God has fulfilled to us, their children, by raisingts Jesus, as also it is written in the second psalm, ‘You are my Son;stoday I have fathered you.’ts34 But regarding the fact that he has raised Jesust from the dead, nevert again to bet in a state of decay, Godt has spoken in this way: ‘I will give youtthe holy and trustworthy promisestmade to David.’s35 Therefore he also says in another psalm,t ‘You will not permit your Holy Onetto experiencetdecay.’s36 For David, after he had servedt God’s purpose in his own generation, died,t was buried with his ancestors,t and experiencedt decay,37 but the ones whom God raised up did not experiencet decay.38 Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through this onet forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,39 and by this ones everyone who believes is justifiedt from everything from which the law of Moses could not justifyt you.t

40 Watch out,s then, that what is spoken about byt the prophets does not happen to you:

41 ‘Look, you scoffers; be amazed and perish!t
For I am doing a work in your days,
a work you would never believe, even if someone tells you.’”s
42 As Paul and Barnabast were going out,t the peoplet were urgingt them to speak about these thingst on the next Sabbath.

43 When the meeting of the synagogues had broken up,t many of the Jews and God-fearing proselytest followed Paul and Barnabas, who were speaking with them and were persuadingt themt to continuet in the grace of God.
44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city assembled together to hear the word of the Lord.ss45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy,s and they began to contradictt what Paul was sayingt by reviling him.t46 Both Paul and Barnabas replied courageously,t “It was necessary to speak the word of Godt to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthyt of eternal life, wet are turning to the Gentiles.s47 For thist is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have appointedtyou to be a lightsfor the Gentiles, to bring salvationtto the ends of the earth.’”s48 When the Gentiles heard this, they began to rejoicet and praiset the word of the Lord, and all who had been appointed for eternal lifes believed.49 So the word of the Lord was spreadingt through the entire region.50 But the Jews incitedt the God-fearing women of high social standing and the prominent men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and threw them outt of their region.51 So after they shookt the dust off their feets in protest against them, they went to Iconium.s

52 And the disciples were filled with joys and with the Holy Spirit.
