Den første misjonsreisen

1 I Antiokia, i menigheten der, var det profeter og lærere: Barnabas og Simeon, som kaltes Niger, og Lukius fra Kyréne og Manaen, fosterbror til fjerdingsfyrsten Herodes, og Saulus. 2 Mens de holdt gudstjeneste og fastet, sa Den Hellige Ånd: Ta ut for meg Barnabas og Saulus til den gjerningen som jeg har kalt dem til! s3 Da lot de dem dra ut etter at de hadde fastet og bedt og lagt hendene på dem. s

4 Da de slik var utsendt av Den Hellige Ånd, dro de ned til Seleukia og reiste derfra til Kypros. 5 Og da de var kommet til Salamis, forkynte de Guds ord i jødenes synagoger. De hadde også Johannes med som hjelper. s6 Etter at de hadde reist over hele øya, like til Pafus, traff de på en trollmann, en falsk profet. Det var en jøde som hette Barjesus. s7 Han holdt til hos landshøvdingen Sergius Paulus, som var en forstandig mann. Han ba Barnabas og Saulus til seg fordi han ønsket å høre Guds ord. 8 Men Elymas, trollmannen - for det betyr navnet hans - sto dem imot. Han prøvde å vende landshøvdingen bort fra troen. s9 Men Saulus, som også ble kalt Paulus, så skarpt på ham, fylt av Den Hellige Ånd. 10 Og han sa: Du som er full av all svik og alt bedrag, du djevelens barn, fiende av all rettferdighet, skal du aldri holde opp med å forvrenge Herrens rette veier? s11 Men se, nå er Herrens hånd over deg, og du skal bli blind og ikke se solen for en tid. Straks falt det skodde og mørke over ham, og han famlet omkring og lette etter noen som kunne lede ham ved hånden. 12 Da landshøvdingen så det som skjedde, kom han til troen, og han var slått av undring over Herrens lære.

I synagogen i Antiokia i Pisidia

13 Paulus og de som fulgte ham, seilte da ut fra Pafus og kom til Perge i Pamfylia. Men Johannes skilte lag med dem og vendte tilbake til Jerusalem. s

14 De andre dro videre fra Perge og kom til Antiokia i Pisidia. De gikk inn i synagogen på sabbatsdagen og satte seg der. 15 Etter opplesningen fra loven og profetene, sendte synagogeforstanderne bud til dem og sa: Brødre, har dere et formaningsord til folket, så tal! s16 Paulus sto da opp og slo til lyd med hånden og sa: Israelittiske menn og dere som frykter Gud! Hør: 17 Israels Gud, dette folkets Gud, utvalgte våre fedre. Han lot folket vokse seg stort under utlendigheten i Egypt, og han førte dem ut derfra med løftet arm. s18 I en tid på omkring førti år bar han dem på faderarm i ørkenen. s19 Han utryddet sju folkeslag i Kana’ans land, og skiftet deres land ut til arv for dem.s20 Og etter dette ga han dem dommere i omkring fire hundre og femti år, inntil profeten Samuel.s21 Deretter ba de om en konge, og Gud ga dem Saul, sønn av Kis, en mann av Benjamins stamme, i førti år. s22 Etter at han hadde avsatt ham, reiste han opp David til konge for dem. Han ga ham dette vitnesbyrdet: Jeg fant David, Isais sønn, en mann etter mitt hjerte. Han skal gjøre all min vilje. s23 Etter sitt løfte førte Gud av hans ætt fram en frelser for Israel, Jesus, ss24 etter at Johannes, før han sto fram, hadde forkynt omvendelses dåp for hele Israels folk. s25 Men da Johannes var i ferd med å fullføre sitt løp, sa han: Den som dere holder meg for å være, er jeg ikke. Men se, han kommer etter meg. Og jeg er ikke engang verdig til å løse skoene av føttene hans! s26 Brødre, barn av Abrahams ætt og de blant dere som frykter Gud: Det var til oss ordet om denne frelsen ble sendt. 27 For de som bor i Jerusalem, og deres rådsherrer, kjente ham ikke. Og da de dømte ham, oppfylte de profetenes ord, som blir opplest hver eneste sabbat. s28 Og enda de ikke fant noen dødsskyld hos ham, ba de Pilatus at han måtte bli slått i hjel. s29 Da de hadde fullbyrdet alt som er skrevet om ham, tok de ham ned av treet og la ham i en grav. s30 Men Gud reiste ham opp fra de døde! ss31 I flere dager viste han seg for dem som var dratt opp med ham fra Galilea til Jerusalem, de som nå er hans vitner for folket. s32 Og vi forkynner dere evangeliet om det løftet som ble gitt til fedrene. sss33 Dette har Gud oppfylt for oss, deres barn, da han reiste Jesus opp. Slik står det jo skrevet i den andre salme: Du er min Sønn, jeg har født deg i dag. s34 Men at han har reist ham opp fra de døde, så han ikke mer skal vende tilbake til tilintetgjørelse, det har han sagt slik: Jeg vil gi dere de hellige løfter til David, de trofaste. s35 Derfor sier han også på et annet sted: Du skal ikke overgi din Hellige til å se tilintetgjørelse. s36 For David sov inn, etter at han i sin levetid hadde tjent Guds råd. Han ble samlet til sine fedre og så tilintetgjørelse. s37 Men han som Gud reiste opp, han så ikke tilintetgjørelse. s

38 Derfor skal dere vite, brødre, at ved ham forkynnes syndenes forlatelse for dere. Og fra alt det som dere ikke kunne rettferdiggjøres fra ved Mose lov, ss39 rettferdiggjøres i ham enhver som tror. s40 Se derfor til at ikke det kommer over dere som er sagt hos profetene: 41 Se, dere foraktere! Undre dere og bli til intet! For en gjerning gjør jeg i deres dager, en gjerning som dere ikke vil tro om noen forteller dere det. s42 Da de gikk ut, ba folk dem om at disse ordene måtte bli talt til dem også neste sabbat. 43 Da møtet i synagogen var oppløst, var det mange av jødene og av de gudsdyrkere som hadde tatt ved jødenes tro, som fulgte etter Paulus og Barnabas. Disse talte da igjen til dem, og formante dem innstendig til å holde fast ved Guds nåde. s

44 På den neste sabbatten samlet da nesten hele byen seg for å høre Herrens ord. s45 Men da jødene så folkemengden, ble de fylt av nidkjærhet, og motsa det som ble sagt av Paulus, ja, de sa imot og spottet. s46 Men både Paulus og Barnabas talte rett ut og sa: Det var nødvendig at Guds ord ble talt først til dere. Men siden dere avviser det og ikke akter dere verdige til det evige liv, så vender vi oss nå til hedningene. s47 For dette er Herrens bud til oss: Jeg har satt deg til et lys for hedningene, for at du skal være til frelse like til jordens ender. s48 Da hedningene hørte dette, gledet de seg og priste Herrens ord. Og de kom til tro, alle de som var bestemt til evig liv. s49 Og Herrens ord utbredte seg over hele landet.

Det blir forfølgelse

50 Men jødene fikk hisset opp de fornemme kvinnene som holdt seg til jødenes tro, og de fremste menn i byen, og de fikk i stand en forfølgelse mot Paulus og Barnabas, og drev dem bort fra sine områder. 51 De ristet da støvet av føttene sine mot dem og dro til Ikonium. s52 Men disiplene ble fylt av glede og Den Hellige Ånd. s

Acts 13

1 Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers, Barnabas, and Symeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen the foster-brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.2 And as they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.3 Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.4 So they, being sent forth by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.5 And when they were at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John as their attendant.6 And when they had gone through the whole island unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-jesus;7 who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of understanding. The same called unto him Barnabas and Saul, and sought to hear the word of God.8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn aside the proconsul from the faith.9 But Saul, who is also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fastened his eyes on him,10 and said, O full of all guile and all villany, thou son of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.12 Then the proconsul, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.13 Now Paul and his company set sail from Paphos, and came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departed from them and returned to Jerusalem.14 But they, passing through from Perga, came to Antioch of Pisidia; and they went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.16 And Paul stood up, and beckoning with the hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, hearken:17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they sojourned in the land of Egypt, and with a high arm led he them forth out of it.18 And for about the time of forty years as a nursing-father bare he them in the wilderness.19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land for an inheritance, for about four hundred and fifty years:20 and after these things he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.21 And afterward they asked for a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for the space of forty years.22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king; to whom also he bare witness and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who shall do all My will.23 Of this man’s seed hath God according to promise brought unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus;24 when John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.25 And as John was fulfilling his course, he said, What suppose ye that I am? I am not he. But behold, there cometh one after me the shoes of whose feet I am not worthy to unloose.26 Brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us is the word of this salvation sent forth.27 For they that dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him.28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet asked they of Pilate that he should be slain.29 And when they had fulfilled all things that were written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a tomb.30 But God raised him from the dead:31 and he was seen for many days of them that came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses unto the people.32 And we bring you good tidings of the promise made unto the fathers,33 that God hath fulfilled the same unto our children, in that he raised up Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he hath spoken on this wise, I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.35 Because he saith also in another psalm, Thou wilt not give Thy Holy One to see corruption.36 For David, after he had in his own generation served the counsel of God, fell asleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:37 but he whom God raised up saw no corruption.38 Be it known unto you therefore, brethren, that through this man is proclaimed unto you remission of sins:39 and by him every one that believeth is justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.40 Beware therefore, lest that come upon you which is spoken in the prophets:

41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish; For I work a work in your days, A work which ye shall in no wise believe, if one declare it unto you.

42 And as they went out, they besought that these words might be spoken to them the next sabbath.43 Now when the synagogue broke up, many of the Jews and of the devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas; who, speaking to them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.44 And the next sabbath almost the whole city was gathered together to hear the word of God.45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted the things which were spoken by Paul, and blasphemed.46 And Paul and Barnabas spake out boldly, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first be spoken to you. Seeing ye thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee for a light of the Gentiles, That thou shouldest be for salvation unto the uttermost part of the earth.

48 And as the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of God: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.49 And the word of the Lord was spread abroad throughout all the region.50 But the Jews urged on the devout women of honorable estate, and the chief men of the city, and stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and cast them out of their borders.51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.52 And the disciples were filled with joy with the Holy Spirit.
