Una misión especial

1 En la iglesia de Antioquía estaban Bernabé, Simeón «el Negro», Lucio el del pueblo de Cirene, Menahem y Saulo. Menahem había crecido con el rey Herodes Antipas. Todos ellos eran profetas y maestros.

2 Un día, mientras ellos estaban adorando al Señor y ayunando , el Espíritu Santo les dijo: «Prepárenme a Bernabé y a Saulo. Yo los he elegido para una misión especial.»

3 Todos siguieron orando y ayunando; después oraron por Bernabé y Saulo, les pusieron las manos sobre la cabeza, y los despidieron.

4 El Espíritu Santo envió a Bernabé y a Saulo a anunciar el mensaje de Dios. Primero fueron a la región de Seleucia, y allí tomaron un barco que los llevó a la isla de Chipre.

5 En cuanto llegaron al puerto de Salamina, comenzaron a anunciar el mensaje de Dios en las sinagogas de los judíos. Juan Marcos fue con ellos como ayudante.
6 Después atravesaron toda la isla y llegaron al puerto de Pafos. Allí encontraron a Barjesús, un judío que hacía brujerías y que, según decía, hablaba de parte de Dios.

7-8 Barjesús era amigo de Sergio Paulo, un hombre inteligente que era gobernador de Chipre. Sergio Paulo mandó a llamar a Bernabé y a Saulo, pues tenía muchos deseos de oír el mensaje de Dios. Pero el brujo Barjesús, al que en griego lo llamaban Elimas, se puso frente a ellos para no dejarlos pasar, pues no quería que el gobernador los escuchara y creyera en el Señor Jesús.
9 Entonces Saulo, que también se llamaba Pablo y tenía el poder del Espíritu Santo, miró fijamente al brujo y le dijo:10 «Tú eres un hijo del diablo, un mentiroso y un malvado. A ti no te gusta hacer lo bueno. ¡Deja ya de mentir diciendo que hablas de parte de Dios!

11 Ahora Dios te va a castigar: te quedarás ciego por algún tiempo y no podrás ver la luz del sol.»
En ese mismo instante, Elimas sintió como si una nube oscura le hubiera cubierto los ojos, y se quedó completamente ciego. Andaba como perdido, buscando que alguien le diera la mano para guiarlo.

12 Al ver esto, el gobernador se quedó muy admirado de la enseñanza acerca del Señor Jesús, y en verdad creyó en él.

13 En Pafos, Pablo y sus compañeros subieron a un barco y se fueron a la ciudad de Perge, que estaba en la región de Panfilia. Allí, Juan Marcos se separó del grupo y regresó a la ciudad de Jerusalén.

14 Pablo y los demás siguieron el viaje a pie hasta la ciudad de Antioquía, en la región de Pisidia.
Un sábado fueron a la sinagoga de la ciudad, y se sentaron allí.

15 Alguien leyó un pasaje de la Biblia y, al terminar, los jefes de la sinagoga mandaron a decir a Pablo y a los demás: «Amigos israelitas, si tienen algún mensaje para darle ánimo a la gente, pueden tomar la palabra.»

16 Pablo se puso de pie, levantó la mano para pedir silencio, y dijo:

«Israelitas, y todos ustedes, los que aman y obedecen a Dios, escúchenme.17 El Dios de Israel eligió a nuestros antepasados para hacer de ellos un gran pueblo. Los eligió cuando ellos estaban en Egipto. Luego los egipcios los hicieron esclavos, pero Dios, con su gran poder, los sacó de allí.18 El pueblo anduvo en el desierto unos cuarenta años, y durante todo ese tiempo Dios los cuidó. t19 Después Dios destruyó a siete países en el territorio de Canaán, y le dio ese territorio al pueblo de Israel.

20 Todo esto sucedió en un lapso de cuatrocientos cincuenta años.
»Luego Dios envió a unos hombres para que fueran los líderes de la nación, y continuó enviando líderes hasta que llegó el profeta Samuel.

21 Pero todos le pidieron a Dios que los dejara tener un rey que los gobernara. Dios nombró entonces a Saúl rey de la nación.
»Saúl era hijo de un hombre llamado Quis, que era de la tribu de Benjamín. Y gobernó Saúl durante cuarenta años.

22 Luego, Dios lo quitó del trono y puso como nuevo rey a David. Acerca de David, Dios dijo: “Yo quiero mucho a David el hijo de Jesé, pues siempre me obedece en todo.”
23 »Dios prometió que un descendiente de David vendría a salvar al pueblo israelita. Pues bien, ese descendiente de David es Jesús.24 Antes de que él llegara, Juan el Bautista vino y le dijo a los israelitas que debían arrepentirse de sus pecados y ser bautizados.

25 Cuando Juan estaba a punto de morir, les dijo a los israelitas: “Yo no soy el Mesías que Dios les prometió. Él vendrá después, y yo ni siquiera merezco ser su esclavo.”
26 »Pónganme atención, amigos israelitas descendientes de Abraham. Y pónganme atención también ustedes, los que obedecen a Dios aunque no son israelitas. Este mensaje de salvación es para todos nosotros.27 Sabemos que los habitantes de Jerusalén y los líderes del país no se dieron cuenta de quién era Jesús. Todos los sábados leían los libros de los profetas, pero no se dieron cuenta de que esos libros se referían a Jesús. Entonces ordenaron matar a Jesús y, sin saberlo, cumplieron así lo que los profetas habían anunciado.28 Aunque no tenían nada de qué acusarlo, le pidieron a Pilato que lo matara.29 Luego, cuando hicieron todo lo que los profetas habían anunciado, bajaron de la cruz el cuerpo de Jesús y lo pusieron en una tumba.30 Pero Dios hizo que Jesús resucitara,

31 y durante muchos días Jesús se apareció a todos los discípulos . Éstos habían viajado con él desde la región de Galilea hasta la ciudad de Jerusalén. Ahora ellos les cuentan a todos quién es Jesús.
32 »Dios prometió a nuestros antepasados que enviaría a un salvador, y nosotros les estamos dando esa buena noticia:

33 Dios ha cumplido su promesa, pues resucitó a Jesús. Todo sucedió como dice en el segundo salmo:

“Tú eres mi Hijo;
desde hoy soy tu padre.” t

34 »Dios ya había anunciado en la Biblia que Jesús resucitaría, y que no dejaría que el cuerpo de Jesús se descompusiera en la tumba. Así lo había anunciado cuando le dijo:

“Te haré las mismas promesas
que hice a David;
promesas especiales,
¡promesas que se cumplirán!”

35 »Por eso, en otro salmo dice:

“No dejarás mi cuerpo en la tumba;
no dejarás que tu amigo fiel
sufra la muerte.”

36 »La verdad es que David obedeció todo lo que Dios le ordenó. Pero luego murió y fue enterrado en la tumba de sus antepasados, y su cuerpo se descompuso.

37 En cambio, Dios resucitó a Jesús, y su cuerpo no se descompuso.
38 »Amigos israelitas, éste es el mensaje que anunciamos: ¡Jesús puede perdonarles sus pecados ! La ley de Moisés no puede librarlos de todos sus pecados,39 pero Dios perdona a todo aquel que cree en Jesús.

40 Tengan cuidado, para que no reciban el castigo que anunciaron los profetas, cuando dijeron:

41 “Ustedes se burlan de Dios,
pero asómbrense ahora y huyan.
Tan terribles serán los castigos
que les daré a los desobedientes,
que no van a creerlo
si alguien se los cuenta.”»

42 Cuando Pablo y sus amigos salieron de la sinagoga, la gente les rogó que volvieran el siguiente sábado y les hablaran más de todo esto.

43 Muchos judíos, y algunos extranjeros que habían seguido la religión judía, se fueron con ellos. A éstos, Pablo y Bernabé les pidieron que nunca dejaran de confiar en el amor de Dios.
44 Al sábado siguiente, casi toda la gente de la ciudad se reunió en la sinagoga, para oír el mensaje de Dios que iban a dar Pablo y Bernabé.45 Pero cuando los judíos vieron reunida a tanta gente, tuvieron envidia. Entonces comenzaron a decir que Pablo estaba equivocado en todo lo que decía, y también lo insultaron.

46 Pero Pablo y Bernabé les contestaron con mucha valentía:

«Nuestra primera obligación era darles el mensaje de Dios a ustedes los judíos. Pero como ustedes lo rechazan y no creen merecer la vida eterna, ahora les anunciaremos el mensaje a los que no son judíos.

47 Porque así nos lo ordenó Dios:

“Yo te he puesto, Israel,
para que seas luz de las naciones;
para que anuncies mi salvación
hasta el último rincón del mundo.”»

48 Cuando los que no eran judíos oyeron eso, se pusieron muy contentos y decían que el mensaje de Dios era bueno. Y todos los que Dios había elegido para recibir la vida eterna creyeron en él.
49 El mensaje de Dios se anunciaba por todos los lugares de aquella región.

50 Pero los judíos hablaron con las mujeres más respetadas y religiosas de la ciudad, y también con los hombres más importantes, y los convencieron de perseguir a Pablo y a Bernabé, y de echarlos fuera de esa región.

51 Por eso Pablo y Bernabé, en señal de rechazo contra ellos, se sacudieron los pies para quitarse el polvo de ese lugar, y se fueron a Iconio.

52 Los seguidores de Jesús que se quedaron en Antioquía estaban muy alegres, y recibieron todo el poder del Espíritu Santo.

Barnabas and Saul //Are Chosen and Sent

1 The church at Antioch had several prophets and teachers. They were Barnabas, Simeon, also called Niger, Lucius from Cyrene, Manaen, who was Herod'st close friend, and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and going without eating, t the Holy Spirit told them, “Appoint Barnabas and Saul to do the work for which I have chosen them.”

3 Everyone prayed and went without eating for a while longer. Next, they placed their hands on Barnabas and Saul to show that they had been appointed to do this work. Then everyone sent them on their way.

5 They arrived at Salamis and began to preach God's message in the synagogues. They also had Johnt as a helper.
6 Barnabas and Saul went all the way to the city of Paphos on the other end of the island, where they met a Jewish man named Bar-Jesus. He practiced witchcraft and was a false prophet. 7 He also worked for Sergius Paulus, who was very smart and was the governor of the island. Sergius Paulus wanted to hear God's message, and he sent for Barnabas and Saul.

8 But Bar-Jesus, whose other name was Elymas, was against them. He even tried to keep the governor from having faith in the Lord.
9 Then Saul, better known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit. He looked straight at Elymas 10 and said, “You son of the devil! You are a liar, a crook, and an enemy of everything that is right. When will you stop speaking against the true ways of the Lord?

11 The Lord is going to punish you by making you completely blind for a while.”
Suddenly the man's eyes were covered by a dark mist, and he went around trying to get someone to lead him by the hand.

12 When the governor saw what had happened, he was amazed at this teaching about the Lord. So he put his faith in the Lord.

14 The rest of them went on from Perga to Antioch in Pisidia. Then on the Sabbath they went to the synagogue and sat down.

15 After the reading of the Law and the Prophets, t the leaders sent someone over to tell Paul and Barnabas, “Friends, if you have anything to say that will help the people, please say it.”

16 Paul got up. He motioned with his hand and said:
People of Israel, and everyone else who worships God, listen! 17 t The God of Israel chose our ancestors, and he let our people prosper while they were living in Egypt. Then with his mighty power he led them out, 18 t and for about 40 years he took care oft them in the desert. 19 t He destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan and gave their land to our people.

20 t All this happened in about 450 years.
Then God gave our people judges until the time of the prophet Samuel, 21 t but the people demanded a king. So for 40 years God gave them King Saul, the son of Kish from the tribe of Benjamin.

22 t Later, God removed Saul and let David rule in his place. God said about him, “David the son of Jesse is the kind of person who pleases me most! He does everything I want him to do.”
23 God promised that someone from David's family would come to save the people of Israel, and this one is Jesus. 24 t But before Jesus came, John was telling everyone in Israel to turn back to God and be baptized.

25 t Then, when John's work was almost done, he said, “Who do you people think I am? Do you think I am the Promised One? He will come later, and I am not good enough to untie his sandals.”
26 Now listen, you descendants of Abraham! Pay attention, all of you Gentiles who are here to worship God! Listen to this message about how to be saved, because it is for everyone.

27 The people of Jerusalem and their leaders didn't realize who Jesus was. And they didn't understand the words of the prophets they read each Sabbath. So they condemned Jesus just as the prophets had said.

28-29  t t They did exactly what the Scriptures said they would. Even though they couldn't find any reason to put Jesus to death, they still asked Pilate to have him killed.
After Jesus had been put to death, he was taken down from the crosst and placed in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from death!

31 t Then for many days Jesus appeared to his followers who had gone with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. Now they are telling our people about him.
32 God made a promise to our ancestors. And we are here to tell you the good news

33 t that he has kept this promise to us. It is just as the second Psalm says about Jesus,
“You are my son because today
I have become your Father.”

34  t God raised Jesus from death and will never let his body decay. It is just as God said,
“I will make to you
the same holy promises
that I made to David.”

35  t And in another psalm it says, “God will never let the body of his Holy One decay.”
36 When David was alive, he obeyed God. Then after he died, he was buried in the family grave, and his body decayed.

37 But God raised Jesus from death, and his body did not decay.
38 My friends, the message is that Jesus can forgive your sins! The Law of Moses could not set you free from all your sins. 39 But everyone who has faith in Jesus is set free.

40 Make sure what the prophets have said doesn't happen to you. They said,

41  t “Look, you people
who make fun of God!
Be amazed
and disappear.
I will do something today
that you won't believe,
even if someone
tells you about it!”
42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people begged them to say more about these same things on the next Sabbath.

43 After the service, many Jews and a lot of Gentiles who worshiped God went with them. Paul and Barnabas begged them all to remain faithful to God, who had treated them with undeserved grace.
44 The next Sabbath almost everyone in town came to hear the message about the Lord.t

45 When the Jewish people saw the crowds, they were very jealous. They insulted Paul and spoke against everything he said.

46 But Paul and Barnabas bravely said:
We had to tell God's message to you before we told it to anyone else. But you rejected the message! This proves that you don't deserve eternal life. Now we are going to the Gentiles.

47 t The Lord has given us this command,
“I have placed you here
as a light
for the Gentiles.
You are to take
the saving power of God
to people everywhere on earth.”

48 This message made the Gentiles glad, and they praised what they had heard about the Lord.t Everyone who had been chosen for eternal life then put their faith in the Lord.
49 The message about the Lord spread all over this region.

50 But the Jewish leaders went to some of the important men in the town and to some respected women who were religious. They turned them against Paul and Barnabas and started making trouble for them. They even chased them out of this part of the country.

51  t Paul and Barnabas shook the dust from that place off their feett and went on to the city of Iconium.
52 But the Lord's followers in Antioch were very happy and were filled with the Holy Spirit.
