一九

1 アポロがコリントにいる間に、パウロはトルコを通ってエペソに来ました。　そこで会った何人かの弟子たちに、パウロは尋ねました。　2 「ところで、信じた時、聖霊様を受けましたか。」
「いったい何のことでしょう。　聖霊なんて聞いたこともありません。」
3 「それじゃあ、バプテスマ（洗礼）を受けた時、どんな信仰告白をしたんです？」
「バプテスマのヨハネの教えた......。」
4 これを聞いたパウロは、ヨハネのバプテスマは、罪を離れて神に立ち返る決意を表わすものだから、それを受けた者が、ヨハネの証言どおり、あとから来られたイエスを信じるのは、当然のことだと説明しました。
5 彼らはすぐ、主イエスの名によってバプテスマを受けました。　6 そして、パウロが彼らの頭に手を置くと、聖霊が下りました。　すると彼らは、外国語で話したり、預言したりし始めたのです。　7 みなで十二名ほどの人でした。
8 このあと、パウロは会堂で、三か月の間、安息日ごとに大胆に説教し、神の国のことを教えました。　9 中には、パウロの話を非難し、人々の面前で、キリストに逆らうことばを吐く連中もいました。　そんな連中は、もう二度と相手にしないことに決め、会堂での説教はそれっきりになりました。　代わりに、クリスチャンたちを誘って、ツラノの講堂で別の集会を開き、毎日そこで説教しました。　10 これが二年間も続いたので、トルコのアジヤ地方に住む人たちは、ユダヤ人だろうが外国人だろうが、主の教えを聞かない人は、ほとんどいないほどでした。　11 しかもパウロは、すばらしい奇蹟を行なう力にも恵まれたので、　12 彼の手ぬぐいや、前かけを病人にかけるだけで、病気は治り、悪霊は出て行きました。
13 ところで、町から町へと渡り歩く、ユダヤ人の魔よけ祈祷師の一行がありました。　そこで、試しに主イエスの名を使ってみようという話が持ち上がり、「パウロが伝えているイエスによって命令する。　出て行けっ！」と、まじないを唱えることにしました。　14 こんなことをしたのは、実は、ユダヤの祭司長スケワの七人の息子たちでした。　15 ところが、悪霊に取りつかれた人に実際に試してみると、結果はさんざんでした。　悪霊は、平然と「イエスなら知ってる。　パウロだって知ってる。　だが、おまえらは何者だ」と言い返してきたのです。　16 そればかりか、悪霊に取りつかれた男が、一行のうちの二人に飛びかかり、めったやたらになぐりつけたので、裸にはされるし、重傷は負うしで、命からがら、やっとその家から逃げ出しました。
17 この出来事は、あっという間に、エペソ中のユダヤ人やギリシヤ人に伝わり、町中が大きな恐れに包まれると同時に、主イエスの御名がほめたたえられました。　18-19 それまで魔術を行なっていた信者たちも、そのことを告白し、呪文の本やお札を持ってきて山と積み上げ、みんなの見ている前で焼き捨てました。　ざっと見積っても、銀貨五万枚にはなりそうな量でした。　20 このこと一つ取ってみても、この地方一帯が、どれだけ神のことばによって揺り動かされたか、よくわかります。
エペソでの騒動
21 事件が一段落すると、パウロは聖霊の導きで、ギリシヤを回ってから、エルサレムに帰ることにしました。　あとでローマへも行くつもりでした。　それをはっきりさせると、　22 まず、助手のテモテとエラストとをギリシヤへやり、自分は、なおしばらくトルコにとどまりました。
23 ちょうどそのころ、エペソで、クリスチャンのことで大騒動が持ち上がりました。　24 事を起こしたのは、デメテリオという銀細工人です。　この男は職人を大ぜい雇い、ギリシヤの女神アルテミスの神殿の模型作りを手広くやっていました。　25 この男が、自分のところの職人や同業者を集めて、たいそうな演説をぶったのです。
「皆さん。　私たちは神殿の模型作りで食べています。　26 ところがですよ、ご存じのように、あのパウロとかいうやつが、手で作ったものは神じゃないなどと、不届きなことをぬかし、大ぜいの人にふれ回っているのです。　おかげで、こちらの売り上げは、がた落ちです。　エペソばかりか、この地方全体がそうなんです。　27 もちろん、商売が圧迫されるとか、もうけが減るとかいったことだけを、とやかく言うつもりはありません。　私が声を大にして叫びたいことは、このままでは、偉大な女神アルテミス様の神殿のご威光が薄れ、トルコのこの地方は言うにおよばず、世界中の人たちが礼拝してきた、すばらしい女神アルテミス様が忘れられてしまうということです。」
28 この演説で、人々は逆上し、大声で「偉大なのはエペソ人の女神アルテミス様だっ！」とわめき始めました。
29 たちまち町中は大混乱です。　人々はパウロに同行したガイオとアリスタルコとを裁判にかけようと、二人をむりやり引っ立て、円形劇場へなだれ込みました。　30 これを見て中に入ろうとするパウロを、弟子たちが必死に押しとどめました。　31 パウロの友人であるこの地方のローマの役人たちも、使いの者をよこし、危険だから、くれぐれも中へは入らないように、と言ってきました。
32 一方、劇場の中では、各人がてんでんばらばらのことをわめき立てるので、ほとんどの人が、なぜ集まっているのかさえ、わからない有様でした。
33 そうこうするうちに、ユダヤ人たちが、群衆の中からアレキサンデルという男を前に押しやりました。　演説させようというのです。　アレキサンデルは、進み出て、静かにするよう身ぶりで合図しました。　34 しかし、彼がユダヤ人だとわかると、群衆は、前よりも激しく騒ぎだし、手のつけようがありません。　「エペソ人の偉大な女神アルテミス様、ばんざーいっ！　ばんざーいっ！」と二時間も叫び続けました。
35 とうとう市長が乗り出し、やっとのことで、なんとか話ができるまでに騒ぎを静めました。　「市民の皆さん。　エペソが偉大なアルテミス様の宗教の本山であることは、だれもが知っています。　アルテミス様のご神体は、天から、われわれのもとに下って来たのです。　36 それは、はっきりしているのだから、何を言われても、あわてることはありません。　くれぐれも軽はずみなことだけは、しないようにしてください。　37 さて、ここへ連れて来た二人のことですが、女神の神殿から何かを盗み出したり、女神を冒涜したりしたわけではありません。　38 もしデメテリオや職人たちが、二人を訴えたいのなら、法廷があるのだから、裁判官の前に持ち出せばいいのです。　何事も法律にのっとって進めてもらいたいですね。　39 また、それ以外のことで不平があれば、定例の市議会に提出すればすむことです。　40 とにかく、今日のこの騒動は、ローマ政府から騒擾罪に問われるかもしれません。　なにしろ、正当な理由が一つもないのだから、どうなっても、責任は負えませんよ。」
41 こうして、市長は人々を解散させました。

Acts 19

1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples:2 and he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they said unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was given.3 And he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John’s baptism.4 And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus.5 And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.7 And they were in all about twelve men.8 And he entered into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, reasoning and persuading as to the things concerning the kingdom of God.9 But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.10 And this continued for the space of two years; so that all they that dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:12 insomuch that unto the sick were carried away from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the evil spirits went out.13 But certain also of the strolling Jews, exorcists, took upon them to name over them that had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, who did this.15 And the evil spirit answered and said unto them, Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye?16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and mastered both of them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.17 And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.18 Many also of them that had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.19 And not a few of them that practised magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.20 So mightily grew the word of the Lord and prevailed.21 Now after these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.22 And having sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.23 And about that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no little business unto the craftsmen;25 whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this business we have our wealth.26 And ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands:27 and not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana be made of no account, and that she should even be deposed from her magnificence whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.28 And when they heard this they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesus.29 And the city was filled with the confusion: and they rushed with one accord into the theatre, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.30 And when Paul was minded to enter in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.31 And certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent unto him and besought him not to adventure himself into the theatre.32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was in confusion; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.33 And they brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made a defense unto the people.34 But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.35 And when the townclerk had quieted the multitude, he saith, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?36 Seeing then that these things cannot be gainsaid, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.37 For ye have brought hither these men, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.38 If therefore Demetrius, and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.39 But if ye seek anything about other matters, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.40 For indeed we are in danger to be accused concerning this day’s riot, there being no cause for it: and as touching it we shall not be able to give account of this concourse.41 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
