사도행전 19

에베소에서

1 아볼로가 고린도에 있는 동안 바울은 윗 지방을 거쳐 에베소에 왔다. 바울 은 거기서 몇몇 신자들을 만나 물었다.

2 “여러분은 믿을 때에 성령을 받았습니까?” “우리는 성령이 있다는 것도 듣지 못했습니다.”

3 “그렇다면 여러분은 무슨 세례를 받았습니까?” “요한의 세례입니다.”

4 “요한은 회개의 세례를 주면서 사람들에게 자기 뒤에 오시는 분을 믿으라고 했는데 그분이 곧 예수님이십니다.”

5 그들은 이 말을 듣고 주 예수님의 이름으로 세례를 받았다.

6 바울이 그들에게 손을 얹자 성령이 내려 그들은 방언도 하고 예언도 했는데

7 모두 열두 사람쯤 되었다.

8 바울은 회당에 들어가 석 달 동안 담대하게 하나님의 나라에 대하여 말하고 사람들과 토론하며 그들을 설득하였다.

9 그러나 어떤 사람들은 마음이 굳어 믿으려 하지 않고 오히려 공공연하게 2바울의 가르침을 비난하였다. 그래서 바울은 신자들을 데리고 그들을 떠나 날마다 두란노 학원에서 가르쳤다.

10 이렇게 두 해를 계속하는 동안 3아시아에 사는 유대인과 그리스 사람들이 모두 주님의 말씀을 듣게 되었다.

11 하나님은 바울을 통해 희한한 기적들을 행하셨다.

12 심지어 바울이 사용하던 손수건이나 앞치마를 가져다가 병든 사람에게 대기만 해도 병이 낫고 악한 귀신들이 나갔다.

13 이때 몇몇 떠돌이 유대인 무당들도 주 예수님의 이름을 이용하여 귀신들을 쫓아내려고 하였다. 그들은 악한 귀신들에게 “바울이 전하는 예수의 이름으로 내가 너희에게 명령한다. 4나오너라” 하고 외쳤다.

14 유대인의 대제사장 스게와의 일곱 아들들이 이런 짓을 하였다.

15 그러자 악한 귀신이 “나는 예수님도 알고 바울도 아는데 도대체 너희는 누구냐?” 하고 대답하였다.

16 그러고서 귀신 들린 사람이 그들에게 달려들어 모두 때려 눕히자 그들은 상처를 입고 벗은 몸으로 그 집에서 도망쳐 나왔다.

17 에베소에 사는 유대인들과 그리스 사람들이 이 소문을 듣고 모두 두려워하며 주 예수님의 이름을 높이 찬양하였다.

18 그리고 많은 신자들도 찾아와서 자기들이 행한 일을 공적으로 고백하였고

19 많은 마술사들도 그들의 마술책을 모아 가지고 와서 사람들이 보는 데서 불태웠는데 그 책값은 무려 550,000드라크마나 되었다.

20 이렇게 해서 주님의 말씀은 힘 있게 계속 퍼져나갔다.

에베소의 소동

21 그 후에 바울은 마케도니아와 아가야를 거쳐 예루살렘에 올라가기로 결심하고 “내가 거기 갔다가 후에 로마에도 가 봐야겠다”고 하였다.

22 바울은 자기를 돕는 사람 가운데 디모데와 에라스도 두 사람을 마케도니아로 보내고 그는 아시아에 얼마 동안 더 머물러 있었다.

23 그 무렵 6사도들이 전한 주님의 말씀 때문에 에베소에 큰 소란이 일어났다.

24 거기에 데메드리오라는 은세공인이 있었는데 그는 은으로 아데미 여신의 모조 신전을 만들어 직공들에게 적지 않은 돈벌이를 하게 하였다.

25 그가 하루는 직공들과 동업자들을 불러 놓고 이렇게 말하였다. “여러분, 우리는 이 사업으로 잘 살고 있습니다.

26 그런데 바울이라는 사람이 사람의 손으로 만든 것은 신이 아니라면서 에베소뿐만 아니라 온 아시아에서 많은 사람들을 설득하여 그들의 마음을 돌려 놓은 것을 여러분도 보고 들었을 줄 압니다.

27 이러다가는 우리 사업에 대한 명성을 잃을 위험이 있을 뿐만 아니라 위대한 여신 아데미의 신전도 무가치하게 될 위험이 있습니다. 그렇게 되면 아시아와 온 세계가 섬기는 아데미 여신의 위엄마저 사라져 버릴 것입니다.”

28 그들은 이 말을 듣고 화가 머리 끝까지 치밀어 올라 “위대한 에베소의 여신 아데미여!” 하며 고래고래 소리쳤다.

29 이 일로 그 도시가 온통 소란해졌으며 군중들이 바울과 같이 다니던 마케도니아 사람 가이오와 아리스다고를 잡아가지고 일제히 연극장으로 달려갔다.

30 그때 바울이 군중들 앞에 나가려고 하자 신자들이 못 가게 말렸고

31 또 아시아 지방의 로마 관리 중 바울의 몇몇 친구들도 사람을 보내 연극장에 들어가지 말라고 간곡히 말렸다.

32 한편 군중들은 왜 모였는지조차 모르고 저마다 떠들어대서 연극장 안이 야단 법석이었다.

33 그때 몇몇 유대인들이 알렉산더라는 사람을 군중들 앞에 내세웠다. 그래서 알렉산더가 모두 조용히 하라고 손짓을 하며 변명하려고 하였으나

34 군중들은 그가 유대인이라는 것을 알고 일제히 “위대한 에베소의 여신 아데미여!” 하며 약 두 시간 동안이나 외쳐댔다.

35 마침내 7서기장이 나와 군중들을 진정시키고 이렇게 말하였다. “에베소 시민 여러분, 우리 도시가 위대한 여신 아데미의 신전과 하늘에서 내려온 신상의 수호자가 된 것은 모든 사람이 다 아는 일이 아닙니까?

36 이것은 부정할 수 없는 사실입니다. 그러므로 여러분은 진정하고 경솔하게 행동하지 마십시오.

37 여러분이 끌고 온 이 사람들은 신전의 물건을 훔치지도 않았고 우리 여신을 모독하지도 않았습니다.

38 그러므로 데메드리오와 또 함께 온 직공 여러분이 고소할 사람이 있으면 재판할 날도 있고 총독들도 있으니 거기에 가서 고소하도록 하고

39 그 밖에 다른 문제가 있으면 합법적인 8모임에서 해결짓도록 하십시오.

40 아무 이유도 없는 오늘의 이 소란 때문에 우리가 로마 정부로부터 문책당할 위험이 있습니다. 그렇게 된다면 이 불법 집회에 대하여 우리는 변명할 말이 없을 것입니다.”

41 이렇게 말하고서 그는 군중들을 해산시켰다.

Acts 19

1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples:2 and he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they said unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was given.3 And he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John’s baptism.4 And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus.5 And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.7 And they were in all about twelve men.8 And he entered into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, reasoning and persuading as to the things concerning the kingdom of God.9 But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.10 And this continued for the space of two years; so that all they that dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:12 insomuch that unto the sick were carried away from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the evil spirits went out.13 But certain also of the strolling Jews, exorcists, took upon them to name over them that had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, who did this.15 And the evil spirit answered and said unto them, Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye?16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and mastered both of them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.17 And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.18 Many also of them that had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.19 And not a few of them that practised magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.20 So mightily grew the word of the Lord and prevailed.21 Now after these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.22 And having sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.23 And about that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no little business unto the craftsmen;25 whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this business we have our wealth.26 And ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands:27 and not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana be made of no account, and that she should even be deposed from her magnificence whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.28 And when they heard this they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesus.29 And the city was filled with the confusion: and they rushed with one accord into the theatre, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.30 And when Paul was minded to enter in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.31 And certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent unto him and besought him not to adventure himself into the theatre.32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was in confusion; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.33 And they brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made a defense unto the people.34 But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.35 And when the townclerk had quieted the multitude, he saith, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?36 Seeing then that these things cannot be gainsaid, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.37 For ye have brought hither these men, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.38 If therefore Demetrius, and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.39 But if ye seek anything about other matters, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.40 For indeed we are in danger to be accused concerning this day’s riot, there being no cause for it: and as touching it we shall not be able to give account of this concourse.41 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
