Apostelgjerningane 19

Paulus i Efesos

1 Medan Apollos var i Korint, drog Paulus gjennom innlandet og kom til Efesos. Der møtte han nokre læresveinar 2 t og spurde dei: «Fekk de Den heilage ande då de kom til tru?» Dei svara: «Vi har ikkje eingong høyrt at det er nokon Heilag Ande.» 3 t «Kva dåp vart de då døypte med?» spurde han. «Med Johannes-dåpen», svara dei. 4 t Då sa Paulus: «Johannes døypte med ein dåp til omvending. Han sa til folket at dei skulle tru på den som kom etter han, det er Jesus.» 5 t Då dei høyrde det, lét dei seg døypa til Herren Jesu namn. 6 t Og då Paulus la hendene på dei, kom Den heilage ande over dei. Dei tala i tunger, og dei tala profetisk.

7 Det var om lag tolv menn i alt.
8 Sidan gjekk han til synagogen, og der tala han med stort frimod i tre månader. Han samtala med folk og overtydde dei om det som høyrer Guds rike til. 9 tt Men det var nokre som gjorde seg harde og ikkje ville tru. Dei tala vondt om Vegen så alle høyrde på. Då braut Paulus med dei og tok læresveinane med. Sidan hadde han kvar dag samtalar i skulen til Tyrannos.

10 Dette heldt han fram med i to år, så alle som budde i Asia, både jødar og grekarar, fekk høyra Herrens ord.

Dei sju sønene til Skevas


11  t Gud gjorde uvanlege under gjennom Paulus. 12 t Det hende til og med at folk tok lommeplagg og arbeidsklede som han hadde brukt, og la på dei sjuke. Då sleppte sjukdomen taket, og dei vonde åndene fór ut. 13 Nokre jødar som reiste omkring og dreiv med åndemaning, freista òg å seia fram Herren Jesu namn over dei som hadde vonde ånder i seg, og sa: «Eg byd dykk ved den Jesus som Paulus forkynner.» 14 Skevas, ein jødisk overprest, hadde sju søner som dreiv på med dette. 15 Men den vonde ånda svara dei: «Jesus kjenner eg, og Paulus veit eg om. Men kven er de?» 16 Og mannen som hadde den vonde ånda i seg, flaug på dei, overmanna dei alle og skamfór dei, så dei måtte rømma ut or huset, nakne og såra. 17 t Dette vart kjent for alle som budde i Efesos, både jødar og grekarar. Det kom redsle over dei alle, og Herren Jesu namn vart lovprisa. 18 Mange av dei truande kom og skrifta og fortalde kva dei hadde gjort. 19 t Og mange av dei som hadde fare med svartekunster, kom med bøkene sine og brende dei for auga på alle. Dei rekna ut kva bøkene var verde, og kom til at det var 50 000 sølvpengar.

20 t Såleis breidde Ordet seg ut og fekk stor framgang ved Herrens makt.
21  t Då alt dette var fullført, sette Paulus seg føre å dra gjennom Makedonia og Akaia og heilt til Jerusalem. Og han sa: «Når eg har vore der, må eg reisa til Roma òg.»

22 t Så sende han Timoteus og Erastos, to av dei som stod i tenesta saman med han, til Makedonia. Sjølv vart han verande endå ei tid i Asia.

Uro i Efesos


23  t På den tida vart det ei stor uro om Vegen. 24 t Ein sølvsmed som heitte Demetrios, laga Artemis-tempel av sølv og hjelpte handverkarane til god inntekt. 25 Ein dag kalla han saman både dei og arbeidarane som dreiv med dette, og sa: «Godt folk! De veit at velstanden vår kjem frå dette arbeidet. 26 t Men no kan de både sjå og høyra korleis denne Paulus overtalar menneske i store mengder og fører dei vill, ikkje berre her i Efesos, men i mest heile Asia. Han seier at gudar som er laga av menneskehender, ikkje er gudar. 27 Det er fare for at yrket vårt får dårleg ord på seg, men verre er det at tempelet til Artemis, den store gudinna vår, kan bli rekna for ingen ting, og at ho som heile Asia, ja, heile verda dyrkar, kan koma til å mista sitt velde.» 28 Då dei høyrde det, vart dei rasande og ropa: «Stor er efesargudinna Artemis!» 29 tt Uroa breidde seg over heile byen, og alle som ein storma av stad til teateret og drog med seg Gaius og Aristarkos, to makedonarar som hadde følgt Paulus på reisa. 30 Paulus ville gå inn i folkehopen, men læresveinane hindra han. 31 Nokre av dei høgste embetsmennene i provinsen, som var mellom venene hans, sende òg bod til han at han ikkje måtte våga seg inn i teateret. 32 Forsamlinga var no i fullt opprør. Somme skreik éin ting, andre noko anna, og dei fleste visste ikkje eingong kvifor dei hadde kome saman. 33 Då skuva jødane fram ein mann som heitte Aleksander, og nokre i flokken sette han inn i saka. Aleksander gjorde teikn med handa og ville halda ein forsvarstale til folket. 34 t Men då dei skjøna at han var jøde, skreik dei alle i kor i to samfulle timar: «Stor er efesargudinna Artemis!» 35 t Men byskrivaren roa folkehopen og sa: «Efesarar, finst det noko menneske som ikkje veit at efesarbyen er sett til vaktar for tempelet til den store Artemis og steinen som har falle ned frå himmelen? 36 Dette kan ingen nekta, og difor bør de no vera rolege og ikkje fara for brått fram. 37 No har de ført hit desse mennene som verken er tempelranarar eller har spotta gudinna vår. 38 Vil Demetrios og handverkarane hans reisa sak mot nokon, så har vi dei vanlege rettsmøta, og vi har våre guvernørar. Partane kan stemna kvarandre for retten. 39 Og har de noko anna å krevja, skal det bli avgjort på det lovlege folketinget. 40 Etter det som har hendt i dag, kan vi lett bli klaga for opprør. Og vi har ingen ting å visa til om nokon krev oss til rekneskap for dette oppstyret.» Med desse orda fekk han folkehopen til å skiljast.

ACTS 19

Paul in Ephesus

1 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled across the hill country to Ephesus, where he met some of the Lord's followers.

2 He asked them, “When you put your faith in Jesus, were you given the Holy Spirit?”
“No!” they answered. “We have never even heard of the Holy Spirit.”

3 “Then why were you baptized?” Paul asked.
They answered, “Because of what John taught.”t
4  t Paul replied, “John baptized people so they would turn to God. But he also told them someone else was coming, and they should put their faith in him. Jesus is the one that John was talking about.” 5 After the people heard Paul say this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 Then Paul placed his hands on them. The Holy Spirit was given to them, and they spoke unknown languages and prophesied.

7 There were about twelve men in this group.
8 For three months Paul went to the synagogue and talked bravely with the people about God's kingdom. He tried to win them over, 9 but some of them were stubborn and refused to believe. In front of everyone they said terrible things about God's Way. Paul left and took the followers with him to the lecture hall of Tyrannus. He spoke there every day

10 for two years, until every Jew and Gentilet in Asia had heard the Lord's message.

The Sons of Sceva


11 God gave Paul the power to work great miracles.

12 People even took handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched Paul's body, and they carried them to everyone who was sick. All of the sick people were healed, and the evil spirits went out.

13 Some Jewish men started going around trying to force out evil spirits by using the name of the Lord Jesus. They said to the spirits, “Come out in the name of that same Jesus that Paul preaches about!”
14 Seven sons of a high priest named Sceva were doing this, 15 when an evil spirit said to them, “I know Jesus! And I have heard about Paul. But who are you?”

16 Then the man with the evil spirit jumped on them and beat them up. They ran out of the house, naked and bruised.
17 When the Jews and Gentilest in Ephesus heard about this, they were so frightened that they praised the name of the Lord Jesus. 18 Many who were followers now started telling everyone about the evil things they had been doing. 19 Some who had been practicing witchcraft even brought their books and burned them in public. These books were worth about 50,000 silver coins.

20 So the Lord's message spread and became even more powerful.

The Riot in Ephesus


21 After all this had happened, Paul decidedt to visit Macedonia and Achaia on his way to Jerusalem. Paul had said, “From there I will go on to Rome.”

22 So he sent his two helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia. But he stayed on in Asia for a while.
23 At that time there was serious trouble because of the Lord's Way.t 24 A silversmith named Demetrius had a business that made silver models of the temple of the goddess Artemis. Those who worked for him earned a lot of money.

25 Demetrius brought together everyone who was in the same business and said:
Friends, you know we make a good living at this. 26 But you have surely seen and heard how this man Paul is upsetting a lot of people, not only in Ephesus, but almost everywhere in Asia. He claims that the gods we humans make are not really gods at all.

27 Everyone will start saying terrible things about our business. They will stop respecting the temple of the goddess Artemis, who is worshiped in Asia and all over the world. Our great goddess will be forgotten!
28 When the workers heard this, they got angry and started shouting, “Great is Artemis, the goddess of the Ephesians!”

29 Soon the whole city was in a riot, and some men grabbed Gaius and Aristarchus, who had come from Macedonia with Paul. Then everyone in the crowd rushed to the place where the town meetings were held.
30 Paul wanted to go out and speak to the people, but the Lord's followers would not let him.

31 A few of the local officials were friendly to Paul, and they sent someone to warn him not to go.

32 Some of the people in the meeting were shouting one thing, and others were shouting something else. Everyone was completely confused, and most of them did not even know why they were there.
33 Several of the Jewish leaders pushed a man named Alexander to the front of the crowd and started telling him what to say. He motioned with his hand and tried to explain what was going on.

34 But when the crowd saw that he was Jewish, they all shouted for two hours, “Great is Artemis, the goddess of the Ephesians!”

35 Finally, a town official made the crowd be quiet. Then he said:
People of Ephesus, who in the world doesn't know that our city is the center for worshiping the great goddess Artemis? Who doesn't know that her image which fell from heaven is right here? 36 No one can deny this, and so you should calm down and not do anything foolish.

37 You have brought men in here who have not robbed temples or spoken against our goddess.
38 If Demetrius and his workers have a case against these men, we have courts and judges. Let them take their complaints there. 39 But if you want to do more than that, the matter will have to be brought before the city council.

40 We could easily be accused of starting a riot today. There is no excuse for it! We cannot even give a reason for this uproar.
41 After saying this, he told the people to leave.
