Paulus i Efesus

1 Medan Apollos var i Korint kom Paulus ner till Efesus, sedan han rest genom höglandet. Där träffade han några lärjungar,2 och han frågade dem: "Tog ni emot den helige Ande när ni kom till tro?" De svarade honom: "Nej, vi har inte ens hört att den helige Ande har blivit utgjuten."t3 Då frågade han: "Vilket dop blev ni döpta med?" De svarade: "Med Johannes dop."4 Paulus sade: "Johannes döpte med omvändelsens dop och uppmanade folket att tro på den som kom efter honom, det vill säga på Jesus."5 När de fick höra detta döptes de i Herren Jesu namn.6 Och när Paulus lade händerna på dem, kom den helige Ande över dem, och de talade med tungor och profeterade.7 Tillsammans var det omkring tolv män.8 Sedan gick han in i synagogan och under tre månader predikade han frimodigt. Han samtalade med dem och försökte övertyga dem om det som hör till Guds rike.9 Men där fanns några som förhärdade sig och inte ville tro utan talade illa om 'den vägen', så att alla hörde det. Då lämnade han dem och tog lärjungarna med sig, och varje dag höll han samtal i Tyrannus hörsal.10 Detta pågick under två år, så att alla som bodde i Asien, judar och greker, fick höra Herrens ord.11 Gud gjorde ovanliga under genom Paulus händer,12 så att man till och med tog dukar och plagg som varit i beröring med hans hud och lade på de sjuka, och sjukdomarna lämnade dem och de onda andarna for ut.13 Några kringvandrande judiska andeutdrivare tog sig också för att uttala Herren Jesu namn över dem som hade onda andar. De sade: "Jag besvär er vid den Jesus som Paulus predikar."14 Det var sju söner till en viss Skevas, en judisk överstepräst, som gjorde så.15 Men den onde anden svarade dem: "Jesus känner jag till, och vem Paulus är vet jag, men vilka är ni?"16 Och mannen som hade den onde anden kastade sig över dem, övermannade alla och misshandlade dem så svårt att de måste fly ut ur huset, nakna och blodiga.17 Detta fick alla i Efesus veta, både judar och greker, och fruktan kom över dem alla, och Herren Jesu namn blev prisat.18 Många av dem som trodde kom och bekände öppet vad de tidigare hade gjort.19 Åtskilliga av dem som hade bedrivit trolldom samlade ihop sina böcker och brände upp dem offentligt. Man räknade ut vad de var värda och kom fram till femtiotusen silverdrakmer.t20 På detta sätt hade ordet genom Herrens kraft framgång och visade sin styrka.

Oroligheter i Efesus

21 När detta var slutfört bestämde sig Paulus för att genom Makedonien och Akaja resa till Jerusalem. Han sade: "Och när jag har varit där måste jag också besöka Rom."22 Han sände två av sina medhjälpare, Timoteus och Erastus, till Makedonien och stannade själv en tid i Asien.23 Vid den tiden uppstod det stor oro med anledning av 'den vägen'.24 En silversmed som hette Demetrius, tillverkade Artemistempelt av silver och skaffade därmed hantverkarna stora inkomster.25 Nu kallade han samman dem och sådana som hade liknande arbeten och sade: "Ni män, ni vet att vi har vårt välstånd av detta arbete.26 Och nu ser ni och hör hur den där Paulus har vilselett en massa människor, inte bara i Efesus utan i nästan hela Asien, med sitt tal om att gudar som är tillverkade av händer inte är några gudar.27 Det är fara värt inte endast att vårt hantverk får dåligt rykte utan också att den stora gudinnan Artemis tempel förlorar sitt anseende, och att den gudinna som hela Asien, ja, hela världen dyrkar, mister sin gudomliga storhet."28 När de hörde detta blev de ursinniga och skrek: "Stor är efesiernas Artemis!"t29 Hela staden kom i uppror, och folk rusade alla på en gång till teatern och släpade med sig Gajus och Aristarkus, två makedonier som var Paulus följeslagare.30 Paulus ville gå in till folket men hindrades av lärjungarna.31 Några asiarkert som var hans vänner skickade också bud till honom och bad att han inte skulle ge sig in på teatern.32 Där skrek några ett, andra något annat. Folkmassan var i uppror, och de flesta visste inte ens varför de hade samlats.33 Några ur hopen förklarade för Alexander vad saken gällde, och judarna skickade fram honom. Han gav tecken med handen och ville hålla ett försvarstal inför folket.34 Men när de märkte att han var jude, ropade de alla på en gång i ett par timmar: "Stor är efesiernas Artemis!"35 Men stadens sekreterare lugnade folket och sade: "Efesier, finns det någon enda människa som inte känner till att efesiernas stad är vårdare av den stora Artemis tempel och hennes bild som har fallit ner från himlen?t36 Eftersom ingen kan neka till detta, bör ni hålla er lugna och inte göra något förhastat.37 Ni har fört hit de här männen som varken har rånat tempel eller hädat vår gudinna.38 Om nu Demetrius och hans hantverkare vill föra talan mot någon, så hålls det rättegångar och finns det landshövdingar. Inför sådana skall de anklaga varandra.39 Och om det är något mer ni vill ta upp, skall det avgöras i den lagliga folkförsamlingen.40 På grund av det som har hänt i dag riskerar vi att bli anklagade för uppror. Vi har ju inte något skäl att anföra när vi skall stå till svars för dessa oroligheter." Och efter att ha sagt det upplöste han folksamlingen.

ACTS 19

Paul in Ephesus

1 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled across the hill country to Ephesus, where he met some of the Lord's followers.

2 He asked them, “When you put your faith in Jesus, were you given the Holy Spirit?”
“No!” they answered. “We have never even heard of the Holy Spirit.”

3 “Then why were you baptized?” Paul asked.
They answered, “Because of what John taught.”t
4  t Paul replied, “John baptized people so they would turn to God. But he also told them someone else was coming, and they should put their faith in him. Jesus is the one that John was talking about.” 5 After the people heard Paul say this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 Then Paul placed his hands on them. The Holy Spirit was given to them, and they spoke unknown languages and prophesied.

7 There were about twelve men in this group.
8 For three months Paul went to the synagogue and talked bravely with the people about God's kingdom. He tried to win them over, 9 but some of them were stubborn and refused to believe. In front of everyone they said terrible things about God's Way. Paul left and took the followers with him to the lecture hall of Tyrannus. He spoke there every day

10 for two years, until every Jew and Gentilet in Asia had heard the Lord's message.

The Sons of Sceva

12 People even took handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched Paul's body, and they carried them to everyone who was sick. All of the sick people were healed, and the evil spirits went out.

13 Some Jewish men started going around trying to force out evil spirits by using the name of the Lord Jesus. They said to the spirits, “Come out in the name of that same Jesus that Paul preaches about!”
14 Seven sons of a high priest named Sceva were doing this, 15 when an evil spirit said to them, “I know Jesus! And I have heard about Paul. But who are you?”

16 Then the man with the evil spirit jumped on them and beat them up. They ran out of the house, naked and bruised.
17 When the Jews and Gentilest in Ephesus heard about this, they were so frightened that they praised the name of the Lord Jesus. 18 Many who were followers now started telling everyone about the evil things they had been doing. 19 Some who had been practicing witchcraft even brought their books and burned them in public. These books were worth about 50,000 silver coins.

20 So the Lord's message spread and became even more powerful.

The Riot in Ephesus

22 So he sent his two helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia. But he stayed on in Asia for a while.
23 At that time there was serious trouble because of the Lord's Way.t 24 A silversmith named Demetrius had a business that made silver models of the temple of the goddess Artemis. Those who worked for him earned a lot of money.

25 Demetrius brought together everyone who was in the same business and said:
Friends, you know we make a good living at this. 26 But you have surely seen and heard how this man Paul is upsetting a lot of people, not only in Ephesus, but almost everywhere in Asia. He claims that the gods we humans make are not really gods at all.

27 Everyone will start saying terrible things about our business. They will stop respecting the temple of the goddess Artemis, who is worshiped in Asia and all over the world. Our great goddess will be forgotten!
28 When the workers heard this, they got angry and started shouting, “Great is Artemis, the goddess of the Ephesians!”

29 Soon the whole city was in a riot, and some men grabbed Gaius and Aristarchus, who had come from Macedonia with Paul. Then everyone in the crowd rushed to the place where the town meetings were held.
30 Paul wanted to go out and speak to the people, but the Lord's followers would not let him.

31 A few of the local officials were friendly to Paul, and they sent someone to warn him not to go.

32 Some of the people in the meeting were shouting one thing, and others were shouting something else. Everyone was completely confused, and most of them did not even know why they were there.
33 Several of the Jewish leaders pushed a man named Alexander to the front of the crowd and started telling him what to say. He motioned with his hand and tried to explain what was going on.

34 But when the crowd saw that he was Jewish, they all shouted for two hours, “Great is Artemis, the goddess of the Ephesians!”

35 Finally, a town official made the crowd be quiet. Then he said:
People of Ephesus, who in the world doesn't know that our city is the center for worshiping the great goddess Artemis? Who doesn't know that her image which fell from heaven is right here? 36 No one can deny this, and so you should calm down and not do anything foolish.

37 You have brought men in here who have not robbed temples or spoken against our goddess.
38 If Demetrius and his workers have a case against these men, we have courts and judges. Let them take their complaints there. 39 But if you want to do more than that, the matter will have to be brought before the city council.

40 We could easily be accused of starting a riot today. There is no excuse for it! We cannot even give a reason for this uproar.
41 After saying this, he told the people to leave.
