Pablo va a Éfeso

1 Mientras Apolo estaba en Corinto, Pablo cruzó la región montañosa y llegó a la ciudad de Éfeso. Allí encontró a algunos que habían creído en el Mesías,

2 y les preguntó:

—¿Recibieron el Espíritu Santo cuando creyeron?

Ellos contestaron:

—No. Ni siquiera sabemos nada acerca del Espíritu Santo.

3 Pablo les dijo:

—¿Por qué se bautizaron ustedes?

Ellos contestaron:

—Nos bautizamos por lo que Juan el Bautista nos enseñó.

4 Pablo les dijo:

—Juan bautizaba a la gente que le pedía perdón a Dios. Pero también le dijo a la gente que tenía que creer en Jesús, quien vendría después de él.

5 Cuando ellos oyeron eso, se bautizaron aceptando a Jesús como su Señor.

6-7 Pablo puso sus manos sobre la cabeza de esos doce hombres y, en ese momento, el Espíritu Santo vino sobre ellos. Entonces comenzaron a hablar en idiomas extraños y dieron mensajes de parte de Dios.
8 Durante tres meses, Pablo estuvo yendo a la sinagoga todos los sábados. Sin ningún temor hablaba a la gente acerca del reino de Dios, y trataba de convencerla para que creyera en Jesús.

9 Pero algunos judíos se pusieron tercos y no quisieron creer. Al contrario, comenzaron a decirle a la gente cosas terribles acerca de los seguidores de Jesús. Al ver esto, Pablo dejó de reunirse con ellos y, acompañado de los nuevos seguidores, comenzó a reunirse todos los días en la escuela de un hombre llamado Tirano.

10 Durante dos años, Pablo fue a ese lugar para hablar de Jesús. Fue así como muchos de los que vivían en toda la provincia de Asia escucharon el mensaje del Señor Jesús. Algunos de ellos eran judíos, y otros no lo eran.

Los hijos de Esceva

11 En la ciudad de Éfeso, Dios hizo grandes milagros por medio de Pablo.

12 La gente llevaba los pañuelos o la ropa que Pablo había tocado, y los ponía sobre los enfermos, y ellos se sanaban. También ponía pañuelos sobre los que tenían espíritus malos, y los espíritus salían de esas personas.

13 Allí, en Éfeso, andaban algunos judíos que usaban el nombre del Señor Jesús para expulsar de la gente los malos espíritus. Decían a los espíritus: «Por el poder de Jesús, de quien Pablo habla, les ordeno que salgan.»
14 Esto lo hacían los siete hijos de un sacerdote judío llamado Esceva.

15 Pero una vez, un espíritu malo les contestó: «Conozco a Jesús, y también conozco a Pablo, pero ustedes ¿quiénes son?»
16 Enseguida, el hombre que tenía el espíritu malo saltó sobre ellos y comenzó a golpearlos. De tal manera los maltrató, que tuvieron que huir del lugar completamente desnudos y lastimados.

17 Los que vivían en Éfeso, judíos y no judíos, se dieron cuenta de lo sucedido y tuvieron mucho miedo. Y por todos lados se respetaba el nombre del Señor Jesús.
18 Muchos de los que habían creído en Jesús le contaban a la gente todo lo malo que antes habían hecho.

19 Otros, que habían sido brujos, traían sus libros de brujería y los quemaban delante de la gente. Y el valor de los libros quemados era como de cincuenta mil monedas de plata.

20 El mensaje del Señor Jesús se anunciaba en más y más lugares, y cada vez más personas creían en él, porque veían el gran poder que tenía.

Alboroto en Éfeso

21 Después de todo eso, Pablo decidió ir a la ciudad de Jerusalén, pasando por las regiones de Macedonia y Acaya. Luego pensó ir de Jerusalén a la ciudad de Roma,

22 así que envió a Timoteo y a Erasto, que eran dos de sus ayudantes, a la región de Macedonia, mientras él se quedaba unos días más en Asia.
23 Por aquel tiempo, los seguidores de Jesús tuvieron un gran problema,24 provocado por un hombre llamado Demetrio. Este hombre se dedicaba a fabricar figuras de plata, y él y sus ayudantes ganaban mucho dinero haciendo la figura del templo de la diosa Artemisa.

25 Demetrio se reunió con sus ayudantes, y también con otros hombres que se dedicaban a hacer cosas parecidas, y les dijo:

«Amigos, ustedes saben cuánto necesitamos de este trabajo para vivir bien.26 Pero, según hemos visto y oído, este hombre llamado Pablo ha estado alborotando a la gente de Éfeso y de toda la provincia de Asia. Según él, los dioses que nosotros hacemos no son dioses de verdad, y mucha gente le ha creído.

27 Pablo no sólo está dañando nuestro negocio, sino que también le está quitando fama al templo de la gran diosa Artemisa. Hasta el momento, ella es amada y respetada en toda la provincia de Asia y en el mundo entero, pero muy pronto nadie va a querer saber nada de ella.»

28 Cuando aquellos hombres oyeron eso, se enojaron mucho y gritaron: «¡Viva Artemisa, la diosa de los efesios!»29 Entonces toda la gente de la ciudad se alborotó, y algunos fueron y apresaron a Gayo y a Aristarco, los dos compañeros de Pablo que habían venido de Macedonia, y los arrastraron hasta el teatro.30 Pablo quiso entrar para hablar con la gente, pero los seguidores de Jesús no se lo aconsejaron.

31 Además, algunos amigos de Pablo, autoridades del lugar, le mandaron a decir que no debía entrar.
32 Mientras tanto, en el teatro todo era confusión. La gente se puso a gritar, aunque algunos ni siquiera sabían para qué estaban allí.33 Varios de los líderes judíos empujaron a un hombre, llamado Alejandro, para que pasara al frente y viera lo que pasaba. Alejandro levantó la mano y pidió silencio para defender a los judíos.

34 Pero, cuando se dieron cuenta de que Alejandro también era judío, todos se pusieron a gritar durante casi dos horas: «¡Viva Artemisa, la diosa de los efesios!»

35 Finalmente, el secretario de la ciudad los hizo callar, y les dijo:

«Habitantes de Éfeso, nosotros somos los encargados de cuidar el templo de la gran diosa Artemisa y su estatua, la cual bajó del cielo.36 Esto lo sabemos todos muy bien, así que no hay razón para este alboroto. Cálmense y piensen bien las cosas.37 Estos hombres que ustedes han traído no han hecho nada en contra del templo de la diosa Artemisa, ni han hablado mal de ella.38 Si Demetrio y sus ayudantes tienen alguna queja en contra de ellos, que vayan ante los tribunales y hablen con los jueces. Allí cada uno podrá defenderse.39 Y si aún tuvieran alguna otra cosa de qué hablar, deberán tratar el asunto cuando las autoridades de la ciudad se reúnan.

40 No tenemos ningún motivo para causar todo este alboroto; más bien, se nos podría acusar ante los jueces de alborotar a la gente.»

Cuando el secretario terminó de hablar, les pidió a todos que se marcharan.

Acts 19

1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples:2 and he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they said unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was given.3 And he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John’s baptism.4 And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus.5 And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.7 And they were in all about twelve men.8 And he entered into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, reasoning and persuading as to the things concerning the kingdom of God.9 But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.10 And this continued for the space of two years; so that all they that dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:12 insomuch that unto the sick were carried away from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the evil spirits went out.13 But certain also of the strolling Jews, exorcists, took upon them to name over them that had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, who did this.15 And the evil spirit answered and said unto them, Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye?16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and mastered both of them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.17 And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.18 Many also of them that had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.19 And not a few of them that practised magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.20 So mightily grew the word of the Lord and prevailed.21 Now after these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.22 And having sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.23 And about that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no little business unto the craftsmen;25 whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this business we have our wealth.26 And ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands:27 and not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana be made of no account, and that she should even be deposed from her magnificence whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.28 And when they heard this they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesus.29 And the city was filled with the confusion: and they rushed with one accord into the theatre, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.30 And when Paul was minded to enter in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.31 And certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent unto him and besought him not to adventure himself into the theatre.32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was in confusion; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.33 And they brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made a defense unto the people.34 But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.35 And when the townclerk had quieted the multitude, he saith, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?36 Seeing then that these things cannot be gainsaid, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.37 For ye have brought hither these men, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.38 If therefore Demetrius, and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.39 But if ye seek anything about other matters, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.40 For indeed we are in danger to be accused concerning this day’s riot, there being no cause for it: and as touching it we shall not be able to give account of this concourse.41 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
