اَعمال 19

پَولُس اِفِسُس میں

1 اور جب اُپلّو س کُرِنتھُس میں تھا تو اَیسا ہُؤا کہ پَولُس اُوپر کے عِلاقہ سے گُذر کر اِفِسُس میں آیا اور کئی شاگِردوں کو دیکھ کر۔

2 اُن سے کہا کیا تُم نے اِیمان لاتے وقت رُوحُ القُدس پایا
اُنہوں نے اُس سے کہا کہ ہم نے تو سُنا بھی نہیں کہ رُوحُ القُدس نازِل ہُؤا ہے۔

3 اُس نے کہا پس تُم نے کِس کا بپتِسمہ لِیا؟
اُنہوں نے کہا یُوحنّا کا بپتِسمہ۔

4 پَولُس نے کہا یُوحنّا نے لوگوں کو یہ کہہ کر تَوبہ کا بپتِسمہ دِیا کہ جو میرے پِیچھے آنے والا ہے اُس پر یعنی یِسُوع پر اِیمان لانا۔
5 اُنہوں نے یہ سُن کر خُداوند یِسُوع کے نام کا بپتِسمہ لِیا۔ 6 جب پَولُس نے اُن پر ہاتھ رکھّے تو رُوحُ القُدس اُن پر نازِل ہُؤا اور وہ طرح طرح کی زُبانیں بولنے اور نبُوّت کرنے لگے۔

7 اور وہ سب تخمِیناً بارہ آدمی تھے۔
8 پِھر وہ عِبادت خانہ میں جا کر تِین مہِینے تک دِلیری سے بولتا اور خُدا کی بادشاہی کی بابت بحث کرتا اور لوگوں کو قائِل کرتا رہا۔ 9 لیکن جب بعض سخت دِل اور نافرمان ہو گئے بلکہ لوگوں کے سامنے اِس طرِیق کو بُرا کہنے لگے تو اُس نے اُن سے کنارہ کر کے شاگِردوں کو اَلگ کر لِیا اور ہر روز تُرنّس کے مدرسہ میں بحث کِیا کرتا تھا۔

10 دو برس تک یِہی ہوتا رہا ۔ یہاں تک کہ آسِیہ کے رہنے والوں کیا یہُودی کیا یُونانی سب نے خُداوند کا کلام سُنا۔

سِکِوا کے بیٹے

14 اور سِکِوا یہُودی سردار کاہِن کے سات بیٹے اَیسا کِیا کرتے تھے۔

15 بُری رُوح نے جواب میں اُن سے کہا کہ یِسُوع کو تو مَیں جانتی ہُوں اور پَولُس سے بھی واقِف ہُوں مگر تُم کَون ہو؟۔
16 اور وہ شخص جِس پر بُری رُوح تھی کُود کر اُن پر جا پڑا اور دونوں پر غالِب آ کر اَیسی زِیادتی کی کہ وہ ننگے اور زخمی ہو کر اُس گھر سے نِکل بھاگے۔ 17 اور یہ بات اِفِسُس کے سب رہنے والے یہُودِیوں اور یُونانِیوں کو معلُوم ہو گئی ۔ پس سب پر خَوف چھا گیا اور خُداوند یِسُوع کے نام کی بزُرگی ہُوئی۔ 18 اور جو اِیمان لائے تھے اُن میں سے بُہتیروں نے آ کر اپنے اپنے کاموں کا اِقرار اور اِظہار کِیا۔ 19 اور بُہت سے جادُوگروں نے اپنی اپنی کِتابیں اِکٹّھی کر کے سب لوگوں کے سامنے جلا دِیں اور جب اُن کی قِیمت کا حِساب ہُؤا تو پچاس ہزار رُوپَے کی نِکلِیں۔

20 اِسی طرح خُداوند کا کلام زور پکڑ کر پَھیلتا اور غالِب ہوتا گیا۔

اِفِسُس میں بَلوا

22 پس اپنے خِدمت گُذاروں میں سے دو شخص یعنی تِیمُتِھیُس اور اِراستُس کو مَکِدُنیہ میں بھیج کر آپ کُچھ عرصہ آسِیہ میں رہا۔
23 اُس وقت اِس طرِیق کی بابت بڑا فساد اُٹھا۔ 24 کیونکہ دیمیترِ یُس نام ایک سُنار تھا جو اَرتمِس کے رُوپَہلے مَندِر بنوا کر اُس پیشہ والوں کو بُہت کام دِلوا دیتا تھا۔ 25 اُس نے اُن کو اور اُن کے مُتعلِّق اَور پیشہ والوں کو جمع کر کے کہا اَے لوگو! تُم جانتے ہو کہ ہماری آسُودگی اِسی کام کی بدَولت ہے۔ 26 اور تُم دیکھتے اور سُنتے ہو کہ صِرف اِفِسُس ہی میں نہیں بلکہ تقرِیباً تمام آسِیہ میں اِس پَولُس نے بُہت سے لوگوں کو یہ کہہ کر قائِل اور گُمراہ کر دِیا ہے کہ جو ہاتھ کے بنائے ہُوئے ہیں وہ خُدا نہیں ہیں۔

27 پس صِرف یہی خطرہ نہیں کہ ہمارا پیشہ بے قدر ہو جائے گا بلکہ بڑی دیوی اَرتمِس کا مَندِر بھی ناچِیز ہو جائے گا اور جِسے تمام آسِیہ اور ساری دُنیا پُوجتی ہے خُود اُس کی بھی عظمت جاتی رہے گی۔
28 وہ یہ سُن کرقہرسے بھر گئے اور چِلاّ چِلاّ کر کہنے لگے کہ اِفِسِیو ں کی اَرتمِس بڑی ہے۔ 29 اور تمام شہر میں ہَلچَل پڑ گئی اور لوگوں نے گَیُس اور ارِستر خُس مَکِدُنیہ والوں کو جو پَولُس کے ہم سفر تھے پکڑ لِیا اور ایک دِل ہو کر تماشا گاہ کو دَوڑے۔ 30 جب پَولُس نے مجمع میں جانا چاہا تو شاگِردوں نے جانے نہ دِیا۔ 31 اور آسیہ کے حاکِموں میں سے اُس کے بعض دوستوں نے آدمی بھیج کر اُس کی مِنّت کی کہ تماشا گاہ میں جانے کی جُرأت نہ کرنا۔ 32 اور بعض کُچھ چِلاّئے اور بعض کُچھ کیونکہ مجلِس دَرہم بَرہم ہو گئی تھی اور اکثر لوگوں کو یہ بھی خبر نہ تھی کہ ہم کِس لِئے اِکٹّھے ہُوئے ہیں۔ 33 پِھر اُنہوں نے اِسکندر کو جِسے یہُودی پیش کرتے تھے بِھیڑ میں سے نِکال کر آگے کر دِیا اور اِسکندر نے ہاتھ سے اِشارہ کر کے مجمع کے سامنے عُذر بیان کرنا چاہا۔

34 جب اُنہیں معلُوم ہُؤا کہ یہ یہُودی ہے تو سب ہم آواز ہو کر کوئی دو گھنٹے تک چِلاّتے رہے کہ اِفِسِیوں کی اَرتمِس بڑی ہے۔
35 پِھر شہر کے مُحرِّر نے لوگوں کو ٹھنڈا کر کے کہا اَے اِفِسیِو!کَون سا آدمی نہیں جانتا کہ اِفِسیِوں کا شہر بڑی دیوی اَرتمِس کے مَندِر اور اُس مُورت کا مُحافِظ ہے جو زِیُو س کی طرف سے گِری تھی؟۔ 36 پس جب کوئی اِن باتوں کے خِلاف نہیں کہہ سکتا تو واجِب ہے کہ تُم اِطمِینان سے رہو اور بے سوچے کُچھ نہ کرو۔ 37 کیونکہ یہ لوگ جِن کو تُم یہاں لائے ہو نہ مَندر کو لُوٹنے والے ہیں نہ ہماری دیوی کی بدگوئی کرنے والے۔ 38 پس اگر دیمیترِ یُس اور اُس کے ہم پیشہ کِسی پر دعویٰ رکھتے ہوں تو عدالت کُھلی ہے اور صُوبہ دار مَوجُود ہیں ۔ ایک دُوسرے پر نالِش کریں۔ 39 اور اگر تُم کِسی اَور اَمر کی تحقِیقات چاہتے ہو تو باضابطہ مجلِس میں فَیصلہ ہو گا۔ 40 کیونکہ آج کے بَلوے کے سبب سے ہمیں اپنے اُوپر نالِش ہونے کا اندیشہ ہے اِس لِئے کہ اِس کی کوئی وجہ نہیں ہے اور اِس صُورت میں ہم اِس ہنگامہ کی جواب دِہی نہ کر سکیں گے۔ 41 یہ کہہ کر اُس نے مجلِس کو برخاست کِیا۔

ACTS 19

Paul in Ephesus

1 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled across the hill country to Ephesus, where he met some of the Lord's followers.

2 He asked them, “When you put your faith in Jesus, were you given the Holy Spirit?”
“No!” they answered. “We have never even heard of the Holy Spirit.”

3 “Then why were you baptized?” Paul asked.
They answered, “Because of what John taught.”t
4  t Paul replied, “John baptized people so they would turn to God. But he also told them someone else was coming, and they should put their faith in him. Jesus is the one that John was talking about.” 5 After the people heard Paul say this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 Then Paul placed his hands on them. The Holy Spirit was given to them, and they spoke unknown languages and prophesied.

7 There were about twelve men in this group.
8 For three months Paul went to the synagogue and talked bravely with the people about God's kingdom. He tried to win them over, 9 but some of them were stubborn and refused to believe. In front of everyone they said terrible things about God's Way. Paul left and took the followers with him to the lecture hall of Tyrannus. He spoke there every day

10 for two years, until every Jew and Gentilet in Asia had heard the Lord's message.

The Sons of Sceva

12 People even took handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched Paul's body, and they carried them to everyone who was sick. All of the sick people were healed, and the evil spirits went out.

13 Some Jewish men started going around trying to force out evil spirits by using the name of the Lord Jesus. They said to the spirits, “Come out in the name of that same Jesus that Paul preaches about!”
14 Seven sons of a high priest named Sceva were doing this, 15 when an evil spirit said to them, “I know Jesus! And I have heard about Paul. But who are you?”

16 Then the man with the evil spirit jumped on them and beat them up. They ran out of the house, naked and bruised.
17 When the Jews and Gentilest in Ephesus heard about this, they were so frightened that they praised the name of the Lord Jesus. 18 Many who were followers now started telling everyone about the evil things they had been doing. 19 Some who had been practicing witchcraft even brought their books and burned them in public. These books were worth about 50,000 silver coins.

20 So the Lord's message spread and became even more powerful.

The Riot in Ephesus

22 So he sent his two helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia. But he stayed on in Asia for a while.
23 At that time there was serious trouble because of the Lord's Way.t 24 A silversmith named Demetrius had a business that made silver models of the temple of the goddess Artemis. Those who worked for him earned a lot of money.

25 Demetrius brought together everyone who was in the same business and said:
Friends, you know we make a good living at this. 26 But you have surely seen and heard how this man Paul is upsetting a lot of people, not only in Ephesus, but almost everywhere in Asia. He claims that the gods we humans make are not really gods at all.

27 Everyone will start saying terrible things about our business. They will stop respecting the temple of the goddess Artemis, who is worshiped in Asia and all over the world. Our great goddess will be forgotten!
28 When the workers heard this, they got angry and started shouting, “Great is Artemis, the goddess of the Ephesians!”

29 Soon the whole city was in a riot, and some men grabbed Gaius and Aristarchus, who had come from Macedonia with Paul. Then everyone in the crowd rushed to the place where the town meetings were held.
30 Paul wanted to go out and speak to the people, but the Lord's followers would not let him.

31 A few of the local officials were friendly to Paul, and they sent someone to warn him not to go.

32 Some of the people in the meeting were shouting one thing, and others were shouting something else. Everyone was completely confused, and most of them did not even know why they were there.
33 Several of the Jewish leaders pushed a man named Alexander to the front of the crowd and started telling him what to say. He motioned with his hand and tried to explain what was going on.

34 But when the crowd saw that he was Jewish, they all shouted for two hours, “Great is Artemis, the goddess of the Ephesians!”

35 Finally, a town official made the crowd be quiet. Then he said:
People of Ephesus, who in the world doesn't know that our city is the center for worshiping the great goddess Artemis? Who doesn't know that her image which fell from heaven is right here? 36 No one can deny this, and so you should calm down and not do anything foolish.

37 You have brought men in here who have not robbed temples or spoken against our goddess.
38 If Demetrius and his workers have a case against these men, we have courts and judges. Let them take their complaints there. 39 But if you want to do more than that, the matter will have to be brought before the city council.

40 We could easily be accused of starting a riot today. There is no excuse for it! We cannot even give a reason for this uproar.
41 After saying this, he told the people to leave.
