Pablo en Éfeso

1 Mientras Apolos estaba en la ciudad de Corinto, Pablo visitó algunos lugares camino a la ciudad de Éfeso. Allí Pablo encontró a algunos seguidores del Señor

2 y les preguntó:
—Cuando ustedes creyeron, ¿recibieron el Espíritu Santo?
Los seguidores le dijeron:
—Nosotros ni siquiera hemos escuchado que hay un Espíritu Santo.

3 Pablo les preguntó:
—¿Qué clase de bautismot tuvieron ustedes?
Ellos le dijeron:
—El bautismo que Juan enseñó.

4 Pablo les dijo:
—Juan le dijo a la gente que se bautizara para demostrar que ellos querían cambiar su vida. Les dijo que creyeran en Jesús, el que vendría después de él.
5 Al escuchar eso fueron bautizados en el nombre del Señor Jesús.6 Cuando Pablo les impuso las manost, el Espíritu Santo llegó a ellos. Empezaron a hablar en lenguas y a decir profecías.

7 Eran como doce hombres en total.
8 Durante tres meses, Pablo fue a la sinagogat y habló con valentía, discutiendo y tratando de convencerlos de lo que él estaba diciendo acerca del reino de Diost.9 Sin embargo, algunos fueron tercos y no quisieron creer, y le hablaron mal del Caminot a toda la gente. Entonces Pablo los dejó y se fue con los seguidores de Jesús a una escuela de un hombre llamado Tirano. Allí Pablo todos los días mantenía un diálogo con la gente.

10 Así continuó durante dos años, de manera que todos los de la región de Asiat, judíos o griegost, escucharon el mensaje del Señor.
11 Dios hacía grandes milagros por medio de Pablo.

12 Por ejemplo, algunos se llevaban paños y ropa que Pablo había usado para ponerlos sobre los enfermos y al hacerlo, sanaban y los espíritus malignos salían de ellos.
13 Pero unos judíos que andaban por ahí expulsando espíritus malignos, trataron de usar el nombre del Señor Jesús para expulsarlos. Les decían a los espíritus: «Por el mismo Jesús, el que anuncia Pablo, les ordenamos que salgan de ahí».14 Ellos eran los siete hijos de Esceva, un sumo sacerdotet.

15 Pero una vez un espíritu maligno les dijo: «Yo conozco a Jesús y sé quién es Pablo, pero ¿quiénes son ustedes?»
16 Luego, el hombre que tenía el espíritu maligno les cayó encima y los atacó con tanta violencia que salieron corriendo de la casa, desnudos y heridos.

17 Esto se supo entre todos los judíos y griegos que vivían en Éfeso. A todos les dio miedo y empezaron a honrar el nombre del Señor Jesús.
18 Muchos de los creyentes confesaban abiertamente las maldades que habían hecho.19 Algunos de los nuevos creyentes que habían practicado la brujería trajeron sus libros y los quemaron delante de todos. Esos libros tenían un valor de cincuenta mil monedas de platat.

20 El mensaje del Señor tenía cada vez más influencia y más gente creía.
21 Después de esto, Pablo decidió ir a Jerusalén. Planeó pasar por las regiones de Macedoniat y Acayat y luego llegar a Jerusalén.t También pensaba que después de ir allá, debería ir a Roma.

22 Así que envió a Timoteo y a Erasto, dos de sus ayudantes, a la región de Macedonia y él se quedó en Asiat por un tiempo.

Problemas en Éfeso

23 Pero en ese tiempo hubo un gran disturbio por causa del Camino.24 Había un hombre llamado Demetrio que trabajaba la plata. Él hacía en plata pequeños modelos del templo de la diosa Artemisat y daba buenas ganancias a los artesanos que trabajaban con él.25 Demetrio organizó una reunión con ellos y otros más que trabajaban en el mismo oficio. Les dijo: «Ustedes saben que nosotros ganamos mucho dinero con nuestro trabajo,26 pero como pueden ver y oír, ese tal Pablo ha hecho cambiar la manera de pensar de muchos en Éfeso y en toda la región de Asiat. Pablo dice que los dioses que el hombre hace no son verdaderos.

27 Eso no sólo puede quitarle importancia a nuestro trabajo, sino también hacer que se acabe la fama del templo de la gran diosa Artemisa. Se corre peligro de que se destruya la grandeza de la diosa que se adora en toda Asia y en el mundo entero».
28 Al oír esto, se pusieron furiosos y gritaban: «¡Viva Artemisa, diosa de los efesios!»29 La ciudad se llenó de confusión. Agarraron a Gayo y a Aristarco, dos hombres de Macedonia que iban con Pablo, y todos fueron corriendo al teatro.30 Pablo quería entrar para hablar con la gente, pero los seguidores no lo dejaron.

31 También algunos de los líderes de la región que eran amigos de Pablo le mandaron el mensaje de que no entrara al teatro.
32 Algunos gritaban una cosa y otros otra. Había mucha confusión y la mayoría de la gente no sabía a qué había ido allí.33 Los judíos obligaron a Alejandro a colocarse en frente de la gente, entonces él con una señal de su mano pidió silencio porque quería explicarle todo a la gente,

34 pero cuando supieron que era judío, todos empezaron a gritar lo mismo por dos horas más, diciendo: «¡Viva Artemisa, diosa de los efesios!»
35 Cuando el secretario del concejo municipal pudo calmar a la gente, dijo: «Ciudadanos de Éfeso, todos saben que Éfeso es la ciudad que custodia el gran templo de la diosa Artemisa. Todos saben también que nosotros custodiamos su piedra santat.36 Nadie puede decir que eso no es verdad, así que deberían callarse y pensar bien antes de hacer cualquier cosa.37 Ustedes trajeron a estos hombres, pero ellos no han dicho nada en contra de nuestra diosa ni se han robado nada de su templo.38 Nosotros tenemos tribunales y jueces, así que si Demetrio y los que trabajan con él tienen alguna acusación en contra de alguien, entonces deben ir a demandarlo al tribunal.39 Si tienen algún otro asunto qué discutir, entonces vengan a las reuniones normales de los ciudadanos, donde se podrá tomar una decisión.40 Con lo que ha pasado hoy, corremos el peligro de ser acusados de estar fomentando revueltas, ya que no tenemos ninguna explicación para justificar este alboroto».

41 Después de decir esto, hizo terminar la reunión y todos se dispersaron.

Acts 19

Paul at Ephesus

1 It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples.2 He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said to him, "No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit."3 And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into John's baptism."4 Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus."5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.7 There were in all about twelve men.

8 And he entered the synagogue and continued speaking out boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God.9 But when some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the people, he withdrew from them and took away the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.10 This took place for two years, so that all who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

Miracles at Ephesus

11 God was performing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,12 so that handkerchiefs or aprons were even carried from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out.13 But also some of the Jewish exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to name over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, "I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches."14 Seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.15 And the evil spirit answered and said to them, "I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?"16 And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.17 This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified.18 Many also of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices.19 And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and began burning them in the sight of everyone; and they counted up the price of them and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.20 So the word of the Lord was growing mightily and prevailing.

21 Now after these things were finished, Paul purposed in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem after he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome."22 And having sent into Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

23 About that time there occurred no small disturbance concerning the Way.24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing no little business to the craftsmen;25 these he gathered together with the workmen of similar trades, and said, "Men, you know that our prosperity depends upon this business.26 You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made with hands are no gods at all. 27 Not only is there danger that this trade of ours fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis be regarded as worthless and that she whom all of Asia and the world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence."

28 When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began crying out, saying, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"29 The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia.30 And when Paul wanted to go into the assembly, the disciples would not let him.31 Also some of the tAsiarchs who were friends of his sent to him and repeatedly urged him not to venture into the theater.32 So then, some were shouting one thing and some another, for the assembly was in confusion and the majority did not know for what reason they had come together.33 Some of the crowd concluded it was Alexander, since the Jews had put him forward; and having motioned with his hand, Alexander was intending to make a defense to the assembly.34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a single outcry arose from them all as they shouted for about two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"35 After quieting the crowd, the town clerk *said, "Men of Ephesus, what man is there after all who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of the image which fell down from heaven?36 So, since these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and to do nothing rash.37 For you have brought these men here who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.38 So then, if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint against any man, the courts are in session and proconsuls are available; let them bring charges against one another.39 But if you want anything beyond this, it shall be settled in the lawful assembly.40 For indeed we are in danger of being accused of a riot in connection with today's events, since there is no real cause for it, and in this connection we will be unable to account for this disorderly gathering."41 After saying this he dismissed the assembly.
