Az efezusi tanítványokra is leszáll a Szent Szellem

1 Amíg Apollós Korinthusban volt, Pál más városokat látogatott meg, majd Efezusba érkezett. Itt találkozott Jézus néhány tanítványával.

2 Megkérdezte tőlük: „Megkaptátok-e a Szent Szellemet, amikor hívők lettetek?”
De ők így válaszoltak: „Nem is hallottunk a Szent Szellemről!”

3 Ekkor Pál megkérdezte: „Hát akkor hogyan merítettek be titeket?”
Mire ők azt mondták: „Úgy, ahogyan János tanította a bemerítkezést.”

4 „János azért merítette be az embereket, hogy ezzel fejezzék ki, hogy meg akarják változtatni gondolkodásukat és egész életüket. De azt is mondta nekik, hogy higgyenek abban, aki majd utána fog jönni, vagyis Jézusban” - mondta nekik Pál.

5 Amikor a tanítványok ezt meghallották, bemerítkeztek az Úr Jézus nevébe.

6 Amikor Pál rájuk tette a kezét,t a Szent Szellem leszállt a tanítványokra, akik kezdtek nyelveken szólni és prófétálni.

7 Ez a tanítvány-csoport tizenkét férfiból állt.

8 Pál ezután elment a zsinagógába. Ott bátran beszélt a zsidóknak Isten királyi uralmáról. Sokat vitatkozott velük három hónapon keresztül, és próbálta meggyőzni őket.

9-10 Közülük néhányan makacsul ellenkeztek Pállal, és nem akartak hinni. Sőt, mindenkinek rossz dolgokat mondtak Isten útjáról.

Pál és az efezusi tanítványok

11 Isten különleges csodákat tett Pálon keresztül.

12 Az emberek elvitték a betegekhez a zsebkendőket és ruhákat, amelyeket Pál viselt, a betegek pedig meggyógyultak, és a gonosz szellemek kimentek belőlük.

Jézust a gonosz szellemek is ismerik

13 Arra járt néhány zsidó, akik azzal foglalkoztak, hogy a gonosz szellemeket kiűzzék az emberekből. Megpróbálták az Úr Jézus nevét erre a célra használni. Azt mondták a gonosz szellemeknek: „Annak a Jézusnak a nevében parancsolunk nektek, akiről Pál beszél!”

14 Ezt tette a zsidó főpap, Szkéva hét fia is.

15 De egyszer a gonosz szellem így beszélt vissza ezeknek a zsidóknak: „Jézust ismerem, Pálról is hallottam, de kik vagytok ti?!”

16 Akkor az az ember, akiben a gonosz szellem volt, rájuk ugrott, megverte őket, és még a ruhát is letépte róluk. Erősebb volt, mint ők együttesen, annyira, hogy azok meztelenül és sebesülten rohantak ki a házból.

17 Ezt mindenki megtudta, aki csak Efezusban lakott, zsidók és görögök egyaránt. Félelem fogta el őket, és még jobban tisztelték az Úr Jézus nevét.

18 A hívők közül sokan bevallották gonosz tetteiket a többiek előtt.

19 Voltak olyan hívők, akik korábban varázsoltak. Ezek közül sokan összegyűjtötték a varázsláshoz használt könyveiket, és a többiek szeme láttára elégették őket. Az így elégetett könyvek összesen körülbelül ötvenezer ezüstpénzt értek.

20 Ezért azután Isten üzenete egyre erősebben terjedt, és egyre többen hittek Jézusban.

21 Ezek után Pál elhatározta, hogy felmegy Jeruzsálembe. Az volt a terve, hogy keresztülutazik Macedónián és Akháján. Ezt gondolta: „Jeruzsálem után Rómába is el kell mennem.”

22 Ezért két segítőtársát, Timóteust és Erásztoszt előreküldte Macedóniába, ő maga pedig egy ideig még Ázsiában maradt.

Zűrzavar Efezusban

23 Ekkor történt, hogy nagy zűrzavar támadt Efezusban az Úr Útja miatt.

24 Volt a városban egy Demeter nevű ötvösmester. Azzal foglalkozott, hogy Artemisz istennő templománakt kicsinyített másolatát készítette ezüstből. A műhelyében dolgozó munkások ezért jó fizetést kaptak.

25 Demeter összegyűjtötte ezeket a munkásokat és a többi hasonló iparost. Azt mondta nekik: „Tudjátok, milyen sok pénzt keresünk ezzel a mesterséggel.

26 Ugyanakkor ti magatok is látjátok, mit művel ez a Pál, és halljátok, mit mond! És mennyi embert meggyőzött már, de nem csak Efezusban, hanem szinte egész Ázsiában. Azt mondja, hogy a kézzel készített istenek valójában nem is istenek.

27 Ez nagyon veszélyes! Rossz híre lesz a munkánknak. Sőt, a mi nagy istennőnket, Artemiszt és a templomát is semmibe veszik. Pedig Artemiszt egész Ázsia, sőt az egész világ istennőként tiszteli!”

28 Ekkor az összegyűltek nagyon dühösek lettek, és így kiáltoztak: „Nagy az Efezusi Artemisz!”

29 Az egész városban zűrzavar támadt. Elfogták Gájuszt és Arisztarkhoszt, akik Macedóniából jöttek, és Pál útitársai voltak. Erőszakkal elvitték őket a stadionba, ahol nagyon sokan összegyűltek.

30 Pál is oda akart menni, hogy szóljon a tömeghez, de a tanítványok nem engedték.

31 Pálnak volt néhány barátja a város vezetői között. Ezek is azt üzenték neki, hogy ne menjen a stadionba.

32 Közben a stadionban összegyűlt tömeg már mindenfélét kiabált. Az egész gyűlés összezavarodott, sőt a legtöbben azt sem tudták, miért jöttek ide.

33 A zsidók kiválasztották Sándort, és előre állították, hogy beszéljen. Sándor intett a kezével, és beszédet akart mondani.

34 De mikor az emberek megtudták, hogy zsidó, még jobban kiabáltak. Mindenki kórusban ordította: „Nagy az efezusi Artemisz! Nagy az efezusi Artemisz! …” Ez körülbelül két óra hosszat tartott.

35 Végre a város egyik vezetője lecsendesítette a kiabáló sokaságot. Ezt mondta: „Efezusiak! Van-e valaki széles e világon, aki ne tudná, hogy Efezus városa őrzi a nagy Artemisz istennő templomát, és az égből hullott szent követt?!

36 Mivel mindez nyilvánvaló, csillapodjatok le, és ne okozzatok semmi bajt!

37 Mert idehoztátok ezeket az emberekett, holott nem loptak semmit a templomból, és nem mondtak rosszat istennőnkre.

38 Ha Demeternek és a többi mesterembernek panaszuk van valaki ellen, akkor menjenek a bíróságra. Ott mondják el, mivel vádolják egymást.

39 Ha bármi más dolgot akartok elintézni, akkor azt meg a szokásos népgyűlésen kell megbeszélni.

40 Attól félek, hogy azért, ami ma történt, még lázadással is vádolhatnak bennünket. Hiszen nem tudjuk megmondani, miért okoztunk ekkora zűrzavart.”

41 Ezzel hazaküldte a tömeget.

Acts 19

Paul at Ephesus

1 It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples.2 He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said to him, "No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit."3 And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into John's baptism."4 Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus."5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.7 There were in all about twelve men.

8 And he entered the synagogue and continued speaking out boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God.9 But when some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the people, he withdrew from them and took away the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.10 This took place for two years, so that all who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

Miracles at Ephesus

11 God was performing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,12 so that handkerchiefs or aprons were even carried from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out.13 But also some of the Jewish exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to name over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, "I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches."14 Seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.15 And the evil spirit answered and said to them, "I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?"16 And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.17 This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified.18 Many also of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices.19 And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and began burning them in the sight of everyone; and they counted up the price of them and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.20 So the word of the Lord was growing mightily and prevailing.

21 Now after these things were finished, Paul purposed in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem after he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome."22 And having sent into Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

23 About that time there occurred no small disturbance concerning the Way.24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing no little business to the craftsmen;25 these he gathered together with the workmen of similar trades, and said, "Men, you know that our prosperity depends upon this business.26 You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made with hands are no gods at all. 27 Not only is there danger that this trade of ours fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis be regarded as worthless and that she whom all of Asia and the world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence."

28 When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began crying out, saying, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"29 The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia.30 And when Paul wanted to go into the assembly, the disciples would not let him.31 Also some of the tAsiarchs who were friends of his sent to him and repeatedly urged him not to venture into the theater.32 So then, some were shouting one thing and some another, for the assembly was in confusion and the majority did not know for what reason they had come together.33 Some of the crowd concluded it was Alexander, since the Jews had put him forward; and having motioned with his hand, Alexander was intending to make a defense to the assembly.34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a single outcry arose from them all as they shouted for about two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"35 After quieting the crowd, the town clerk *said, "Men of Ephesus, what man is there after all who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of the image which fell down from heaven?36 So, since these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and to do nothing rash.37 For you have brought these men here who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.38 So then, if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint against any man, the courts are in session and proconsuls are available; let them bring charges against one another.39 But if you want anything beyond this, it shall be settled in the lawful assembly.40 For indeed we are in danger of being accused of a riot in connection with today's events, since there is no real cause for it, and in this connection we will be unable to account for this disorderly gathering."41 After saying this he dismissed the assembly.
