La discesa dello Spirito Santo

1 E COME il giorno della Pentecosta fu giuntot, tutti erano insieme di pari consentimentot. 2 E di subito si fece dal cielo un suono, come di vento impetuoso che soffia, ed esso riempiè tutta la casat, dove essi sedevano. 3 Ed apparvero loro delle lingue spartite, come di fuocot; e ciascuna d'esse si posò sopra ciascun di loro.

4 E tutti furono ripieni dello Spirito Santot, e cominciarono a parlar lingue stranieret, secondo che lo Spirito dava loro a ragionare.
5 Or in Gerusalemme dimoravano dei Giudei, uomini religiosit, d'ogni nazione di sotto il cielo. 6 Ora, essendosi fatto quel suono, la moltitudine si radunò, e fu confusa; perciocchè ciascun di loro li udiva parlar nel suo proprio linguaggio. 7 E tutti stupivano, e si maravigliavano, dicendo gli uni agli altri: Ecco, tutti costoro che parlano non son eglino Galilei? 8 Come adunque li udiam noi parlare ciascuno nel nostro proprio natio linguaggio? 9 Noi Parti, e Medi, ed Elamiti, e quelli che abitiamo in Mesopotamia, in Giudea, ed in Cappadocia, in Ponto, e nell'Asia; 10 nella Frigia, e nella Panfilia; nell'Egitto, e nelle parti della Libia ch' è di rincontro a Cirene; e noi avveniticci Romani; 11 e Giudei, e proseliti; Cretesi, ed Arabi; li udiamo ragionar le cose grandi di Dio ne'~nostri linguaggi. 12 E tutti stupivano, e ne stavan sospesi, dicendo l'uno all'altro: Che vuol esser questo?

13 Ma altri, cavillando, dicevano: Son pieni di vin dolce.

Discorso di Pietro il dì della Pentecosta

14 MA Pietro, levatosi in piè, con gli undici, alzò la sua voce, e ragionò loro, dicendo:
Uomini Giudei, e voi tutti che abitate in Gerusalemme, siavi noto questo, e ricevete le mie parole ne'~vostri orecchi. 15 Perciocchè costoro non son ebbri, come voi stimate, poichè non sono più che le tre ore del giornot. 16 Ma quest'è quello che fu detto dal profeta Gioelet: 17 Ed avverrà negli ultimi giorni, dice Iddio, che io spanderò del mio Spirito sopra ogni carnet; e i vostri figliuoli, e le vostre figliuole profetizzeranno; e i vostri giovani vedranno delle visioni, e i vostri vecchi sogneranno de'~sogni. 18 E in quei giorni io spanderò dello Spirito mio sopra i miei servitori, e sopra le mie serventi; e profetizzerannot. 19 E farò prodigi di sopra nel cielo, e segni di sotto in terra, sangue, e fuoco, e vapor di fumo. 20 Il sole sarà mutato in tenebre, e la luna in sanguet; innanzi che quel grande ed illustre giorno del Signore venga.

21 Ed avverrà, che chiunque avrà invocato il nome del Signore sarà salvot.
22 Uomini Israeliti, udite queste parole: Gesù il Nazareo, uomo di cui Iddio vi ha date delle prove certe con potenti operazioni, e prodigi, e segni, i quali Iddio fece per lui fra voi, come ancora voi sapetet; 23 esso, dico, per lo determinato consiglio, e la provvidenza di Diot, vi fu dato nelle mani, e voi lo pigliaste, e per mani d'iniqui lo conficcaste in croce, e l'uccidestet. 24 Il quale Iddio ha suscitato, avendo sciolte le doglie della mortet; poichè non era possibile ch'egli fosse da essa ritenuto. 25 Perciocchè Davide dice di luit: Io ho avuto del continuo il Signore davanti agli occhi; perciocchè egli è alla mia destra, acciocchè io non sia smosso. 26 Perciò si è rallegrato il cuor mio, ed ha giubilato la lingua mia, ed anche la mia carne abiterà in isperanza. 27 Perciocchè tu non lascerai l'anima mia ne'~luoghi sotterra, e non permetterai che il tuo Santo vegga corruzione.

28 Tu mi hai fatte conoscer le vie della vita, tu mi riempirai di letizia colla tua presenza.
29 Uomini fratelli, ben può liberamente dirvisi intorno al patriarca Davide, che egli è morto, ed è stato seppellito; e il suo monumento è presso noi infino a questo giorno. 30 Egli adunque, essendo profeta, e sapendo che Iddio gli avea con giuramento promesso, che del frutto dei suoi lombi, secondo la carne, susciterebbe il Cristo, per farlo seder sopra il suo tronot; 31 antivedendo le cose avvenire, parlò della risurrezion di Cristo, dicendo che l'anima sua non è stata lasciata ne'~luoghi sotterra, e che la sua carne non ha veduta corruzionet. 32 Esso Gesù ha Iddio suscitatot, di che noi tutti siam testimoni. 33 Egli adunque, essendo stato innalzato dalla destra di Diot, ed avendo ricevuta dal Padre la promessa dello Spirito Santot, ha sparso quello che ora voi vedete, ed uditet. 34 Poichè Davide non è salito in cielo; anzi egli stesso dice: Il Signore ha detto al mio Signore:

35 Siedi alla mia destra, finchè io abbia posti i tuoi nemici per iscannello de'~tuoi piedit.

36 Sappia adunque sicuramente tutta la casa d'Israele, che quel Gesù, che voi avete crocifisso, Iddio l'ha fatto Signore, e Cristot.

I primi convertiti

37 OR essi, avendo udite queste cose, furon compunti nel cuore, e dissero a Pietro, ed agli altri apostoli: Fratelli, che dobbiam faret?
38 E Pietro disse loro: Ravvedetevit, e ciascun di voi sia battezzatot nel nome di Gesù Cristo, in remission de'~peccati; e voi riceverete il dono dello Spirito Santot. 39 Perciocchè a voi è fatta la promessa, ed a'~vostri figliuolit, ed a coloro che verranno per molto tempo appresso; a quanti il Signore Iddio nostro ne chiameràt.

40 E con molte parole protestava loro, e li confortava, dicendo: Salvatevi da questa perversa generazione.

41 Coloro adunque, i quali volonterosamente ricevettero la sua parola, furono battezzati; e in quel giorno furono aggiunte intorno a tremila personet.
42 Or erano perseveranti nella dottrina degli apostoli, e nella comunione, e nel rompere il panet, e nelle orazionit. 43 Ed ogni persona avea timore; e molti segni e miracoli si facevano dagli apostolit. 44 E tutti coloro che credevano erano insieme, ed aveano ogni cosa comunet; 45 e vendevano le possessioni, ed i beni; e li distribuivano a tutti, secondo che ciascuno ne avea bisognot. 46 E perseveravano di pari consentimentot ad esser tutti i giorni nel tempio; e rompendo il pane di casa in casa, prendevano il cibo insieme, con letizia, e semplicità di cuore, 47 lodando Iddio, ed avendo grazia presso tutto il popolot. E il Signore aggiungeva alla chiesa ogni giorno coloro che erano salvatit.

Acts 2

The Holy Spirit and the Day of Pentecost

1 Nowt when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.2 Suddenlyt a soundt like a violent wind blowingt came from heavent and filled the entire house where they were sitting.3 And tongues spreading out like a firet appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them.

4 Allt of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languagests as the Spirit enabled them.t
5 Now there were devout Jewst from every nation under heaven residing in Jerusalem.ts6 When this soundt occurred, a crowd gathered and was in confusion,t because each one heard them speaking in his own language.7 Completely baffled, they said,t “Aren’tt all these who are speaking Galileans?8 And how is it that each one of us hears themt in our own native language?t9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and the province of Asia,t10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene,t and visitors from Rome,s11 both Jews and proselytes,s Cretans and Arabs – we hear them speaking in our own languages about the great deeds God has done!”t12 All were astounded and greatly confused, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

13 But others jeered at the speakers,t saying, “They are drunk on new wine!”ts

Peter’s Address on the Day of Pentecost

14 But Peter stood upt with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them: “You men of Judeat and all you who live in Jerusalem,s know thist and listen carefully to what I say.15 In spite of what you think, these men are not drunk,t for it is only nine o’clock in the morning.t

16 But this is what was spoken about through the prophet Joel:s

17 ‘And in the last dayssit will be,’ God says,
‘that I will pour out my Spirit on all people,t
and your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
and your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.

18 Even on my servants,tboth men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.s

19 And I will perform wonders in the skytabove
and miraculous signston the earth below,
blood and fire and clouds of smoke.

20 The sun will be changed to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the great and glorioustday of the Lord comes.

21 And thenteveryone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’s
22 “Men of Israel,t listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man clearly attested to you by God with powerful deeds,t wonders, and miraculous signst that God performed among you through him, just as you yourselves know –23 this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executedt by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles.t24 But God raised him up,t having releasedt him from the painss of death, because it was not possible for him to be held in its power.t

25 For David says about him,
‘I saw the Lord always in front of me,t
for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken.

26 Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced;
my bodytalso will live in hope,

27 because you will not leave my soul in Hades,t
nor permit your Holy One to experiencetdecay.

28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will make me full of joy with your presence.’s
29 “Brothers,t I can speak confidentlys to you about our forefathert David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.30 So then, becauset he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendantston his throne,s31 David by foreseeing thist spoke about the resurrection of the Christ,ts that he was neither abandoned to Hades,t nor did his bodytexperiencetdecay.s32 This Jesus God raised up, and we are all witnesses of it.t33 So then, exaltedt to the right hands of God, and having receivedt the promise of the Holy Spiritt from the Father, he has poured outs what you both see and hear.

34 For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says,
‘The Lord said to my lord,
“Sitsat my right hand

35 until I make your enemies a footstoolsfor your feet.”’s

36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know beyond a doubtt that God has made this Jesus whom you crucifiedt both Lords and Christ.”ts

The Response to Peter’s Address

37 Now when they heard this,t they were acutely distressedt and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “What should we do, brothers?”38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each one of you be baptizedt in the name of Jesus Christts fort the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.t39 For the promises is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to himself.”40 With many other words he testifiedt and exhorted them saying, “Save yourselves from this perverset generation!”

41 So those who acceptedt his messaget were baptized, and that day about three thousand peoplet were added.t

The Fellowship of the Early Believers

42 They were devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship,s to the breaking of bread and to prayer.t43 Reverential awet came over everyone,t and many wonders and miraculous signst came about by the apostles.44 All who believed were together and heldt everything in common,45 and they began sellingt their propertyt and possessions and distributing the proceedst to everyone, as anyone had need.46 Every dayt they continued to gather together by common consent in the temple courts,t breaking bread fromt house to house, sharing their food with glads and humble hearts,t

47 praising God and having the good willt of all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number every dayt those who were being saved.
