La llegada del Espíritu Santo

1 Cuando llegó el día de Pentecostés,t todos ellos estaban juntos y en el mismo lugar.2 De repente, un estruendo como de un fuerte viento vino del cielo, y sopló y llenó toda la casa donde se encontraban.3 Entonces aparecieron unas lenguas como de fuego, que se repartieron y fueron a posarse sobre cada uno de ellos.4 Todos ellos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo, y comenzaron a hablar en otras lenguas, según el Espíritu los llevaba a expresarse.

5 En aquel tiempo vivían en Jerusalén judíos piadosos, que venían de todas las naciones conocidas.6 Al escucharse aquel estruendo, la multitud se juntó, y se veían confundidos porque los oían hablar en su propia lengua.7 Estaban atónitos y maravillados, y decían: «Fíjense: ¿acaso no son galileos todos estos que están hablando?8 ¿Cómo es que los oímos hablar en nuestra lengua materna?9 Aquí hay partos, medos, elamitas, y los que habitamos en Mesopotamia, Judea, Capadocia, el Ponto y Asia.10 Están los de Frigia y Panfilia, los de Egipto y los de las regiones de África que están más allá de Cirene. También están los romanos que viven aquí, tanto judíos como prosélitos,11 y cretenses y árabes, ¡y todos los escuchamos hablar en nuestra lengua acerca de las maravillas de Dios!»12 Todos ellos estaban atónitos y perplejos, y se decían unos a otros: «¿Y esto qué significa?»13 Pero otros se burlaban, y decían: «¡Están borrachos!»

Primer discurso de Pedro

14 Entonces Pedro se puso de pie, junto con los otros once, y con potente voz dijo: «Varones judíos, y ustedes, habitantes todos de Jerusalén, sepan esto, y entiendan bien mis palabras.15 Contra lo que ustedes suponen, estos hombres no están borrachos, pues apenas son las nueve de la mañana.16 Más bien, esto es lo que dijo el profeta Joel:
17 »Dios ha dicho:
En los últimos días derramaré de mi Espíritu
sobre toda la humanidad.
Los hijos y las hijas de ustedes profetizarán;
sus jóvenes tendrán visiones
y sus ancianos tendrán sueños.
18 En esos días derramaré de mi Espíritu
sobre mis siervos y mis siervas,
y también profetizarán.
19 Haré prodigios en el cielo,
y en la tierra se verán señales de sangre,
de fuego y de vapor de humo.
20 El sol se oscurecerá,
la luna se pondrá roja como sangre,
antes de que llegue el día del Señor
y se muestre en toda su grandeza.

21 Y todo el que invoque el nombre del Señor será salvo.t

22 »Varones israelitas, escuchen mis palabras: Jesús nazareno, que fue el varón que Dios aprobó entre ustedes por las maravillas, prodigios y señales que hizo por medio de él, como ustedes mismos lo saben,23 fue entregado conforme al plan determinado y el conocimiento anticipado de Dios, y ustedes lo aprehendieron y lo mataron por medio de hombres inicuos, crucificándolo.t24 Pero Dios lo levantó,t liberándolo de los lazos de la muerte, porque era imposible que la muerte lo venciera.25 De él dice David:
Siempre veía al Señor ante mí.
Él está a mi derecha, y nada me perturbará.
26 Por eso mi corazón se alegró,
y mi lengua cantó llena de gozo.
Mi cuerpo descansará en la esperanza,
27 porque no dejarás mi alma en el Hades,
ni permitirás que tu Santo se corrompa.

28 Me hiciste conocer los caminos de la vida,
y me llenarás de gozo con tu presencia.t

29 »Varones hermanos, podemos afirmar, sin temor a equivocarnos, que nuestro patriarca David murió y fue sepultado, y que hoy sabemos dónde está su sepulcro entre nosotros.30 David era profeta, y sabía que Dios le había jurado que de su linaje humano saldría el Cristo, que se sentaría en su trono.t31 Esto lo vio antes de que sucediera, y habló de la resurrección de Cristo y de que su alma no se quedaría en el Hades, ni su cuerpo se corrompería.32 Pues a este Jesús Dios lo resucitó, y de eso todos nosotros somos testigos.33 Y como él fue exaltado por la diestra de Dios, recibió del Padre la promesa del Espíritu Santo, y ha derramado esto que ahora están viendo y oyendo.34 David mismo no subió a los cielos, pero sí dice:
»Dijo el Señor a mi Señor:
Siéntate a mi derecha,

35 hasta que yo ponga a tus enemigos
por estrado de tus pies.t

36 »Sépalo bien todo el pueblo de Israel, que a este Jesús, a quien ustedes crucificaron, Dios lo ha hecho Señor y Cristo.»

37 Al oír esto, todos sintieron un profundo remordimiento en su corazón, y les dijeron a Pedro y a los otros apóstoles: «Hermanos, ¿qué debemos hacer?»38 Y Pedro les dijo: «Arrepiéntanse, y bautícense todos ustedes en el nombre de Jesucristo, para que sus pecados les sean perdonados. Entonces recibirán el don del Espíritu Santo.39 Porque la promesa es para ustedes y para sus hijos, para todos los que están lejos, y para todos aquellos a quienes el Señor nuestro Dios llame.»40 Y con muchas otras palabras les hablaba y los animaba. Les decía: «Pónganse a salvo de esta generación perversa.»41 Fue así como los que recibieron su palabra fueron bautizados, y ese día se añadieron como tres mil personas,42 las cuales se mantenían fieles a las enseñanzas de los apóstoles y en el mutuo compañerismo, en el partimiento del pan y en las oraciones.

La vida de los primeros cristianos

43 Al ver las muchas maravillas y señales que los apóstoles hacían, todos se llenaban de temor,44 y todos los que habían creído se mantenían unidos y lo compartían todo;t45 vendían sus propiedades y posesiones, y todo lo compartían entre todos, según las necesidades de cada uno.t46 Todos los días se reunían en el templo, y partían el pan en las casas, y comían juntos con alegría y sencillez de corazón,47 mientras alababan a Dios y brindaban ayuda a todo el pueblo. Y cada día el Señor añadía a la iglesia a los que habían de ser salvos.

ACTS 2

The Coming of the Holy Spirit

1  t On the day of Pentecostt all the Lord's followers were together in one place. 2 Suddenly there was a noise from heaven like the sound of a mighty wind! It filled the house where they were meeting. 3 Then they saw what looked like fiery tongues moving in all directions, and a tongue came and settled on each person there.

4 The Holy Spirit took control of everyone, and they began speaking whatever languages the Spirit let them speak.
5 Many religious Jews from every country in the world were living in Jerusalem. 6 And when they heard this noise, a crowd gathered. But they were surprised, because they were hearing everything in their own languages.

7 They were excited and amazed, and said:
Don't all these who are speaking come from Galilee? 8 Then why do we hear them speaking our very own languages? 9 Some of us are from Parthia, Media, and Elam. Others are from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, 10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, parts of Libya near Cyrene, Rome,

11 Crete, and Arabia. Some of us were born Jews, and others of us have chosen to be Jews. Yet we all hear them using our own languages to tell the wonderful things God has done.

12 Everyone was excited and confused. Some of them even kept asking each other, “What does all this mean?”

13 Others made fun of the Lord's followers and said, “They are drunk.”

Peter Speaks to the Crowd

14 Peter stood with the eleven apostles and spoke in a loud and clear voice to the crowd:
Friends and everyone else living in Jerusalem, listen carefully to what I have to say! 15 You are wrong to think that these people are drunk. After all, it is only nine o'clock in the morning.

16 But this is what God told the prophet Joel to say,

17  t “When the last days come,
I will give my Spirit
to everyone.
Your sons and daughters
will prophesy.
Your young men
will see visions,
and your old men
will have dreams.

18 In those days I will give
my Spirit to my servants,
both men and women,
and they will prophesy.

19 I will work miracles
in the sky above
and wonders
on the earth below.
There will be blood and fire
and clouds of smoke.

20 The sun will turn dark,
and the moon
will be as red as blood
before the great
and wonderful day
of the Lord appears.

21 Then the Lord
will save everyone
who asks for his help.”
22 Now, listen to what I have to say about Jesus from Nazareth. God proved he sent Jesus to you by having him work miracles, wonders, and signs. All of you know this. 23 t God had already planned and decided that Jesus would be handed over to you. So you took him and had evil men put him to death on a cross. 24 t But God set him free from death and raised him to life. Death could not hold him in its power.

25 t What David said are really the words of Jesus,
“I always see the Lord
near me,
and I will not be afraid
with him at my right side.

26 Because of this,
my heart will be glad,
my words will be joyful,
and I will live in hope.

27 The Lord won't leave me
in the grave.
I am his holy one,
and he won't let
my body decay.

28 He has shown me
the path to life,
and he makes me glad
by being near me.”
29 My friends, it is right for me to speak to you about our ancestor David. He died and was buried, and his tomb is still here.

30 t But David was a prophet, and he knew that God had made a promise he would not break. He had told David someone from his own family would someday be king.
31 David knew this would happen, and so he told us Christ would be raised to life. He said God would not leave him in the grave or let his body decay.

32 All of us can tell you that God has raised Jesus to life!

33 Jesus was taken up to sit at the right sidet of God, and he was given the Holy Spirit, just as the Father had promised. Jesus is also the one who has given the Spirit to us, and this is what you are now seeing and hearing.
34  t David didn't go up to heaven. So he wasn't talking about himself when he said, “The Lord told my Lord to sit at his right side, 35 until he made my Lord's enemies into a footstool for him.”

36 Everyone in Israel should then know for certain that God has made Jesus both Lord and Christ, even though you put him to death on a cross.

37 When the people heard this, they were very upset. They asked Peter and the other apostles, “Friends, what should we do?”
38 Peter said to them, “Turn to God and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

39 This promise is for you and your children. It is for everyone our Lord God will choose, no matter where they live.”
40 Peter told them many other things as well. Then he said, “I beg you to save yourselves from what will happen to all these evil people.” 41 On that day about 3,000 believed his message and were baptized.

42 They spent their time learning from the apostles, and they were like family to each other. They also broke breadt and prayed together.
