Atti 2

1 E come il giorno della Pentecoste fu giunto, tutti erano insieme nel medesimo luogo.2 E di subito si fece dal cielo un suono come di vento impetuoso che soffia, ed esso riempì tutta la casa dov’essi sedevano.3 E apparvero loro delle lingue come di fuoco che si dividevano, e se ne posò una su ciascuno di loro.4 E tutti furon ripieni dello Spirito Santo, e cominciarono a parlare in altre lingue, secondo che lo Spirito dava loro d’esprimersi.5 Or in Gerusalemme si trovavan di soggiorno dei Giudei, uomini religiosi d’ogni nazione di sotto il cielo.6 Ed essendosi fatto quel suono, la moltitudine si radunò e fu confusa, perché ciascuno li udiva parlare nel suo proprio linguaggio.7 E tutti stupivano e si maravigliavano, dicendo: Ecco, tutti costoro che parlano non son eglino Galilei?8 E com’è che li udiamo parlare ciascuno nel nostro proprio natìo linguaggio?9 Noi Parti, Medi, Elamiti, abitanti della Mesopotamia, della Giudea e della Cappadocia, del Ponto e dell’Asia,10 della Frigia e della Panfilia, dell’Egitto e delle parti della Libia Cirenaica, e avventizi Romani,11 tanto Giudei che proseliti, Cretesi ed Arabi, li udiamo parlar delle cose grandi di Dio nelle nostre lingue.12 E tutti stupivano ed eran perplessi dicendosi l’uno all’altro: Che vuol esser questo?13 Ma altri, beffandosi, dicevano: Son pieni di vin dolce.

14 Ma Pietro, levatosi in piè con gli undici, alzò la voce e parlò loro in questa maniera: Uomini giudei, e voi tutti che abitate in Gerusalemme, siavi noto questo, e prestate orecchio alle mie parole.15 Perché costoro non sono ebbri, come voi supponete, poiché non è che la terza ora del giorno:16 ma questo è quel che fu detto per mezzo del profeta Gioele:17 E avverrà negli ultimi giorni, dice Iddio, che io spanderò del mio Spirito sopra ogni carne; e i vostri figliuoli e le vostre figliuole profeteranno, e i vostri giovani vedranno delle visioni, e i vostri vecchi sogneranno dei sogni.18 E anche sui miei servi e sulle mie serventi, in quei giorni, spanderò del mio Spirito, e profeteranno.19 E farò prodigi su nel cielo, e segni giù sulla terra; sangue e fuoco, e vapor di fumo.20 Il sole sarà mutato in tenebre, e la luna in sangue, prima che venga il grande e glorioso giorno, che è il giorno del Signore.21 Ed avverrà che chiunque avrà invocato il nome del Signore sarà salvato.22 Uomini israeliti, udite queste parole: Gesù il Nazareno, uomo che Dio ha accreditato fra voi mediante opere potenti e prodigi e segni che Dio fece per mezzo di lui fra voi, come voi stessi ben sapete,23 quest’uomo, allorché vi fu dato nelle mani per il determinato consiglio e per la prescienza di Dio, voi, per man d’iniqui, inchiodandolo sulla croce, lo uccideste;24 ma Dio lo risuscitò, avendo sciolto gli angosciosi legami della morte, perché non era possibile ch’egli fosse da essa ritenuto.25 Poiché Davide dice di lui: Io ho avuto del continuo il Signore davanti agli occhi, perché egli è alla mia destra, affinché io non sia smosso.26 Perciò s’è rallegrato il cuor mio, e ha giubilato la mia lingua, e anche la mia carne riposerà in isperanza;27 poiché tu non lascerai l’anima mia nell’Ades, e non permetterai che il tuo Santo vegga la corruzione.28 Tu m’hai fatto conoscere le vie della vita; tu mi riempirai di letizia con la tua presenza.29 Uomini fratelli, ben può liberamente dirvisi intorno al patriarca Davide, ch’egli morì e fu sepolto; e la sua tomba è ancora al dì d’oggi fra noi.30 Egli dunque, essendo profeta e sapendo che Dio gli avea con giuramento promesso che sul suo trono avrebbe fatto sedere uno dei suoi discendenti,31 antivedendola, parlò della risurrezione di Cristo, dicendo che non sarebbe stato lasciato nell’Ades, e che la sua carne non avrebbe veduto la corruzione.32 Questo Gesù, Iddio l’ha risuscitato; del che noi tutti siamo testimoni.33 Egli dunque, essendo stato esaltato dalla destra di Dio, e avendo ricevuto dal Padre lo Spirito Santo promesso, ha sparso quello che ora vedete e udite.34 Poiché Davide non è salito in cielo; anzi egli stesso dice: Il Signore ha detto al mio Signore: Siedi alla mia destra,35 finché io abbia posto i tuoi nemici per sgabello de’ tuoi piedi.36 Sappia dunque sicuramente tutta la casa d’Israele che Iddio ha fatto e Signore e Cristo quel Gesù che voi avete crocifisso.

37 Or essi, udite queste cose, furon compunti nel cuore, e dissero a Pietro e agli altri apostoli: Fratelli, che dobbiam fare?38 E Pietro a loro: Ravvedetevi, e ciascun di voi sia battezzato nel nome di Gesù Cristo, per la remission de’ vostri peccati, e voi riceverete il dono dello Spirito Santo.39 Poiché per voi è la promessa, e per i vostri figliuoli, e per tutti quelli che son lontani, per quanti il Signore Iddio nostro ne chiamerà.40 E con molte altre parole li scongiurava e li esortava dicendo: Salvatevi da questa perversa generazione.

41 Quelli dunque i quali accettarono la sua parola, furon battezzati; e in quel giorno furono aggiunte a loro circa tremila persone.42 Ed erano perseveranti nell’attendere all’insegnamento degli apostoli, nella comunione fraterna, nel rompere il pane e nelle preghiere.43 E ogni anima era presa da timore; e molti prodigi e segni eran fatti dagli apostoli.44 E tutti quelli che credevano erano insieme, ed aveano ogni cosa in comune;45 e vendevano le possessioni ed i beni, e li distribuivano a tutti, secondo il bisogno di ciascuno.46 E tutti i giorni, essendo di pari consentimento assidui al tempio, e rompendo il pane nelle case, prendevano il loro cibo assieme con letizia e semplicità di cuore,47 lodando Iddio, e avendo il favore di tutto il popolo. E il Signore aggiungeva ogni giorno alla loro comunità quelli che erano sulla via della salvazione.

Acts 2

The Holy Spirit and the Day of Pentecost

1 Nowt when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.2 Suddenlyt a soundt like a violent wind blowingt came from heavent and filled the entire house where they were sitting.3 And tongues spreading out like a firet appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them.

4 Allt of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languagests as the Spirit enabled them.t
5 Now there were devout Jewst from every nation under heaven residing in Jerusalem.ts6 When this soundt occurred, a crowd gathered and was in confusion,t because each one heard them speaking in his own language.7 Completely baffled, they said,t “Aren’tt all these who are speaking Galileans?8 And how is it that each one of us hears themt in our own native language?t9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and the province of Asia,t10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene,t and visitors from Rome,s11 both Jews and proselytes,s Cretans and Arabs – we hear them speaking in our own languages about the great deeds God has done!”t12 All were astounded and greatly confused, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

13 But others jeered at the speakers,t saying, “They are drunk on new wine!”ts

Peter’s Address on the Day of Pentecost

14 But Peter stood upt with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them: “You men of Judeat and all you who live in Jerusalem,s know thist and listen carefully to what I say.15 In spite of what you think, these men are not drunk,t for it is only nine o’clock in the morning.t

16 But this is what was spoken about through the prophet Joel:s

17 ‘And in the last dayssit will be,’ God says,
‘that I will pour out my Spirit on all people,t
and your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
and your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.

18 Even on my servants,tboth men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.s

19 And I will perform wonders in the skytabove
and miraculous signston the earth below,
blood and fire and clouds of smoke.

20 The sun will be changed to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the great and glorioustday of the Lord comes.

21 And thenteveryone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’s
22 “Men of Israel,t listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man clearly attested to you by God with powerful deeds,t wonders, and miraculous signst that God performed among you through him, just as you yourselves know –23 this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executedt by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles.t24 But God raised him up,t having releasedt him from the painss of death, because it was not possible for him to be held in its power.t

25 For David says about him,
‘I saw the Lord always in front of me,t
for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken.

26 Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced;
my bodytalso will live in hope,

27 because you will not leave my soul in Hades,t
nor permit your Holy One to experiencetdecay.

28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will make me full of joy with your presence.’s
29 “Brothers,t I can speak confidentlys to you about our forefathert David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.30 So then, becauset he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendantston his throne,s31 David by foreseeing thist spoke about the resurrection of the Christ,ts that he was neither abandoned to Hades,t nor did his bodytexperiencetdecay.s32 This Jesus God raised up, and we are all witnesses of it.t33 So then, exaltedt to the right hands of God, and having receivedt the promise of the Holy Spiritt from the Father, he has poured outs what you both see and hear.

34 For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says,
‘The Lord said to my lord,
“Sitsat my right hand

35 until I make your enemies a footstoolsfor your feet.”’s

36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know beyond a doubtt that God has made this Jesus whom you crucifiedt both Lords and Christ.”ts

The Response to Peter’s Address

37 Now when they heard this,t they were acutely distressedt and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “What should we do, brothers?”38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each one of you be baptizedt in the name of Jesus Christts fort the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.t39 For the promises is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to himself.”40 With many other words he testifiedt and exhorted them saying, “Save yourselves from this perverset generation!”

41 So those who acceptedt his messaget were baptized, and that day about three thousand peoplet were added.t

The Fellowship of the Early Believers

42 They were devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship,s to the breaking of bread and to prayer.t43 Reverential awet came over everyone,t and many wonders and miraculous signst came about by the apostles.44 All who believed were together and heldt everything in common,45 and they began sellingt their propertyt and possessions and distributing the proceedst to everyone, as anyone had need.46 Every dayt they continued to gather together by common consent in the temple courts,t breaking bread fromt house to house, sharing their food with glads and humble hearts,t

47 praising God and having the good willt of all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number every dayt those who were being saved.
