El Espíritu Santo desciende en Pentecostés

1 Cuando llegó el día de Pentecostés, estaban todos juntos en el mismo lugar. 2 De repente, vino del cielo un ruido como el de una violenta ráfaga de viento y llenó toda la casa donde estaban reunidos. 3 Se les aparecieron entonces unas lenguas como de fuego que se repartieron y se posaron sobre cada uno de ellos. 4 Todos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo y comenzaron a hablar en diferentes *lenguas, según el Espíritu les concedía expresarse.
5 Estaban de visita en Jerusalén judíos piadosos, procedentes de todas las naciones de la tierra. 6 Al oír aquel bullicio, se agolparon y quedaron todos pasmados porque cada uno los escuchaba hablar en su propio idioma. 7 Desconcertados y maravillados, decían: «¿No son galileos todos estos que están hablando? 8 ¿Cómo es que cada uno de nosotros los oye hablar en su lengua materna? 9 Partos, medos y elamitas; habitantes de Mesopotamia, de Judea y de Capadocia, del Ponto y de *Asia, 10 de Frigia y de Panfilia, de Egipto y de las regiones de Libia cercanas a Cirene; visitantes llegados de Roma; 11 judíos y *prosélitos; cretenses y árabes: ¡todos por igual los oímos proclamar en nuestra propia lengua las maravillas de Dios!»
12 Desconcertados y perplejos, se preguntaban: «¿Qué quiere decir esto?» 13 Otros se burlaban y decían: «Lo que pasa es que están borrachos.»

Pedro se dirige a la multitud

14 Entonces Pedro, con los once, se puso de pie y dijo a voz en cuello: «Compatriotas judíos y todos ustedes que están en Jerusalén, déjenme explicarles lo que sucede; presten atención a lo que les voy a decir. 15 Éstos no están borrachos, como suponen ustedes. ¡Apenas son las nueve de la mañana!s 16 En realidad lo que pasa es lo que anunció el profeta Joel:
17 »“Sucederá que en los últimos días —dice Dios—,
derramaré mi Espíritu sobre todo el género *humano. Los hijos y las hijas de ustedes profetizarán, tendrán visiones los jóvenes y sueños los ancianos. 18 En esos días derramaré mi Espíritu
aun sobre mis *siervos y mis siervas, y profetizarán. 19 Arriba en el cielo y abajo en la tierra mostraré prodigios:
sangre, fuego y nubes de humo. 20 El sol se convertirá en tinieblas
y la luna en sangre antes que llegue el día del Señor, día grande y esplendoroso. 21 Y todo el que invoque el nombre del Señor
será salvo.”s
22 »Pueblo de Israel, escuchen esto: Jesús de Nazaret fue un hombre acreditado por Dios ante ustedes con milagros, señales y prodigios, los cuales realizó Dios entre ustedes por medio de él, como bien lo saben. 23 Éste fue entregado según el determinado propósito y el previo conocimiento de Dios; y por medio de gente malvada,s ustedes lo mataron, clavándolo en la cruz. 24 Sin embargo, Dios lo resucitó, librándolo de las angustias de la muerte, porque era imposible que la muerte lo mantuviera bajo su dominio. 25 En efecto, David dijo de él:
»“Veía yo al Señor siempre delante de mí, porque él está a mi *derecha para que no caiga. 26 Por eso mi corazón se alegra, y canta con gozo mi lengua;
mi cuerpo también vivirá en esperanza. 27 No dejarás que mi *vida termine en el sepulcro;s
no permitirás que tu santo sufra corrupción. 28 Me has dado a conocer los caminos de la vida;
me llenarás de alegría en tu presencia.”s
29 »Hermanos, permítanme hablarles con franqueza acerca del patriarca David, que murió y fue sepultado, y cuyo sepulcro está entre nosotros hasta el día de hoy. 30 Era profeta y sabía que Dios le había prometido bajo juramento poner en el trono a uno de sus descendientes.s 31 Fue así como previó lo que iba a suceder. Refiriéndose a la resurrección del *Mesías, afirmó que Dios no dejaría que su vida terminara en el sepulcro, ni que su fin fuera la corrupción. 32 A este Jesús, Dios lo resucitó, y de ello todos nosotros somos testigos. 33 Exaltado por el poders de Dios, y habiendo recibido del Padre el Espíritu Santo prometido, ha derramado esto que ustedes ahora ven y oyen. 34 David no subió al cielo, y sin embargo declaró:
»“Dijo el Señor a mi Señor: Siéntate a mi derecha, 35 hasta que ponga a tus enemigos
por estrado de tus pies.”s
36 »Por tanto, sépalo bien todo Israel que a este Jesús, a quien ustedes crucificaron, Dios lo ha hecho Señor y Mesías.»
37 Cuando oyeron esto, todos se sintieron profundamente conmovidos y les dijeron a Pedro y a los otros apóstoles:
—Hermanos, ¿qué debemos hacer? 38 —*Arrepiéntase y bautícese cada uno de ustedes en el nombre de *Jesucristo para perdón de sus pecados —les contestó Pedro—, y recibirán el don del Espíritu Santo. 39 En efecto, la promesa es para ustedes, para sus hijos y para todos los extranjeros,s es decir, para todos aquellos a quienes el Señor nuestro Dios quiera llamar.
40 Y con muchas otras razones les exhortaba insistentemente:
—¡Sálvense de esta generación perversa!

La comunidad de los creyentes

41 Así, pues, los que recibieron su mensaje fueron bautizados, y aquel día se unieron a la iglesia unas tres mil personas. 42 Se mantenían firmes en la enseñanza de los apóstoles, en la comunión, en el partimiento del pan y en la oración. 43 Todos estaban asombrados por los muchos prodigios y señales que realizaban los apóstoles. 44 Todos los creyentes estaban juntos y tenían todo en común: 45 vendían sus propiedades y posesiones, y compartían sus bienes entre sí según la necesidad de cada uno. 46 No dejaban de reunirse en el *templo ni un solo día. De casa en casa partían el pan y compartían la comida con alegría y generosidad, 47 alabando a Dios y disfrutando de la estimación general del pueblo. Y cada día el Señor añadía al grupo los que iban siendo salvos.

Acts 2

The Holy Spirit and the Day of Pentecost

1 Nowt when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.2 Suddenlyt a soundt like a violent wind blowingt came from heavent and filled the entire house where they were sitting.3 And tongues spreading out like a firet appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them.

4 Allt of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languagests as the Spirit enabled them.t
5 Now there were devout Jewst from every nation under heaven residing in Jerusalem.ts6 When this soundt occurred, a crowd gathered and was in confusion,t because each one heard them speaking in his own language.7 Completely baffled, they said,t “Aren’tt all these who are speaking Galileans?8 And how is it that each one of us hears themt in our own native language?t9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and the province of Asia,t10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene,t and visitors from Rome,s11 both Jews and proselytes,s Cretans and Arabs – we hear them speaking in our own languages about the great deeds God has done!”t12 All were astounded and greatly confused, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

13 But others jeered at the speakers,t saying, “They are drunk on new wine!”ts

Peter’s Address on the Day of Pentecost

14 But Peter stood upt with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them: “You men of Judeat and all you who live in Jerusalem,s know thist and listen carefully to what I say.15 In spite of what you think, these men are not drunk,t for it is only nine o’clock in the morning.t

16 But this is what was spoken about through the prophet Joel:s

17 ‘And in the last dayssit will be,’ God says,
‘that I will pour out my Spirit on all people,t
and your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
and your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.

18 Even on my servants,tboth men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.s

19 And I will perform wonders in the skytabove
and miraculous signston the earth below,
blood and fire and clouds of smoke.

20 The sun will be changed to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the great and glorioustday of the Lord comes.

21 And thenteveryone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’s
22 “Men of Israel,t listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man clearly attested to you by God with powerful deeds,t wonders, and miraculous signst that God performed among you through him, just as you yourselves know –23 this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executedt by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles.t24 But God raised him up,t having releasedt him from the painss of death, because it was not possible for him to be held in its power.t

25 For David says about him,
‘I saw the Lord always in front of me,t
for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken.

26 Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced;
my bodytalso will live in hope,

27 because you will not leave my soul in Hades,t
nor permit your Holy One to experiencetdecay.

28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will make me full of joy with your presence.’s
29 “Brothers,t I can speak confidentlys to you about our forefathert David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.30 So then, becauset he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendantston his throne,s31 David by foreseeing thist spoke about the resurrection of the Christ,ts that he was neither abandoned to Hades,t nor did his bodytexperiencetdecay.s32 This Jesus God raised up, and we are all witnesses of it.t33 So then, exaltedt to the right hands of God, and having receivedt the promise of the Holy Spiritt from the Father, he has poured outs what you both see and hear.

34 For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says,
‘The Lord said to my lord,
“Sitsat my right hand

35 until I make your enemies a footstoolsfor your feet.”’s

36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know beyond a doubtt that God has made this Jesus whom you crucifiedt both Lords and Christ.”ts

The Response to Peter’s Address

37 Now when they heard this,t they were acutely distressedt and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “What should we do, brothers?”38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each one of you be baptizedt in the name of Jesus Christts fort the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.t39 For the promises is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to himself.”40 With many other words he testifiedt and exhorted them saying, “Save yourselves from this perverset generation!”

41 So those who acceptedt his messaget were baptized, and that day about three thousand peoplet were added.t

The Fellowship of the Early Believers

42 They were devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship,s to the breaking of bread and to prayer.t43 Reverential awet came over everyone,t and many wonders and miraculous signst came about by the apostles.44 All who believed were together and heldt everything in common,45 and they began sellingt their propertyt and possessions and distributing the proceedst to everyone, as anyone had need.46 Every dayt they continued to gather together by common consent in the temple courts,t breaking bread fromt house to house, sharing their food with glads and humble hearts,t

47 praising God and having the good willt of all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number every dayt those who were being saved.
