Pavel, în drum spre Ierusalim

1 După ce ne-am luat rămas bun de la ei, am plecat pe mare îndreptându-ne spre Cos. În ziua următoare, am ajuns în Rodos, iar de acolo în Patara.2 Am găsit o corabie care se îndrepta spre Fenicia, ne-am îmbarcat și am plecat.3 Ne-a apărut în zare insula Cipru și, lăsând-o în stânga, am navigat spre Siria; apoi am acostat în Tir, pentru că acolo urma să se descarce corabia.4 I-am găsit pe ucenici și am rămas cu ei timp de șapte zile. Aceștia îl avertizau pe Pavel, prin Duhul, de ce anume se va întâmpla când va pune piciorul în Ierusalim.t5 Când zilele de stat alături de ei s-au încheiat, am plecat și ne-am continuat călătoria. Toți, împreună cu soțiile și copiii, ne-au condus până afară din cetate. A colo , pe țărm, ne-am plecat pe genunchi și ne-am rugat.6 Ne-am luat apoi rămas bun unii de la alții, după care noi ne-am urcat în corabie, iar ei s-au întors la ale lor.

7 Din Tir am plecat mai departe, ajungând în Ptolemaida. I-am salutat pe frați și am rămas cu ei timp de o zi.8 În ziua următoare am plecat și ne-am dus în Cezareea. Am intrat în casa lui Filip, evanghelistul, care era unul din cei șapte, și am rămas la el.9 Acesta avea patru fete fecioare, care profețeau.10 Fiindcă am rămas acolo mai multe zile, un profet, pe nume Agab, s-a coborât din Iudeea11 și a venit la noi. El a luat brâul lui Pavel și și-a legat picioarele și mâinile, zicând: „Așa vorbește Duhul Sfânt: «În felul acesta îl vor lega iudeii în Ierusalim pe omul căruia îi aparține brâul acesta și-l vor trăda în mâinile neamurilor!»“12 Când am auzit aceste lucruri, atât noi, cât și localnicii l-am rugat pe Pavel să nu se suie la Ierusalim.13 Atunci Pavel a răspuns: „Ce faceți de plângeți așa și-mi rupeți inima?! Eu sunt gata nu numai să fiu legat, ci chiar să și mor în Ierusalim pentru Numele Domnului Isus!“14 Pentru că nu putea fi înduplecat, am tăcut, spunând doar: „Facă-se voia Domnului!“

15 După zilele acelea, ne-am pregătit și ne-am suit la Ierusalim.16 Au venit cu noi și câțiva ucenici din Cezareea și ne-au condus la Mnason, un vechi ucenic din Cipru, la care urma să găzduim.

Pavel în Ierusalim

17 Când am sosit în Ierusalim, frații ne-au primit cu bucurie.18 A doua zi Pavel a mers împreună cu noi la Iacov, și toți bătrâniit au venit și ei.19 După ce i-a salutat, Pavel le-a istorisit, unul câte unul, lucrurile pe care le făcuse Dumnezeu printre neamuri prin slujba lui.20 Când au auzit ei aceste lucruri, L-au slăvit pe Dumnezeu și i-au zis lui Pavel : „Vezi, frate, câte mii de iudei au crezut și toți sunt plini de râvnă pentru Lege!21 Lor însă li s-a spus despre tine că-i înveți pe toți iudeii dintre neamuri să se lepede de Legea lui Moise, că le zici să nu-și circumcidă copiii și să nu mai respecte obiceiurile.22 Ce este de făcut? Cu siguranță vor auzi că ai sosit.23 Fă deci ce-ți spunem noi: avem aici patru bărbați care au făcut un jurământt.24 Ia-i cu tine, curățește-te împreună cu ei și cheltuiet tu pentru ei ca să-și radă capul. Și astfel vor ști toți că nimic din ceea ce li s-a spus despre tine nu este așa, ci că și tu trăiești păzind Legea.25 Cu privire la neamurile care au crezut, noi am hotărât și le-am trimis să se ferească de ceea ce este jertfit idolilor, de sânge, de animale sugrumatet și de adulter.“

26 Atunci Pavel i-a luat pe acei bărbați și, a doua zi, după ce s-a curățit împreună cu ei, a intrat în Templu și a anunțat când va fi sfârșitul zilelor de curățire, când urma să fie adusă o jertfă pentru fiecare dintre ei.

Arestarea lui Pavel

27 Când cele șapte zile erau pe sfârșite, iudeii din Asia l-au văzut pe Pavel în Templu; ei au stârnit toată mulțimea și au pus mâinile pe el,28 strigând: „Bărbați israeliți, veniți în ajutor! Acesta este omul care-i învață pe toți, pretutindeni, împotriva poporului nostru , împotriva Legii și împotriva acestui loc! Ba încă a adus și niște greci în Templu și a pângărit acest loc sfânt!“29 Căci îl văzuseră mai înainte în cetate pe Trofim efeseanul împreună cu Pavel și credeau că Pavel îl adusese în Templu.30 Toată cetatea s-a pus în mișcare, și poporul a venit alergând din toate părțile . L-au prins pe Pavel și l-au târât afară din Templu; și imediat ușile au fost încuiate.31 În timp ce încercau să-l omoare, s-a dus vestea la tribunul cohorteit că tot Ierusalimul este în agitație.32 Acesta a luat imediat niște soldați și niște centurionit și a alergat la ei. Când l-au văzut pe tribun și pe soldați, au încetat să-l mai bată pe Pavel.33 Atunci tribunul s-a apropiat, l-a arestat pe Pavel și a poruncit să fie legat cu două lanțuri. Apoi a întrebat cine era și ce făcuse.34 Unii din mulțime strigau una, alții alta, așa că, din cauza zarvei, neputând să afle exact ce se întâmplase , a poruncit să fie dus în fort.35 Când a ajuns la trepte, Pavel a trebuit să fie dus de către soldați, din pricina violenței mulțimii.36 Căci mulțimea poporului se ținea după el, strigând: „La moarte cu el!“

Pavel se adresează mulțimii

37 Chiar când urma să fie băgat în fort, Pavel i-a zis tribunului:
– Îmi este îngăduit să-ți spun ceva?
Tribunul l-a întrebat:
– Știi grecește?38 Deci nu ești tu egipteanul care, cu câtva timp în urmă, a pornit o răscoală și a dus în pustie patru mii de asasinit?

39 Pavel i-a răspuns:
– Eu sunt iudeu, din Tarsul Ciliciei, cetățean al unei cetăți nu lipsită de importanțăt. Dă-mi voie, te rog, să vorbesc poporului!

40 Tribunul i-a dat voie, iar Pavel, stând în picioare pe trepte, a făcut poporului semn cu mâna. Când s-a făcut tăcere deplină, li s-a adresat în limba aramaicăt astfel:

Paul Goes to Jerusalem

1 After saying goodbye, we sailed straight to Cos. The next day we reached Rhodes and from there sailed on to Patara.

2 We found a ship going to Phoenicia, so we got on board and sailed off.
3 We came within sight of Cyprus and then sailed south of it on to the port of Tyre in Syria, where the ship was going to unload its cargo. 4 We found the Lord's followers and stayed with them for a week. The Holy Spirit had told them to warn Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. 5 But when the week was over, we started on our way again. All the men, together with their wives and children, walked with us from the town to the seashore. We knelt on the beach and prayed.

6 Then after saying goodbye to each other, we got into the ship, and they went back home.
7 We sailed from Tyre to Ptolemais, where we greeted the followers and stayed with them for a day. 8 t The next day we went to Caesarea and stayed with Philip, the preacher. He was one of the seven men who helped the apostles,

9 and he had four unmarriedt daughters who prophesied.
10  t We had been in Caesarea for several days, when the prophet Agabus came to us from Judea. 11 He took Paul's belt, and with it he tied up his own hands and feet. Then he told us, “The Holy Spirit says that some of the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will tie up the man who owns this belt. They will also hand him over to the Gentiles.”

12 After Agabus said this, we and the followers living there begged Paul not to go to Jerusalem.

13 But Paul answered, “Why are you crying and breaking my heart? I am not only willing to be put in jail for the Lord Jesus, but I am even willing to die for him in Jerusalem!”

14 Since we could not get Paul to change his mind, we gave up and prayed, “Lord, please make us willing to do what you want.”
15 Then we got ready to go to Jerusalem.

16 Some of the followers from Caesarea went with us and took us to stay in the home of Mnason. He was from Cyprus and had been a follower from the beginning.

Paul Visits James

20 Everyone who heard this praised God and said to Paul:
My friend, you can see how many tens of thousands of our people have become followers! And all of them are eager to obey the Law of Moses.

21 But they have been told that you are teaching those who live among the Gentiles to disobey this Law. They claim that you are telling them not to circumcise their sons or to follow our customs.
22 What should we do now that our people have heard you are here? 23 t Please do what we ask, because four of our men have made special promises to God.

24 Join with them and prepare yourself for the ceremony that goes with the promises. Pay the cost for their heads to be shaved. Then everyone will learn that the reports about you are not true. They will know you do obey the Law of Moses.

25  t Some while ago we told the Gentile followers what we think they should do. We instructed them not to eat anything offered to idols. They were told not to eat any meat with blood still in it or the meat of an animal that has been strangled. They were also told not to commit any terrible sexual sins.t

26 The next day Paul took the four men with him and got himself ready at the same time they did. Then he went into the temple and told when the final ceremony would take place and when an offering would be made for each of them.

Paul Is Arrested

29 t Some of them thought that Paul had brought Trophimus from Ephesus into the temple, because they had seen them together in the city.
30 The whole city was in an uproar, and the people turned into a mob. They grabbed Paul and dragged him out of the temple. Then suddenly the doors were shut. 31 The people were about to kill Paul when the Roman army commander heard that all Jerusalem was starting to riot.

32 So he quickly took some soldiers and officers and ran to where the crowd had gathered.
As soon as the mob saw the commander and soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33 The army commander went over and arrested him and had him bound with two chains. Then he tried to find out who Paul was and what he had done. 34 Part of the crowd shouted one thing, and part of them shouted something else. But they were making so much noise that the commander could not find out a thing. Then he ordered Paul to be taken into the fortress. 35 As they reached the steps, the crowd became so wild that the soldiers had to lift Paul up and carry him.

36 The crowd followed and kept shouting, “Kill him! Kill him!”

Paul Speaks to the Crowd

37 When Paul was about to be taken into the fortress, he asked the commander, “Can I say something to you?”
“How do you know Greek?” the commander asked.

38 “Aren't you that Egyptian who started a riot not long ago and led 4,000 terrorists into the desert?”

39 “No!” Paul replied. “I am a Jew from Tarsus, an important city in Cilicia. Please let me speak to the crowd.”
40 The commander told him he could speak, so Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the people. When they were quiet, he spoke to them in Aramaic:t
