Viaje de Pablo a Jerusalén

1  Después de despedirnos de los ancianos de Éfeso, navegamos directamente a la isla de Cos. Al día siguiente, llegamos a Rodas y luego fuimos a Pátara. 2 Allí abordamos un barco que iba a Fenicia. 3 Divisamos la isla de Chipre, la pasamos por nuestra izquierda y llegamos al puerto de Tiro, en Siria, donde el barco tenía que descargar.

4 Desembarcamos, encontramos a los creyentest del lugar y nos quedamos con ellos una semana. Estos creyentes profetizaron por medio del Espíritu Santo, que Pablo no debía seguir a Jerusalén. 5 Cuando regresamos al barco al final de esa semana, toda la congregación, incluidos las mujerest y los niños, salieron de la ciudad y nos acompañaron a la orilla del mar. Allí nos arrodillamos, oramos 6 y nos despedimos. Luego abordamos el barco y ellos volvieron a casa.

7 Después de dejar Tiro, la siguiente parada fue Tolemaida, donde saludamos a los hermanos y nos quedamos un día. 8 Al día siguiente, continuamos hasta Cesarea y nos quedamos en la casa de Felipe el evangelista, uno de los siete hombres que habían sido elegidos para distribuir los alimentos. 9 Tenía cuatro hijas solteras, que habían recibido el don de profecía.

10 Varios días después, llegó de Judea un hombre llamado Ágabo, quien también tenía el don de profecía. 11 Se acercó, tomó el cinturón de Pablo y se ató los pies y las manos. Luego dijo: «El Espíritu Santo declara: “De esta forma será atado el dueño de este cinturón por los líderes judíos en Jerusalén y entregado a los gentilest”». 12 Cuando lo oímos, tanto nosotros como los creyentes del lugar le suplicamos a Pablo que no fuera a Jerusalén.

13 Pero él dijo: «¿Por qué todo este llanto? ¡Me parten el corazón! Yo estoy dispuesto no sólo a ser encarcelado en Jerusalén, sino incluso a morir por el Señor Jesús». 14 Al ver que era imposible convencerlo, nos dimos por vencidos y dijimos: «Que se haga la voluntad del Señor».

Pablo llega a Jerusalén

15 Después de esto, empacamos nuestras cosas y salimos hacia Jerusalén. 16 Algunos creyentes de Cesarea nos acompañaron y nos llevaron a la casa de Mnasón, un hombre originario de Chipre y uno de los primeros creyentes. 17 Cuando llegamos, los hermanos de Jerusalén nos dieron una calurosa bienvenida.

18 Al día siguiente, Pablo fue con nosotros para encontrarnos con Santiago, y todos los ancianos de la iglesia de Jerusalén estaban presentes. 19 Después de saludarlos, Pablo dio un informe detallado de las cosas que Dios había realizado entre los gentiles mediante su ministerio.

20 Después de oírlo, alabaron a Dios. Luego dijeron: «Tú sabes, querido hermano, cuántos miles de judíos también han creído, y todos ellos siguen muy en serio la ley de Moisés; 21 pero se les ha dicho a los creyentes judíos de aquí, de Jerusalén, que tú enseñas a todos los judíos que viven entre los gentiles que abandonen la ley de Moisés. Ellos han oído que les enseñas que no circunciden a sus hijos ni que practiquen otras costumbres judías. 22 ¿Qué debemos hacer? Seguramente se van a enterar de tu llegada.

23 »Queremos que hagas lo siguiente: Hay entre nosotros cuatro hombres que han cumplido su voto; 24 acompáñalos al templo y participa con ellos en la ceremonia de purificación, y paga tú los gastos para que se rapen la cabeza según el ritual judío. Entonces todos sabrán que los rumores son falsos y que tú mismo cumples las leyes judías.

25 »En cuanto a los creyentes gentiles, ellos deben hacer lo que ya les dijimos en una carta: abstenerse de comer alimentos ofrecidos a ídolos, de consumir sangre o la carne de animales estrangulados, y de la inmoralidad sexual».

Arresto de Pablo

26 Así que, al día siguiente, Pablo fue al templo con los otros hombres. Ya comenzado el ritual de purificación, anunció públicamente la fecha en que se cumpliría el tiempo de los votos y se ofrecerían sacrificios por cada uno de los hombres.

27 Cuando estaban por cumplirse los siete días del voto, unos judíos de la provincia de Asia vieron a Pablo en el templo e incitaron a una turba en su contra. Lo agarraron 28 mientras gritaban: «¡Hombres de Israel, ayúdennos! Este es el hombre que predica en contra de nuestro pueblo en todas partes y les dice a todos que desobedezcan las leyes judías. Habla en contra del templo, ¡y hasta profana este lugar santo llevando gentilest adentro!». 29 (Pues más temprano ese mismo día lo habían visto en la ciudad con Trófimo, un gentil de Éfeso,t y supusieron que Pablo lo había llevado al templo).

30 Toda la ciudad fue estremecida por estas acusaciones y se desencadenó un gran disturbio. Agarraron a Pablo y lo arrastraron fuera del templo e inmediatamente cerraron las puertas detrás de él. 31 Cuando estaban a punto de matarlo, le llegó al comandante del regimiento romano la noticia de que toda Jerusalén estaba alborotada. 32 De inmediato el comandante llamó a sus soldados y oficialest y corrió entre la multitud. Cuando la turba vio que venían el comandante y las tropas, dejaron de golpear a Pablo.

33 Luego el comandante lo arrestó y ordenó que lo sujetaran con dos cadenas. Le preguntó a la multitud quién era él y qué había hecho. 34 Unos gritaban una cosa, y otros otra. Como no pudo averiguar la verdad entre todo el alboroto y la confusión, ordenó que llevaran a Pablo a la fortaleza. 35 Cuando Pablo llegó a las escaleras, la turba se puso tan violenta que los soldados tuvieron que levantarlo sobre sus hombros para protegerlo. 36 Y la multitud seguía gritando desde atrás: «¡Mátenlo! ¡Mátenlo!».

37 Cuando estaban por llevarlo adentro, Pablo le dijo al comandante:
—¿Puedo hablar con usted?
—¿¡Hablas griego!? —le preguntó el comandante, sorprendido—. 38 ¿No eres tú el egipcio que encabezó una rebelión hace un tiempo y llevó al desierto a cuatro mil miembros del grupo llamado “Los Asesinos”?

39 —No —contestó Pablo—, soy judío y ciudadano de Tarso de Cilicia, que es una ciudad importante. Por favor permítame hablar con esta gente.

40 El comandante estuvo de acuerdo, entonces Pablo se puso de pie en las escaleras e hizo señas para pedir silencio. Pronto un gran silencio envolvió a la multitud, y Pablo se dirigió a la gente en su propia lengua, en arameo.t

ACTS 21

Paul Goes to Jerusalem

1 After saying goodbye, we sailed straight to Cos. The next day we reached Rhodes and from there sailed on to Patara.

2 We found a ship going to Phoenicia, so we got on board and sailed off.
3 We came within sight of Cyprus and then sailed south of it on to the port of Tyre in Syria, where the ship was going to unload its cargo. 4 We found the Lord's followers and stayed with them for a week. The Holy Spirit had told them to warn Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. 5 But when the week was over, we started on our way again. All the men, together with their wives and children, walked with us from the town to the seashore. We knelt on the beach and prayed.

6 Then after saying goodbye to each other, we got into the ship, and they went back home.
7 We sailed from Tyre to Ptolemais, where we greeted the followers and stayed with them for a day. 8 t The next day we went to Caesarea and stayed with Philip, the preacher. He was one of the seven men who helped the apostles,

9 and he had four unmarriedt daughters who prophesied.
10  t We had been in Caesarea for several days, when the prophet Agabus came to us from Judea. 11 He took Paul's belt, and with it he tied up his own hands and feet. Then he told us, “The Holy Spirit says that some of the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will tie up the man who owns this belt. They will also hand him over to the Gentiles.”

12 After Agabus said this, we and the followers living there begged Paul not to go to Jerusalem.

13 But Paul answered, “Why are you crying and breaking my heart? I am not only willing to be put in jail for the Lord Jesus, but I am even willing to die for him in Jerusalem!”

14 Since we could not get Paul to change his mind, we gave up and prayed, “Lord, please make us willing to do what you want.”
15 Then we got ready to go to Jerusalem.

16 Some of the followers from Caesarea went with us and took us to stay in the home of Mnason. He was from Cyprus and had been a follower from the beginning.

Paul Visits James

20 Everyone who heard this praised God and said to Paul:
My friend, you can see how many tens of thousands of our people have become followers! And all of them are eager to obey the Law of Moses.

21 But they have been told that you are teaching those who live among the Gentiles to disobey this Law. They claim that you are telling them not to circumcise their sons or to follow our customs.
22 What should we do now that our people have heard you are here? 23 t Please do what we ask, because four of our men have made special promises to God.

24 Join with them and prepare yourself for the ceremony that goes with the promises. Pay the cost for their heads to be shaved. Then everyone will learn that the reports about you are not true. They will know you do obey the Law of Moses.

25  t Some while ago we told the Gentile followers what we think they should do. We instructed them not to eat anything offered to idols. They were told not to eat any meat with blood still in it or the meat of an animal that has been strangled. They were also told not to commit any terrible sexual sins.t

26 The next day Paul took the four men with him and got himself ready at the same time they did. Then he went into the temple and told when the final ceremony would take place and when an offering would be made for each of them.

Paul Is Arrested

29 t Some of them thought that Paul had brought Trophimus from Ephesus into the temple, because they had seen them together in the city.
30 The whole city was in an uproar, and the people turned into a mob. They grabbed Paul and dragged him out of the temple. Then suddenly the doors were shut. 31 The people were about to kill Paul when the Roman army commander heard that all Jerusalem was starting to riot.

32 So he quickly took some soldiers and officers and ran to where the crowd had gathered.
As soon as the mob saw the commander and soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33 The army commander went over and arrested him and had him bound with two chains. Then he tried to find out who Paul was and what he had done. 34 Part of the crowd shouted one thing, and part of them shouted something else. But they were making so much noise that the commander could not find out a thing. Then he ordered Paul to be taken into the fortress. 35 As they reached the steps, the crowd became so wild that the soldiers had to lift Paul up and carry him.

36 The crowd followed and kept shouting, “Kill him! Kill him!”

Paul Speaks to the Crowd

37 When Paul was about to be taken into the fortress, he asked the commander, “Can I say something to you?”
“How do you know Greek?” the commander asked.

38 “Aren't you that Egyptian who started a riot not long ago and led 4,000 terrorists into the desert?”

39 “No!” Paul replied. “I am a Jew from Tarsus, an important city in Cilicia. Please let me speak to the crowd.”
40 The commander told him he could speak, so Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the people. When they were quiet, he spoke to them in Aramaic:t
