Viaje de Pablo a Jerusalén

1 Después de despedirnos de ellos, zarpamos y nos fuimos directamente a Cos, y al día siguiente a Rodas, y de allí continuamos a Pátara.2 Allí dimos con un barco que se dirigía a Fenicia, así que nos embarcamos en él y zarpamos.3 Del lado izquierdo pudimos ver Chipre, pero seguimos navegando hacia Siria y arribamos a Tiro, porque el barco tenía que descargar allí.4 Como allí encontramos a los discípulos, nos quedamos con ellos siete días. Ellos, por medio del Espíritu, le decían a Pablo que no fuera a Jerusalén.5 Cumplidos los siete días, salimos de la ciudad, y todos nos acompañaron con sus mujeres y sus hijos. En la playa nos pusimos de rodillas y oramos,6 luego nos abrazamos unos a otros, y subimos al barco. Ellos, por su parte, volvieron a sus casas.

7 Nosotros seguimos navegando. Salimos de Tiro y arribamos a Tolemaida; allí saludamos a los hermanos y nos quedamos con ellos un día.8 Al día siguiente, salimos y nos dirigimos a Cesarea; allí nos hospedamos en casa de Felipet el evangelista, que era uno de los siete9 y que tenía cuatro hijas doncellas que profetizaban.10 Durante los días que allí permanecimos, un profeta llamado Agabot llegó de Judea,11 pues venía a vernos. Agabo tomó el cinto de Pablo, se ató con él las manos y los pies, y dijo: «El Espíritu Santo ha dicho: “Así atarán los judíos en Jerusalén al dueño de este cinto, y lo entregarán a los no judíos.”»12 Al oír esto, nosotros y los de Cesarea le rogamos a Pablo que no fuera a Jerusalén.13 Pero Pablo respondió: «¿Por qué lloran? ¡Se me parte el corazón! Por el nombre del Señor Jesús, yo estoy dispuesto no sólo a que me aten, sino a que me maten en Jerusalén.»14 Como no pudimos convencerlo, dejamos de insistir y le dijimos: «¡Que se haga la voluntad del Señor!»

15 Días después hicimos los preparativos y subimos a Jerusalén.16 Algunos de los discípulos de Cesarea nos acompañaron; consigo llevaron a Mnasón, un antiguo discípulo de Chipre, en cuya casa nos hospedaríamos.

Arresto de Pablo en el templo

17 Cuando llegamos a Jerusalén, los hermanos nos recibieron con mucho gozo.18 Al día siguiente entramos con Pablo en casa de Jacobo. Allí estaban reunidos todos los ancianos.19 Después de saludarlos, Pablo les habló de su ministerio, y con mucho detalle les contó lo que Dios había hecho entre los no judíos.20 Cuando ellos lo oyeron, glorificaron a Dios y le dijeron: «Hermano Pablo, ya hemos visto cuántos miles de judíos han creído, todos ellos celosos de la ley.21 Lo que aquí se ha sabido es que a los judíos que están entre los no judíos los enseñas a renegar de las enseñanzas de Moisés, y que les dices que no circunciden a sus hijos ni observen nuestras costumbres.22 ¿Qué dices a esto? Seguramente ya se sabe que has venido,23 así que te recomendamos hacer lo siguiente: Hay entre nosotros cuatro hombres que están obligados a cumplir un voto.24 Ve y purifícate con ellos, y paga para que les rasuren la cabeza.t Así todos comprenderán que no es cierto lo que supieron acerca de ti, y que también tú obedeces la ley.25 En cuanto a los creyentes no judíos, nosotros ya les hemos escrito y les recomendamos que no observen nada de esto, sino que se abstengan solamente de comer lo que se sacrifica a los ídolos, que no coman sangre ni animales ahogados, ni incurran en libertinaje sexual.»t26 Pablo tomó consigo a aquellos hombres, y al día siguiente se purificó con ellos y entró en el templo para dar a conocer los días cuando se cumpliría la purificación y se presentaría la ofrenda por cada uno de ellos.

27 Cuando estaban por cumplirse los siete días, unos judíos de la provincia de Asia lo vieron en el templo, así que alborotaron a toda la multitud y lo aprehendieron,28 al tiempo que gritaban: «¡Varones israelitas, vengan a ayudarnos! Éste es el hombre que por todas partes anda esparciendo sus enseñanzas en contra del pueblo, de la ley y de este lugar. Y no sólo eso, sino que ha metido a unos griegos en el templo, con lo que ha profanado este santo lugar.»29 Y es que en la ciudad ya habían visto a Pablo con Trófimo,t el de Éfeso, y pensaban que Pablo lo había metido en el templo.30 Así que había mucha inquietud en toda la ciudad; la gente se agolpó y se apoderó de Pablo, y entre todos lo sacaron del templo a rastras, y enseguida cerraron las puertas,31 pues querían matarlo. Pero se dio aviso al tribuno de la compañía, de que había mucho alboroto en la ciudad de Jerusalén,32 y éste tomó soldados y centuriones, y se fue tras ellos. Cuando la gente vio al tribuno y a los soldados, dejó de golpear a Pablo.33 Entonces llegó el tribuno y lo aprehendió, y ordenó que lo encadenaran; luego le preguntó quién era y qué había hecho.34 Entre la multitud, unos gritaban una cosa, y otros, otra; y como a causa del alboroto el tribuno no podía entender nada con claridad, mandó que lo llevaran a la fortaleza.35 Al llegar a las gradas, los soldados tuvieron que llevarlo en vilo, pues la multitud estaba muy violenta,36 y todo el pueblo que venía detrás gritaba: «¡Mátenlo!»

Defensa de Pablo ante el pueblo

37 Cuando estaban por meter a Pablo en la fortaleza, éste le dijo al tribuno: «¿Me permites decirte algo?» Y el tribuno respondió: «¿Sabes griego?38 ¿Acaso no eres tú aquel egipcio sedicioso, que hace poco se sublevó y llevó al desierto a cuatro mil sicarios?»39 Pablo le dijo: «No. Soy judío, y nací en Tarso de Cilicia, que no es una ciudad insignificante. Te ruego que me permitas hablar al pueblo.»40 El tribuno se lo permitió. Entonces Pablo, de pie en las gradas, hizo una señal con la mano al pueblo, para que se callaran. En cuanto hubo silencio, les dijo en arameo:

Paul Goes to Jerusalem

1 After saying goodbye, we sailed straight to Cos. The next day we reached Rhodes and from there sailed on to Patara.

2 We found a ship going to Phoenicia, so we got on board and sailed off.
3 We came within sight of Cyprus and then sailed south of it on to the port of Tyre in Syria, where the ship was going to unload its cargo. 4 We found the Lord's followers and stayed with them for a week. The Holy Spirit had told them to warn Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. 5 But when the week was over, we started on our way again. All the men, together with their wives and children, walked with us from the town to the seashore. We knelt on the beach and prayed.

6 Then after saying goodbye to each other, we got into the ship, and they went back home.
7 We sailed from Tyre to Ptolemais, where we greeted the followers and stayed with them for a day. 8 t The next day we went to Caesarea and stayed with Philip, the preacher. He was one of the seven men who helped the apostles,

9 and he had four unmarriedt daughters who prophesied.
10  t We had been in Caesarea for several days, when the prophet Agabus came to us from Judea. 11 He took Paul's belt, and with it he tied up his own hands and feet. Then he told us, “The Holy Spirit says that some of the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will tie up the man who owns this belt. They will also hand him over to the Gentiles.”

12 After Agabus said this, we and the followers living there begged Paul not to go to Jerusalem.

13 But Paul answered, “Why are you crying and breaking my heart? I am not only willing to be put in jail for the Lord Jesus, but I am even willing to die for him in Jerusalem!”

14 Since we could not get Paul to change his mind, we gave up and prayed, “Lord, please make us willing to do what you want.”
15 Then we got ready to go to Jerusalem.

16 Some of the followers from Caesarea went with us and took us to stay in the home of Mnason. He was from Cyprus and had been a follower from the beginning.

Paul Visits James

20 Everyone who heard this praised God and said to Paul:
My friend, you can see how many tens of thousands of our people have become followers! And all of them are eager to obey the Law of Moses.

21 But they have been told that you are teaching those who live among the Gentiles to disobey this Law. They claim that you are telling them not to circumcise their sons or to follow our customs.
22 What should we do now that our people have heard you are here? 23 t Please do what we ask, because four of our men have made special promises to God.

24 Join with them and prepare yourself for the ceremony that goes with the promises. Pay the cost for their heads to be shaved. Then everyone will learn that the reports about you are not true. They will know you do obey the Law of Moses.

25  t Some while ago we told the Gentile followers what we think they should do. We instructed them not to eat anything offered to idols. They were told not to eat any meat with blood still in it or the meat of an animal that has been strangled. They were also told not to commit any terrible sexual sins.t

26 The next day Paul took the four men with him and got himself ready at the same time they did. Then he went into the temple and told when the final ceremony would take place and when an offering would be made for each of them.

Paul Is Arrested

29 t Some of them thought that Paul had brought Trophimus from Ephesus into the temple, because they had seen them together in the city.
30 The whole city was in an uproar, and the people turned into a mob. They grabbed Paul and dragged him out of the temple. Then suddenly the doors were shut. 31 The people were about to kill Paul when the Roman army commander heard that all Jerusalem was starting to riot.

32 So he quickly took some soldiers and officers and ran to where the crowd had gathered.
As soon as the mob saw the commander and soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33 The army commander went over and arrested him and had him bound with two chains. Then he tried to find out who Paul was and what he had done. 34 Part of the crowd shouted one thing, and part of them shouted something else. But they were making so much noise that the commander could not find out a thing. Then he ordered Paul to be taken into the fortress. 35 As they reached the steps, the crowd became so wild that the soldiers had to lift Paul up and carry him.

36 The crowd followed and kept shouting, “Kill him! Kill him!”

Paul Speaks to the Crowd

37 When Paul was about to be taken into the fortress, he asked the commander, “Can I say something to you?”
“How do you know Greek?” the commander asked.

38 “Aren't you that Egyptian who started a riot not long ago and led 4,000 terrorists into the desert?”

39 “No!” Paul replied. “I am a Jew from Tarsus, an important city in Cilicia. Please let me speak to the crowd.”
40 The commander told him he could speak, so Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the people. When they were quiet, he spoke to them in Aramaic:t
