Pablo en Malta

1 Una vez que ellos estaban a salvo, nos enteramos de que la isla se llamaba Malta.

2 Los habitantes de la isla nos mostraron toda clase de atenciones, porque a causa de la lluvia que caía y del frío, encendieron una hoguera y nos acogieron a todos.
3 Pero cuando Pablo recogió una brazada de leña y la echó al fuego, una víbora salió huyendo del calor y se le prendió en la mano.4 Cuando los habitantes, vieron el animal colgando de su mano, decían entre sí: "Sin duda que este hombre es un asesino, pues aunque fue salvado del mar, la diosa Justicia no le ha concedido vivir."5  Pablo, sin embargo, sacudiendo la mano, arrojó el animal al fuego y no sufrió ningún daño.

6 Ellos esperaban que comenzara a hincharse, o que súbitamente cayera muerto. Pero después de esperar por largo rato, y de no observar nada anormal en él, cambiaron de parecer y decían que Pablo era un dios.
7 Cerca de allí había unas tierras que pertenecían al hombre principal de la isla, que se llamaba Publio, el cual nos recibió y nos hospedó con toda amabilidad por tres días.

8 Como el padre de Publio estaba en cama, enfermo con fiebre y disentería, Pablo entró a ver lo, y después de orar puso las manos sobre él, y lo sanó.
9 Cuando esto sucedió, los demás habitantes de la isla que tenían enfermedades venían a él y eran curados.

10 También nos honraron con muchas demostraciones de respeto, y cuando estábamos para salir, nos suplieron con todo lo necesario.

11 Después de tres meses, nos hicimos a la vela en una nave Alejandrina que había invernado en la isla, y que tenía por insignia a los Hermanos Gemelos.12 Al llegar a Siracusa, nos quedamos allí por tres días.13 Saliendo de allí, seguimos la costa hasta llegar a Regio. Al día siguiente se levantó un viento del sur y en dos días llegamos a Puteoli.

14 Allí encontramos algunos hermanos, que nos invitaron a permanecer con ellos por siete días. Y así llegamos a Roma.

15 Al tener noticia de nuestra llegada, los hermanos vinieron desde allá a recibirnos hasta el Foro de Apio y Las Tres Tabernas; y cuando Pablo los vio, dio gracias a Dios y cobró ánimo.

16 Cuando entramos en Roma, el centurión entregó los presos al prefecto militar, pero a Pablo se le permitió vivir aparte, con el soldado que lo custodiaba.
17 Tres días después Pablo convocó a los principales de los Judíos, y cuando se reunieron, les dijo: "Hermanos, sin haber hecho yo nada contra nuestro pueblo ni contra las tradiciones de nuestros padres (de los antepasados), desde Jerusalén fui entregado preso en manos de los Romanos,

18 los cuales, cuando me interrogaron, quisieron ponerme en libertad, pues no encontraron causa para condenarme a muerte.
19 "Pero cuando los Judíos se opusieron, me vi obligado a apelar al César (Nerón), pero no porque tuviera acusación alguna contra mi pueblo (mi nación).

20 Por tanto, por esta razón he pedido verlos y hablar con ustedes, porque por causa de la esperanza de Israel llevo esta cadena."
21 Y ellos le dijeron: "Nosotros no hemos recibido cartas de Judea sobre ti, ni ha venido aquí ninguno de los hermanos que haya informado o hablado algo malo acerca de ti.

22 Pero deseamos oír por ti mismo lo que enseñas, porque lo que sabemos de esta secta es que en todas partes se habla contra ella."

Pablo Predica en Roma

23 Y habiéndole fijado un día, vinieron en gran número adonde él se alojaba. Desde la mañana hasta la tarde les explicaba testificando fielmente sobre el reino de Dios, procurando persuadirlos acerca de Jesús, tanto por la Ley de Moisés como por los Profetas.24 Algunos eran persuadidos con lo que se decía, pero otros no creían.25 Al no estar de acuerdo entre sí, comenzaron a marcharse después de que Pablo dijo una última palabra: "Bien habló el Espíritu Santo a sus padres por medio de Isaías el profeta,26 diciendo: 'Ve a este pueblo y di: "Al oir oiran, y no entenderan; y viendo veran, y no percibiran;

27 porque el corazon de este pueblo se ha vuelto insensible, y con dificultad oyen con sus oidos; y sus ojos han cerrado; de otro modo verian con los ojos, y oirian con los oidos, y entenderian con el corazon, y se convertirian, y Yo los sanaria.'"
28 "Sepan, por tanto, que esta salvación de Dios ha sido enviada a los Gentiles. Ellos sí oirán."

29 Cuando hubo dicho esto, los Judíos se fueron, teniendo gran discusión entre sí.
30  Pablo se quedó por dos años enteros en la habitación que alquilaba, y recibía a todos los que iban a verlo,31 predicando el reino de Dios y enseñando todo lo concerniente al Señor Jesucristo con toda libertad, sin estorbo.

Paul on Malta

1 After we had safely reached shore,t we learned that the island was called Malta.ss2 The local inhabitantst showed us extraordinaryt kindness, for they built a fire and welcomed us all because it had started to raint and was cold.3 When Paul had gathered a bundle of brushwoodt and was putting it on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened itself on his hand.4 When the local peoplet saw the creature hanging from Paul’st hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer! Although he has escaped from the sea, Justice herselft has not allowed him to live!”s5 However,t Pault shookt the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm.

6 But they were expecting that he was going to swell upt or suddenly drop dead. So after they had waitedt a long time and had seent nothing unusual happent to him, they changed their mindst and said he was a god.s
7 Now in the region around that placet were fields belonging to the chief officialt of the island, named Publius, who welcomed us and entertained us hospitably as guests for three days.8 The fathert of Publius lay sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see himt and after praying, placedt his hands on him and healeds him.9 After this had happened, many of the people on the island who were sickt also came and were healed.s

10 They also bestowed many honors,t and when we were preparing to sail,t they gavet us all the supplies we needed.s

Paul Finally Reaches Rome

11 After three months we put out to seat in an Alexandrian ship that had wintered at the island and had the “Heavenly Twins”ts as its figurehead.t12 We put int at Syracuses and stayed there three days.13 From there we cast offs and arrived at Rhegium,s and after one day a south wind sprang upt and on the second day we came to Puteoli.s14 Theret we foundt some brotherss and were invited to stay with them seven days. And in this way we came to Rome.s15 The brothers from there,s when they heard about us, came as far as the Forum of Appiuss and Three Tavernss to meet us. When he saw them,t Paul thanked God and took courage.

16 When we entered Rome, Paul was allowed to livets by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him.

Paul Addresses the Jewish Community in Rome

17 After three dayst Pault called the local Jewish leaderst together. When they had assembled, he said to them, “Brothers,t although I had donet nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors,ts from Jerusalems I was handed over as a prisoner to the Romans.t18 Whent they had heard my case,t they wanted to release me,s because there was no basis for a death sentencet against me.19 But when the Jews objected,t I was forced to appeal to Caesart – not that I had some charge to bringt against my own people.t20 So for this reason I have asked to see you and speak with you, for I am bound with this chain because of the hope of Israel.”s21 They replied,t “We have received no letters from Judea about you, nor have any of the brothers come from theret and reported or said anything bad about you.

22 But we would like to hear from you what you think, for regarding this sect we knowt that peoplet everywhere speak againstt it.”
23 They sett a day to meet with him,t and they came to him where he was stayingt in even greater numbers.t From morning until evening he explained thingst to them,t testifyingt about the kingdom of Gods and trying to convincet them about Jesus from both the law of Moses and the prophets.24 Some were convincedt by what he said,t but others refuseds to believe.25 So they began to leave,t unable to agree among themselves, after Paul made one last statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly to your ancestorst through the prophet Isaiah

26 when he said,
‘Go to this people and say,
“You will keep on hearing,tbut will never understand,
and you will keep on looking,tbut will never perceive.

27 For the heart of this people has become dull,ts
and their ears are hard of hearing,t
and they have closed their eyes,
so that they would not see with their eyes
and hear with their ears
and understand with their heart
and turn,sand I would heal them.”’s

28 “Therefore be advisedt that this salvation from Godt has been sent to the Gentiles;s theyt will listen!”ss
30 Pault livedt there two whole years in his own rented quarterst and welcomedt all who came to him,

31 proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christt with complete boldnesst and without restriction.s
