五

1 ところが、中にはこんな事件もありました。　アナニヤという人が、妻サッピラといっしょに財産を売り払いました。　2 しかしアナニヤは、代金の一部を手もとに残しておきながら、すまして、「これで全額です」と言って、使徒たちに差し出したのです。　妻サッピラと示し合わせた上のことでした。
3 しかし、ペテロはそれを見抜いて、彼を責めました。　「アナニヤよ。　悪魔に心を奪われたのかっ！　これで全額ですと言った時、おまえは、ほかのだれでもない、聖霊様ご自身にうそをついたのだ。　4 おまえの財産は、売ろうと売るまいと、おまえのものであることに変わりはない。　たとい売ったとしても、その代金をどれぐらい人に施すかも全く自由だ。　なのに、どうしてこんなことをしたっ！　わかっているのか。　おまえは私たちにじゃなく、神様にうそをついたのだぞ。」
5 このことばを聞くと、アナニヤはばたりと床に倒れ、あっという間に死んでしまったのです。　これを見た人々は、恐ろしさのあまり、ちぢみ上がりました。　6 やがて青年たちが、死体を布でおおい、外に運び出して葬りました。
7 それから三時間ほどあとでしょうか。　アナニヤの妻が、何事も知らずにやって来ました。　8 ペテロは尋ねました。　「あなたがたが売った土地の代金は、これで全額ですか。」
「はい、そうです。」
9 「よくまあ、夫婦そろって大それたことを考えたものだ。　聖霊様をだまそうとはな。　見ろ。　おまえの夫を葬った青年たちが、門のすぐそばまで来ている。　おまえも運び出してもらうがいい。」
10 ペテロが言い終わるか終わらないかのうちに、サッピラは床に倒れ、息が絶えました。　ちょうどそこへ、青年たちが入って来ました。　確かに死んでいるのを見届けると、その足で運び出し、夫のそばに葬りました。　11 教会全体と、この出来事を聞いたすべての人が、言い知れない恐怖にとらわれたことは、言うまでもありません。
12 一方、使徒たちは、神殿の「ソロモンの廊」で、定期的に集会を開いていました。　目をみはるような奇蹟も、たくさん行なわれました。　13 ほかの人々は、その仲間入りはしないまでも、みな使徒たちを心から尊敬していました。　14 こうして、男女を問わず、主を信じる人がますます増えていきました。　15 人々はついに、病人をふとんごと通りへかつぎ出し、「せめて、ペテロ様の影だけでもかかれば......」と願うほどになりました。　16 また、エルサレム付近の町々からも、大ぜいの人が、病人や悪霊に取りつかれた人たちを連れて来ました。　その人たちは一人残らず、すっかりよくなりました。
また逮捕された使徒
17 これを知った、大祭司とその一族であるサドカイ派の人たちはみな、激しいねたみにかられ、　18 うむを言わさず使徒たちを逮捕し、留置場に放り込んでしまいました。
19 しかし、夜、主の使いが来て、留置場の戸を開け、使徒たちを外に連れ出して言いました。　20 「さあ宮へ行き、このいのちの教えを、大胆に語りなさい。」
21 言われたとおり、使徒たちは夜明けごろ宮へ行き、すぐに説教を始めました。　一方、大祭司とその取り巻き連中は、宮に来て、ユダヤの最高議会と長老全員を召集しました。　さあ、いよいよ尋問を始めようと、人をやり、使徒たちを引き出して来させることになりました。　22 ところが、警備員が留置場をのぞいてみると、どうしたことでしょう。　使徒たちの影も形もありません。　びっくりして議会に取って返し、　23 「もぬけのからです。　かぎはちゃんとかかっていたし、外には見張りもおりましたのに」と報告しました。
24 これを聞いた警備隊長や祭司長たちは、さっぱり訳がわかりません。　いったい何事がもち上がるのだろうかと、あわてふためくばかりです。　25 その時、一人の人が駆けつけて、留置場にいるはずの人たちが、宮で説教していると知らせました。
26-27 警備隊長は役人たちを伴って出かけ、使徒たちを連行して来ましたが、何一つ、手荒なことはしませんでした。　下手に手出しでもしようものなら、かえって自分たちの身が危ういと思ったからです。　こうして、ようやく使徒たちが議会に引き出されました。
28 まず、大祭司が問いただしました。　「二度とイエスのことを説教してはならないと、あれほどきつく申し渡したではないか。　それなのに、なんだ。　エルサレム中に教えを広めている。　おまえたちの魂胆はわかっている。　あいつを殺した責任を、私たちにかぶせようというのだ。」
29 しかし、ペテロと使徒たちは答えました。　「人間よりも、神様に従うべきです。　30 ご先祖の神様は、あなたがたが十字架で処刑したイエス様を、復活させてくださいました。　31 神様は、大きな力でこの方を引き上げ、神の王子、また救い主となさったのです。　それもみな、罪を悔い改め赦していただく機会を、イスラエルの人々に与えるためでした。　32 私たちは、実にこのことの証人です。　神様に従うすべての人に与えられる聖霊様もまた、このことの証人なのです。」
33 これを聞いた議員たちは烈火のごとく怒り、使徒たちを殺そうと決めました。　34 ところがこの時、一人の議員が立ち上がりました。　パリサイ派（信徒で、特におきてを守ることに熱心なユダヤ教の一派）のガマリエルで、法律の専門家として名が通っている人物です。　彼は、意見を述べる間、使徒たちを議会から連れ出すことを要求しました。
35 それから、一同に言いました。　「イスラエルの皆さん。　あの人たちの扱い方には、よくよく注意してください。　36 しばらく前のことになりますが、チゥダという男の事件を覚えておいででしょうか。　この男が、いかにも偉大な人物のように見せかけたため、四百人ほどの者が仲間になりましたね。　ところが結局、当の本人は殺され、一味も、散り散りばらばらになりました。
37 それから、人口調査の時にも、ガリラヤ人のユダという男が民衆をそそのかして反乱を起こしました。　しかし、やはり、この男も死に、仲間も散らされました。
38 それで、提案ですが、あの人たちを放っておいてはどうでしょう。　もし彼らの教えや行動が、ただのでっち上げなら、遅からずくつがえされてしまうでしょう。　39 しかし、もし神様の力によるものだったら、いかなる人といえども阻止はできません。　いや、そればかりか、まかりまちがえば、神様に敵対することにもなりかねません。」
40 説得は効を奏しました。　一同は、ガマリエルの忠告に従うことにしたのです。　そこで、使徒たちをもう一度呼び入れ、むち打ちにし、二度とイエスの名を口にしてはならないと命じてから釈放しました。　41 使徒たちは、神様の名のために、はずかしめを受けたことを、むしろ喜びながら、議会をあとにしました。　42 そして毎日、宮や家家で教え、イエスこそキリストだと宣べ伝えました。

Acts 5

1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,2 and kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thy heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land?4 While it remained, did it not remain thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thy power? How is it that thou hast conceived this thing in thy heart? thou has not lied unto men, but unto God.5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down and gave up the ghost: and great fear came upon all that heard it.6 And the young men arose and wrapped him round, and they carried him out and buried him.7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much. And she said, Yea, for so much.9 But Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to try the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them that have buried thy husband are at the door, and they shall carry thee out.10 And she fell down immediately at his feet, and gave up the ghost: and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her by her husband.11 And great fear came upon the whole church, and upon all that heard these things.12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch.13 But of the rest durst no man join himself to them: howbeit the people magnified them;14 and believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women;15 insomuch that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that, as Peter came by, at the least his shadow might overshadow some one of them.16 And there also came together the multitudes from the cities round about Jerusalem, bring sick folk, and them that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.17 But the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy,18 and laid hands on the apostles, and put them in public ward.19 But an angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them out, and said,20 Go ye, and stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this Life.21 And when they heard this, they entered into the temple about daybreak, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison-house to have them brought.22 But the officers that came found them not in the prison; and they returned, and told,23 saying, The prison-house we found shut in all safety, and the keepers standing at the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within.24 Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were much perplexed concerning them whereunto this would grow.25 And there came one and told them, Behold, the men whom ye put in the prison are in the temple standing and teaching the people.26 Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them, but without violence; for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned.27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them,28 saying, We strictly charged you not to teach in this name: and behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.29 But Peter and the apostles answered and said, We must obey God rather than men.30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew, hanging him on a tree.31 Him did God exalt with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins.32 And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God hath given to them that obey him.33 But they, when they heard this, were cut to the heart, and minded to slay them.34 But there stood up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in honor of all the people, and commanded to put the men forth a little while.35 And he said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves as touching these men, what ye are about to do.36 For before these days rose up Theudas, giving himself out to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were dispersed, and came to nought.37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the enrolment, and drew away some of the people after him: he also perished; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered abroad.38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will be overthrown:39 but if it is of God, ye will not be able to overthrow them; lest haply ye be found even to be fighting against God.40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles unto them, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.41 They therefore departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the Name.42 And every day, in the temple and at home, they ceased not to teach and to preach Jesus as the Christ.
