Ananías y Safira

1  Había cierto hombre llamado Ananías quien, junto con su esposa, Safira, vendió una propiedad; 2  y llevó sólo una parte del dinero a los apóstoles pero afirmó que era la suma total de la venta. Con el consentimiento de su esposa, se quedó con el resto.

3 Entonces Pedro le dijo: «Ananías, ¿por qué has permitido que Satanás llenara tu corazón? Le mentiste al Espíritu Santo y te quedaste con una parte del dinero. 4 La decisión de vender o no la propiedad fue tuya. Y, después de venderla, el dinero también era tuyo para regalarlo o no. ¿Cómo pudiste hacer algo así? ¡No nos mentiste a nosotros sino a Dios!».

5 En cuanto Ananías oyó estas palabras, cayó al suelo y murió. Todos los que se enteraron de lo sucedido quedaron aterrados. 6 Después unos muchachos se levantaron, lo envolvieron en una sábana, lo sacaron y lo enterraron.

7 Como tres horas más tarde, entró su esposa sin saber lo que había pasado.

8 Pedro le preguntó:
—¿Fue este todo el dinero que tú y tu esposo recibieron por la venta de su terreno?
—Sí —contestó ella—, ese fue el precio.

9 Y Pedro le dijo:
—¿Cómo pudieron ustedes dos siquiera pensar en conspirar para poner a prueba al Espíritu del Señor de esta manera? Los jóvenes que enterraron a tu esposo están justo afuera de la puerta, ellos también te sacarán cargando a ti.

10 Al instante, ella cayó al suelo y murió. Cuando los jóvenes entraron y vieron que estaba muerta, la sacaron y la enterraron al lado de su esposo. 11 Gran temor se apoderó de toda la iglesia y de todos los que oyeron lo que había sucedido.

Los apóstoles sanan a muchos

12 Los apóstoles hacían muchas señales milagrosas y maravillas entre la gente. Y todos los creyentes se reunían con frecuencia en el templo, en el área conocida como el Pórtico de Salomón; 13 pero nadie más se atrevía a unirse a ellos, aunque toda la gente los tenía en alta estima. 14 Sin embargo, cada vez más personas —multitudes de hombres y mujeres— creían y se acercaban al Señor. 15 Como resultado del trabajo de los apóstoles, la gente sacaba a los enfermos a las calles en camas y camillas para que la sombra de Pedro cayera sobre algunos de ellos cuando él pasaba. 16 Multitudes llegaban desde las aldeas que rodeaban a Jerusalén y llevaban a sus enfermos y a los que estaban poseídos por espíritus malignos,t y todos eran sanados.

Los apóstoles enfrentan oposición

17 El sumo sacerdote y sus funcionarios, que eran saduceos, se llenaron de envidia. 18 Arrestaron a los apóstoles y los metieron en la cárcel pública; 19 pero un ángel del Señor llegó de noche, abrió las puertas de la cárcel y los sacó. Luego les dijo: 20 «¡Vayan al templo y denle a la gente este mensaje de vida!».

21 Así que, al amanecer, los apóstoles entraron en el templo como se les había dicho, y comenzaron a enseñar de inmediato.
Cuando llegaron el sumo sacerdote y sus funcionarios, convocaron al Concilio Supremo,t es decir, a toda la asamblea de los ancianos de Israel. Luego mandaron a sacar a los apóstoles de la cárcel para llevarlos a juicio; 22 pero cuando los guardias del templo llegaron a la cárcel, los hombres ya no estaban. Entonces regresaron al Concilio y dieron el siguiente informe: 23 «La cárcel estaba bien cerrada, los guardias estaban afuera en sus puestos, pero cuando abrimos las puertas, ¡no había nadie!».

24 Cuando el capitán de la guardia del templo y los sacerdotes principales oyeron esto, quedaron perplejos y se preguntaban en qué iba a terminar todo el asunto. 25 Entonces alguien llegó con noticias sorprendentes: «¡Los hombres que ustedes metieron en la cárcel están en el templo enseñando a la gente!».

26 El capitán fue con los guardias del templo y arrestó a los apóstoles, pero sin violencia, porque tenían miedo de que la gente los apedreara. 27 Después llevaron a los apóstoles ante el Concilio Supremo, donde los confrontó el sumo sacerdote.

28 —¿Acaso no les dijimos que no enseñaran nunca más en nombre de ese hombre? —les reclamó—. En lugar de eso, ustedes han llenado a toda Jerusalén con la enseñanza acerca de él, ¡y quieren hacernos responsables de su muerte!

29 Pero Pedro y los apóstoles respondieron:
—Nosotros tenemos que obedecer a Dios antes que a cualquier autoridad humana. 30 El Dios de nuestros antepasados levantó a Jesús de los muertos después de que ustedes lo mataron colgándolo en una cruz.t 31 Luego Dios lo puso en el lugar de honor, a su derecha, como Príncipe y Salvador. Lo hizo para que el pueblo de Israel se arrepintiera de sus pecados y fuera perdonado. 32 Nosotros somos testigos de estas cosas y también lo es el Espíritu Santo, dado por Dios a todos los que lo obedecen.

33 Al oír esto, el Concilio Supremo se enfureció y decidió matarlos; 34 pero uno de los miembros, un fariseo llamado Gamaliel, experto en la ley religiosa y respetado por toda la gente, se puso de pie y ordenó que sacaran de la sala del Concilio a los apóstoles por un momento. 35 Entonces les dijo a sus colegas: «Hombres de Israel, ¡tengan cuidado con lo que piensan hacerles a estos hombres! 36 Hace algún tiempo, hubo un tal Teudas, quien fingía ser alguien importante. Unas cuatrocientas personas se le unieron, pero a él lo mataron y todos sus seguidores se fueron cada cual por su camino. Todo el movimiento se redujo a nada. 37 Después de él, en el tiempo en que se llevó a cabo el censo, apareció un tal Judas de Galilea. Logró que gente lo siguiera, pero a él también lo mataron, y todos sus seguidores se dispersaron.

38 »Así que mi consejo es que dejen a esos hombres en paz. Pónganlos en libertad. Si ellos están planeando y actuando por sí solos, pronto su movimiento caerá; 39 pero si es de Dios, ustedes no podrán detenerlos. ¡Tal vez hasta se encuentren peleando contra Dios!».

40 Los otros miembros aceptaron su consejo. Llamaron a los apóstoles y mandaron que los azotaran. Luego les ordenaron que nunca más hablaran en el nombre de Jesús y los pusieron en libertad.

41 Los apóstoles salieron del Concilio Supremo con alegría, porque Dios los había considerado dignos de sufrir deshonra por el nombre de Jesús.t 42 Y cada día, en el templo y casa por casa, seguían enseñando y predicando este mensaje: «Jesús es el Mesías».

ACTS 5

Peter Condemns //Ananias and Sapphira

1 Ananias and his wife Sapphira also sold a piece of property.

2 But they agreed to cheat and keep some of the money for themselves.
So when Ananias took the rest of the money to the apostles, 3 Peter said, “Why has Satan made you keep back some of the money from the sale of the property? Why have you lied to the Holy Spirit?

4 The property was yours before you sold it, and even after you sold it, the money was still yours. What made you do such a thing? You didn't lie to people. You lied to God!”
5  t As soon as Ananias heard this, he dropped dead, and everyone who heard about it was frightened.

6 Some young men came in and wrapped up his body. Then they took it out and buried it.
7 Three hours later Sapphira came in, but she did not know what had happened to her husband.

8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, did you sell the property for this amount?”
“Yes,” she answered, “that's the amount.”
9 Then Peter said, “Why did the two of you agree to test the Lord's Spirit? The men who buried Ananias are by the door, and they will carry you out!”

10 At once she fell at Peter's feet and died.
When the young men came back in, they found Sapphira lying there dead. So they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

11 The church members were afraid, and so was everyone else who heard what had happened.

Peter's Unusual Power

13 No one outside their group dared join them, even though everyone liked them very much.
14 Many men and women started having faith in the Lord. 15 Then sick people were brought out to the road and placed on mats. It was hoped that Peter would walk by, and his shadow would fall on them and heal them.

16 A lot of people living in the towns near Jerusalem brought those who were sick or troubled by evil spirits, and they were all healed.

Trouble for the Apostles

21 So they went into the temple before sunrise and started teaching.
The high priest and his men called together their council, which included all of Israel's leaders. Then they ordered the apostles to be brought to them from the jail. 22 The temple police who were sent to the jail did not find the apostles. They returned and said, 23 “We found the jail locked tight and the guards standing at the doors. But when we opened the doors and went in, we didn't find anyone there.”

24 The captain of the temple police and the chief priests listened to their report, but they did not know what to think about it.
25 Just then someone came in and said, “Now those men you put in jail are in the temple, teaching the people!”

26 The captain went with some of the temple police and brought the apostles back. But they did not use force. They were afraid that the people might start throwing stones at them.
27 When the apostles were brought before the council, the high priest said to them,

28 t “We told you plainly not to teach in the name of Jesus. But look what you have done! You have been teaching all over Jerusalem, and you are trying to blame us for his death.”

29 Peter and the apostles replied:
We don't obey people. We obey God. 30 You killed Jesus by nailing him to a cross. But the God our ancestors worshiped raised him to life 31 and made him our Leader and Savior. Then God gave him a place at his right side, t so that the people of Israel would turn back to him and be forgiven.

32 We are here to tell you about all this, and so is the Holy Spirit, who is God's gift to everyone who obeys God.
33 When the council members heard this, they became so angry they wanted to kill the apostles. 34 But one of the members was the Pharisee Gamaliel, a highly respected teacher. He ordered the apostles to be taken out of the room for a little while.

35 Then he said to the council:
Men of Israel, be careful what you do with these men.

36 Not long ago Theudas claimed to be someone important, and about 400 men joined him. But he was killed, and all his followers were scattered. That was the end of that.

37 Later, when the people of our nation were being counted, Judas from Galilee showed up. A lot of people followed him, but he was killed, and all his followers were scattered.
38 So I advise you to stay away from these men. Leave them alone. If what they are planning is something of their own doing, it will fail.

39 t But if God is behind it, you cannot stop it anyway, unless you want to fight against God.
The council members agreed with what he said,

40 and they called the apostles back in. They had them beaten with a whip and warned them not to speak in the name of Jesus. Then they let them go.
41 The apostles left the council and were happy, because God had considered them worthy to suffer for the sake of Jesus. 42 Every day they spent time in the temple and in one home after another. They never stopped teaching and telling the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.
