Ananías y Safira

1 Pero un hombre que se llamaba Ananías, junto con Safira, su mujer, vendió un terreno2 y, con el consentimiento de ella, sustrajo algo del dinero que recibió; así que llevó sólo una parte y la entregó a los apóstoles.3 Entonces Pedro le dijo: «Ananías, ¿por qué le permitiste a Satanás que entrara en ti para mentirle al Espíritu Santo y sustraer parte de tu dinero?4 ¿Acaso el terreno no era tuyo? Y, si lo vendías, ¿acaso no era tuyo el dinero? ¿Por qué decidiste hacer esto? No les has mentido a los hombres, sino a Dios.»5 Al oír Ananías estas palabras, cayó muerto. Y a todos los que se enteraron les entró mucho miedo.6 Entonces los jóvenes se levantaron, lo envolvieron, lo sacaron y lo sepultaron.

7 Como tres horas más tarde, entró su mujer sin saber lo que había sucedido.8 Y Pedro le dijo: «Dime: ¿vendieron ustedes el terreno en ese precio?» Y ella respondió: «Sí, en ese precio.»9 Pedro le dijo entonces: «¿Por qué se pusieron de acuerdo para poner a prueba al Espíritu del Señor? ¡Mira!, aquí vienen los que fueron a sepultar a tu marido, y ellos te sacarán también a ti.»10 Al instante, ella cayó muerta a los pies de Pedro, y cuando entraron los jóvenes y la hallaron muerta, la sacaron y la sepultaron junto a su marido.11 Esto hizo que toda la iglesia y todos los que supieron esto se llenaran de mucho miedo.

Señales y maravillas en abundancia

12 Dios hacía muchas señales y prodigios entre el pueblo por medio de los apóstoles, y todos ellos se reunían sin falta en el pórtico de Salomón.13 Ninguno del pueblo se atrevía a juntarse con ellos, aunque el pueblo los elogiaba mucho.14 Los hombres y mujeres que creían en el Señor iban aumentando en número,15 y en sus camas y lechos sacaban a los enfermos a la calle, para que al pasar Pedro por lo menos su sombra cayera sobre alguno de ellos.16 Aun de las ciudades vecinas venían muchos a Jerusalén, y traían a sus enfermos y a los atormentados por espíritus inmundos, y todos eran sanados.

Pedro y Juan son perseguidos

17 El sumo sacerdote y todos los que estaban de su parte, es decir, los de la secta de los saduceos, reaccionaron llenos de celos18 y aprehendieron a los apóstoles y los echaron a la cárcel del pueblo.19 Pero en la noche un ángel del Señor llegó y abrió las puertas de la cárcel. Cuando ellos salieron, el ángel les dijo:20 «Vayan al templo y anuncien al pueblo todas las enseñanzas acerca de esta vida.»

21 Luego de oír esto, entraron en el templo por la mañana y se pusieron a enseñar.
Mientras tanto, el sumo sacerdote y los que estaban de su parte se reunieron para convocar al concilio y a todos los ancianos del pueblo de Israel, y al mismo tiempo mandaron traer de la cárcel a los apóstoles;22 pero como al llegar los alguaciles no los encontraron, regresaron y dijeron:23 «Cuando llegamos a la cárcel, ésta tenía todos los candados puestos y los guardias estaban afuera, frente a las puertas; pero al abrir la cárcel, vimos que allí adentro no había nadie.»24 Al oír esto, el sumo sacerdote, el jefe de la guardia del templo y los principales sacerdotes no lograban entender en qué pararía todo esto.25 Pero llegó otro y les dijo: «Escuchen: los hombres que ustedes metieron a la cárcel, están ahora en el templo, impartiendo enseñanzas al pueblo.»26 Entonces el jefe de la guardia se fue con los alguaciles y los aprehendió, aunque sin violencia, porque temían que el pueblo los apedreara.

27 Cuando los llevaron y los presentaron ante el concilio, el sumo sacerdote les dijo:28 «¿Acaso no les dimos órdenes estrictas de no enseñar en ese nombre? Ahora han llenado a Jerusalén de su doctrina, y quieren culparnos de la muerte de ese hombre.»t29 Pedro y los apóstoles respondieron: «Es necesario obedecer a Dios antes que a los hombres.30 El Dios de nuestros antepasados resucitó a Jesús, el mismo al que ustedes mataron y colgaron de un madero.31 Pero Dios, por su poder, lo ha exaltado y sentado a su derecha como Príncipe y Salvador, dando a Israel la oportunidad de arrepentirse y de que sean perdonados sus pecados.32 De esto somos testigos nosotros, y también el Espíritu Santo, que Dios ha dado a quienes lo obedecen.»

33 Al oír esto, ellos se enfurecieron tanto que querían matarlos.34 Entonces Gamaliel, un fariseo que era doctor de la ley y a quien todo el pueblo respetaba, se levantó ante el concilio y ordenó que sacaran por un momento a los apóstoles;35 luego dijo: «Varones israelitas, piensen bien en lo que van a hacer con estos hombres.36 Hace ya algún tiempo, se levantó Teudas, quien se jactaba de ser alguien, y logró que se le uniera un grupo como de cuatrocientos hombres; pero lo mataron, y todos los que lo seguían fueron dispersados y exterminados.37 Después, cuando se hizo el censo, se levantó Judas el galileo y logró que muchos del pueblo lo siguieran. Pero también lo mataron, y todos los que lo seguían fueron dispersados.38 Por eso les digo ahora: Olvídense de estos hombres. Déjenlos. Porque si esto que hacen es de carácter humano, se desvanecerá;

39 pero si es de Dios, no lo podrán destruir. ¡No vaya a ser que ustedes se encuentren luchando contra Dios!»
Todos estuvieron de acuerdo con él,40 así que llamaron a los apóstoles y, después de azotarlos, les advirtieron que no siguieran hablando en el nombre de Jesús y los pusieron en libertad.41 Los apóstoles salieron del concilio felices de haber sido dignos de sufrir por causa del Nombre.42 Y todos los días, no dejaban de enseñar y de anunciar en el templo y por las casas las buenas noticias acerca de Cristo Jesús.

ACTS 5

Peter Condemns //Ananias and Sapphira

1 Ananias and his wife Sapphira also sold a piece of property.

2 But they agreed to cheat and keep some of the money for themselves.
So when Ananias took the rest of the money to the apostles, 3 Peter said, “Why has Satan made you keep back some of the money from the sale of the property? Why have you lied to the Holy Spirit?

4 The property was yours before you sold it, and even after you sold it, the money was still yours. What made you do such a thing? You didn't lie to people. You lied to God!”
5  t As soon as Ananias heard this, he dropped dead, and everyone who heard about it was frightened.

6 Some young men came in and wrapped up his body. Then they took it out and buried it.
7 Three hours later Sapphira came in, but she did not know what had happened to her husband.

8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, did you sell the property for this amount?”
“Yes,” she answered, “that's the amount.”
9 Then Peter said, “Why did the two of you agree to test the Lord's Spirit? The men who buried Ananias are by the door, and they will carry you out!”

10 At once she fell at Peter's feet and died.
When the young men came back in, they found Sapphira lying there dead. So they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

11 The church members were afraid, and so was everyone else who heard what had happened.

Peter's Unusual Power

13 No one outside their group dared join them, even though everyone liked them very much.
14 Many men and women started having faith in the Lord. 15 Then sick people were brought out to the road and placed on mats. It was hoped that Peter would walk by, and his shadow would fall on them and heal them.

16 A lot of people living in the towns near Jerusalem brought those who were sick or troubled by evil spirits, and they were all healed.

Trouble for the Apostles

21 So they went into the temple before sunrise and started teaching.
The high priest and his men called together their council, which included all of Israel's leaders. Then they ordered the apostles to be brought to them from the jail. 22 The temple police who were sent to the jail did not find the apostles. They returned and said, 23 “We found the jail locked tight and the guards standing at the doors. But when we opened the doors and went in, we didn't find anyone there.”

24 The captain of the temple police and the chief priests listened to their report, but they did not know what to think about it.
25 Just then someone came in and said, “Now those men you put in jail are in the temple, teaching the people!”

26 The captain went with some of the temple police and brought the apostles back. But they did not use force. They were afraid that the people might start throwing stones at them.
27 When the apostles were brought before the council, the high priest said to them,

28 t “We told you plainly not to teach in the name of Jesus. But look what you have done! You have been teaching all over Jerusalem, and you are trying to blame us for his death.”

29 Peter and the apostles replied:
We don't obey people. We obey God. 30 You killed Jesus by nailing him to a cross. But the God our ancestors worshiped raised him to life 31 and made him our Leader and Savior. Then God gave him a place at his right side, t so that the people of Israel would turn back to him and be forgiven.

32 We are here to tell you about all this, and so is the Holy Spirit, who is God's gift to everyone who obeys God.
33 When the council members heard this, they became so angry they wanted to kill the apostles. 34 But one of the members was the Pharisee Gamaliel, a highly respected teacher. He ordered the apostles to be taken out of the room for a little while.

35 Then he said to the council:
Men of Israel, be careful what you do with these men.

36 Not long ago Theudas claimed to be someone important, and about 400 men joined him. But he was killed, and all his followers were scattered. That was the end of that.

37 Later, when the people of our nation were being counted, Judas from Galilee showed up. A lot of people followed him, but he was killed, and all his followers were scattered.
38 So I advise you to stay away from these men. Leave them alone. If what they are planning is something of their own doing, it will fail.

39 t But if God is behind it, you cannot stop it anyway, unless you want to fight against God.
The council members agreed with what he said,

40 and they called the apostles back in. They had them beaten with a whip and warned them not to speak in the name of Jesus. Then they let them go.
41 The apostles left the council and were happy, because God had considered them worthy to suffer for the sake of Jesus. 42 Every day they spent time in the temple and in one home after another. They never stopped teaching and telling the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.
