Ananias och Safira

1 En man som hette Ananias sålde tillsammans med sin hustru Safira en egendom.2 Med sin hustrus vetskap tog han undan något av köpesumman och bar fram en del och lade för apostlarnas fötter.3 Då sade Petrus: "Ananias, varför har Satan uppfyllt ditt hjärta, så att du ljög mot den helige Ande och tog undan en del av pengarna för jorden?4 Var inte egendomen din så länge du hade den kvar? Och när den var såld, var inte pengarna dina? Varför har du i ditt hjärta bestämt dig för att göra något sådant? Du har ljugit, inte bara för människor utan för Gud."5 När Ananias hörde de orden föll han ner och dog, och stor fruktan kom över alla som hörde det.6 De yngre männen kom och svepte honom, bar bort och begravde honom.7 Omkring tre timmar senare kom hans hustru in utan att veta vad som hade hänt.8 Petrus frågade henne: "Säg mig, sålde ni jorden för det beloppet?" Hon svarade: "Ja, för så mycket."9 Petrus sade till henne: "Varför har ni kommit överens om att fresta Herrens Ande? Se, de män som har begravt din man står vid dörren, och de skall också bära bort dig."10 Och plötsligt föll hon ner död vid hans fötter. När de unga männen kom in fann de henne död, och de bar bort och begravde henne bredvid hennes man.11 Och stor fruktan kom över hela församlingen och över alla andra som hörde detta.

Apostlarna gör under

12 Många tecken och under skedde bland folket genom apostlarnas händer. Och de var alla tillsammans i Salomos pelarhall.13 Av de andra vågade ingen sluta sig till dem, men folket uppskattade dem.14 Och ännu fler kom till tro på Herren, en skara av både män och kvinnor.15 Ja, man bar till och med ut de sjuka på gatorna och lade dem på bäddar och bårar, för att åtminstone Petrus skugga skulle falla på någon av dem, när han gick förbi.16 Det kom också en stor skara från städerna runt omkring Jerusalem, och de förde med sig sjuka och sådana som plågades av orena andar, och alla blev botade.

Apostlarna inför Stora rådet

17 Översteprästen och alla hans anhängare, det vill säga sadduceernas parti,t uppfylldes av avund18 och grep apostlarna och satte dem i fängelse.19 Men en Herrens ängel öppnade på natten fängelsets portar och förde ut dem och sade:20 "Gå och ställ er i templet och förkunna för folket allt som hör till detta liv."21 När de hörde det, gick de tidigt på morgonen till templet och undervisade. Då översteprästen och hans anhängare kom dit, kallade de samman Stora rådet, Israels folks hela äldsteråd, och skickade bud till fängelset att apostlarna skulle hämtas.22 Men när tjänarna kom fann de dem inte i fängelset. De vände tillbaka och rapporterade:23 "Vi såg att fängelset var ordentligt låst och att vakterna stod vid portarna, men då vi öppnade fann vi ingen därinne."24 När ledaren för tempelvakten tillsammans med översteprästerna fick höra det, blev de villrådiga och undrade vad som kunde ha hänt.25 Men då kom någon och sade till dem: "Männen som ni satte i fängelse är i templet och står där och undervisar folket."26 Ledaren för tempelvakten gick då tillsammans med tjänarna och förde bort dem utan att bruka våld, eftersom de var rädda för att bli stenade av folket.27 När de nu fördes bort, ställdes de inför Stora rådet, och översteprästen förhörde dem28 och sade: "Förbjöd vi er inte strängt att undervisa i det namnet? Och nu har ni fyllt Jerusalem med er lära och vill att den mannens blod skall komma över oss."29 Då svarade Petrus och apostlarna: "Man måste lyda Gud mer än människor.30 Våra fäders Gud har uppväckt Jesus, som ni hängde upp på trä och dödade.31 Honom har Gud med sin högra hand upphöjt som hövding och frälsare, för att ge omvändelse och syndernas förlåtelse åt Israel.32 Vi är vittnen till detta, vi och den helige Ande, som Gud har gett åt dem som lyder honom."33 När rådsmedlemmarna hörde detta, blev de ursinniga och ville döda dem.34 Men en farisé i Stora rådet, en laglärare som hette Gamalielt och som var aktad av allt folket, reste sig och begärde att man för en kort stund skulle föra ut männen.35 Sedan sade han till dem: "Israeliter, tänk er för, vad ni är på väg att göra med dessa män.36 För en tid sedan uppträdde Teudas och gav sig ut för att vara någott, och omkring fyra hundra män slöt sig till honom. Men han blev avrättad, och alla som trodde på honom skingrades och det blev ingenting av det hela.37 Efter honom, vid tiden för skattskrivningen, uppträdde Judas från Galileen. Han fick folk att göra uppror och följa honom. Men också han omkom, och alla som trodde på honom skingrades.38 Och nu säger jag er: Håll er borta från dessa män och låt dem gå. Ty om detta skulle vara ett påhitt eller ett verk av människor, kommer det att rinna ut i sanden.39 Men om det är av Gud, kan ni inte slå ner dem. Kanske visar det sig att ni strider mot Gud."
De lät sig övertygas,40 kallade in apostlarna, lät piska dem och förbjöd dem att tala i Jesu namn. Sedan släpptes de fria.41 Och apostlarna gick ut från Stora rådet, glada över att de hade ansetts värdiga att lida smälek för Namnets skull.42 Varje dag undervisade de i templet och hemma i husen och predikade det glada budskapet att Jesus är Messias.

ACTS 5

Peter Condemns //Ananias and Sapphira

1 Ananias and his wife Sapphira also sold a piece of property.

2 But they agreed to cheat and keep some of the money for themselves.
So when Ananias took the rest of the money to the apostles, 3 Peter said, “Why has Satan made you keep back some of the money from the sale of the property? Why have you lied to the Holy Spirit?

4 The property was yours before you sold it, and even after you sold it, the money was still yours. What made you do such a thing? You didn't lie to people. You lied to God!”
5  t As soon as Ananias heard this, he dropped dead, and everyone who heard about it was frightened.

6 Some young men came in and wrapped up his body. Then they took it out and buried it.
7 Three hours later Sapphira came in, but she did not know what had happened to her husband.

8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, did you sell the property for this amount?”
“Yes,” she answered, “that's the amount.”
9 Then Peter said, “Why did the two of you agree to test the Lord's Spirit? The men who buried Ananias are by the door, and they will carry you out!”

10 At once she fell at Peter's feet and died.
When the young men came back in, they found Sapphira lying there dead. So they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

11 The church members were afraid, and so was everyone else who heard what had happened.

Peter's Unusual Power

13 No one outside their group dared join them, even though everyone liked them very much.
14 Many men and women started having faith in the Lord. 15 Then sick people were brought out to the road and placed on mats. It was hoped that Peter would walk by, and his shadow would fall on them and heal them.

16 A lot of people living in the towns near Jerusalem brought those who were sick or troubled by evil spirits, and they were all healed.

Trouble for the Apostles

21 So they went into the temple before sunrise and started teaching.
The high priest and his men called together their council, which included all of Israel's leaders. Then they ordered the apostles to be brought to them from the jail. 22 The temple police who were sent to the jail did not find the apostles. They returned and said, 23 “We found the jail locked tight and the guards standing at the doors. But when we opened the doors and went in, we didn't find anyone there.”

24 The captain of the temple police and the chief priests listened to their report, but they did not know what to think about it.
25 Just then someone came in and said, “Now those men you put in jail are in the temple, teaching the people!”

26 The captain went with some of the temple police and brought the apostles back. But they did not use force. They were afraid that the people might start throwing stones at them.
27 When the apostles were brought before the council, the high priest said to them,

28 t “We told you plainly not to teach in the name of Jesus. But look what you have done! You have been teaching all over Jerusalem, and you are trying to blame us for his death.”

29 Peter and the apostles replied:
We don't obey people. We obey God. 30 You killed Jesus by nailing him to a cross. But the God our ancestors worshiped raised him to life 31 and made him our Leader and Savior. Then God gave him a place at his right side, t so that the people of Israel would turn back to him and be forgiven.

32 We are here to tell you about all this, and so is the Holy Spirit, who is God's gift to everyone who obeys God.
33 When the council members heard this, they became so angry they wanted to kill the apostles. 34 But one of the members was the Pharisee Gamaliel, a highly respected teacher. He ordered the apostles to be taken out of the room for a little while.

35 Then he said to the council:
Men of Israel, be careful what you do with these men.

36 Not long ago Theudas claimed to be someone important, and about 400 men joined him. But he was killed, and all his followers were scattered. That was the end of that.

37 Later, when the people of our nation were being counted, Judas from Galilee showed up. A lot of people followed him, but he was killed, and all his followers were scattered.
38 So I advise you to stay away from these men. Leave them alone. If what they are planning is something of their own doing, it will fail.

39 t But if God is behind it, you cannot stop it anyway, unless you want to fight against God.
The council members agreed with what he said,

40 and they called the apostles back in. They had them beaten with a whip and warned them not to speak in the name of Jesus. Then they let them go.
41 The apostles left the council and were happy, because God had considered them worthy to suffer for the sake of Jesus. 42 Every day they spent time in the temple and in one home after another. They never stopped teaching and telling the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.
