Ananías y Safira

1 Había un hombre llamado Ananías, su esposa se llamaba Safira. Se puso de acuerdo con ella para vender un terreno que tenían,2 pero entregó sólo una parte del dinero a los apóstoles y se quedó con el resto. Su esposa sabía lo que había hecho.

3 Entonces Pedro dijo:
—Ananías, ¿por qué permitiste que Satanás entrara en tu corazón? Mentiste y trataste de engañar al Espíritu Santo. Vendiste el terreno, pero ¿por qué te quedaste con parte del dinero?

4 El terreno era tuyo antes de venderlo, pudiste haber dispuesto del dinero a tu gusto. ¿Por qué se te ocurrió eso? ¡Le mentiste a Dios, no a los hombres!
5 Cuando Ananías escuchó esto, cayó muerto. Todos los que supieron esto se asustaron mucho.

6 Unos jóvenes vinieron y envolvieron su cuerpo, lo sacaron y lo enterraron.
7 Más o menos tres horas después, entró su esposa Safira, quien no sabía lo que le había pasado a su marido.

8 Pedro le preguntó:
—Dime, ¿cuánto recibieron por la venta del terreno? ¿Fue esta cantidad?
Safira le respondió:
—Sí, esa fue la cantidad que recibimos por la venta del terreno.

9 Pedro le preguntó:
—¿Por qué estuviste de acuerdo a la hora de probar al Espíritu del Señor? ¡Escucha! ¿Puedes oír esos pasos? Los hombres que acaban de enterrar a tu esposo están a la puerta y ahora van a hacer lo mismo contigo.
10 De inmediato Safira cayó muerta. Los jóvenes entraron y al darse cuenta de que estaba muerta, se la llevaron y la enterraron al lado de su esposo.

11 Toda la iglesiat y los que supieron de esto, sintieron muchísimo miedo.

Los apóstoles hacen muchos milagros

12 El poder de Dios se manifestó entre la gente por medio de muchas señales milagrosas y maravillas hechas por los apóstoles. Todos ellos se reunían en el Pórtico de Salomónt.13 Los demás no se atrevían a juntarse con ellos; sin embargo, todos hablaban muy bien de ellos.14 Cada vez eran añadidos al grupo gran cantidad de hombres y mujeres que creían en el Señor.15 Así que sacaban a los enfermos y los acostaban en camas o en camillas para que al menos la sombra de Pedro los cubriera mientras caminaba por la calle.

16 Mucha gente de los pueblos cercanos a Jerusalén traía a sus enfermos y a los atormentados por espíritus malignost, y todos eran sanados.

Tratan de callar a los apóstoles

17 El sumo sacerdotet y todos sus amigos del grupo de los saduceost se llenaron de envidia.18 Así que arrestaron a los apóstoles y los metieron en la cárcel.19 Pero en la noche, un ángel del Señor abrió las puertas de la cárcel, los dejó salir y les dijo:20 «Vayan al área del templot y cuéntenle a la gente todo el mensaje de la nueva vida».

21 Una vez oído esto, los apóstoles entraron al área del templo al amanecer y empezaron a enseñar.
El sumo sacerdote y sus amigos llegaron y llamaron a los ancianos líderes de Israel para llevar a cabo una reunión del Consejot. Después mandaron traer de la cárcel a los apóstoles.

22 Pero cuando los guardias llegaron a la cárcel, no los encontraron. Entonces regresaron e informaron lo que había pasado:

23 —Encontramos la cárcel bien asegurada y los guardias a la entrada, pero cuando entramos, la cárcel estaba vacía.
24 Al oír esto, el capitán de los guardias del templo y los jefes de los sacerdotes quedaron confundidos y se preguntaban en qué terminaría todo eso.

25 Entonces alguien vino y les dijo:
—Los hombres que ustedes metieron en la cárcel están en el área del templo enseñando a la gente.
26 Así que el capitán y sus hombres fueron y se los llevaron de vuelta. Los soldados no usaron la fuerza porque temían morir apedreados por el pueblo.

27 Los soldados llevaron a los apóstoles ante el Consejo, y el sumo sacerdote les dijo:

28 —Les advertimos que dejaran de enseñar acerca de ese hombre, pero ¡claro, siguen en las mismas y han llenado a Jerusalén de sus enseñanzas! Ustedes están tratando de echarnos la culpa por la muerte de ese hombre.

29 Pero Pedro y los otros apóstoles respondieron:
—Nosotros tenemos que obedecer a Dios antes que a los seres humanos.30 El Dios de nuestros antepasados resucitó a Jesús, pero ustedes lo trataron como a un criminal: lo mataron con violencia colgándolo en un madero.t31 Dios le dio el gran honor de sentarse a su derecha, porque ha decidido que Jesús sea nuestro Líder y Salvador para hacer cambiar la manera de pensar y de vivir de Israel y para perdonar sus pecados.

32 Nosotros somos testigos de esto, y también lo es el Espíritu Santo que Dios ha dado a todos los que lo obedecen.
33 Al oír esto, se enfurecieron tanto que empezaron a planear cómo matar a los apóstoles.34 En la reunión estaba un fariseot, llamado Gamaliel, maestro de la ley y respetado por todo el pueblo. Él se puso de pie y pidió que retiraran por un momento a los apóstoles de la reunión,

35 diciendo:
—Israelitas: tengan cuidado con lo que les van a hacer a estos hombres.36 Recuerden lo que pasó con Teudas. Él decía que era un hombre muy importante y reunió como cuatrocientos hombres. Sin embargo, a él lo mataron, todos los que lo seguían se dispersaron y no pasó nada.37 Después, un tal Judas vino de Galilea en la época del censo, y él también reunió un buen número de seguidores. Con él sucedió lo mismo, lo mataron y sus seguidores se dispersaron.38 En este caso les aconsejo que se alejen de estos hombres y los dejen en paz. Si su plan es de parte de los hombres, fallará.

39 Pero si es de parte de Dios, ustedes no podrán detenerlos y resultarán peleando contra Dios.
El Consejo estuvo de acuerdo con Gamaliel.40 Así que llamaron a los apóstoles, los azotaron y les ordenaron que no siguieran hablando en el nombre de Jesús. Luego los dejaron ir.41 Los apóstoles se fueron de la reunión del Consejo, contentos de tener el honor de sufrir por causa del nombre de Jesús.

42 Diariamente en el área del templo y por las casas, los apóstoles continuaban enseñando y anunciando las buenas noticiast de que Jesús es el Mesíast.

Acts 5

Fate of Ananias and Sapphira

1 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property,2 and kept back some of the price for himself, with his wife's full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he laid it at the apostles' feet.3 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the price of the land?4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."5 And as he heard these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last; and great fear came over all who heard of it.6 The young men got up and covered him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him.

7 Now there elapsed an interval of about three hours, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.8 And Peter responded to her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for such and such a price?" And she said, "Yes, that was the price."9 Then Peter said to her, "Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well. "10 And immediately she fell at his feet and breathed her last, and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.11 And great fear came over the whole church, and over all who heard of these things.

12 At the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were taking place among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon's portico.13 But none of the rest dared to associate with them; however, the people held them in high esteem.14 And all the more believers in the Lord, multitudes of men and women, were constantly added to their number, 15 to such an extent that they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on any one of them.16 Also the people from the cities in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together, bringing people who were sick tor afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all being healed.

Imprisonment and Release

17 But the high priest rose up, along with all his associates (that is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy.18 They laid hands on the apostles and put them in a public jail.19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and taking them out he said,20 "Go, stand and speak to the people in the temple the whole message of this Life."

21 Upon hearing this, they entered into the temple about daybreak and began to teach.
Now when the high priest and his associates came, they called the Council together, even all the Senate of the sons of Israel, and sent orders to the prison house for them to be brought.22 But the officers who came did not find them in the prison; and they returned and reported back,23 saying, "We found the prison house locked quite securely and the guards standing at the doors; but when we had opened up, we found no one inside."24 Now when the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what would come of this.25 But someone came and reported to them, "The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!"26 Then the captain went along with the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).

27 When they had brought them, they stood them before the Council. The high priest questioned them,28 saying, "We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this man's blood upon us."29 But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men.30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had put to death by hanging Him on a cross.31 He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.32 And we are witnesses tof these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him."

Gamaliel's Counsel

33 But when they heard this, they were cut to the quick and intended to kill them.34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time.35 And he said to them, "Men of Israel, take care what you propose to do with these men.36 For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men joined up with him. But he was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.37 After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census and drew away some people after him; he too perished, and all those who followed him were scattered.38 So in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action is of men, it will be overthrown;39 but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God."

40 They took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them.41 So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name.42 And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
