1 Ma, con l’aumentare del numero dei credenti, cominciarono i primi dissidi. Gli Ellenisti[j] si lamentavano che le loro vedove venivano trascurate e, durante la distribuzione giornaliera, non ricevevano la stessa quantità di cibo che si dava alle vedove ebree.2 Allora i dodici convocarono tutti i credenti e dissero:
« Noi dovremmo impiegare il nostro tempo a predicare, non ad amministrare la mensa,3 perciò cari fratelli, scegliete fra voi sette uomini, che siano saggi, pieni di Spirito Santo e ben visti da tutti, e noi affideremo a loro questo incarico.4 Così noi apostoli potremo impiegare il nostro tempo a pregare, a predicare e ad insegnare ».5 L’assemblea fu d’accordo, ed elessero: Stefano, uomo pieno di fede e di Spirito Santo, Filippo, Pròcoro, Nicànore, Timòne, Parmena e Nicola di Antiochia, un pagano convertito alla fede ebraica, che era poi diventato cristiano.6 Tutti e sette furono presentati agli apostoli, i quali, dopo aver pregato per loro, imposero su di loro le mani, per benedirli.7 Intanto il messaggio di Dio si diffondeva sempre più. A Gerusalemme il numero dei discepoli si moltiplicava a vista d’occhio, e si convertirono anche molti sacerdoti giudei.8 Un cristiano di nome Stefano, pieno di fede e Spirito Santo, faceva miracoli straordinari fra la gente.9 Ma un giorno alcuni individui della sinagoga detta « dei Liberti » cominciarono a discutere con Stefano. Ben presto, a loro si aggiunsero dei Giudei di Cirene, di Alessandria di Egitto e delle province turche della Cilicia e dell’Asia.10 Nessuno di loro, però, riusciva a tenergli testa, perché Stefano parlava con la saggezza dello Spirito Santo.11 Così istigarono certi ceffi a testimoniare il falso contro di lui, dicendo di aver sentito Stefano bestemmiare contro Mosè, e perfino contro Dio.

12 Quest’accusa mise in agitazione il popolo e i capi giudei. Allora gli furono addosso, lo presero e lo portarono in tribunale.13 Presentarono poi dei falsi testimoni, che dissero: « Quest’uomo non fa altro che parlare contro le leggi di Mosè!14 Noi stessi l’abbiamo sentito dire che quel tale, Gesù di Nazaret, distruggerà il tempio e butterà all’aria tutte le leggi di Mosè! »15 Allora tutti quelli che sedevano nella sala del tribunale videro il viso di Stefano come quello di un angelo!

Acts 6

1 Now in these days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a murmuring of the Grecian Jews against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.2 And the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not fit that we should forsake the word of God, and serve tables.3 Look ye out therefore, brethren, from among you seven men of good report, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.4 But we will continue stedfastly in prayer, and in the ministry of the word.5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus a proselyte of Antioch;6 whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands upon them.7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem exceedingly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, wrought great wonders and signs among the people.9 But there arose certain of them that were of the synagogue called the synagogue of the Libertines, and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen.10 And they were not able to withstand the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spake.11 Then they suborned men, who said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and seized him, and brought him into the council,13 and set up false witnesses, who said, This man ceaseth not to speak words against this holy place, and the law:14 for we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered unto us.15 And all that sat in the council, fastening their eyes on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.
