هفت نیکنام برای خدمت

1 در آن ایام که شمار شاگردان فزونی می‌یافت، یهودیانِ یونانی‌زبان از یهودیانِ عبرانی‌زبان گِلِه کردند که بیوه‌زنان ایشان از جیرۀ روزانۀ غذا بی‌بهره می‌مانند.2 پس آن دوازده رسول، جماعتِ شاگردان را فراخواندند و گفتند: «شایسته نیست که ما برای غذا دادن به مردم، از خدمتِ کلام خدا غافل مانیم.3 پس ای برادران، از میان خود هفت تن نیکنام را که پر از روح و حکمت باشند برگزینید تا آنان را بر این کار بگماریم4 و ما خود را وقف دعا و خدمت کلام خواهیم کرد.»5 این سخن همگان را پسند آمد. پس استیفان را که مردی پر از ایمان و روح‌القدس بود، به اتفاق فیلیپُس، پْروخُروس، نیکانور، تیمون، پَرمیناس و نیکولائوس، که از یهودی‌شدگان اَنطاکیه بود، برگزیدند.6 این مردان را نزد رسولان حاضر کردند و رسولان دعا کرده، بر ایشان دست گذاشتند.7 پس نشر کلام خدا ادامه یافت و شمار شاگردان در اورشلیم به‌سرعت فزونی گرفت و جمعی کثیر از کاهنان نیز مطیع ایمان شدند.

گرفتار شدن استیفان

8 استیفان پر از فیض و قدرت بود و معجزات و آیات عظیم در میان قوم به‌ظهور می‌آورد.9 امّا تنی چند از اعضای کنیسه‌ای موسوم به «کنیسۀ آزاد شدگان»، که از یهودیان قیرَوان و اسکندریه و نیز شماری از اهالی کیلیکیه و آسیا بودند، با او به مجادله برخاستند.10 ولی در برابر حکمت و روحی که استیفان با آن سخن می‌گفت، یارای مقاومت نداشتند.11 پس تنی چند را مخفیانه برانگیختند تا بگویند: «ما شنیدیم که استیفان به موسی و خدا سخنان کفرآمیز می‌گفت.»12 آنها مردم و مشایخ و علمای دین را تحریک کردند و بر سر استیفان ریخته، او را گرفتند و به شورا بردند.13 چند شاهد دروغین نیز آوردند که می‌گفتند: «این شخص دمی از سخن‌گفتن بر‌ضد این مکان مقدّس و شریعت بازنمی‌ایستد.14 زیرا خود شنیدیم که می‌گفت عیسای ناصری این مکان را ویران خواهد کرد و رسومی را که موسی به ما سپرده است، تغییر خواهد داد.»15 در این هنگام، همۀ حاضرانِ در شورا به استیفان چشم دوختند و چهرۀ او را همچون چهرۀ فرشتگان دیدند.

ACTS 6

Seven Leaders for the Church

1 A lot of people were now becoming followers of the Lord. But some of the ones who spoke Greek started complaining about the ones who spoke Aramaic. They complained that the Greek-speaking widows were not given their share when the food supplies were handed out each day.
2 The twelve apostles called the whole group of followers together and said, “We should not give up preaching God's message in order to serve at tables.t 3 My friends, choose seven men who are respected and wise and filled with God's Spirit. We will put them in charge of these things.

4 We can spend our time praying and serving God by preaching.”
5 This suggestion pleased everyone, and they began by choosing Stephen. He had great faith and was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they chose Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and also Nicolaus, who worshiped with the Jewish peoplet in Antioch. 6 These men were brought to the apostles. Then the apostles prayed and placed their hands on the men to show they had been chosen to do this work.

7 God's message spread, and many more people in Jerusalem became followers. Even a large number of priests put their faith in the Lord.

Stephen Is Arrested

11 So they talked some men into saying, “We heard Stephen say terrible things against Moses and God!”

12 They turned the people and their leaders and the teachers of the Law of Moses against Stephen. Then they all grabbed him and dragged him in front of the council.
13 Some men agreed to tell lies about Stephen, and they said, “This man keeps on saying terrible things about this holy temple and the Law of Moses. 14 We have heard him claim that Jesus from Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses gave us.” 15 t Then all the council members stared at Stephen. They saw that his face looked like the face of an angel.
