Alegerea celor șapte diaconi

1 În zilele acelea, când numărul ucenicilor creștea, evreii eleniști au început să murmure împotriva evreilor autohtonit, pentru că văduvele lor erau trecute cu vederea la distribuirea zilnică a celor necesare.2 Cei doisprezece au adunat mulțimea ucenicilor și le-au zis: „Nu este potrivit pentru noi să lăsăm Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu ca să slujim la mese!3 Prin urmare, fraților, alegeți dintre voi șapte bărbați vorbiți de bine, plini de Duhul Sfânt și de înțelepciune, pe care să-i punem responsabili cu îndatorirea aceasta,4 iar noi vom continua să dăm atenție rugăciunii și slujirii Cuvântului.“5 Vorbirea aceasta a plăcut întregii mulțimi, așa că l-au ales pe Ștefan, un bărbat plin de credință și de Duhul Sfânt, pe Filip, pe Prohorus, pe Nicanor, pe Timon, pe Parmenas și pe Nicolaus, un prozelit din Antiohia;6 i-au adus înaintea apostolilor, care s-au rugat și și-au pus mâinile peste ei.

7 Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu continua să se răspândească, numărul ucenicilor creștea tot mai mult în Ierusalim și foarte mulți preoți veneau la credință.

Arestarea lui Ștefan

8 Ștefan, un om plin de har și de putere, făcea minuni și semne mari în popor.9 Unii din sinagogat numită „A oamenilor liberit“ – a celor din Cirenat, a celor din Alexandriat și a celor din Ciliciat și din Asiat– au început o dispută cu Ștefan,10 dar nu puteau să se opună înțelepciunii și Duhului cu care vorbea el.11 Atunci au plătit niște bărbați care să spună: „Noi l-am auzit rostind cuvinte blasfemiatoare împotriva lui Moise și împotriva lui Dumnezeu!“12 Au incitat pe popor, pe bătrâni și pe cărturari, s-au repezit asupra lui, l-au înșfăcat și l-au dus înaintea Sinedriului.13 Au scos niște martori mincinoși, care au zis: „Omul acesta nu încetează să rostească cuvinte blasfemiatoare împotriva acestui Lăcaș sfânt și împotriva Legii!14 Căci l-am auzit spunând că Acest Isus din Nazaret va distruge locul acesta și va schimba obiceiurile pe care ni le-a încredințat Moise!“15 Toți cei ce ședeau în Sinedriu s-au uitat țintă la el și au văzut că fața lui arăt a ca fața unui înger.

ACTS 6

Seven Leaders for the Church

1 A lot of people were now becoming followers of the Lord. But some of the ones who spoke Greek started complaining about the ones who spoke Aramaic. They complained that the Greek-speaking widows were not given their share when the food supplies were handed out each day.
2 The twelve apostles called the whole group of followers together and said, “We should not give up preaching God's message in order to serve at tables.t 3 My friends, choose seven men who are respected and wise and filled with God's Spirit. We will put them in charge of these things.

4 We can spend our time praying and serving God by preaching.”
5 This suggestion pleased everyone, and they began by choosing Stephen. He had great faith and was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they chose Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and also Nicolaus, who worshiped with the Jewish peoplet in Antioch. 6 These men were brought to the apostles. Then the apostles prayed and placed their hands on the men to show they had been chosen to do this work.

7 God's message spread, and many more people in Jerusalem became followers. Even a large number of priests put their faith in the Lord.

Stephen Is Arrested

11 So they talked some men into saying, “We heard Stephen say terrible things against Moses and God!”

12 They turned the people and their leaders and the teachers of the Law of Moses against Stephen. Then they all grabbed him and dragged him in front of the council.
13 Some men agreed to tell lies about Stephen, and they said, “This man keeps on saying terrible things about this holy temple and the Law of Moses. 14 We have heard him claim that Jesus from Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses gave us.” 15 t Then all the council members stared at Stephen. They saw that his face looked like the face of an angel.
