Siete hombres escogidos para servir
1 Al multiplicarse los creyentest rápidamente, hubo muestras de descontento. Los creyentes que hablaban griego se quejaban de los que hablaban hebreo diciendo que sus viudas eran discriminadas en la distribución diaria de los alimentos.
2 De manera que los Doce convocaron a todos los creyentes a una reunión. Dijeron: «Nosotros, los apóstoles, deberíamos ocupar nuestro tiempo en enseñar la palabra de Dios, y no en dirigir la distribución de alimento. 3 Por lo tanto, hermanos, escojan a siete hombres que sean muy respetados, que estén llenos del Espíritu y de sabiduría. A ellos les daremos esa responsabilidad. 4 Entonces nosotros, los apóstoles, podremos dedicar nuestro tiempo a la oración y a enseñar la palabra».
5 A todos les gustó la idea y eligieron a Esteban (un hombre lleno de fe y del Espíritu Santo), a Felipe, a Prócoro, a Nicanor, a Timón, a Parmenas y a Nicolás de Antioquía (quien anteriormente se había convertido a la fe judía). 6 Estos siete hombres fueron presentados ante los apóstoles, quienes oraron por ellos y les impusieron las manos.
7 Así que el mensaje de Dios siguió extendiéndose. El número de creyentes aumentó en gran manera en Jerusalén, y muchos de los sacerdotes judíos también se convirtieron.
Arresto de Esteban
8 Esteban, un hombre lleno de la gracia y del poder de Dios, hacía señales y milagros asombrosos entre la gente. 9 Cierto día, unos hombres de la sinagoga de los Esclavos Liberados —así la llamaban— comenzaron a debatir con él. Eran judíos de Cirene, Alejandría, Cilicia y de la provincia de Asia. 10 Ninguno de ellos podía hacerle frente a la sabiduría y al Espíritu con que hablaba Esteban.
11 Entonces persuadieron a unos hombres para que dijeran mentiras acerca de Esteban. Ellos declararon: «Nosotros lo oímos blasfemar contra Moisés y hasta contra Dios». 12 Esto provocó a la gente, a los ancianos y a los maestros de la ley religiosa. Así que arrestaron a Esteban y lo llevaron ante el Concilio Supremo.t
13 Los testigos mentirosos dijeron:
—Este hombre siempre habla contra el santo templo y contra la ley de Moisés. 14 Lo hemos oído decir que ese tal Jesús de Nazarett destruirá el templo y cambiará las costumbres que Moisés nos transmitió.
15 En ese momento, todos los del Concilio Supremo fijaron la mirada en Esteban, porque su cara comenzó a brillar como la de un ángel.
ACTS 6
Seven Leaders for the Church
1 A lot of people were now becoming followers of the Lord. But some of the ones who spoke Greek started complaining about the ones who spoke Aramaic. They complained that the Greek-speaking widows were not given their share when the food supplies were handed out each day.
2 The twelve apostles called the whole group of followers together and said, “We should not give up preaching God's message in order to serve at tables.t 3 My friends, choose seven men who are respected and wise and filled with God's Spirit. We will put them in charge of these things.
4 We can spend our time praying and serving God by preaching.”
5 This suggestion pleased everyone, and they began by choosing Stephen. He had great faith and was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they chose Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and also Nicolaus, who worshiped with the Jewish peoplet in Antioch. 6 These men were brought to the apostles. Then the apostles prayed and placed their hands on the men to show they had been chosen to do this work.
7 God's message spread, and many more people in Jerusalem became followers. Even a large number of priests put their faith in the Lord.Stephen Is Arrested
8 God gave Stephen the power to work great miracles and wonders among the people. 9 But some men from Cyrene and Alexandria were members of a group who called themselves “Free Men.”t They started arguing with Stephen. Some others from Cilicia and Asia also argued with him. 10 But they were no match for Stephen, who spoke with the great wisdom that the Spirit gave him.
11 So they talked some men into saying, “We heard Stephen say terrible things against Moses and God!”
12 They turned the people and their leaders and the teachers of the Law of Moses against Stephen. Then they all grabbed him and dragged him in front of the council.
13 Some men agreed to tell lies about Stephen, and they said, “This man keeps on saying terrible things about this holy temple and the Law of Moses. 14 We have heard him claim that Jesus from Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses gave us.” 15 t Then all the council members stared at Stephen. They saw that his face looked like the face of an angel.
