Atos 6

A Escolha dos Sete

1 Naqueles dias, crescendo o número de discípulos, os judeus de fala grega entre eles queixaram-se dos judeus de fala hebraica, porque suas viúvas estavam sendo esquecidas na distribuição diária de alimento. 2 Por isso os Doze reuniram todos os discípulos e disseram: “Não é certo negligenciarmos o ministério da palavra de Deus, a fim de servir às mesas. 3 Irmãos, escolham entre vocês sete homens de bom testemunho, cheios do Espírito e de sabedoria. Passaremos a eles essa tarefa 4 e nos dedicaremos à oração e ao ministério da palavra”.

5 Tal proposta agradou a todos. Então escolheram Estêvão, homem cheio de fé e do Espírito Santo, além de Filipe, Prócoro, Nicanor, Timom, Pármenas e Nicolau, um convertido ao judaísmo, proveniente de Antioquia. 6 Apresentaram esses homens aos apóstolos, os quais oraram e lhes impuseram as mãos.

7 Assim, a palavra de Deus se espalhava. Crescia rapidamente o número de discípulos em Jerusalém; também um grande número de sacerdotes obedecia à fé.

A Prisão de Estêvão

8 Estêvão, homem cheio da graça e do poder de Deus, realizava grandes maravilhas e sinais entre o povo. 9 Contudo, levantou-se oposição dos membros da chamada sinagoga dos Libertos, dos judeus de Cirene e de Alexandria, bem como das províncias da Cilícia e da Ásia. Esses homens começaram a discutir com Estêvão, 10 mas não podiam resistir à sabedoria e ao Espírito com que ele falava.

11 Então subornaram alguns homens para dizerem: “Ouvimos Estêvão falar palavras blasfemas contra Moisés e contra Deus”.

12 Com isso agitaram o povo, os líderes religiosos e os mestres da lei. E, prendendo Estêvão, levaram-no ao Sinédrio. 13 Ali apresentaram falsas testemunhas que diziam: “Este homem não pára de falar contra este lugar santo e contra a Lei. 14 Pois o ouvimos dizer que esse Jesus, o Nazareno, destruirá este lugar e mudará os costumes que Moisés nos deixou”.

15 Olhando para ele, todos os que estavam sentados no Sinédrio viram que o seu rosto parecia o rosto de um anjo.

ACTS 6

Seven Leaders for the Church

1 A lot of people were now becoming followers of the Lord. But some of the ones who spoke Greek started complaining about the ones who spoke Aramaic. They complained that the Greek-speaking widows were not given their share when the food supplies were handed out each day.
2 The twelve apostles called the whole group of followers together and said, “We should not give up preaching God's message in order to serve at tables.t 3 My friends, choose seven men who are respected and wise and filled with God's Spirit. We will put them in charge of these things.

4 We can spend our time praying and serving God by preaching.”
5 This suggestion pleased everyone, and they began by choosing Stephen. He had great faith and was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they chose Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and also Nicolaus, who worshiped with the Jewish peoplet in Antioch. 6 These men were brought to the apostles. Then the apostles prayed and placed their hands on the men to show they had been chosen to do this work.

7 God's message spread, and many more people in Jerusalem became followers. Even a large number of priests put their faith in the Lord.

Stephen Is Arrested

11 So they talked some men into saying, “We heard Stephen say terrible things against Moses and God!”

12 They turned the people and their leaders and the teachers of the Law of Moses against Stephen. Then they all grabbed him and dragged him in front of the council.
13 Some men agreed to tell lies about Stephen, and they said, “This man keeps on saying terrible things about this holy temple and the Law of Moses. 14 We have heard him claim that Jesus from Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses gave us.” 15 t Then all the council members stared at Stephen. They saw that his face looked like the face of an angel.
