1 Trong lúc đó, số môn đồ gia tăng; những người Do Thái nói tiếng Hi Lạpt phàn nàn, trách móc người Do Thái nói tiếng A-ram,t vì những góa phụ của họ đã bị bỏ bê trong việc cấp phát lương thực hằng ngày. 2 Mười hai sứ đồ triệu tập tất cả môn đồ lại và nói: “Bỏ việc giảng dạy lời Đức Chúa Trời để phục vụ bàn ăn là điều không phải. 3 Vậy, xin anh em hãy chọn trong số mình bảy người được tiếng tốt, đầy dẫy Thánh Linh và khôn ngoan, chúng tôi sẽ giao trách nhiệm nầy cho họ. 4 Còn chúng tôi sẽ cứ chuyên tâm về sự cầu nguyện và phục vụ lời Chúa.” 5 Tất cả mọi người đều hài lòng về các lời ấy; họ đã chọn Ê-tiên là người đầy đức tin và Đức Thánh Linh, Phi-líp, Bô-cô-rơ, Ni-ca-no, Ti-môn, Ba-mê-na và Ni-cô-la là người An-ti-ốt theo Do Thái giáo. 6 Họ trình diện bảy người ấy cho các sứ đồ; các sứ đồ cầu nguyện rồi đặt tay trên những người nầy.
7 Đạo của Đức Chúa Trời ngày càng phát triển; số môn đồ tại Giê-ru-sa-lem gia tăng gấp bội. Rất nhiều thầy tế lễ cũng vâng theo đạot nữa.Ê-tiên bị vu cáo
8 Ê-tiên được đầy ân điển và quyền năng, làm những phép mầu và dấu lạ rất lớn trong dân chúng. 9 Lúc ấy, có mấy hội viên của nhà hội gọi là nhà hội của những người tự dot và những người quê ở Sy-ren, A-léc-xan-đờ-ri-a, cùng những người Do Thái ở Si-li-si và xứ A-si-a nổi lên tranh luận với Ê-tiên. 10 Nhưng họ không chống nổi lời lẽ khôn ngoan và Thánh Linh là Đấng đã ban cho ông những lời lẽ ấy, 11 nên ngầm xúi giục một số người vu cáo rằng: “Chúng tôi đã nghe nó nói những lời xúc phạm đến Môi-se và Đức Chúa Trời.” 12 Họ kích động dân chúng, các trưởng lão và các thầy thông giáo xông vào bắt và giải ông đến trước Hội đồng. 13 Họ đưa ra những nhân chứng dối, nói rằng: “Người nầy thường nói những lời xúc phạm đến nơi thánh và luật pháp. 14 Vì chúng tôi đã nghe nó nói rằng Jêsus người Na-xa-rét nầy sẽ phá hủy nơi đây và thay đổi tục lệ mà Môi-se đã truyền lại cho chúng ta.” 15 Tất cả những người ngồi tại Hội đồng đều nhìn chăm Ê-tiên và thấy mặt ông giống như mặt thiên sứ.

Seven Leaders for the Church
1 A lot of people were now becoming followers of the Lord. But some of the ones who spoke Greek started complaining about the ones who spoke Aramaic. They complained that the Greek-speaking widows were not given their share when the food supplies were handed out each day.
2 The twelve apostles called the whole group of followers together and said, “We should not give up preaching God's message in order to serve at tables.t 3 My friends, choose seven men who are respected and wise and filled with God's Spirit. We will put them in charge of these things.
4 We can spend our time praying and serving God by preaching.”
5 This suggestion pleased everyone, and they began by choosing Stephen. He had great faith and was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they chose Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and also Nicolaus, who worshiped with the Jewish peoplet in Antioch. 6 These men were brought to the apostles. Then the apostles prayed and placed their hands on the men to show they had been chosen to do this work.
7 God's message spread, and many more people in Jerusalem became followers. Even a large number of priests put their faith in the Lord.Stephen Is Arrested
8 God gave Stephen the power to work great miracles and wonders among the people. 9 But some men from Cyrene and Alexandria were members of a group who called themselves “Free Men.”t They started arguing with Stephen. Some others from Cilicia and Asia also argued with him. 10 But they were no match for Stephen, who spoke with the great wisdom that the Spirit gave him.
11 So they talked some men into saying, “We heard Stephen say terrible things against Moses and God!”
12 They turned the people and their leaders and the teachers of the Law of Moses against Stephen. Then they all grabbed him and dragged him in front of the council.
13 Some men agreed to tell lies about Stephen, and they said, “This man keeps on saying terrible things about this holy temple and the Law of Moses. 14 We have heard him claim that Jesus from Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses gave us.” 15 t Then all the council members stared at Stephen. They saw that his face looked like the face of an angel.
