1 Saulus wou die kerk met alle geweld uitroei. Hy het volgelinge van die Here oral met die dood gedreig.2 Daarom het hy by die hoëpriester lasbriewe gekry en daarmee na die Joodse aanbiddingsplekke in Damaskus afgesit. Daar wou hy elke gelowige vang op wie hy sy hande kon lê. Sy plan was om elkeen wat in die Here geglo het terug te vat na Jerusalem om daar verhoor te word.
3 Naby Damaskus is Saulus skielik deur 'n skerp lig uit die hemel verblind. Hy het baie groot geskrik toe hy die lig sien en het soos 'n dooie op die grond neergeval.4 Toe hoor hy 'n stem wat vir hom sê: "Saul, Saul, hoekom is jy besig om My te vervolg?"
5 "Sê asseblief vir my wie U is, Here," het hy benoud gevra.
"Dit is Ek, Jesus. Jy is besig om My te vervolg.6 Staan nou op en gaan Damaskus toe. Daar sal jy hoor wat jy moet doen," het Jesus geantwoord.
7 Die ander mense wat saam met Saulus gereis het, was verstom oor wat gebeur het. Hulle kon net die stem hoor, maar hulle het niks gesien nie.
8 Saulus het orent gekom. Toe kom hy agter dat hy niks kan sien nie. Sy reisgenote moes hom lei.9 Drie dae lank was hy blind. Hy het niks geëet of gedrink nie.
10  In Damaskus was daar 'n volgeling van Jesus met die naam Ananias. Die Here het in 'n visioen met hom gaan praat: "Ananias!"
"Ja, Here, hier is ek," het hy geantwoord.
11 Toe sê die Here vir hom: "Jy moet dadelik na Reguitstraat gaan. Gaan soek die huis waar 'n man met die naam Judas bly. Vra dan vir hom of jy Saulus te sien kan kry. Hy is op die oomblik besig om te bid.12 Ek het reeds in 'n gesig vir hom gewys dat jy op pad is na hom toe om jou hande op hom te sit sodat hy weer kan sien."
13 Ananias het geskrik toe hy dit hoor: "Here, heelwat mense het my al teen hierdie man gewaarsku. Dis hy wat u kinders in Jerusalem so wreed vervolg.14 Nou het hy na ons toe gekom met lasbriewe van die hoëpriester om ons almal te vang."
15 Die Here antwoord Ananias: "Doen wat Ek vir jou sê. Gaan dadelik na Saulus toe.16 Ek het hom uitgekies vir 'n baie besondere opdrag. Hy gaan nog met baie belangrike mense oor My praat, en ook met die Jode en met mense wat aan ander volke behoort. Daar lê 'n moeilike taak vir hom voor. Saulus gaan nog baie swaarkry omdat hy oor My moet praat. Ek sal dit een van die dae vir hom wys."
17 Ananias het toe gedoen wat die Here vir hom gesê het. In Judas se huis het hy sy hande op Saulus gaan sit. Hy sê toe vir hom: "Saulus, my broer, die Here het my na jou toe gestuur. Dit is Hy, Jesus, wat aan jou verskyn het toe jy op pad hierheen was.18 Hy het my na jou toe laat kom sodat jy weer kan sien en sodat jou lewe vervul kan word met die Heilige Gees." Ananias het skaars klaar gepraat, toe val daar iets soos skille van Saulus se oë af. Daarna kon hy weer sien. Hy is ook gedoop.19 Toe het hy weer begin eet. Sy liggaamskragte het gou teruggekeer. Daarna het Saulus nog 'n ruk by die gelowiges in Damaskus gebly.
20  Saulus het by die Joodse aanbiddingsplek daar in Damaskus ingestap en vir die mense vertel dat Jesus die Seun van God is.21 Almal wat hom hoor praat het, was baie verbaas. "Wat gaan nou aan? Is hy nie die man wat in Jerusalem verwoesting gesaai het onder almal wat in daardie Jesus glo nie? Hy het dan juis hierheen gekom om hulle te vang sodat hulle voor die hoëpriester aangekla kan word," het hulle vir mekaar gesê.
22 Hierdie opmerkings het Saulus nie van stryk gebring nie. Die Here was by hom met sy groot krag. Saulus het die Jode later skoon deurmekaargepraat. Hy het vir hulle gewys dat Jesus regtig die Messias is, die Een vir wie God gestuur het om ons sondes weg te vat.
23 Die Jode het later besluit om Saulus dood te maak,24 maar gelukkig het hy daarvan te hore gekom. Om seker te maak dat Saulus nie ontsnap nie, het hulle toe die stad se hekke dag en nag laat oppas.
25 Die gelowiges het 'n slim plan gemaak. Een nag het hulle Saulus in 'n groot mandjie gesit en hom oor die stadsmuur laat afsak.
26  Daarna het Saulus teruggegaan Jerusalem toe. Daar het hy probeer om by die kerk aan te sluit, maar die gelowiges was skrikkerig vir hom. Hulle het gedink hy gee net voor dat hy glo.
27 Barnabas het egter gesien Saulus se geloof in Jesus is eg. Hy het hom jammer gekry en hom toe aan die apostels gaan voorstel. Barnabas het hulle vertel hoe die Here aan Saulus verskyn en met hom gepraat het. Hy het ook vertel dat Saulus nie bang was om in Damaskus vir die mense te sê dat Jesus die Here is nie.
28 Daarna het Saulus in die openbaar saam met hulle rondgestap. Oral waar hy gekom het, het hy met ander mense oor Jesus gepraat.29 Kort voor lank het Saulus egter moeilikheid gekry met 'n groep Griekssprekende Jode. Hulle het niks gehou van wat hy gesê het nie. Hulle het toe besluit om hom dood te maak.30 Toe die gelowiges daarvan te hore kom, het hulle hom dadelik uit die stad weggevat. Hulle is haastig met hom Sesarea toe. Van daar af het Saulus per skip na Tarsus vertrek.
Daarna het daar 'n tydperk van vrede in die kerk aangebreek.31 Dwarsdeur Judea, Galilea en Samaria het mense in groot getalle by die kerk aangesluit. Gelowiges se vertroue in die Here het sterker geword. Hulle almal het ook groot eerbied vir die Here gehad. En hulle het al hoe meer bewus geword van die bystand en troos van die Heilige Gees in hulle lewe.
32  In daardie tyd het Petrus oral by die gelowiges besoek gaan aflê. Tydens een van dié besoeke het hy in 'n dorp met die naam Lidda aangekom waar hy by 'n paar gelowiges gaan bly het. Daar het hy 'n man raakgeloop wat al agt jaar lank verlam was.33 Sy naam was Eneas. Hy kon nie eens self uit sy bed uit opstaan nie. Petrus het voor hom gaan staan en gesê:34 "Eneas, Jesus Christus maak jou nou gesond. Staan op! Maak jou bed op sodat almal kan sien dat jy gesond is." Dadelik het hy uit die bed opgestaan en begin rondstap.35 Almal wat daar in Lidda en Saron gebly het, het later gesien hoe Eneas in die straat rondloop. Toe het baie mense ook hulle lewens aan die Here gegee.
36  In Joppe, 'n entjie van Lidda af, het 'n volgeling van Jesus gebly met die naam Tabita. (Haar naam beteken "Wildsbokkie".) Sy het baie omgegee vir ander mense. Waar sy kon, het sy die armes gehelp en goeie dinge vir ander mense gedoen.
37 Juis in daardie tyd toe Petrus in die omgewing was, het Tabita ernstig siek geword. Kort daarna is sy oorlede. Ander gelowiges het haar liggaam gereedgemaak vir die begrafnis. Hulle het haar gewas en in 'n bokamer uitgelê.38 Die gelowiges het gehoor dat Petrus daar naby in Lidda was. Hulle het twee mans soontoe gestuur om hom te smeek om gou-gou Joppe toe te kom.
39 Petrus was dadelik bereid om saam met hulle te gaan. In Joppe aangekom, het hy saam met hulle na die bokamer gegaan waar Tabita se liggaam gelê het. 'n Klompie van haar vriendinne, almal weduwees, het daar om haar gestaan. Hulle was baie hartseer. Hulle het vir Petrus van die klere gewys wat sy gemaak het toe sy nog geleef het.
40 Petrus het vir almal gevra om buite te gaan wag. Daarna het hy op sy knieë neergeval en begin bid. Toe kyk hy na haar en sê vir haar: "Tabita, staan op!"
41 Tabita het dadelik haar oë oopgemaak. Toe sy Petrus sien, het sy regop gesit. Hy het haar hand gevat en haar gehelp om op te staan. Petrus het toe vir die gelowiges en die weduwees wat buite die deur gewag het, binnetoe geroep. Toe hulle in die kamer kom, sien hulle dat Tabita weer lewe.
42 Hierdie nuus het soos 'n veldbrand deur Joppe versprei. Dit het gemaak dat baie mense in die Here begin glo het.
43 Petrus het 'n hele ruk by 'n man met die naam Simon daar in Joppe gebly. Simon het leergoedere gemaak en verkoop.

Acts 9

The Conversion of Saul

1 Meanwhile Saul, still breathing out threatst to murdert the Lord’s disciples, went to the high priest2 and requested letters from him to the synagoguess in Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way,s either men or women, he could bring them as prisonerst to Jerusalem.ss3 As he was going along, approachingt Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashedt around him.4 Het fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul,t why are you persecuting me?”s5 So he said, “Who are you, Lord?” He replied, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting!6 But stand upt and enter the city and you will be toldt what you must do.”7 (Now the ment who were traveling with him stood there speechless,t because they heard the voice but saw no one.)s8 So Saul got up from the ground, but although his eyes were open,t he could see nothing.s Leading him by the hand, his companionst brought him into Damascus.

9 Fort three days he could not see, and he neither ate nor drank anything.t
10 Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. Thet Lords said to him in a vision, “Ananias,” and he replied, “Here I am,t Lord.”11 Then the Lord told him, “Get up and go to the street called ‘Straight,’s and at Judas’ house look for a man from Tarsus named Saul. For he is praying,12 and he has seen in a visionss a man named Ananias come in and place his hands on him so that he may see again.”13 But Ananias replied,s “Lord, I have heard from many peoplet about this man, how much harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem,14 and here he has authority from the chief priests to imprisont all who call on your name!”s15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, because this man is my chosen instrumentt to carry my name before Gentiles and kings and the people of Israel.t16 For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”t17 So Ananias departed and entered the house, placedt his hands on Sault and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came here,t has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”s18 Immediatelyt something like scalest fell from his eyes, and he could see again. 19 and after taking some food, his strength returned.
For several dayst he was with the disciples in Damascus,20 and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues,s saying, “This man is the Son of God.”ts21 Allt who heard him were amazed and were saying, “Is this nott the man who in Jerusalem was ravagingt those who call on this name, and who had come here to bring them as prisonerst to the chief priests?”

22 But Saul became more and more capable,t and was causing consternationt among the Jews who lived in Damascus by provingt that Jesust is the Christ.ts

Saul’s Escape from Damascus

23 Now after some days had passed, the Jews plotteds together to kill him,24 but Saul learned of their plot against him.t They were also watchingt the city gatest day and night so that they could kill him.

25 But his disciples took him at night and let him down through an openingt in the wall by lowering him in a basket.t

Saul Returns to Jerusalem

26 When he arrived in Jerusalem,s he attempted to associatet with the disciples, and they were all afraid of him, because they did not believet that he was a disciple.27 But Barnabas tookt Saul,t broughtt him to the apostles, and related to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, thatt the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken out boldlyt in the name of Jesus.28 So he was staying with them, associating openly with themt in Jerusalem, speaking out boldly in the name of the Lord.29 He was speaking and debatingt with the Greek-speaking Jews,t but they were trying to kill him.

30 When the brothers found out about this, they brought him down to Caesareass and sent him away to Tarsus.

31 Thent the church throughout Judea, Galilee,t and Samaria experiencedt peace and thus was strengthened.t Livingt in the fear of the Lord and in the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, the churcht increased in numbers.

Peter Heals Aeneas

32 Nowt as Peter was traveling around from place to place,t he also came down to the saints who lived in Lydda.s33 He found there a man named Aeneas who had been confined to a mattress for eight years becauset he was paralyzed.34 Petert said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus the Christst heals you. Get up and make your own bed!”t And immediately he got up.

35 Allt those who lived in Lyddas and Sharons saw him, and theyt turneds to the Lord.

Peter Raises Dorcas

36 Now in Joppas there was a disciple named Tabitha (which in translation meanst Dorcas).s She was continually doing good deeds and acts of charity.t37 At that timet she became sickt and died. When they had washedt her body,t they placed it in an upstairs room.38 Because Lyddas was near Joppa, when the disciples heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Come to us without delay.”t39 So Peter got up and went with them, andt when he arrivedt they brought him to the upper room. Allt the widows stood beside him, crying and showing himt the tunicst and other clothingt Dorcas used to maket while she was with them.40 But Peter sent them all outside,t knelt down,t and prayed. Turningt to the body, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” Then she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up.s41 He gavet her his hand and helped her get up. Then he calledt the saints and widows and presented her alive.42 This became known throughout allt Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.s
