1 Und wir wandten uns und zogen des Weges nach Basan hinauf; und Og, der König von Basan, zog aus, uns entgegen, er und all sein Volk, zum Streite nach Edrei.2 Und Jehova sprach zu mir: Fürchte ihn nicht! Denn in deine Hand habe ich ihn und all sein Volk und sein Land gegeben; und tue ihm, wie du Sihon, dem Könige der Amoriter, getan hast, der zu Hesbon wohnte.3 Und Jehova, unser Gott, gab auch Og, den König von Basan, und all sein Volk in unsere Hand; und wir schlugen ihn, bis ihm kein Entronnener übrigblieb.4 Und in selbiger Zeit nahmen wir alle seine Städte ein; es war keine Stadt, die wir ihnen nicht nahmen: sechzig Städte, den ganzen Landstrich Argob, das Königreich Ogs in Basan;5 alle diese Städte waren befestigt mit hohen Mauern, Toren und Riegeln; außer den sehr vielen offenen Städten.6 Und wir verbannten sie, wie wir Sihon, dem Könige von Hesbon, getan hatten; wir verbannten ihre ganze Bevölkerung: Männer, Weiber und Kinder.7 Aber alles Vieh und den Raub der Städte erbeuteten wir für uns.8 Und wir nahmen in selbiger Zeit aus der Hand der zwei Könige der Amoriter das Land, welches diesseit des Jordan ist, vom Flusse Arnon bis an den Berg Hermon9 (die Zidonier nennen den Hermon Sirjon, und die Amoriter nennen ihn Senir):10 alle Städte der Ebene und das ganze Gilead, und das ganze Basan bis Salka und Edrei, die Städte des Königreichs Ogs in Basan.11 Denn nur Og, der König von Basan, war von dem Überrest der Riesen übriggeblieben. Siehe, sein Bett, ein Bett von Eisen, ist es nicht in Rabba der Kinder Ammon? Seine Länge mißt neun Ellen und seine Breite vier Ellen, nach dem Ellenbogen eines Mannes.12 Und dieses Land nahmen wir in selbiger Zeit in Besitz. Von Aroer an, das am Flusse Arnon ist, und die Hälfte des Gebirges Gilead und seine Städte gab ich den Rubenitern und den Gaditern;13 und das Übrige von Gilead und das ganze Basan, das Königreich Ogs, gab ich dem halben Stamme Manasse. (Der ganze Landstrich Argob, das ganze Basan, dieses wird das Land der Riesen genannt.14 Jair, der Sohn Manasses, nahm den ganzen Landstrich Argob bis an die Grenze der Gesuriter und der Maakathiter und nannte sie, das Basan, nach seinem Namen: Dörfer Jairs, bis auf diesen Tag.)15 Und dem Makir gab ich Gilead.16 Und den Rubenitern und den Gaditern gab ich von Gilead bis zum Flusse Arnon, bis zur Mitte des Flusses und das Angrenzende, und bis zum Flusse Jabbok, der Grenze der Kinder Ammon;17 und die Ebene und den Jordan und das Angrenzende, von Kinnereth bis zum Meere der Ebene, dem Salzmeere, unter den Abhängen des Pisga gegen Sonnenaufgang.18 Und ich gebot euch in selbiger Zeit und sprach: Jehova, euer Gott, hat euch dieses Land gegeben, es zu besitzen. Gerüstet sollt ihr, alle streitbaren Männer, vor euren Brüdern, den Kindern Israel, hinüberziehen.19 Nur eure Weiber und eure Kinder und euer Vieh, ich weiß, daß ihr viel Vieh habt, sollen in euren Städten bleiben, die ich euch gegeben habe,20 bis Jehova euren Brüdern Ruhe schafft wie euch, und auch sie das Land besitzen, welches Jehova, euer Gott, ihnen jenseit des Jordan gibt; dann sollt ihr zurückkehren, ein jeder zu seinem Besitztum, das ich euch gegeben habe.21 Und dem Josua gebot ich in selbiger Zeit und sprach: Deine Augen haben alles gesehen, was Jehova, euer Gott, diesen zwei Königen getan hat; also wird Jehova allen Königreichen tun, wohin du hinüberziehen wirst.22 Fürchtet sie nicht! Denn Jehova, euer Gott, er ist es, der für euch streitet.23 Und ich flehte zu Jehova in selbiger Zeit und sprach:24 Herr, Jehova! Du hast begonnen, deinem Knechte deine Größe und deine starke Hand zu zeigen; denn welcher Gott ist im Himmel und auf Erden, der tun könnte gleich deinen Werken und gleich deinen Machttaten?25 Laß mich doch hinüberziehen und das gute Land sehen, welches jenseit des Jordan ist, dieses gute Gebirge und den Libanon.26 Aber Jehova war über mich erzürnt um euretwillen und hörte nicht auf mich; und Jehova sprach zu mir: Laß es genug sein; rede mir fortan nicht mehr von dieser Sache!27 Steige auf den Gipfel des Pisga, und hebe deine Augen auf gegen Westen und gegen Norden und gegen Süden und gegen Osten, und sieh mit deinen Augen; denn du wirst nicht über diesen Jordan gehen.28 Und gebiete dem Josua und stärke ihn und befestige ihn; denn er soll vor diesem Volke her hinüberziehen, und er soll ihnen das Land, das du sehen wirst, als Erbe austeilen. -29 Und wir blieben im Tale, Beth-Peor gegenüber.

Defeat of King Og of Bashan

1 Next we set out ont the route to Bashan,s but King Og of Bashan and his whole armyt came out to meet us in battle at Edrei.s2 The Lord, however, said to me, “Don’t be afraid of him because I have already given him, his whole army,t and his land to you. You will do to him exactly what you did to King Sihon of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon.”3 So the Lord our God did indeed give over to us King Og of Bashan and his whole army and we struck them down until not a single survivor was left.t4 We captured all his cities at that time – there was not a town we did not take from them – sixty cities, all the region of Argob,s the dominion of Og in Bashan.5 All of these cities were fortified by high walls, gates, and locking bars;t in addition there were a great many open villages.t6 We put all of these under divine judgmentts just as we had done to King Sihon of Heshbon – every occupied city,t including women and children.7 But all the livestock and plunder from the cities we kept for ourselves.8 So at that time we took the land of the two Amorite kings in the Transjordan from Wadi Arnon to Mount Hermons9 (the Sidonianss call Hermon Sirions and the Amorites call it Senir),s10 all the cities of the plateau, all of Gilead and Bashan as far as Salecahs and Edrei,s cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

11 Only King Og of Bashan was left of the remaining Rephaites. (It is noteworthyt that his sarcophagust was made of iron.t Does it not, indeed, still remain in Rabbaths of the Ammonites? It is thirteen and a half feett long and six feett wide according to standard measure.)t

Distribution of the Transjordanian Allotments

12 This is the land we brought under our control at that time: The territory extending from Aroerts by the Wadi Arnon and half the Gilead hill country with its cities I gave to the Reubenites and Gadites.s13 The rest of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh.s (All the region of Argob,s that is, all Bashan, is called the land of Rephaim.14 Jair, son of Manasseh, took all the Argob region as far as the border with the Geshuritess and Maacathitess (namely Bashan) and called it by his name, Havvoth-Jair,s which it retains to this very day.)15 I gave Gilead to Machir.s16 To the Reubenites and Gadites I allocated the territory extending from Gilead as far as Wadi Arnon (the exact middle of the wadi was a boundary) all the way to the Wadi Jabbok, the Ammonite border.

17 The Arabah and the Jordan Rivert were also a border, from the sea of Chinnerethts to the sea of the Arabah (that is, the Salt Sea),s beneath the watershedt of Pisgahs to the east.

Instructions to the Transjordanian Tribes

18 At that time I instructed you as follows: “The Lord your God has given you this land for your possession. You warriors are to cross over before your fellow Israelitest equipped for battle.19 But your wives, children, and livestock (of which I know you have many) may remain in the cities I have given you.20 You must fightt until the Lord gives your countrymen victoryt as he did you and they take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving them on the other side of the Jordan River. Then each of you may return to his own territory that I have given you.”21 I also commanded Joshua at the same time, “You have seen everything the Lord your God did to these two kings; het will do the same to all the kingdoms where you are going.t

22 Do not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God will personally fight for you.”

Denial to Moses of the Promised Land

23 Moreover, at that time I pleaded with the Lord,24 “O, Lord God,t you have begun to show met your greatness and strength.t (What god in heaven or earth can rival your works and mighty deeds?)25 Let me please cross over to see the good land on the other side of the Jordan River – this good hill country and the Lebanon!”t26 But the Lord was angry at me because of you and would not listen to me. Instead, het said to me, “Enough of that!t Do not speak to me anymore about this matter.27 Go up to the top of Pisgah and take a good look to the west, north, south, and east,t for you will not be allowed to cross the Jordan.28 Commissiont Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, because he will lead these people over and will enable them to inherit the land you will see.”

29 So we settled down in the valley opposite Beth Peor.s
