Israel seirer over Og, kongen i Basan

1 Så tok vi en annen retning og dro oppover veien til Basan. Da dro Og, kongen i Basan, og hele hans folk ut for å kjempe mot oss ved Edre’i. s2 Og Herren sa til meg: Frykt ikke for ham! For jeg har gitt ham og hele hans folk og hans land i din hånd. Du skal gjøre med ham som du gjorde med Sihon, amorittenes konge, som bodde i Hesjbon. 3 Så ga Herren vår Gud også Og, kongen i Basan, og hele hans folk i vår hånd. Vi slo ham så vi ikke lot noen bli tilbake eller slippe unna. 4 Og vi inntok den gang alle hans byer. Det var ikke en by uten at vi tok den fra dem, seksti byer, hele Argob-landet, Ogs rike i Basan. 5 Alle disse var befestede byer med høye murer, dobbelte porter og bommer. I tillegg tok vi en stor mengde landsbyer. 6 Og vi slo dem med bann, slik vi hadde gjort med Sihon, kongen i Hesjbon. Hver by slo vi med bann, menn og kvinner og barn. s7 Men alt feet og hærfanget fra byene tok vi til bytte. 8 Slik tok vi den gang landet fra begge amorittkongene på denne siden* av Jordan, fra Arnon-elven like til fjellet Hermon - t9 sidonierne kaller Hermon for Sirjon, og amorittene kaller det Senir. 10 Vi inntok alle byene på sletten og hele Gilead og hele Basan like til byene Salka og Edre’i i Ogs rike i Basan. 11 Og, kongen i Basan, var den siste som var tilbake av refa’ittene. Som alle vet, står hans seng i ammonittbyen Rabba. Den er av jern, og den er ni alen lang og fire alen bred, en alen regnet etter lengden av en manns underarm. s

Landet øst for Jordan blir delt

12 Dette landet inntok vi den gang. Bygdene fra Aroer, som ligger ved Arnon-elven, og halvdelen av Gilead-fjellene med byene der ga jeg til rubenittene og gadittene. s13 Resten av Gilead og hele Basan, Ogs rike, ga jeg til den halve Manasses stamme - hele Argob-landet, hele Basan, det er det som kalles refa’ittenes land. 14 Ja’ir, Manasses sønn, inntok hele Argob-landet like til gesurittenes og ma’akatittenes grenser. Og dette landet, Basanlandet, kalte han etter sitt eget navn Ja’irs teltbyer. Så har det hett til denne dag. s15 Til Makir ga jeg Gilead. s16 Til rubenittene og gadittene ga jeg landet fra Gilead til Arnon-elven, til midt i elven, og landet langsmed den, til Jabbok-elven, Ammons barns grense, 17 og ødemarken og Jordan og landet langsmed den, fra Kinnerets sjø til Ødemarkshavet, Salthavet, nedenfor Pisga-liene, mot øst. s

18 Den gang bød jeg dere og sa: Herren deres Gud har gitt dere dette landet så dere kan ta det til eie. Alle krigsdyktige menn blant dere skal nå med våpen i hånd dra fram foran deres brødre, Israels barn. s19 Bare deres koner og barn og deres fe - jeg vet at dere har mye kveg - skal bli igjen i de byene jeg har gitt dere, 20 inntil Herren lar deres brødre komme til ro likesom dere, og de har tatt det landet i eie som Herren deres Gud gir dem på den andre siden av Jordan. Da kan dere vende tilbake, hver til den eiendom jeg har gitt dere. s

21 På samme tid bød jeg Josva og sa: Du har med egne øyne sett alt det Herren deres Gud har gjort med disse to kongene. Slik vil Herren gjøre med alle de rikene du er på vei til. 22 Dere skal ikke være redde for dem, for Herren deres Gud vil selv kjempe for dere. s

Moses får ikke komme inn i landet

23 Jeg bønnfalt den gang Herren og sa: 24 Herre Herre! Du har begynt å la din tjener se din storhet og din sterke hånd. For hvor er det en gud i himmelen og på jorden som kan gjøre slike gjerninger og storverk som du? s25 La meg nå få dra over og se det gode landet på den andre siden av Jordan, dette gode fjellandet og Libanon! 26 Men Herren var vred på meg for deres skyld. Han hørte ikke på meg, men sa til meg: La det nå være nok! Tal ikke mer til meg om dette. s27 Gå opp på Pisgas topp og løft dine øyne mot vest og mot nord og mot sør og mot øst, og se vidt omkring deg! For over Jordan her skal du ikke komme. s28 Og gi Josva befaling og gjør ham frimodig og sterk! For han skal føre dette folket over. Han skal gi dem til arv det landet du skal få se. s29 Så ble vi da i dalen rett imot Bet-Peor.

Defeat of King Og of Bashan

1 Next we set out ont the route to Bashan,s but King Og of Bashan and his whole armyt came out to meet us in battle at Edrei.s2 The Lord, however, said to me, “Don’t be afraid of him because I have already given him, his whole army,t and his land to you. You will do to him exactly what you did to King Sihon of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon.”3 So the Lord our God did indeed give over to us King Og of Bashan and his whole army and we struck them down until not a single survivor was left.t4 We captured all his cities at that time – there was not a town we did not take from them – sixty cities, all the region of Argob,s the dominion of Og in Bashan.5 All of these cities were fortified by high walls, gates, and locking bars;t in addition there were a great many open villages.t6 We put all of these under divine judgmentts just as we had done to King Sihon of Heshbon – every occupied city,t including women and children.7 But all the livestock and plunder from the cities we kept for ourselves.8 So at that time we took the land of the two Amorite kings in the Transjordan from Wadi Arnon to Mount Hermons9 (the Sidonianss call Hermon Sirions and the Amorites call it Senir),s10 all the cities of the plateau, all of Gilead and Bashan as far as Salecahs and Edrei,s cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

11 Only King Og of Bashan was left of the remaining Rephaites. (It is noteworthyt that his sarcophagust was made of iron.t Does it not, indeed, still remain in Rabbaths of the Ammonites? It is thirteen and a half feett long and six feett wide according to standard measure.)t

Distribution of the Transjordanian Allotments

12 This is the land we brought under our control at that time: The territory extending from Aroerts by the Wadi Arnon and half the Gilead hill country with its cities I gave to the Reubenites and Gadites.s13 The rest of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh.s (All the region of Argob,s that is, all Bashan, is called the land of Rephaim.14 Jair, son of Manasseh, took all the Argob region as far as the border with the Geshuritess and Maacathitess (namely Bashan) and called it by his name, Havvoth-Jair,s which it retains to this very day.)15 I gave Gilead to Machir.s16 To the Reubenites and Gadites I allocated the territory extending from Gilead as far as Wadi Arnon (the exact middle of the wadi was a boundary) all the way to the Wadi Jabbok, the Ammonite border.

17 The Arabah and the Jordan Rivert were also a border, from the sea of Chinnerethts to the sea of the Arabah (that is, the Salt Sea),s beneath the watershedt of Pisgahs to the east.

Instructions to the Transjordanian Tribes

18 At that time I instructed you as follows: “The Lord your God has given you this land for your possession. You warriors are to cross over before your fellow Israelitest equipped for battle.19 But your wives, children, and livestock (of which I know you have many) may remain in the cities I have given you.20 You must fightt until the Lord gives your countrymen victoryt as he did you and they take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving them on the other side of the Jordan River. Then each of you may return to his own territory that I have given you.”21 I also commanded Joshua at the same time, “You have seen everything the Lord your God did to these two kings; het will do the same to all the kingdoms where you are going.t

22 Do not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God will personally fight for you.”

Denial to Moses of the Promised Land

23 Moreover, at that time I pleaded with the Lord,24 “O, Lord God,t you have begun to show met your greatness and strength.t (What god in heaven or earth can rival your works and mighty deeds?)25 Let me please cross over to see the good land on the other side of the Jordan River – this good hill country and the Lebanon!”t26 But the Lord was angry at me because of you and would not listen to me. Instead, het said to me, “Enough of that!t Do not speak to me anymore about this matter.27 Go up to the top of Pisgah and take a good look to the west, north, south, and east,t for you will not be allowed to cross the Jordan.28 Commissiont Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, because he will lead these people over and will enable them to inherit the land you will see.”
