Ecclesiaste 12

1 (H12-3) Ma ricordati del tuo Creatore nei giorni della tua giovinezza, prima che vengano i cattivi giorni e giungano gli anni dei quali dirai: "Io non ci ho più alcun piacere";2 (H12-4) prima che il sole, la luce, la luna e le stelle s’oscurino, e le nuvole tornino dopo la pioggia:3 (H12-5) prima dell’età in cui i guardiani della casa tremano, gli uomini forti si curvano, le macinatrici si fermano perché son ridotte a poche, quelli che guardan dalle finestre si oscurano,4 (H12-6) e i due battenti della porta si chiudono sulla strada perché diminuisce il rumore della macina; in cui l’uomo si leva al canto dell’uccello, tutte le figlie del canto s’affievoliscono,5 (H12-7) in cui uno ha paura delle alture, ha degli spaventi mentre cammina, in cui fiorisce il mandorlo, la locusta si fa pesante, e il cappero non fa più effetto perché l’uomo se ne va alla sua dimora eterna e i piagnoni percorrono le strade;6 (H12-8) prima che il cordone d’argento si stacchi, il vaso d’oro si spezzi, la brocca si rompa sulla fonte, la ruota infranta cada nel pozzo;7 (H12-9) prima che la polvere torni alla terra com’era prima, e lo spirito torni a Dio che l’ha dato.

8 (H12-10) Vanità delle vanità, dice l’Ecclesiaste, tutto è vanità.9 (H12-11) L’Ecclesiaste, oltre ad essere un savio, ha anche insegnato al popolo la scienza, e ha ponderato, scrutato e messo in ordine un gran numero di sentenze.10 (H12-12) L’Ecclesiaste s’è applicato a trovare delle parole gradevoli; esse sono state scritte con dirittura, e sono parole di verità.11 (H12-13) Le parole dei savi son come degli stimoli, e le collezioni delle sentenze sono come de’ chiodi ben piantati; esse sono date da un solo pastore.12 (H12-14) Del resto, figliuol mio, sta’ in guardia: si fanno de’ libri in numero infinito; e molto studiare è una fatica per il corpo.

13 (H12-15) Ascoltiamo dunque la conclusione di tutto il discorso: Temi Dio e osserva i suoi comandamenti, perché questo e il tutto dell’uomo.14 (H12-16) Poiché Dio farà venire in giudizio ogni opera, tutto ciò ch’è occulto, sia bene, sia male.

Fear God Now Because Old Age and Death Come Quickly

1 So remembert your Creator in the days of your youth –
beforet the difficultt days come,
and the years draw near when you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”;

2 before the sun and the lightt of the moon and the stars grow dark,
and the clouds disappeart after the rain;

3 when those who keep watch over the houset begin to tremble,t
and the virile men begin to stoop over,t
and the grinderst begin to cease because they grow few,
and those who look through the windows grow dim,t

4 and the doors along the street are shut;
when the sound of the grinding millt grows low,
and one is awakenedt by the sound of a bird,
and all theirt songst grow faint,t

5 and they are afraid of heights and the dangerst in the street;
the almond blossomst grow white,t
and the grasshoppert drags itself along,t
and the caper berryt shrivels upst –
because man goes to his eternal home,t
and the mourners go about in the streets –

6 before the silver cord is removed,
or the golden bowl is broken,
or the pitcher is shattered at the well,t
or the water wheelt is broken at the cistern –

7 and the dust returns to the earth as it was,
and the life’s breatht returns to God who gave it.

Concluding Refrain: Qoheleth Restates His Thesis

8 “Absolutely futile!”t laments the Teacher,t
“All of these thingst are futile!”ts

Concluding Epilogue: Qoheleth’s Advice is Wise

9 Not only was the Teacher wise,s
but he also taught knowledge to the people;
he carefully evaluatedt and arrangedt many proverbs.

10 The Teacher sought to find delightfult words,
and to writes accurately truthful sayings.t

11 The words of the sages are like prods,t
and the collected sayings are like firmly fixed nails;
they are given by one shepherd.

Concluding Exhortation: Fear God and Obey His Commands!

12 Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them.s
There is no end to the makingt of many books,
and much study is exhausting to the body.t

13 Having heard everything, I have reached this conclusion:t
Fear God and keep his commandments,
because this is the whole dutyt of man.

14 For God will evaluate every deed,t
including every secret thing, whether good or evil.
