Efesini 2

Allora …e adesso.

1 Una volta voi eravate morti per sempre a causa dei vostri peccati.2 Voi seguivate l’andazzo di questo mondo ed eravate proprio come tutti gli altri, pieni di peccati e obbedienti a Satana, il principe del potere che è nell’aria, che ora agisce nel cuore di quelli che si ribellano al Signore.3 Del resto, anche tutti noi eravamo tali e quali a loro, la nostra vita era la dimostrazione del male dentro di noi, e facevamo tutte quelle brutte cose che ci suggerivano le nostre passioni e i nostri cattivi pensieri. Quindi, per natura, meritavamo la stessa condanna di Dio, esattamente come tutti gli altri.4 Ma Dio, così ricco di misericordia, ci amava tanto che,5 benché fossimo spiritualmente condannati a morte per i nostri peccati, ci ha fatti vivere, resuscitando Cristo (ricordate che è soltanto per il suo dono immeritato che siamo stati salvati!).6 Con Cristo il Signore ci ha risuscitati e con lui ci ha fatto sedere nel cielo, per mostrare anche nei secoli futuri7 la straordinaria ricchezza della sua grazia, che si è manifestata in tutto ciò che ha fatto per noi per mezzo di Gesù Cristo.8 È per la sua grazia che siete stati salvati per mezzo della fede in Gesù Cristo. E ciò non viene da voi ma è dono di Dio!9 La salvezza non è la ricompensa delle nostre buone opere, affinché nessuno di noi se ne possa vantare.10 È Dio stesso che ci ha fatto così e ci ha dato nuova vita in Gesù Cristo, per farci compiere quelle buone opere che egli aveva preparato per noi fin da principio. Dio stesso ha cominciato il cambiamento in noi, rendendoci capaci di fare il bene.11 Non scordatevi mai che una volta eravate pagani, chiamati « senza Dio » e « non circoncisi » dai Giudei. (Comunque anche loro non erano puri, benché osservassero le cerimonie e i riti religiosi e si circoncidessero in segno di devozione).12 Ricordate che allora eravate senza Cristo, non appartenevate al popolo di Dio, ed eravate estranei ai patti della promessa. Perciò nel mondo eravate persone senza Dio e senza speranza.

Cristo ha gettato il ponte.

13 Ma ora appartenete a Gesù Cristo, ed anche se una volta eravate molto lontani da Dio, ora siete stati avvicinati a lui, per mezzo del sangue versato da Gesù Cristo.14 Perché Cristo stesso è la nostra via di pace. Egli ha stabilito la pace fra noi Giudei e voi pagani, e ha fatto di noi tutti un solo popolo, abbattendo la barriera che ci separava.15 Con la sua morte, egli ha messo fine alla discordia che c’era fra noi, una frattura causata dalle leggi ebraiche che favorivano i Giudei ed escludevano i pagani, perché Cristo è morto per annullare tutto il sistema delle leggi ebraiche. Allora, egli ha fuso insieme i due gruppi che si contrastavano e li ha resi parte di se stesso; da questa fusione ha formato un uomo nuovo; così, finalmente, c’è stata la pace.16 Come parte dello stesso corpo, le nostre discordie sono scomparse, perché entrambi siamo stati riconciliati con Dio; le ostilità finalmente sono state eliminate sulla croce.17 Ed egli ha portato questa buona notizia di pace, tanto a voi pagani, che eravate così lontani da lui, quanto a noi Giudei, che eravamo vicini.18 Ora tutti noi, sia Giudei che pagani, possiamo presentarci a Dio Padre uniti dallo stesso Spirito Santo, grazie a ciò che Gesù Cristo ha fatto per noi.19 Ora davanti a Dio voi non siete più stranieri né ospiti, ma fate parte del popolo e della famiglia di Dio, come ogni altro cristiano.20 Ora siete parte di quell’edificio che ha come fondamenta gli apostoli e i profeti; un edificio del quale Gesù Cristo stesso è la pietra angolare, la più importante,21 sulla quale tutto l’edificio, solidamente costruito, si va innalzando fino a diventare un tempio santo per il Signore.22 Ed anche voi, uniti a lui e a tutti gli altri, fate parte di questo edificio dove abita Dio per mezzo dello Spirito Santo.

Ephesians 2

1 And you did he make alive, when ye were dead through your trespasses and sins,2 wherein ye once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the powers of the air, of the spirit that now worketh in the sons of disobedience;3 among whom we also all once lived in the lust of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest:--4 but God, being rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace have ye been saved),6 and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus:7 that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus:8 for by grace have ye been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;9 not of works, that no man should glory.10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God afore prepared that we should walk in them.11 Wherefore remember, that once ye, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called Circumcision, in the flesh, made by hands;12 that ye were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.13 But now in Christ Jesus ye that once were far off are made nigh in the blood of Christ.14 For he is our peace, who made both one, and brake down the middle wall of partition,15 having abolished in the flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; that he might create in himself of the two one new man, so making peace;16 and might reconcile them both in one body unto God through the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:17 and he came and preached peace to you that were far off, and peace to them that were nigh:18 for through him we both have our access in one Spirit unto the Father.19 So then ye are no more strangers and sojourners, but ye are fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God,20 being built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief corner stone;21 in whom each several building, fitly framed together, groweth into a holy temple in the Lord;22 in whom ye also are builded together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.
