Efesini 4

1 Io dunque, che sono in prigione per servire il Signore, vi raccomando di vivere e d’agire in modo degno di chi è stato scelto per ricevere tali benedizioni!2 Siate sempre umili e gentili, pazienti l’uno verso l’altro, e sopportate i reciproci errori con amore.3 Fate sempre tutto il possibile per rimanere uniti col vincolo della pace nello Spirito Santo.

A ciascuno un dono diverso.

4 Noi facciamo tutti parte del medesimo corpo, abbiamo il medesimo spirito e siamo tutti stati chiamati allo stesso glorioso futuro.5 Per noi c’è soltanto un Signore, una fede, un battesimo,6 e tutti noi abbiamo lo stesso Dio e Padre che è al di sopra di tutti, in tutti e agisce per mezzo di tutti.7 Eppure Cristo ha dato a ciascuno di noi la grazia sotto forma di doni diversi, nella misura che egli stesso ha stabilito.8 A ciò si riferisce il salmista, quando dice: « Quando sei salito in alto, o Signore, hai portato con Te folle di prigionieri e hai preso doni fra gli uomini ».9 Notate, dice: Cristo « è salito » in cielo. Questo significa che prima dovette scendere, giù nelle parti inferiori della terra.10 Chi è disceso è lo stesso che e salito al di sopra di tutti i cieli allo scopo di completare ogni cosa con la sua presenza.11 Ebbene, è proprio lui che ha dato diversi doni agli uomini: alcuni hanno ricevuto la particolare capacità di essere apostoli, altri il dono della profezia, altri ancora quello di portare la gente a Cristo, aiutandola ad avere lui come proprio Salvatore; altri, invece, hanno il dono di prendersi cura di quelli che appartengono a Dio, proprio come fa un pastore con le pecore, guidandoli e insegnando loro le vie del Signore.12 Come mai Cristo ci dà queste particolari capacità di fare bene certe cose? Perché così noi, che apparteniamo a Dio, ci perfezioniamo nel servizio che facciamo per lui, rendendo forte la Chiesa, il corpo di Cristo,13 finché tutti non saremo arrivati all’unità con la stessa fede e la stessa piena conoscenza del nostro Salvatore, il Figlio di Dio. Così raggiungeremo una maturità completa, all’altezza della perfetta grandezza di Cristo.14 Allora non saremo più come bambini, sempre pronti a cambiare idea da un momento all’altro, perché qualcuno ci ha ingannato o ci ha mentito con astuzia, facendoci cadere in errore.15-16 Vivremo, invece, nella verità e nell’amore; così sotto ogni aspetto ci avvicineremo sempre più a Cristo, che è il capo del suo corpo, la Chiesa. Sotto la sua guida tutto il corpo ben collegato e tenuto unito dalle giunture starà bene, ben proporzionato e armonioso, grazie al contributo di ogni singola parte. Da Cristo, in proporzione all’attività di ogni parte, tutto il corpo riceverà quella forza che lo fa crescere nell’amore.

Vivete la nuova vita.

17 Vi prego, dunque, anzi vi scongiuro nel nome del Signore: non vivete più come quelli che non credono in Dio, con i loro pensieri vuoti e confusi!18 Essi sono lontani da Dio, perché non hanno voluto saperne di lui, perciò non possono capire le sue vie.19 A loro ormai non importa più che cosa sia giusto o sbagliato; si sono abbandonati al vizio fino a commettere ogni genere di sconcezza per i loro desideri incontentabili.20 Ma non è questo che Cristo ci ha insegnato!21 Se gli avete dato ascolto per davvero e avete imparato da lui le sue verità,22 allora sapete già che cosa dovete fare: sbarazzatevi della vostra vecchia natura che si corrompe e segue solo le passioni che ingannano, sbarazzatevene come di un vestito vecchio!23 Ora tutte le vostre inclinazioni e i vostri pensieri devono migliorare continuamente.24 Proprio così, dovete diventare uomini nuovi, creati simili a Dio per vivere una vita santa e retta. Rivestitevi allora di questa nuova natura!25 Perciò, basta con le bugie! Diciamoci invece la verità altrimenti, siccome siamo parte gli uni degli altri, quando mentiamo ai nostri fratelli, facciamo del male a noi stessi.26 Se siete in collera, attenti a non peccare, coltivando la vostra rabbia; anzi, non lasciate che il sole tramonti prima che vi sia passata,27 perché quando siete arrabbiati date un buon punto d’appiglio al diavolo.28 Se qualcuno fra voi rubava, ora non lo faccia più; si serva piuttosto delle mani per lavorare onestamente, tanto da poterne dare anche a quelli che ne hanno bisogno.29 Che nessuna cattiva parola vi esca di bocca! Piuttosto, quando è il caso, dite soltanto buone parole, che facciano bene a chi v’ascolta.30 Non rattristate lo Spirito Santo col modo in cui vivete, ricordate che da lui avete ricevuto come un sigillo, un segno da presentare il giorno in cui la redenzione sarà completa.31 Fate sparire dalla vostra vita qualsiasi amarezza, la collera e il risentimento. Evitate le ingiurie, le offese e le malignità di qualsiasi genere.32 Siate invece gentili gli uni verso gli altri, pieni di tenerezza, pronti a perdonarvi a vicenda, come anche Dio ha perdonato voi, perché appartenete a Cristo.

Ephesians 4

1 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beseech you to walk worthily of the calling wherewith ye were called,2 with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;3 giving diligence to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as also ye were called in one hope of your calling;5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in all.7 But unto each one of us was the grace given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, And gave gifts unto men.9 (Now this, He ascended, what is it but that he also descended into the lower parts of the earth?10 He that descended is the same also that ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)11 And he gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;12 for the perfecting of the saints, unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ:13 till we all attain unto the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a fullgrown man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:14 that we may be no longer children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error;15 but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, even Christ;16 from whom all the body fitly framed and knit together through that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in due measure of each several part, maketh the increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love.17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye no longer walk as the Gentiles also walk, in the vanity of their mind,18 being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their heart;19 who being past feeling gave themselves up to lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.20 But ye did not so learn Christ;21 if so be that ye heard him, and were taught in him, even as truth is in Jesus:22 that ye put away, as concerning your former manner of life, the old man, that waxeth corrupt after the lusts of deceit;23 and that ye be renewed in the spirit of your mind,24 and put on the new man, that after God hath been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.25 Wherefore, putting away falsehood, speak ye truth each one with his neighbor: for we are members one of another.26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:27 neither give place to the devil.28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have whereof to give to him that hath need.29 Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for edifying as the need may be, that it may give grace to them that hear.30 And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, in whom ye were sealed unto the day of redemption.31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and railing, be put away from you, with all malice:32 and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, even as God also in Christ forgave you.
