Israels barn blir mange

1 Dette er navnene på Israels sønner som kom til Egypt. De kom sammen med Jakob, hver med sitt hus: s2 Ruben, Simeon, Levi og Juda, 3 Issakar, Sebulon og Benjamin, 4 Dan og Naftali, Gad og Asjer. 5 De som stammet fra Jakob, var i alt sytti sjeler. Josef var allerede i Egypt. s6 Så døde Josef og alle hans brødre og hele dette slektleddet.

7 Men Israels barn var fruktbare og tiltok sterkt, de økte og ble meget tallrike. Det ble fullt av dem i landet. ss

8 Da kom det en ny konge over Egypt, og han kjente ikke til Josef. 9 Han sa til sitt folk: Se, israelittenes folk er større og mer tallrike enn vi. 10 La oss nå gå klokt til verks mot dem, så de ikke blir enda mer tallrike. For om det blir krig, vil de kanskje slå seg i lag med fiendene våre og stride mot oss og dra ut fra landet. 11 Så satte de slavefogder over dem for å plage dem med tvangsarbeid. De måtte bygge for farao to forrådsbyer, Pitom og Ra’amses. 12 Men jo mer de plaget dem, dess flere ble de og dess mer bredte de seg ut, så egypterne begynte å grue seg for Israels barn. 13 Egypterne tvang Israels barn til å trelle for seg. s14 De forbitret livet for dem med hardt arbeid i leire og tegl og med all slags arbeid ute på markene - alt det slavearbeidet som de tvang dem til å gjøre.

Farao befaler at guttebarna skal drepes

15 Og kongen i Egypt sa til de hebraiske jordmødrene - den ene av dem hette Sjifra og den andre Pua: 16 Når dere hjelper de hebraiske kvinnene til å føde, så skal dere se etter i fødestolen. Er det da en gutt, skal dere drepe ham, er det en pike, kan hun få leve. 17 Men jordmødrene fryktet Gud, de gjorde ikke som kongen i Egypt bød dem, men lot guttebarna leve. s18 Da kalte kongen i Egypt jordmødrene til seg og sa til dem: Hvorfor gjør dere dette og lar guttebarna leve? 19 Jordmødrene svarte farao: De hebraiske kvinnene er ikke som de egyptiske. De er sterkere, og før jordmoren kommer til dem, har de født. 20 Og Gud gjorde vel mot jordmødrene. Folket økte og ble meget tallrikt. 21 Og fordi jordmødrene fryktet Gud, ga han dem etterkommere. 22 Da ga farao hele sitt folk dette påbudet: Hver sønn som blir født hos Israel, skal dere kaste i Nilen, men døtrene skal dere la leve. s

Blessing during Bondage in Egypt

1 s Theset are the namess of the sons of Israelt who entered Egypt – each man with his householdt entered with Jacob:2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.5 All the peoplet who were directly descendedt from Jacob numbered seventy.s But Joseph was already in Egypt,t6 and in timet Josephts and his brothers and all that generation died.

7 The Israelites,t however,t were fruitful, increased greatly, multiplied, and became extremely strong,ts so that the land was filled with them.
8 Then a new king,s who did not know aboutt Joseph, came to powert over Egypt.9 He saidt to his people, “Look att the Israelite people, more numerous and stronger than we are!

10 Come, let’s deal wiselyts with them. Otherwiset they will continue to multiply,t and ift a war breaks out, they will ally themselves witht our enemies and fight against us and leavet the country.”
11 So they put forement over the Israelitest to oppresss them with hard labor. As a resultt they built Pithom and Ramesess as store cities for Pharaoh.12 But the more the Egyptianst oppressed them, the more they multiplied and spread.ts As a result the Egyptians loathedt the Israelites,13 and theyt made the Israelites serve rigorously.t

14 They made their lives bitters byt hard service with mortar and bricks and by all kinds of servicet in the fields. Every kind of service the Israelites were required to give was rigorous.t
15 The king of Egypt saidt to the Hebrew midwives,s one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah,t16 t “When you assistt the Hebrew women in childbirth, observe at the delivery:t If it is a son, kill him,s but if it is a daughter, she may live.”t

17 Butt the midwives feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live.t
18 Then the king of Egypt summonedt the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this and let the boys live?”t19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrews women are not like the Egyptian women – for the Hebrew woment are vigorous; they give birth before the midwife gets to them!”ts20 So God treated the midwives well,t and the people multiplied and became very strong.

21 And because the midwives feared God, he madet householdst for them.

22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “All sonst that are born you must throwt into the river, but all daughters you may let live.”ts
