2 Mooseksen 9

1 Sitten Herra sanoi Moosekselle: "Mene faraon tykö ja puhu hänelle: 'Näin sanoo Herra, hebrealaisten Jumala: Päästä minun kansani palvelemaan minua. 2 Sillä jos kieltäydyt päästämästä heitä ja vielä pidätät heitä, 3 niin katso, Herran käsi on lyövä sinun karjaasi, joka on kedolla, hevosia, aaseja, kameleita, nautoja ja lampaita ylen ankaralla ruttotaudilla. 4 Mutta Herra on tekevä erotuksen israelilaisten karjan ja egyptiläisten karjan välillä, niin ettei mitään kuole siitä, mikä on israelilaisten omaa.'" 5 Ja Herra asetti määrätyn ajan ja sanoi: "Huomenna on Herra tekevä niin tässä maassa". 6 Ja seuraavana päivänä Herra teki niin, ja kaikki Egyptin karja kuoli; mutta israelilaisten karjasta ei kuollut ainoatakaan. 7 Ja kun farao lähetti tiedustelemaan, niin katso, israelilaisten karjasta ei ollut kuollut ainoatakaan. Mutta faraon sydän kovettui, eikä hän päästänyt kansaa.

8 Sitten Herra sanoi Moosekselle ja Aaronille: "Ottakaa kahmalonne täyteen pätsin nokea, ja Mooses viskatkoon sen taivasta kohti faraon silmien edessä, 9 niin se muuttuu tomuksi, joka peittää koko Egyptin maan, ja siitä tulee ihmisiin ja karjaan märkäpaiseita kaikkialla Egyptin maassa". 10 Ja he ottivat pätsin nokea ja astuivat faraon eteen, ja Mooses viskasi sen taivasta kohti; niin märkäpaiseita tuli ihmisiin ja karjaan. 11 Eivätkä tietäjätkään voineet pitää puoliaan Moosesta vastaan paiseiden tähden, sillä paiseita oli tietäjissä samoin kuin kaikissa muissakin egyptiläisissä. 12 Mutta Herra paadutti faraon sydämen, niin ettei hän kuullut heitä, niinkuin Herra oli sanonutkin Moosekselle.

13 Sitten Herra sanoi Moosekselle: "Astu huomenaamuna varhain faraon eteen ja sano hänelle: 'Näin sanoo Herra, hebrealaisten Jumala: Päästä minun kansani palvelemaan minua. 14 Muutoin minä tällä kertaa lähetän kaikki vitsaukseni vaivaamaan sinua itseäsi, sinun palvelijoitasi ja kansaasi, tietääksesi, ettei ketään ole minun vertaistani koko maan päällä. 15 Sillä minä olisin jo ojentanut käteni ja lyönyt sinua ja sinun kansaasi ruttotaudilla, niin että olisit kokonaan hävinnyt maan päältä, 16 mutta juuri sitä varten minä olen antanut sinun säilyä, että näyttäisin sinulle voimani ja että minun nimeni julistettaisiin kaiken maan päällä. 17 Jos sinä vielä estät minun kansaani etkä päästä heitä, 18 niin katso, huomenna tähän aikaan minä annan tulla ylen ankaran raesateen, jonka kaltaista ei ole Egyptissä ollut siitä päivästä saakka, jona sen perustus pantiin, aina tähän asti. 19 Lähetä siis nyt saattamaan suojaan karjasi ja kaikki, mitä sinulla on kedolla. Sillä kaikki ihmiset ja karja, jotka ovat kedolla ja joita ei ole korjattu kotiin, joutuvat raesateen alle ja kuolevat.'" 20 Se faraon palvelijoista, joka pelkäsi Herran sanaa, toimitti silloin palvelijansa ja karjansa huoneiden suojaan; 21 mutta joka ei välittänyt Herran sanasta, se jätti palvelijansa ja karjansa kedolle.

22 Ja Herra sanoi Moosekselle: "Ojenna kätesi taivasta kohti, niin raesade kohtaa koko Egyptin maata, ihmisiä, karjaa ja kaikkia kedon kasveja Egyptin maassa". 23 Niin Mooses ojensi sauvansa taivasta kohti, ja Herra antoi jylistä ja lähetti rakeita, ja tulta iski maahan. Näin Herra antoi sataa rakeita yli Egyptin maan. 24 Ja rakeita tuli, ja tulta leimahteli rakeiden keskellä. Raesade oli ylen ankara, niin ettei sellainen ollut kohdannut koko Egyptin maata siitä ajasta saakka, jolloin se tuli asutuksi. 25 Ja rakeet löivät maahan kaikkialla Egyptin maassa kaiken, mitä kedolla oli, sekä ihmiset että karjan; ja rakeet tuhosivat kaikki maan kasvit ja pirstoivat kaikki kedon puut. 26 Ainoastaan Goosenin maata, jossa israelilaiset olivat, ei raesade kohdannut.

27 Niin farao kutsutti Mooseksen ja Aaronin ja sanoi heille: "Minä olen tehnyt syntiä tällä kertaa. Herra on oikeassa, mutta minä ja minun kansani olemme väärässä. 28 Rukoilkaa Herraa, sillä jo on meillä kyllin Jumalan jylinää ja rakeita. Minä päästän teidät, eikä teidän tarvitse enää viipyä." 29 Mooses vastasi hänelle: "Kun lähden kaupungista, niin minä ojennan käteni Herran puoleen, ja jylinä lakkaa eikä rakeita enää tule, tietääksesi, että maa on Herran. 30 Mutta et sinä eivätkä sinun palvelijasi, sen kyllä tiedän, vielä nytkään pelkää Herraa Jumalaa." 31 Niin pellava ja ohra tuhoutuivat, sillä ohra oli tähkällä ja pellava kukalla; 32 mutta nisu ja kolmitahkoinen vehnä eivät turmeltuneet, sillä ne tuleentuvat myöhemmin. 33 Ja Mooses lähti faraon luota, ulos kaupungista, ja ojensi kätensä Herran puoleen; ja jylinä ja rakeet lakkasivat, eikä sade enää vuotanut maahan. 34 Kun farao näki, että sade, rakeet ja jylinä lakkasivat, teki hän yhä edelleen syntiä ja kovensi sydämensä, sekä hän että hänen palvelijansa. 35 Niin faraon sydän paatui, eikä hän päästänyt israelilaisia, niinkuin Herra oli Mooseksen kautta sanonutkin.

Exodus 9

Dead animals

1 The Lord sent Moses with this message for the kingt of Egypt:
The Lord God of the Hebrews commands you to let his people go, so they can worship him. 2 If you keep refusing, 3 he will bring a terrible disease on your horses and donkeys, your camels and cattle, and your sheep and goats. 4 But the Lord will protect the animals that belong to the people of Israel, and none of theirs will die.

5 Tomorrow is the day the Lord has set to do this.
6 It happened the next day—all the animals belonging to the Egyptians died, but the Israelites did not lose even one.

7 When the king found out, he was still too stubborn to let the people go.

Sores


8 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron:
Take a few handfuls of ashes from a stove and let Moses throw them into the air. Be sure the king is watching.

9 The ashes will blow across the land of Egypt, causing sores to break out on people and animals.
10 So they took a few handfuls of ashes and went to the king.t Moses threw them into the air, and sores immediately broke out on the Egyptians and their animals.t 11 The magicians were suffering so much from the sores, that they could not even come to Moses.

12 Everything happened just as the Lord had told Moses—he made the king too stubborn to listen to Moses and Aaron.

Hailstones


13 The Lord told Moses to get up early the next morning and say to the king:t
The Lord God of the Hebrews commands you to let his people go, so they can worship him! 14 If you don't, he will send his worst plagues to strike you, your officials, and everyone else in your country. Then you will find out that no one can oppose the Lord. 15 In fact, he could already have sent a terrible disease and wiped you from the face of the earth.

16 But he has kept you alive, just to show you his power and to bring honour to himself everywhere in the world.t
17 You are still determined not to let the Lord's people go. 18 All right. At this time tomorrow, he will bring on Egypt the worst hailstorm in its history.

19 You had better give orders for every person and every animal in Egypt to take shelter. If they don't, they will die.
20 Some of the king's officials were frightened by what the Lord had said, and they hurried off to make sure their slaves and animals were safe.

21 But others paid no attention to his threats and left their slaves and animals out in the open.
22 Then the Lord told Moses, “Stretch your arm towards the sky, so that hailstones will fall on people, animals, and crops in the land of Egypt.” 23-24 Moses pointed his walking stick towards the sky, and hailstones started falling everywhere. Thunder roared, and lightning flashed back and forth, striking the ground. This was the worst storm in the history of Egypt.t 25 People, animals, and crops were pounded by the hailstones, and bark was stripped from trees.

26 Only Goshen, where the Israelites lived, was safe from the storm.
27 The king sent for Moses and Aaron and told them, “Now I have really sinned! My people and I are guilty, and the Lord is right.

28 We can't stand any more of this thunder and hail. Please ask the Lord to make it stop. Your people can go—you don't have to stay in Egypt any longer.”
29 Moses answered, “As soon as I leave the city, I will lift my arms in prayer. When the thunder and hail stop, you will know that the earth belongs to the Lord.

30 But I am certain that neither you nor your officials really fear the Lord God.”
31 Meanwhile, the flax and barley crops had been destroyed by the storm because they were ready to ripen.

32 But the wheat cropst ripen later, and they were not damaged.
33 After Moses left the royal palace and the city, he lifted his arms in prayer to the Lord, and the thunder, hail, and drenching rain stopped. 34 When the king realized that the storm was over, he disobeyed once more. He and his officials were so stubborn 35 that he refused to let the Israelites go. This was exactly what the Lord had said would happen.
