1 És monda az Úr Mózesnek: Menj a Faraóhoz és beszélj vele: Ezt mondja az Úr, a héberek Istene: Bocsásd el az én népemet, hogy szolgáljanak nékem: 2 Mert ha nem akarod elbocsátani és tovább is tartóztatod őket: 3 Ímé az Úr keze lészen a te mezei barmaidon, lovakon, szamarakon, tevéken, ökrökön és juhokon; igen nagy döghalál. 4 De különbséget tesz az Úr az Izráel barmai között és Égyiptom barmai között, és mindabból, a mi Izráel fiaié, egy sem vész el. 5 Időt is hagya az Úr, mondván: Holnap cselekszi az Úr ezt a dolgot a földön. 6 Meg is cselekedé az Úr ezt a dolgot másodnapon, és elhulla Égyiptomnak minden barma, de az Izráel fiainak barma közül egy sem hullott el. 7 El is külde a Faraó, és ímé egy sem hullt vala el az Izráeliták barma közül: de a Faraó szíve kemény maradt, és nem bocsátá el a népet.
8 Az Úr pedig monda Mózesnek és Áronnak: Vegyétek tele markaitokat kemenczehamuval, és szórja azt Mózes az ég felé a Faraó szeme láttára. 9 Hogy porrá legyen Égyiptomnak egész földén, s emberen és barmon hólyagosan fakadó fekéllyé legyen Égyiptomnak egész földén. 10 Vevének azért kemenczehamut és a Faraó elé állának, és Mózes az ég felé szórá azt; és lőn az emberen és barmon hólyagosan fakadó fekély. 11 És az írástudók nem állhatnak vala Mózes előtt a fekély miatt; mert fekély vala az írástudókon s mind az Égyiptombelieken. 12 De az Úr megkeményíté a Faraó szívét, és nem hallgata reájok, a mint megmondotta vala az Úr Mózesnek.
13 És monda az Úr Mózesnek: Kelj fel reggel és állj a Faraó eleibe és mondd néki: Ezt mondja az Úr, a héberek Istene: Bocsásd el az én népemet, hogy szolgáljanak nékem. 14 Mert ezúttal minden csapásomat reá bocsátom a te szívedre, a te szolgáidra és a te népedre azért, hogy megtudd, hogy nincs én hozzám hasonló az egész földön. 15 Mert ha most kinyujtanám kezemet és megvernélek téged és a te népedet döghalállal, akkor kivágattatnál a földről. 16 Ámde azért tartottalak fenn tégedet, hogy megmutassam néked az én hatalmamat, és hogy hirdessék az én nevemet az egész földön. 17 Ha tovább is feltartóztatod az én népemet és nem bocsátod el őket: 18 Ímé holnap ilyenkor igen nagy jégesőt bocsátok, a melyhez hasonló nem volt Égyiptomban az napságtól fogva hogy fundáltatott, mind ez ideig. 19 Most annakokáért küldj el, hajtasd be barmaidat és mindenedet, valamid a mezőn van; minden ember és barom, a mely a mezőn találtatik és házba nem hajtatik, - jégeső szakad arra, és meghal. 20 A ki a Faraó szolgái közűl az Úr beszédétől megfélemedék, szolgáit és barmait házakba futtatá. 21 A ki pedig nem törődék az Úr beszédével, szolgáit és barmát a mezőn hagyá.
22 Az Úr pedig monda Mózesnek: Nyújtsd ki kezedet az égre, hogy legyen jégeső Égyiptom egész földén az emberre, baromra és a mező minden fűvére, Égyiptom földén. 23 Kinyujtá azért Mózes az ő vesszejét az égre, az Úr pedig mennydörgést támaszta és jégesőt, és tűz szálla le a földre, és jégesőt bocsáta az Úr Égyiptom földére. 24 És lőn jégeső, és a tűz egymást éré az igen nagy jégeső közt, a melyhez hasonló nem volt az egész Égyiptom földén, mióta nép lakja. 25 És elveré a jégeső egész Égyiptom földén mindazt, a mi a mezőn vala, embertől baromig; a mező minden fűvét is elveré a jégeső és a mező minden fáját is egybe rontá. 26 Csak a Gósen földén, hol Izráel fiai valának, nem volt jégeső.
27 A Faraó pedig elkülde és hívatá Mózest és Áront, és monda nékik: Vétkeztem ezúttal; az Úr az igaz; én pedig és az én népem gonoszok vagyunk. 28 Imádkozzatok az Úrhoz, hogy legyen elég a mennydörgés és jégeső, és akkor elbocsátlak titeket és nem maradtok tovább. 29 Mózes pedig monda néki: Mihelyt kimegyek a városból, felemelem kezeimet az Úrhoz; megszűnnek a mennydörgések és nem lesz többé jégeső, hogy megtudd, hogy az Úré a föld. 30 De tudom, hogy te és a te szolgáid még nem féltek az Úr Istentől. 31 A len pedig és az árpa elvereték, mert az árpa kalászos, a len pedig bimbós vala. 32 De a búza és a tönköly nem vereték el, mert azok késeiek. 33 És kiméne Mózes a Faraótól a városból és felemelé kezeit az Úrhoz, és megszűnének a mennydörgések s a jégeső és eső sem ömlik vala a földre. 34 Amint látá a Faraó, hogy megszűnék az eső, meg a jégeső és a mennydörgés, ismét vétkezék és megkeményíté szívét ő és az ő szolgái. 35 És kemény maradt a Faraó szíve, és nem bocsátá el az Izráel fiait, a mint megmondotta vala az Úr Mózes által.

Dead animals
1 The Lord sent Moses with this message for the kingt of Egypt:
The Lord God of the Hebrews commands you to let his people go, so they can worship him. 2 If you keep refusing, 3 he will bring a terrible disease on your horses and donkeys, your camels and cattle, and your sheep and goats. 4 But the Lord will protect the animals that belong to the people of Israel, and none of theirs will die.
5 Tomorrow is the day the Lord has set to do this.
6 It happened the next day—all the animals belonging to the Egyptians died, but the Israelites did not lose even one.
7 When the king found out, he was still too stubborn to let the people go.Sores
8 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron:
Take a few handfuls of ashes from a stove and let Moses throw them into the air. Be sure the king is watching.
9 The ashes will blow across the land of Egypt, causing sores to break out on people and animals.
10 So they took a few handfuls of ashes and went to the king.t Moses threw them into the air, and sores immediately broke out on the Egyptians and their animals.t 11 The magicians were suffering so much from the sores, that they could not even come to Moses.
12 Everything happened just as the Lord had told Moses—he made the king too stubborn to listen to Moses and Aaron.Hailstones
13 The Lord told Moses to get up early the next morning and say to the king:t
The Lord God of the Hebrews commands you to let his people go, so they can worship him! 14 If you don't, he will send his worst plagues to strike you, your officials, and everyone else in your country. Then you will find out that no one can oppose the Lord. 15 In fact, he could already have sent a terrible disease and wiped you from the face of the earth.
16 But he has kept you alive, just to show you his power and to bring honour to himself everywhere in the world.t
17 You are still determined not to let the Lord's people go. 18 All right. At this time tomorrow, he will bring on Egypt the worst hailstorm in its history.
19 You had better give orders for every person and every animal in Egypt to take shelter. If they don't, they will die.
20 Some of the king's officials were frightened by what the Lord had said, and they hurried off to make sure their slaves and animals were safe.
21 But others paid no attention to his threats and left their slaves and animals out in the open.
22 Then the Lord told Moses, “Stretch your arm towards the sky, so that hailstones will fall on people, animals, and crops in the land of Egypt.” 23-24 Moses pointed his walking stick towards the sky, and hailstones started falling everywhere. Thunder roared, and lightning flashed back and forth, striking the ground. This was the worst storm in the history of Egypt.t 25 People, animals, and crops were pounded by the hailstones, and bark was stripped from trees.
26 Only Goshen, where the Israelites lived, was safe from the storm.
27 The king sent for Moses and Aaron and told them, “Now I have really sinned! My people and I are guilty, and the Lord is right.
28 We can't stand any more of this thunder and hail. Please ask the Lord to make it stop. Your people can go—you don't have to stay in Egypt any longer.”
29 Moses answered, “As soon as I leave the city, I will lift my arms in prayer. When the thunder and hail stop, you will know that the earth belongs to the Lord.
30 But I am certain that neither you nor your officials really fear the Lord God.”
31 Meanwhile, the flax and barley crops had been destroyed by the storm because they were ready to ripen.
32 But the wheat cropst ripen later, and they were not damaged.
33 After Moses left the royal palace and the city, he lifted his arms in prayer to the Lord, and the thunder, hail, and drenching rain stopped. 34 When the king realized that the storm was over, he disobeyed once more. He and his officials were so stubborn 35 that he refused to let the Israelites go. This was exactly what the Lord had said would happen.
