Esdra 9

1 Or quando queste cose furon finite, i capi s’accostarono a me, dicendo: "Il popolo d’Israele, i sacerdoti e i Leviti non si son separati dai popoli di questi paesi, ma si conformano alle abominazioni de’ Cananei, degli Hittei, de’ Ferezei, dei Gebusei, degli Ammoniti, dei Moabiti, degli Egiziani e degli Amorei.2 Poiché hanno preso delle loro figliuole per sé e per i propri figliuoli, e hanno mescolata la stirpe santa coi popoli di questi paesi; e i capi e i magistrati sono stati i primi a commettere questa infedeltà".3 Quand’io ebbi udito questo, mi stracciai le vesti e il mantello, mi strappai i capelli della testa e della barba, e mi misi a sedere, costernato.4 Allora tutti quelli che tremavano alle parole dell’Iddio d’Israele si radunarono presso di me a motivo della infedeltà di quelli ch’eran tornati dalla cattività; e io rimasi così seduto e costernato, fino al tempo dell’oblazione della sera.

5 E al momento dell’oblazione della sera, m’alzai dalla mia umiliazione, colle vesti e col mantello stracciati; caddi in ginocchi; stesi le mani verso l’Eterno, il mio Dio e dissi:6 "O mio Dio, io son confuso; e mi vergogno, o mio Dio, d’alzare a te la mia faccia; poiché le nostre iniquità si son moltiplicate fino al disopra del nostro capo, e la nostra colpa è sì grande che arriva al cielo.7 Dal tempo de’ nostri padri fino al dì d’oggi siamo stati grandemente colpevoli; e a motivo delle nostre iniquità, noi, i nostri re, i nostri sacerdoti, siamo stati dati in mano dei re dei paesi stranieri, in balìa della spada, dell’esilio, della rapina e dell’obbrobrio, come anch’oggi si vede.8 Ed ora, per un breve istante, l’Eterno, il nostro Dio, ci ha fatto grazia, lasciandoci alcuni superstiti, e concedendoci un asilo nel suo santo luogo, affin d’illuminare gli occhi nostri, e di darci un po’ di respiro in mezzo al nostro servaggio.9 Poiché noi siamo schiavi; ma il nostro Dio non ci ha abbandonati nel nostro servaggio; che anzi ha fatto sì che trovassimo benevolenza presso i re di Persia, i quali ci hanno dato tanto respiro da poter rimettere in piè la casa dell’Iddio nostro e restaurarne le rovine, e ci hanno concesso un ricovero in Giuda ed in Gerusalemme.10 Ed ora, o nostro Dio, che direm noi dopo questo? Poiché noi abbiamo abbandonati i tuoi comandamenti,11 quelli che ci desti per mezzo de’ tuoi servi i profeti, dicendo: Il paese nel quale entrate per prenderne possesso, è un paese reso impuro dalla impurità dei popoli di questi paesi, dalle abominazioni con le quali l’hanno riempito da un capo all’altro con le loro contaminazioni.12 Or dunque non date le vostre figliuole ai loro figliuoli, e non prendete le loro figliuole per i vostri figliuoli, e non cercate mai la loro prosperità né il loro benessere, e così diventerete forti, mangerete i migliori prodotti del paese, e lo lascerete in retaggio perpetuo ai vostri figliuoli.13 Ora, dopo tutto quello che ci è avvenuto a motivo delle nostre azioni malvage e delle nostre grandi colpe, giacché tu, o nostro Dio, ci hai puniti meno severamente di quanto le nostre iniquità avrebbero meritato, e hai conservato di noi un residuo come questo,14 torneremmo noi di nuovo a violare i tuoi comandamenti e ad imparentarci coi popoli che commettono queste abominazioni? L’ira tua non s’infiammerebbe essa contro di noi sino a consumarci e a non lasciar più né residuo né superstite?15 O Eterno, Dio d’Israele, tu sei giusto, e perciò noi siamo oggi ridotti ad un residuo di scampati. Ed eccoci dinanzi a te a riconoscere la nostra colpa; poiché per cagion d’essa, noi non potremmo sussistere nel tuo cospetto!"

A Prayer of Ezra

1 Now when these things had been completed, the leaders approached me and said, “The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated themselves from the local residentst who practice detestable things similar to those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

2 Indeed, they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy racet has become intermingled with the local residents. Worse still, the leaders and the officials have been at the forefront of all of this!”
3 When I heard this report, I tore my tunic and my robe and ripped out some of the hair from my head and beard. Then I sat down, quite devastated.

4 Everyone who held the words of the God of Israel in awet gathered around me because of the unfaithful acts of the people of the exile.t Devastated, I continued to sit there until the evening offering.
5 At the time of the evening offering I got up from my self-abasement,t with my tunic and robe torn, and then dropped to my knees and spread my hands to the Lord my God.

6 I prayed,t
“O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face to you, my God! For our iniquities have climbed higher than our heads, and our guilt extends to the heavens.

7 From the days of our fathers until this very day our guilt has been great. Because of our iniquities we, along with our kings ands priests, have been delivered over by the local kingst to sword, captivity, plunder, and embarrassment – right up to the present time.
8 “But now brieflyt we have received mercy from the Lord our God, in that he has left us a remnant and has given us a secure positiont in his holy place. Thus our God has enlightened our eyest and has given us a little relief in our time of servitude.

9 Although we are slaves, our God has not abandoned us in our servitude. He has extended kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, in that he has revived ust to restore the temple of our God and to raiset up its ruins and to give us a protective wall in Judah and Jerusalem.s
10 “And now what are we able to say after this, our God? For we have forsaken your commandments11 which you commanded us through your servants the prophets with these words:t ‘The land that you are entering to possess is a land defiled by the impurities of the local residents!t With their abominations they have filled it from one end to the other with their filthiness.

12 Therefore do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons, and do not take their daughters in marriage for your sons. Do not ever seek their peace or welfare, so that you may be strong and may eat the good of the land and may leave it as an inheritance for your childrent forever.’
13 “Everything that has happened to us has come about because of our wicked actions and our great guilt. Even so, our God, you have exercised restraintt toward our iniquities and have given us a remnant such as this.14 Shall we once again break your commandments and intermarry with these abominable peoples? Would you not be so angered by us that you would wipe us out, with no survivor or remnant?

15 O Lord God of Israel, you are righteous, for we are left as a remnant this day. Indeed, we stand before you in our guilt. However, because of this guiltt no one can really stand before you.”
