Esdras 9

1 Y ACABADAS estas cosas, los príncipes se llegaron á mí, diciendo: El pueblo de Israel, y los sacerdotes y levitas, no se han apartado de los pueblos de las tierras, de los Cananeos, Hetheos, Pherezeos, Jebuseos, Ammonitas, y Moabitas, Egipcios, y Amorrheos, haciendo conforme á sus abominaciones.2 Porque han tomado de sus hijas para sí y para sus hijos, y la simiente santa ha sido mezclada con los pueblos de las tierras; y la mano de los príncipes y de los gobernadores ha sido la primera en esta prevaricación.3 Lo cual oyendo yo, rasgué mi vestido y mi manto, y arranqué de los cabellos de mi cabeza y de mi barba, y sentéme atónito.4 Y juntáronse á mí todos los temerosos de las palabras del Dios de Israel, á causa de la prevaricación de los de la transmigración; mas yo estuve sentado atónito hasta el sacrificio de la tarde.

5 Y al sacrificio de la tarde levantéme de mi aflicción; y habiendo rasgado mi vestido y mi manto, postréme de rodillas, y extendí mis palmas á Jehová mi Dios,

6 Y dije: Dios mío, confuso y avergonzado estoy para levantar, oh Dios mío, mi rostro á ti: porque nuestras iniquidades se han multiplicado sobre nuestra cabeza, y nuestros delitos han crecido hasta el cielo.

7 Desde los días de nuestros padres hasta este día estamos en grande culpa; y por nuestras iniquidades nosotros, nuestros reyes, y nuestros sacerdotes, hemos sido entregados en manos de los reyes de las tierras, á cuchillo, á cautiverio, y á robo, y á confusión de rostro, como hoy día.

8 Y ahora como por un breve momento fué la misericordia de Jehová nuestro Dios, para hacer que nos quedase un resto libre, y para darnos estaca en el lugar de su santuario, á fin de alumbrar nuestros ojos nuestro Dios, y darnos una poca de vida en nuestra servidumbre.

9 Porque siervos éramos: mas en nuestra servidumbre no nos desamparó nuestro Dios, antes inclinó sobre nosotros misericordia delante de los reyes de Persia, para que se nos diese vida para alzar la casa de nuestro Dios, y para hacer restaurar sus asolamientos, y para darnos vallado en Judá y en Jerusalem.

10 Mas ahora, ¿qué diremos, oh Dios nuestro, después de esto? porque nosotros hemos dejado tus mandamientos,

11 Los cuales prescribiste por mano de tus siervos los profetas, diciendo: La tierra á la cual entráis para poseerla, tierra inmunda es á causa de la inmundicia de los pueblos de aquellas regiones, por las abominaciones de que la han henchido de uno á otro extremo con su inmundicia.

12 Ahora pues, no daréis vuestras hijas á los hijos de ellos, ni sus hijas tomaréis para vuestros hijos, ni procuraréis su paz ni su bien para siempre; para que seáis corroborados, y comáis el bien de la tierra, y la dejéis por heredad á vuestros hijos para siempre.

13 Mas después de todo lo que nos ha sobrevenido á causa de nuestras malas obras, y á causa de nuestro grande delito, ya que tú, Dios nuestro, estorbaste que fuésemos oprimidos bajo de nuestras iniquidades, y nos diste este tal efugio;

14 ¿Hemos de volver á infringir tus mandamientos, y á emparentar con los pueblos de estas abominaciones? ¿No te ensañarías contra nosotros hasta consumirnos, sin que quedara resto ni escapatoria?

15 Jehová, Dios de Israel, tú eres justo: pues que hemos quedado algunossalvos, como este día, henos aquí delante de ti en nuestros delitos; porque no es posible subsistir en tu presencia á causa de esto.

Ezra 9

A Prayer of Ezra

1 Now when these things had been completed, the leaders approached me and said, “The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated themselves from the local residentst who practice detestable things similar to those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

2 Indeed, they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy racet has become intermingled with the local residents. Worse still, the leaders and the officials have been at the forefront of all of this!”
3 When I heard this report, I tore my tunic and my robe and ripped out some of the hair from my head and beard. Then I sat down, quite devastated.

4 Everyone who held the words of the God of Israel in awet gathered around me because of the unfaithful acts of the people of the exile.t Devastated, I continued to sit there until the evening offering.
5 At the time of the evening offering I got up from my self-abasement,t with my tunic and robe torn, and then dropped to my knees and spread my hands to the Lord my God.

6 I prayed,t
“O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face to you, my God! For our iniquities have climbed higher than our heads, and our guilt extends to the heavens.

7 From the days of our fathers until this very day our guilt has been great. Because of our iniquities we, along with our kings ands priests, have been delivered over by the local kingst to sword, captivity, plunder, and embarrassment – right up to the present time.
8 “But now brieflyt we have received mercy from the Lord our God, in that he has left us a remnant and has given us a secure positiont in his holy place. Thus our God has enlightened our eyest and has given us a little relief in our time of servitude.

9 Although we are slaves, our God has not abandoned us in our servitude. He has extended kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, in that he has revived ust to restore the temple of our God and to raiset up its ruins and to give us a protective wall in Judah and Jerusalem.s
10 “And now what are we able to say after this, our God? For we have forsaken your commandments11 which you commanded us through your servants the prophets with these words:t ‘The land that you are entering to possess is a land defiled by the impurities of the local residents!t With their abominations they have filled it from one end to the other with their filthiness.

12 Therefore do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons, and do not take their daughters in marriage for your sons. Do not ever seek their peace or welfare, so that you may be strong and may eat the good of the land and may leave it as an inheritance for your childrent forever.’
13 “Everything that has happened to us has come about because of our wicked actions and our great guilt. Even so, our God, you have exercised restraintt toward our iniquities and have given us a remnant such as this.14 Shall we once again break your commandments and intermarry with these abominable peoples? Would you not be so angered by us that you would wipe us out, with no survivor or remnant?

15 O Lord God of Israel, you are righteous, for we are left as a remnant this day. Indeed, we stand before you in our guilt. However, because of this guiltt no one can really stand before you.”
