1 O Galati insensati, chi v'ha ammaliati, voi, dinanzi agli occhi dei quali Gesù Cristo crocifisso è stato ritratto al vivo? 2 Questo soltanto desidero sapere da voi: avete voi ricevuto lo Spirito per la via delle opere della legge o per la predicazione della fede? 3 Siete voi così insensati? Dopo aver cominciato con lo Spirito, volete ora raggiungere la perfezione con la carne? 4 Avete voi sofferto tante cose invano? se pure è proprio invano. 5 Colui dunque che vi somministra lo Spirito ed opera fra voi dei miracoli, lo fa Egli per la via delle opere della legge o per la predicazione della fede? 6 Siccome Abramo credette a Dio e ciò gli fu messo in conto di giustizia, 7 riconoscete anche voi che coloro i quali hanno la fede, son figliuoli d'Abramo. 8 E la Scrittura, prevedendo che Dio giustificherebbe i Gentili per la fede, preannunziò ad Abramo questa buona novella: In te saranno benedette tutte le genti. 9 Talché coloro che hanno la fede, sono benedetti col credente Abramo. 10 Poiché tutti coloro che si basano sulle opere della legge sono sotto maledizione; perché è scritto: Maledetto chiunque non persevera in tutte le cose scritte nel libro della legge per metterle in pratica! 11 Or che nessuno sia giustificato per la legge dinanzi a Dio, è manifesto perché il giusto vivrà per fede. 12 Ma la legge non si basa sulla fede; anzi essa dice: Chi avrà messe in pratica queste cose, vivrà per via di esse. 13 Cristo ci ha riscattati dalla maledizione della legge, essendo divenuto maledizione per noi (poiché sta scritto: Maledetto chiunque è appeso al legno), 14 affinché la benedizione d'Abramo venisse sui Gentili in Cristo Gesù, affinché ricevessimo, per mezzo della fede, lo Spirito promesso. 15 Fratelli, io parlo secondo le usanze degli uomini: Un patto che sia stato validamente concluso, sia pur soltanto un patto d'uomo, nessuno l'annulla o vi aggiunge alcun che. 16 Or le promesse furono fatte ad Abramo e alla sua progenie. Non dice: ‘E alla progenie’, come se si trattasse di molte; ma come parlando di una sola, dice: ‘E alla tua progenie’, ch'è Cristo. 17 Or io dico: Un patto già prima debitamente stabilito da Dio, la legge, che venne quattrocento trent'anni dopo, non lo invalida in guisa da annullare la promessa. 18 Perché, se l'eredità viene dalla legge, essa non viene più dalla promessa; ora ad Abramo Dio l'ha donata per via di promessa. 19 Che cos'è dunque la legge? Essa fu aggiunta a motivo delle trasgressioni, finché venisse la progenie alla quale era stata fatta la promessa; e fu promulgata per mezzo d'angeli, per mano d'un mediatore. 20 Ora, un mediatore non è mediatore d'uno solo; Dio, invece, è uno solo. 21 La legge è essa dunque contraria alle promesse di Dio? Così non sia; perché se fosse stata data una legge capace di produrre la vita, allora sì, la giustizia sarebbe venuta dalla legge; 22 ma la Scrittura ha rinchiuso ogni cosa sotto peccato, affinché i beni promessi alla fede in Gesù Cristo fossero dati ai credenti. 23 Ma prima che venisse la fede eravamo tenuti rinchiusi in custodia sotto la legge, in attesa della fede che doveva esser rivelata. 24 Talché la legge è stata il nostro pedagogo per condurci a Cristo, affinché fossimo giustificati per fede. 25 Ma ora che la fede è venuta, noi non siamo più sotto pedagogo; 26 perché siete tutti figliuoli di Dio, per la fede in Cristo Gesù. 27 Poiché voi tutti che siete stati battezzati in Cristo vi siete rivestiti di Cristo. 28 Non c'è qui né Giudeo né Greco; non c'è né schiavo né libero; non c'è né maschio né femmina; poiché voi tutti siete uno in Cristo Gesù. 29 E se siete di Cristo, siete dunque progenie d'Abramo; eredi, secondo la promessa.

GALATIANS 3

Faith Is the Only Way

1 You stupid Galatians! I told you exactly how Jesus Christ was nailed to a cross. Has someone now put an evil spell on you? 2 I want to know only one thing. How were you given God's Spirit? Was it by obeying the Law of Moses or by hearing about Christ and having faith in him? 3 How can you be so stupid? Do you think that by yourself you can complete what God's Spirit started in you? 4 Have you gone through all of this for nothing? Is it all really for nothing?

5 God gives you his Spirit and works miracles in you. But does he do this because you obey the Law of Moses or because you have heard about Christ and have faith in him?
6  t The Scriptures say that God accepted Abraham because Abraham had faith. 7 t And so, you should understand that everyone who has faith is a child of Abraham.t 8 t Long ago the Scriptures said God would accept the Gentiles because of their faith. This is why God told Abraham the good news that all nations would be blessed because of him.

9 This means everyone who has faith will share in the blessings given to Abraham because of his faith.
10  t Anyone who tries to please God by obeying the Law is under a curse. The Scriptures say, “Everyone who doesn't obey everything in the Law is under a curse.”

11 t No one can please God by obeying the Law. The Scriptures also say, “The people God accepts because of their faith will live.”t
12  t The Law isn't based on faith. It promises life only to people who obey its commands. 13 t But Christ rescued us from the Law's curse, when he became a curse in our place. This is because the Scriptures say that anyone who is nailed to a tree is under a curse.

14 And because of what Jesus Christ has done, the blessing promised to Abraham was taken to the Gentiles. This happened so that by faith we would be given the promised Holy Spirit.

The Law and the Promise

18 t If we have to obey the Law in order to receive God's blessings, those blessings don't really come to us because of God's promise. But God was kind to Abraham and made him a promise.
19 What is the use of the Law? It was given later to show that we sin. But it was only supposed to last until the coming of that descendantt who was given the promise. In fact, angels gave the Law to Moses, and he gave it to the people.

20 There is only one God, and the Law did not come directly from him.

Slaves and Children

22 But the Scriptures say that sin controls everyone, so that God's promises will be for anyone who has faith in Jesus Christ.
23 The Law controlled us and kept us under its power until the time came when we would have faith. 24 In fact, the Law was to be our teacher until Christ came. Then we could have faith and be acceptable to God.

25 But once a person has learned to have faith, there is no more need to have the Law as a teacher.
26 All of you are God's children because of your faith in Christ Jesus. 27 And when you were baptized, it was as though you had put on Christ in the same way you put on new clothes. 28 Faith in Christ Jesus is what makes each of you equal with each other, whether you are a Jew or a Greek, a slave or a free person, a man or a woman. 29 t So if you belong to Christ, you are now part of Abraham's family, t and you will be given what God has promised.
