第19章

1 そのふたりのみ使は夕暮にソドムに着いた。そのときロトはソドムの門にすわっていた。ロトは彼らを見て、立って迎え、地に伏して、2 言った、「わが主よ、どうぞしもべの家に立寄って足を洗い、お泊まりください。そして朝早く起きてお立ちください」。彼らは言った、「いや、われわれは広場で夜を過ごします」。3 しかしロトがしいて勧めたので、彼らはついに彼の所に寄り、家にはいった。ロトは彼らのためにふるまいを設け、種入れぬパンを焼いて食べさせた。4 ところが彼らの寝ないうちに、ソドムの町の人々は、若い者も老人も、民がみな四方からきて、その家を囲み、5 ロトに叫んで言った、「今夜おまえの所にきた人々はどこにいるか。それをここに出しなさい。われわれは彼らを知るであろう」。6 ロトは入口におる彼らの所に出て行き、うしろの戸を閉じて、7 言った、「兄弟たちよ、どうか悪い事はしないでください。8 わたしにまだ男を知らない娘がふたりあります。わたしはこれをあなたがたに、さし出しますから、好きなようにしてください。ただ、わたしの屋根の下にはいったこの人たちには、何もしないでください」。9 彼らは言った、「退け」。また言った、「この男は渡ってきたよそ者であるのに、いつも、さばきびとになろうとする。それで、われわれは彼らに加えるよりも、おまえに多くの害を加えよう」。彼らはロトの身に激しく迫り、進み寄って戸を破ろうとした。10 その時、かのふたりは手を伸べてロトを家の内に引き入れ、戸を閉じた。11 そして家の入口におる人々を、老若の別なく打って目をくらましたので、彼らは入口を捜すのに疲れた。12 ふたりはロトに言った、「ほかにあなたの身内の者がここにおりますか。あなたのむこ、むすこ、娘およびこの町におるあなたの身内の者を、皆ここから連れ出しなさい。13 われわれがこの所を滅ぼそうとしているからです。人々の叫びが主の前に大きくなり、主はこの所を滅ぼすために、われわれをつかわされたのです」。14 そこでロトは出て行って、その娘たちをめとるむこたちに告げて言った、「立ってこの所から出なさい。主がこの町を滅ぼされます」。しかしそれはむこたちには戯むれごとに思えた。15 夜が明けて、み使たちはロトを促して言った　　「立って、ここにいるあなたの妻とふたりの娘とを連れ出しなさい。そうしなければ、あなたもこの町の不義のために滅ぼされるでしょう」。16 彼はためらっていたが、主は彼にあわれみを施されたので、かのふたりは彼の手と、その妻の手と、ふたりの娘の手を取って連れ出し、町の外に置いた。17 彼らを外に連れ出した時そのひとりは言った、「のがれて、自分の命を救いなさい。うしろをふりかえって見てはならない。低地にはどこにも立ち止まってはならない。山にのがれなさい。そうしなければ、あなたは滅びます」。18 ロトは彼らに言った、「わが主よ、どうか、そうさせないでください。19 しもべはすでにあなたの前に恵みを得ました。あなたはわたしの命を救って、大いなるいつくしみを施されました。しかしわたしは山まではのがれる事ができません。災が身に追い迫ってわたしは死ぬでしょう。20 あの町をごらんなさい。逃げていくのに近く、また小さい町です。どうかわたしをそこにのがれさせてください。それは小さいではありませんか。そうすればわたしの命は助かるでしょう」。21 み使は彼に言った、「わたしはこの事でもあなたの願いをいれて、あなたの言うその町は滅ぼしません。22 急いでそこへのがれなさい。あなたがそこに着くまでは、わたしは何事もすることができません」。これによって、その町の名はゾアルと呼ばれた。23 ロトがゾアルに着いた時、日は地の上にのぼった。24 主は硫黄と火とを主の所すなわち天からソドムとゴモラの上に降らせて、25 これらの町と、すべての低地と、その町々のすべての住民と、その地にはえている物を、ことごとく滅ぼされた。26 しかしロトの妻はうしろを顧みたので塩の柱になった。27 アブラハムは朝早く起き、さきに主の前に立った所に行って、28 ソドムとゴモラの方、および低地の全面をながめると、その地の煙が、かまどの煙のように立ちのぼっていた。29 こうして神が低地の町々をこぼたれた時、すなわちロトの住んでいた町々を滅ぼされた時、神はアブラハムを覚えて、その滅びの中からロトを救い出された。30 ロトはゾアルを出て上り、ふたりの娘と共に山に住んだ。ゾアルに住むのを恐れたからである。彼はふたりの娘と共に、ほら穴の中に住んだ。31 時に姉が妹に言った、「わたしたちの父は老い、またこの地には世のならわしのように、わたしたちの所に来る男はいません。32 さあ、父に酒を飲ませ、共に寝て、父によって子を残しましょう」。33 彼女たちはその夜、父に酒を飲ませ、姉がはいって父と共に寝た。ロトは娘が寝たのも、起きたのも知らなかった。34 あくる日、姉は妹に言った、「わたしは昨夜、父と寝ました。わたしたちは今夜もまた父に酒を飲ませましょう。そしてあなたがはいって共に寝なさい。わたしたちは父によって子を残しましょう」。35 彼らはその夜もまた父に酒を飲ませ、妹が行って父と共に寝た。ロトは娘の寝たのも、起きたのも知らなかった。36 こうしてロトのふたりの娘たちは父によってはらんだ。37 姉娘は子を産み、その名をモアブと名づけた。これは今のモアブびとの先祖である。38 妹もまた子を産んで、その名をベニアンミと名づけた。これは今のアンモンびとの先祖である。

Genesis 19

The evil city of Sodom

1 That evening the two angelst arrived in Sodom, while Lot was sitting near the city gate.t When Lot saw them, he got up, bowed down low,

2 and said, “Gentlemen, I am your servant. Please come to my home. You can wash your feet, spend the night, and be on your way in the morning.”
They told him, “No, we'll spend the night in the city square.”

3 But Lot kept insisting, until they finally agreed and went home with him. He baked some bread,t cooked a meal, and they ate.
4 Before Lot and his guests could go to bed, every man in Sodom, young and old, came and stood outside his house

5 and started shouting, “Where are your visitors? Send them out, so we can have sex with them!”t
6 Lot went outside and shut the door behind him. 7 Then he said, “Friends, please don't do such a terrible thing!

8 I have two daughters who have never been married. I'll bring them out, and you can do what you want with them. But don't harm these men. They are guests in my home.”

9 “Don't get in our way,” the crowd answered. “You're an outsider. What right do you have to order us around? We'll do worse things to you than we're going to do to them.”
The crowd kept arguing with Lot. Finally, they rushed towards the door to break it down. 10 But the two angels in the house reached out and pulled Lot safely inside.

11 Then they struck everyone in the crowd blind, and none of them could even find the door.t

12-13 The two angels said to Lot, “The Lord has heard many terrible things about the people of Sodom, and he has sent us here to destroy the city. Take your family and leave. Take every relative you have in the city, as well as the men your daughters are going to marry.”

14 Lot went to the men who were engaged to his daughters and said, “Hurry and get out of here! The Lord is going to destroy this city.” But they thought he was joking, and they laughed at him.
15 Early the next morning the two angels tried to make Lot hurry and leave. They said, “Take your wife and your two daughters and get out of here as fast as you can! If you don't, every one of you will be killed when the Lord destroys the city.” 16 At first, Lot just stood there. But the Lord wanted to save him. So the angels took Lot, his wife, and his two daughters by the hand and led them out of the city.t

17 When they were outside, one of the angels said, “Run for your lives! Don't even look back. And don't stop in the valley. Run to the hills, where you will be safe.”
18-19 Lot answered, “You have done us a great favour, sir. You have saved our lives, but please don't make us go to the hills. That's too far away. The city will be destroyed before we can get there, and we will be killed when it happens.

20 There's a town near here. It's only a small place, but my family and I will be safe, if you let us go there.”
21 “All right, go there,” he answered. “I won't destroy that town.

22 Hurry! Run! I can't do anything until you are safely there.”
The town was later called Zoart because Lot had said it was small.

Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed

25 He destroyed those cities and everyone who lived in them, as well as their land and the trees and grass that grew there.

26 On the way, Lot's wife looked back and was turned into a block of salt.t
27 That same morning Abraham got up and went to the place where he had stood and spoken with the Lord.

28 He looked down towards Sodom and Gomorrah and saw smoke rising from all over the land—it was like a flaming furnace.

29 When God destroyed the cities of the valley where Lot lived, he remembered his promise to Abraham and saved Lot from the terrible destruction.

Moab and Ammon

33 That night they got their father drunk, and the elder daughter got in bed with him, but he was too drunk even to know she was there.
34 The next day the elder daughter said to her sister, “I slept with my father last night. We'll get him drunk again tonight, so you can go to bed with him, and we can each have a child.”

35 That night they got their father drunk, and this time the younger sister slept with him. But once again he was too drunk even to know she was there.
36 That's how Lot's two daughters had their children. 37 The elder daughter named her son Moab,t and he is the ancestor of the Moabites. 38 The younger daughter named her son Benammi,t and he is the ancestor of the Ammonites.
