Lettre aux Hébreux 12

Dieu notre Père

1 Quant à nous, nous sommes entourés de cette grande foule de témoinst. Débarrassons-nous donc de tout ce qui alourdit notre marche, en particulier du péché qui s’accroche si facilement à nous, et courons résolument la course qui nous est proposée.

2 Gardons les yeux fixés sur Jésus, dont notre foi dépend du commencement à la fin. Il a accepté de mourir sur la croix, sans tenir compte de la honte attachée à une telle mort, parce qu’il avait en vue la joie qui lui était réservée ; et maintenant il siège à la droite du trône de Dieut.
3 Pensez à lui, à la façon dont il a supporté une telle opposition de la part des pécheurs. Et ainsi, vous ne vous laisserez pas abattre, vous ne vous découragerez pas. 4 Car, dans votre combat contre le péché, vous n’avez pas encore dû lutter jusqu’à la mort.

5 Avez-vous oublié l’exhortation que Dieu vous adresse comme à ses fils ?
« Mon fils, ne crains pas d’être corrigé par le Seigneur,
et ne te décourage pas quand il t’adresse des reproches.

6 Car le Seigneur corrige celui qu’il aime,
il frappe celui qu’il reconnaît comme son filst. »
7 Supportez les souffrances par lesquelles Dieu vous corrige : il vous traite en effet comme ses fils. Existe-t-il un fils que son père ne corrige pas ? 8 Si vous n’êtes pas corrigés comme le sont tous ses fils, alors vous n’êtes pas de vrais fils mais des enfants illégitimes. 9 Rappelons-nous nos pères terrestres : ils nous corrigeaient et nous les respections. Nous devons donc, à plus forte raison, nous soumettre à notre Père céleste pour en recevoir la vie. 10 Nos pères nous corrigeaient pour peu de temps, comme ils le jugeaient bon. Mais Dieu nous corrige pour notre bien, afin que nous ayons part à sa sainteté.

11 Quand nous sommes corrigés, il nous semble au moment même que c’est là une cause de tristesse et non de joie. Mais plus tard, ceux qui ont reçu une telle formation bénéficient de l’effet qu’elle produit : la paix associée à une vie juste.

Recommandations et avertissements

13 Engagez vos pas sur des sentiers bien droitst, afin que le pied boiteux ne se démette pas, mais qu’il guérisse plutôt.
14 Efforcez-vous d’être en paix avec tout le monde et de mener une vie sainte ; car, sans cela, aucun de vous ne pourra voir le Seigneur. 15 Prenez garde que personne ne se détourne de la grâce de Dieu. Que personne ne devienne comme une plante nuisible, vénéneuse, qui pousse et empoisonne beaucoup de genst. 16 Qu’aucun de vous ne soit immoral, que personne ne méprise les choses sacrées, comme Ésaü qui, pour un seul repas, vendit son droit de fils aîné.

17 Plus tard, vous le savez, il voulut recevoir la bénédiction de son père, mais il fut repoussé. Il ne trouva aucun moyen de changer la situation, bien qu’il l’ait cherché en pleurantt.
18 Vous ne vous êtes pas approchés de quelque chose qu’on pouvait toucher, le mont Sinaï, avec son feu ardent, l’obscurité et les ténèbres, l’orage, 19 le bruit d’une trompette et le son d’une voix. Quand les Israélites entendirent cette voix, ils demandèrent qu’on ne leur adresse pas un mot de plust. 20 En effet, ils ne pouvaient pas supporter cet ordre : « Tout être qui touchera la montagne, même s’il s’agit d’un animal, sera tué à coups de pierres. »

21 Le spectacle était si terrifiant que Moïse dit : « Je tremble, tellement je suis effrayét ! »
22 Mais vous vous êtes approchés de la montagne de Sion et de la cité du Dieu vivant, la Jérusalem céleste, avec ses milliers d’anges. 23 Vous vous êtes approchés d’une assemblée en fête, celle des fils premiers-nés de Dieu, dont les noms sont écrits dans les cieux. Vous vous êtes approchés de Dieu, le juge de tous les humains, et des esprits des êtres justes, parvenus à la perfection.

24 Vous vous êtes approchés de Jésus, l’intermédiaire de l’alliance nouvelle, et de son sang répandu qui parle d’une manière plus favorable que celui d’Abelt.
25 Prenez donc garde ! Ne refusez pas d’écouter celui qui vous parle. Ceux qui ont refusé d’écouter celui qui les avertissait sur la terret, n’ont pas échappé au châtiment. A bien plus forte raison, nous ne pourrons pas y échapper si nous nous détournons de celui qui nous parle du haut des cieux. 26 Autrefois, sa voix a ébranlé la terre ; mais maintenant il nous a fait cette promesse : « J’ébranlerai encore une fois non seulement la terre, mais aussi le cielt. »

27 Les mots « encore une fois » montrent que les choses créées seront ébranlées et disparaîtront, afin que seul demeure ce qui est inébranlable.
28 Soyons donc reconnaissants, puisque nous recevons un royaume inébranlable. Manifestons cette reconnaissance en servant Dieu d’une manière qui lui soit agréable, avec respect et crainte. 29 En effet, notre Dieu est un feu qui détruitt.

Hebrews 12

1 Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,2 looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.3 For consider him that hath endured such gainsaying of sinners against himself, that ye wax not weary, fainting in your souls.4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin:5 and ye have forgotten the exhortation which reasoneth with you as with sons, My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord, Nor faint when thou art reproved of him;

6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

7 It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father chasteneth not?8 But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.9 Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.11 All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, even the fruit of righteousness.12 Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the palsied knees;13 and make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame be not turned out of the way, but rather be healed.14 Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord:15 looking carefully lest there be any man that falleth short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby the many be defiled;16 lest there be any fornication, or profane person, as Esau, who for one mess of meat sold his own birthright.17 For ye know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place for a change of mind in his father, though he sought it diligently with tears.18 For ye are not come unto a mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,19 and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard entreated that no word more should be spoken unto them;20 for they could not endure that which was enjoined, If even a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned;21 and so fearful was the appearance, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:22 but ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable hosts of angels,23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,24 and to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better than that of Abel.25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not when they refused him that warned them on earth, much more shall not we escape who turn away from him that warneth from heaven:26 whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more will I make to tremble not the earth only, but also the heaven.27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.28 Wherefore, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us have grace, whereby we may offer service well-pleasing to God with reverence and awe:29 for our God is a consuming fire.
