Ebrei 12

1 Anche noi, dunque, davanti a questa grande folla di uomini di fede, dobbiamo sbarazzarci di tutto ciò che ci ostacola o ci trattiene, specialmente di quei peccati che ci imprigionano così facilmente; e dobbiamo correre con decisione la corsa che Dio ci ha proposto.2 Teniamo lo sguardo fisso su Gesù, nostra guida ed esempio perfetto di fede. Su Gesù che, in vista della gioia che avrebbe avuto, sopportò una morte vergognosa sulla croce, ed ora si è seduto al posto d’onore alla destra del trono di Dio.3 Se volete evitare di perdervi d’animo e di stancarvi, pensate a Gesù che sopportò tanti attacchi da parte dei peccatori.4 Dopo tutto, non avete ancora lottato contro il peccato e la tentazione fino alla morte.

A che servono le punizioni di Dio?

5 Avete forse dimenticato le parole incoraggianti che Dio vi ha detto come a dei figli? « Figlio mio, non dare poca importanza alla punizione del Signore. Non scoraggiarti, quando Dio ti dimostra dove hai sbagliato,6 perché il Signore corregge quelli che ama e usa il bastone con tutti quelli che riconosce come suoi figli ».7 Lasciatevi dunque correggere dal Signore! Così facendo, egli vi tratta come figli. E quale è quel figlio che non viene mai corretto dal padre?8 Se Dio non vi punisce quando ne avete bisogno, come fa con tutti gli altri, allora significa che siete bastardi e non veri figli di Dio, insomma non fate parte della sua famiglia.9 E poi, se abbiamo rispettato i nostri padri carnali, che ci correggevano, a maggior ragione dobbiamo sottometterci a Dio per avere la vita!10 Infatti, i nostri padri terreni ci educavano solo per pochi anni, e secondo il loro criterio; Dio invece ci corregge per il nostro bene, per farci essere santi come è santo lui.11 È vero che essere puniti, lì sul momento, non piace a nessuno, anzi, fa male! In seguito, però, quelli che sono passati per questa scuola ne godono i frutti: una vita di pace e di giustizia.12 Perciò, risollevate le braccia stanche e restate saldi sulle ginocchia indebolite!13 Muovete i vostri passi sulla strada giusta, affinché chi vi segue, anche se debole e zoppo, non vada fuori strada, ma piuttosto guarisca!14 Fate ogni sforzo per vivere in pace con tutti ed essere santi, perché senza la santità nessuno vedrà il Signore.15 Badate che nessuno resti privo della grazia di Dio, e fate attenzione che non spuntino germogli velenosi a darvi fastidio e a contaminare la vita spirituale di molti di voi.16 Attenti che tra voi non ci siano persone immorali o che disprezzano il Signore, come fece Esaù, che barattò i suoi diritti di primogenito per un piatto di minestra.17 Sapete bene che in seguito, quando rivolle indietro quei diritti, era troppo tardi e, nonostante invocasse la benedizione di suo padre con le lacrime agli occhi, non trovò modo di riparare al suo errore. Ricordate e state attenti!

La maestà di Dio.

18 Voi non dovete avvicinarvi a una montagna di questo mondo, come fecero gli Israeliti che si avvicinarono al Monte Sinai, quando Dio diede loro le sue leggi.
Là c’erano le fiamme, la caligine, le tenebre e la tempesta.19 Voi non dovete udire squilli di tromba spaventosi, e neppure una voce tanto terribile, che quelli che la udirono pregarono Dio di non parlare più.20 Infatti gli Israeliti non potevano sopportare il divieto di Dio: « Se anche una bestia tocca il monte sia lapidata ».21 Mosè stesso rimase talmente spaventato davanti a quello spettacolo terribile che disse: « Ho paura e tremo ».22 Voi, invece, vi siete avvicinati al Monte Sion, alla città del Dio Vivente, la Gerusalemme del cielo. Vi siete accostati ad una miriade di angeli gioiosi, tutti riuniti in assemblea,23 composta dai primogeniti di Dio che hanno il proprio nome scritto nel cielo. Vi siete avvicinati a Dio che è giudice di tutti, agli spiriti degli uomini giusti finalmente portati alla perfezione.24 Vi siete avvicinati a Gesù stesso, che ci ha portato il suo nuovo patto meraviglioso; al suo sangue sparso che porta il perdono, anziché gridare vendetta come quello di Abele.25 Perciò fate bene attenzione! Non rifiutate di ascoltare colui che vi parla. Perché, se non scamparono gli Israeliti, quando si rifiutarono di ascoltare il Signore, tramite Mosè qui in terra, tanto meno scamperemo noi, se voltiamo le spalle a Dio che ci parla dal cielo!26 Quand’egli parlò dal Monte Sinai, la sua voce fece tremare la terra, ma: « La prossima volta », ha promesso il Signore, « non scuoterò soltanto la terra, ma anche il cielo ».27 Con queste parole Dio intende che, delle cose create, eliminerà tutte quelle che non hanno solide fondamenta, perché rimangano soltanto quelle incrollabili.28 Siccome abbiamo un regno che non può essere distrutto, cerchiamo dunque di piacere a Dio, servendolo con cuore riconoscente, con timore e rispetto.29 Perché, come dicono le Scritture, il nostro Dio è anche « un fuoco che consuma ».

Hebrews 12

1 Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,2 looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.3 For consider him that hath endured such gainsaying of sinners against himself, that ye wax not weary, fainting in your souls.4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin:5 and ye have forgotten the exhortation which reasoneth with you as with sons, My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord, Nor faint when thou art reproved of him;

6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

7 It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father chasteneth not?8 But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.9 Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.11 All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, even the fruit of righteousness.12 Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the palsied knees;13 and make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame be not turned out of the way, but rather be healed.14 Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord:15 looking carefully lest there be any man that falleth short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby the many be defiled;16 lest there be any fornication, or profane person, as Esau, who for one mess of meat sold his own birthright.17 For ye know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place for a change of mind in his father, though he sought it diligently with tears.18 For ye are not come unto a mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,19 and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard entreated that no word more should be spoken unto them;20 for they could not endure that which was enjoined, If even a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned;21 and so fearful was the appearance, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:22 but ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable hosts of angels,23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,24 and to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better than that of Abel.25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not when they refused him that warned them on earth, much more shall not we escape who turn away from him that warneth from heaven:26 whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more will I make to tremble not the earth only, but also the heaven.27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.28 Wherefore, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us have grace, whereby we may offer service well-pleasing to God with reverence and awe:29 for our God is a consuming fire.
