Les yeux fixés sur Jésus
1 tNous donc aussi, puisque nous sommes entourés d’une si grande nuée de témoins, rejetons tout fardeau et le péché qui nous enlace si facilement, et courons avec persévérance l’épreuve qui nous est proposée,
2 tles yeux fixés sur Jésus, qui est le pionnier de la foi et qui la porte à son accomplissement. Au lieu de la joie qui lui était proposée, il a enduré la croix, méprisant la honte, et il s’est assis à la droite du trône de Dieu.
3 tConsidérez en effet celui qui a enduré une telle opposition de la part des pécheurs, pour que vous ne vous lassiez pas, par découragement.
4 tVous n’avez pas encore résisté jusqu’au sang dans votre combat contre le péché,
5 tet vous avez oublié l’encouragement qui vous est adressé comme à des fils :
Mon fils, ne prends pas à la légère la correction du Seigneur,
et ne te décourage pas lorsqu’il te reprend.
6 t Car le Seigneur corrige celui qu’il aime,
il donne des coups de fouet à tout fils qu’il agrée.
7 tC’est pour votre correction que vous endurez ; Dieu vous traite comme des fils. Quel est en effet le fils que le père ne corrige pas ? 8 tSi vous êtes exempts de la correction à laquelle tous ont part, c’est que vous n’êtes pas des fils, mais des bâtards. 9 tPuisque nous avons tous eu un père de notre chair qui nous corrigeait et que nous respections, ne devons-nous pas à plus forte raison nous soumettre au Père des esprits, pour que nous vivions ? 10 tCelui-là, en effet, nous corrigeait pour peu de temps, comme il lui semblait bon ; celui-ci nous corrige pour notre véritable intérêt, afin que nous ayons part à sa sainteté.
11 tToute correction, il est vrai, ne semble pas être au premier abord un sujet de joie, mais un sujet de tristesse ; plus tard, toutefois, elle procure à ceux qu’elle a formés un fruit de paix, la justice.
12 tRedressez donc les mains qui retombent et les genoux qui flageolent.
13 tPréparez pour vos pieds des pistes droites, afin que ce qui est boiteux ne se torde pas davantage, mais plutôt guérisse.Des premiers-nés inscrits dans les cieux
14 tPoursuivez la paix avec tous, ainsi que la consécration sans laquelle personne ne verra le Seigneur. 15 tVeillez à ce que personne ne se prive de la grâce de Dieu ;à ce qu’aucune racine d’amertume, en produisant des rejetons, ne cause des perturbations, et qu’une multitude n’en soit souillée. 16 tVeillez à ce que personne ne se livre à l’inconduite sexuelle ou n’agisse en profanateur, comme Esaü, qui pour un seul plat vendit son droit d’aînesse.
17 tVous savez que, plus tard, quand il voulut hériter la bénédiction, il fut rejeté ; en effet, il ne trouva aucune possibilité de changement, bien qu’il l’ait recherché dans les larmes.
18 tVous ne vous êtes pas approchés, en effet, de choses palpables : ni d’un feu ardent, ni d’une obscurité, ni de ténèbres, ni d’une tempête, 19 tni d’un son de trompette, ni d’une clameur de paroles telle que ceux qui l’entendirent demandèrent qu’on ne leur adresse pas un mot de plus. 20 tCar ils ne supportaient pas cette injonction : « Qui touche la montagne – même une bête – sera lapidé. » 21 tLe spectacle était si terrifiant que Moïse dit : «Je suis épouvanté et tout tremblant. » 22 tMais vous vous êtes approchés de la montagne de Sion et de la cité du Dieu vivant, la Jérusalem céleste ; de dizaines de milliers d’anges ; de la réunion 23 tet de l’assemblée des premiers-nés inscrits dans les cieux ; de Dieu, juge de tous ; des esprits des justes portés à leur accomplissement ;
24 tde Jésus, le médiateur d’une alliance neuve ; et du sang de l’aspersion qui parle mieux que celui d’Abel.
25 tPrenez garde de ne pas repousser celui qui parle. En effet, si ceux-là n’ont pas échappé qui ont repoussé celui qui les avertissait sur la terre, à bien plus forte raison n’échapperons-nous pas si nous nous détournons de celui qui nous avertit depuis les cieux.
26 tSa voix ébranla alors la terre, et maintenant il a fait cette promesse :
Une fois encore, je ferai moi-même trembler non seulementla terre, mais aussile ciel.
27 tCe «une fois encore » montre bien que doit être mis à l’écart ce qui, ayant été fait, peut être ébranlé, pour que demeure ce qui ne peut être ébranlé. 28 tAussi, puisque nous recevons un royaume inébranlable, montrons notre gratitude en rendant à Dieu un culte qui soit agréé de lui, avec piété et avec crainte. 29 tCar notreDieu est aussiun feu dévorant.
Hebrews 12
1 Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,2 looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.3 For consider him that hath endured such gainsaying of sinners against himself, that ye wax not weary, fainting in your souls.4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin:5 and ye have forgotten the exhortation which reasoneth with you as with sons, My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord, Nor faint when thou art reproved of him;
6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
7 It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father chasteneth not?8 But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.9 Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.11 All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, even the fruit of righteousness.12 Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the palsied knees;13 and make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame be not turned out of the way, but rather be healed.14 Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord:15 looking carefully lest there be any man that falleth short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby the many be defiled;16 lest there be any fornication, or profane person, as Esau, who for one mess of meat sold his own birthright.17 For ye know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place for a change of mind in his father, though he sought it diligently with tears.18 For ye are not come unto a mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,19 and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard entreated that no word more should be spoken unto them;20 for they could not endure that which was enjoined, If even a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned;21 and so fearful was the appearance, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:22 but ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable hosts of angels,23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,24 and to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better than that of Abel.25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not when they refused him that warned them on earth, much more shall not we escape who turn away from him that warneth from heaven:26 whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more will I make to tremble not the earth only, but also the heaven.27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.28 Wherefore, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us have grace, whereby we may offer service well-pleasing to God with reverence and awe:29 for our God is a consuming fire.
