Hebrews 12

Persévérer dans la vie chrétienne

1 Nous donc aussi, puisque nous sommes entourés d'une si grande nuée de témoins, rejetons tout fardeau et le péché qui nous enveloppe si facilement, et courons avec persévérance l'épreuve qui nous est proposée.2 Faisons-le en gardant les regards sur Jésus, qui fait naître la foi et la mène à la perfection. En échange de la joie qui lui était réservée, il a souffert la croix en méprisant la honte qui s'y attachait et il s'est assis à la droite du trône de Dieu.

3 Pensez en effet à celui qui a supporté une telle opposition contre lui de la part des pécheurs, afin de ne pas vous laisser abattre par le découragement.
4 Vous n'avez pas encore résisté jusqu'au sang dans votre combat contre le péché5 et vous avez oublié l'encouragement qui vous est adressé comme à des fils: Mon fils, ne méprise pas la correction du Seigneur et ne perds pas courage lorsqu'il te reprend.

6 En effet, le Seigneur corrige celui qu'il aime et il punit tous ceux qu'il reconnaît comme ses fils.t
7 Supportez la correction: c'est comme des fils que Dieu vous traite. Quel est le fils qu'un père ne corrige pas?8 Mais si vous êtes dispensés de la correction à laquelle tous ont part, c'est donc que vous êtes des enfants illégitimes et non des fils.9 D'ailleurs, puisque nos pères terrestres nous ont corrigés et que nous les avons respectés, ne devons-nous pas d'autant plus nous soumettre à notre Père céleste pour avoir la vie?10 Nos pères nous corrigeaient pour un peu de temps, comme ils le trouvaient bon, tandis que Dieu le fait pour notre bien, afin que nous participions à sa sainteté.

11 Certes, au premier abord, toute correction semble un sujet de tristesse, et non de joie, mais elle produit plus tard chez ceux qu'elle a ainsi exercés un fruit porteur de paix: la justice.
12 Fortifiez donc vos mains défaillantes et vos genoux flageolantst13 et faites des voies droites pour vos piedst, afin que ce qui est boiteux ne se démette pas mais plutôt soit guéri.14 Recherchez la paix avec tous et la progression dans la sainteté: sans elle, personne ne verra le Seigneur.15 Veillez à ce que personne ne se prive de la grâce de Dieu, à ce qu'aucune racine d'amertume, produisant des rejetons, ne cause du trouble et que beaucoup n'en soient infectés.16 Veillez à ce qu'aucun de vous ne fasse preuve d'immoralité sexuelle ou ne se montre profanateur comme Esaü, qui pour un seul repas a vendu son droit d'aînesset.

17 Vous savez que plus tard il a voulu obtenir la bénédiction mais a été rejeté; en effet, il n'a pas pu amener son père à changer d'attitude, bien qu'il l'ait cherché avec larmes.
18 Vous ne vous êtes pas approchés d'une montagne qu'on pouvait toucher et qui était embrasée par le feu, ni de l'obscurité, ni des ténèbres, ni de la tempête,19 ni du retentissement de la trompette, ni du bruit des paroles. Ce bruit était tel que ceux qui l'ont entendu ont refusé qu'il leur soit adressé un mot de plus.20 Ils ne supportaient pas, en effet, cette consigne: Si même une bête touche la montagne, elle sera lapidée.t

21 Le spectacle était si terrifiant que Moïse a dit: Je suis épouvanté et tremblant de peur!t
22 Au contraire, vous vous êtes approchés du mont Sion, de la cité du Dieu vivant, la Jérusalem céleste, et ses dizaines de milliers d'anges23 en fête, de l'assemblée des premiers-nés inscrits dans le ciel. Vous vous êtes approchés de Dieu qui est le juge de tous, des esprits des justes parvenus à la perfection,

24 de Jésus, qui est le médiateur d'une alliance nouvelle, et du sang purificateur porteur d'un meilleur message que celui d'Abel.
25 Faites attention! Ne refusez pas d'écouter celui qui parle. En effet, les hommes qui ont rejeté celui qui les avertissait sur la terre n'en ont pas réchappé. Combien moins échapperons-nous si nous nous détournons de celui qui parle du haut du ciel!26 Lui dont la voix avait alors ébranlé la terre, il a maintenant fait cette promesse: Une fois encore je fais trembler non seulement la terre, mais aussi le ciel.t27 Les mots une fois encore indiquent bien que les choses qui, appartenant au monde créé, peuvent être ébranlées disparaîtront, afin que celles qui sont inébranlables subsistent.28 C'est pourquoi, puisque nous recevons un royaume inébranlable, attachons-nous à la grâce qui nous permet de rendre à Dieu un culte qui lui soit agréable, avec respect et avec piété.

29 Notre Dieu est en effet un feu dévorantt.

Hebrews 12

1 Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,2 looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.3 For consider him that hath endured such gainsaying of sinners against himself, that ye wax not weary, fainting in your souls.4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin:5 and ye have forgotten the exhortation which reasoneth with you as with sons, My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord, Nor faint when thou art reproved of him;

6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

7 It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father chasteneth not?8 But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.9 Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.11 All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, even the fruit of righteousness.12 Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the palsied knees;13 and make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame be not turned out of the way, but rather be healed.14 Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord:15 looking carefully lest there be any man that falleth short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby the many be defiled;16 lest there be any fornication, or profane person, as Esau, who for one mess of meat sold his own birthright.17 For ye know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place for a change of mind in his father, though he sought it diligently with tears.18 For ye are not come unto a mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,19 and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard entreated that no word more should be spoken unto them;20 for they could not endure that which was enjoined, If even a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned;21 and so fearful was the appearance, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:22 but ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable hosts of angels,23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,24 and to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better than that of Abel.25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not when they refused him that warned them on earth, much more shall not we escape who turn away from him that warneth from heaven:26 whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more will I make to tremble not the earth only, but also the heaven.27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.28 Wherefore, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us have grace, whereby we may offer service well-pleasing to God with reverence and awe:29 for our God is a consuming fire.
